FIFA Best Player award: Ronaldo, Messi lead 23-man shortlist

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi lead the contenders on the 23-man shortlist for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2016 award, with three members of Leicester City’s title-winning squad also in contention.

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, who has since joined Chelsea, have been named on the shortlist in recognition of their roles in Leicester’s shock Premier League title success last season. Claudio Ranieri is also a leading contender for the top coach award.

Top names on the list include Portugal captain Ronaldo — who enjoyed success in the Champions League and Euro 2016 this year — and Real Madrid teammates Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric, plus Barcelona’s Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann, a finalist in the Champions League and European Championship, is another contender, along with international teammate Dimitri Payet.

FIFA announced this week that its rebranded “The Best” awards will be decided by a combination of votes from national coaches and captains, journalists and fans. Voting for the player and coach awards, in both men’s and women’s football, closes on Nov. 22.

The 23-man list is due to be reduced to three candidates on Dec. 2 ahead of the Jan. 9 ceremony.

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated FIFA’s annual award, formerly known as the Ballon d’Or and World Player of the Year, since 2008. Messi has won five times and Ronaldo three.

Ronaldo was seen as favourite under the old voting rules to win for 2016 because Portugal won the European Championship and Real Madrid won the Champions League. Messi and Argentina lost to Chile in the Copa America final.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo supports GEJ?

    Cristiano Ronaldo supports GEJ?

On the official facebook page of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Front (NDPSF), a photo of World footballer of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo surfaced on monday. The photo featured the footballer holding a placard with ‘vote GEJ for 2015” inscription.

Many are still speculating it is photo shopped due to the fact that the Portuguese star has never played against Nigeria, visited the West African nation nor met the incumbent president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in person.

The photo is however gaining momentum and its authenticity still under investigation.

  • Messi is world’s most expensive footballer

Messi is world’s most expensive footballer

The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) has published the 120 most expensive footballers in the world based on their current market values.

In order to qualify to make the list, the footballer must be plying his trade in one of the top five leagues in Europe – Spain, England, France, Germany and Italy, sl10.ng reports.

Regrettably, no Nigerian player was mentioned by the Switzerland – based organization, though the likes of Mikel, Onazi, Ujah, Enyeama and Ikechukwu Uche ply their trade in the prestigious championships.

The only consolation is that Bayern Munich’s Austria international, David Alaba, who has Nigerian blood flowing in his veins, is ranked in the 56th position while England midfielder Ross Barkley is among the players in the top 40.

Five of Mikel’s teammates at Chelsea – Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Francesc Fàbregas, Oscar and Thibaut Courtois – were named in the top 20.

As expected Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi, is the most valuable player in the world followed by Real Madrid poster boy, Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • Ronaldo helped Di Maria make United decision

Ronaldo helped Di Maria make United decision

Angel di Maria has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo helped convince him a move to Manchester United was the right one.

Di Maria moved from Real Madrid to Old Trafford in August in a £59.7million deal that smashed the British transfer record, but he sought the advice of the former United attacker before any switch was confirmed.

The pair played together for five seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga and two Copa del Rey titles.

So, when news of a potential move to the Premier League surfaced, the Argentina international was quick to get the thoughts of the Ballon d’Or holder.

“He told me it was a massive club and that I would be very happy here and it would be good for me,” he told Inside United, the club’s official magazine

“At that time, we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not, so we didn’t go into great detail, but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision.

“It was a very big moment in my career.

“Leaving a club like Real and coming to as big a club as Manchester United makes you grow as a player and helps you progress in your career.

“It was a very important moment and I’m really happy here. Let’s hope things go well for me so I can be here for many years.”

Di Maria made a stunning start to his United career with three goals in six games, but he has failed to maintain that form, failing to score in the last four league matches.
