  • Council chief inspects Third Mainland Bridge link road

Bariga Local Council Development Area Chairman, Mr Kolade Alabi has inspected ongoing roads construction linking Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

Alabi, who spoke with The Nation at the weekend, expressed satisfaction with the state of the work on Emmanuel, Adetoke and Ewe Nla roads.

The road after completion, he said, would link  the council to Third Mainland Bridge.

“I just left those two roads now after inspection. We are trying to open up the roads in our council to other major roads in the state. When completed, motorists can go from Adetoke to Ewe Nla to link Third Mainland Bridge. This will reduce man hours spent to connect the iconic bridge through other roads,” he said.

He said the council had completed the construction of Akanbi road, making it four roads.

Alabi said the road alongside others will improve economic activities of the communities.

According to him, Thomas drive and Alfa Sanni are some of the roads that will feel the presence of his administration.

The council chief said plans were at advanced stage to award the contracts for the construction of more six roads besides the ongoing construction at Jolaosho, Adeyinka Oshijo and Thomas Drive.

He promised to construct 26 culverts to complement the 16 that had been inaugurated.

He called on the contractors to re-double their efforts to ensure timely completion of the roads.

He praised the contractor that handled Akanbi Street for completing it before the deadline.

“The construction of the road was scheduled to last  eight weeks, but it was completed before the time. Other contractors should emulate this kind of attitude to work. We want to do a lot in the area of road construction. The earlier we finish those contracted out, the better for us to start with another set of roads,” he said.

He appealed to residents of the council, especially those areas that have not been reached by the LCDA to be patient, promising that all wards would benefited from the road construction.

“During my campaigns, I promised to serve the people of Bariga diligently and also with the fear of God, today I’m standing in front of you again to give you the assurance that I will honour this agreement and the pact I signed with you for four years,” Alabi said.

  • Council chief goes after illegal revenue collectors

Chairman of Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Hon Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi has warned unauthorised persons to desist from collecting revenue from residents and traders in the council area.

He warned that anyone caught in this act would be prosecuted.

Egunjobi issued the warning during an interactive session with traders and residents of Aluminium village, Dopemu, and its environs.

He condemned the habit by the leaders of some trade associations of non-remittance of revenue unlawfully collected from their members over the years.

He said: “The interaction enables me to address issues bordering on security, sanitation and internally generated revenue. And from what I have gathered from traders, they have been paying revenue due to the Agege local government area to their trade associations. Unfortunately, the leadership of the associations have not remitted such money to the coffers of the council area.

“Millions of naira had been paid by shop owners to their associations, but we are not seeing any money being paid to our council area, so where has the money gone to? So there is unlawful collection of our revenue by people not appointed to carry out such duty and we are certainly not going to take that anymore.

“We have engaged the leadership of the affected associations with a view to making them see reason why they should remit the money collected as local government revenue from their members to our council’s purse. We are inviting the associations to a meeting following which we shall take punitive actions errant ones among them.

He added that his administration would ensure safety of lives and property.

“We have been holding regular security meetings with all law enforcement agencies and community leaders within the council area and there has been relative peace. We have also been engaging vulnerable youths in order to discourage them from indulging in criminal activities as well as empowering them with vocational skills for economic self-reliance that would discourage them from criminal activities.”

  • Council chief seeks corporate organisations’ help

Council chief seeks corporate organisations’ help

The Executive Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Kayode Adejare Omiyale, has urged corporate organisations to partner the council to empower the residents.

The council chief spoke at the distribution of 183 free eye glasses to pupils of public primary schools in the LCDA.

He said: “When the idea to screen children for eye defects was brought before me, I hesitated a little bit before I embraced it. In my own personal opinion, I reasoned that pupils in primary schools had nothing to do with eye defects, because they were young and tender! To my amazement, out of about 1,000 pupils who went through the eye screening last year, 183 of them needed eyes glasses urgently to correct their eye defects.

“This gathering today would not have been possible but for the tremendous supports we received from our partners, such as Catholic Optical, Visionspring, USAAID and Zenith Bank Plc. This is a clear indication that government alone cannot provide the needs of the populace.

“I want to sincerely express our appreciation to the primary school authority, which graciously allowed us access to the pupils in their various schools.

“I wish to call on our partners to extend this largesse to the public, especially those in dire need of corrective glasses but do not have the financial capability to purchase a pair; same for our workers in Yaba LCDA.

“It is apparent that a child with eye defect will not be able to read or write. This is, in fact, the beginning of failure to most pupils.”

A statement by the council’s Director of Public Affairs, Olusegun Akinyemi, quoted the Executive Director of Catholic Optical Outreach, Rev Father Christopher Ogunnupebi, as saying the gesture was a way of reaching the less privileged in the society.

The financier said the new road will ease transportation and movement of goods and persons in the area.

Buraimoh thanked Nted for his gesture, saying other wealthy individuals and corporate bodies should emulate him for further development of the area.

The council chief urged others to assist the government in health, education, youths and sports development.

The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Kayode Adejare Omiyale, has hailed Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for constructing Tokunbo/Ishola streets in the LCDA.

The chairman said it is an historic partnership between the state government and the LCDA to bring succour to the residents.

Tokunbo/Ishola streets are the best options to escape the huge traffic on the popular Herbert Macaulay road.

It is a strategic way to link the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and other important places to safe travelling time on the mainland.

Omiyale urged the Community Development Associations (CDAs) on Tokunbo/Ishola streets to monitor the contractor in order to achieve the best results.

The LCDA chief said it had become the responsibilities of the CDAs and the landlord associations to speak with mechanics on the road.

He said mechanics are not supposed to turn the roads into their workshops.

Omiyale said: “We, the residents, will need to decide consciously whether to have a good road or a bad road.

“If we are determined to have good roads, we need to apply necessary sanctions on those who deface the roads.”

The council chairman said beneficiaries of the Lontor package would also benefit from the company’s investment plan on the completion of the sales of its product given to them.

The Chief Executive Officer of Lontor at Ajegunle Mr. Jubril Arogundade said unavailability of constant power supply at Ajegunle had made the prospect of businesses in the area difficult.

He said the beneficiaries needed to understand that the local government chairman wanted the residents to benefit from the scheme.

“The council chairman has paid for 50 of you. We’ll appreciate it if you put in your best and explore the profit side of this business,” Arogundade said.
