  • Isco leaves hospital after appendicitis surgery

    Real Madrid playmaker Isco has left hospital after successfully undergoing an operation to treat appendicitis, the European champions said on Wednesday.

    “Our player Isco has been discharged from hospital.

    “He will start his recovery process now under the supervision of the Real Madrid medical services,” said a statement from the club which did not state how long Isco was expected to be out for.

    Reports in the Spanish media, however, said the Spain international would be unable to play for around a month and was targeting a return in time for Real’s crunch match away to arch-rivals Barcelona on Oct. 28 in La Liga.

    Isco was taken to hospital on Tuesday after arriving at training complaining of stomach pains.

    He is set to miss a total of six games for Real, including Wednesday’s testing league trip to Sevilla and Saturday’s city derby against Atletico Madrid.

    He will also have to sit out Champions League games against CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen, as well as Spain’s friendly against Wales and their UEFA Nations League game with England.

    Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa, who put a good show in CSKA Moscow’s Europa tie against Crvena Zvezda on Wednesday, will be hoping to continue his impressive run in the next stage of the championship following the draw released on Friday.

    The last 16 draw dished out on Friday pitched the Russian side against French side Lyon. The two legged encounter begins with CSKA hosting Lyon on March 8 with the return leg billed for March 15.

    Arsenal will face AC Milan in the standout clash, with Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund avoiding  heavyweight meetings.

    Arsene Wenger’s side scraped past Ostersunds 4-2 on aggregate, but their reward is a tough test against in-form Milan, who saw off Ludogorets in the round of 32.

    The two sides last met at this stage of the 2011-12 Champions League, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired a 4-3 aggregate triumph for the Serie A outfit, with Arsenal unable to come back from a first-leg humbling at San Siro.

    Milan will again play at home first, on March 8, with the return fixture at Emirates Stadium scheduled for March 15.

    Atletico were handed a seemingly more straightforward draw against Lokomotiv Moscow, while German giants Dortmund will take on Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg.

    Elsewhere, RB Leipzig and Zenit, who knocked out Napoli and Celtic respectively, face one another, with the first leg to be played in Germany.

    Lazio were drawn against Dynamo Kiev, with Marseille to take on Athletic Bilbao, and Sporting CP facing Viktoria Plzen.

    Lyon will have to get past CSKA Moscow if they are to reach the final at their home stadium in May.

    Musa savors 90 minutes action in CSKA victory

     

    Super Eagles and CSkA of Moscow returnee Ahmed Musa enjoyed full 90 minutes play Wednesday, as the Russian side earned a lone goal victory over visiting Crvena Zvezda in a UEFA Europa league tie.

    Although the Nigerian international whose return to his former club has been hailed by many did not score in Wednesday encounter he nonetheless posted an impressive run to the delight of Viktor Goncharenko led coaching crew.

    CSKA dominated proceedings maintaining a 55% t0 45% possession ration all through the match.

    The centre referee however had his hands full during the encounter as no fewer than five players were shown the yellow card.

    Musa who returned to Moscow on 30 January 2018, on loan for the remainder of the 2017–18 season scored two goals in friendly matches prior to Wednesday’s Europa clash.

    There are strong indications that the club may seek a permanent return for Musa who they have described as ‘one of their own’ at the expiration of the loan deal.

    Some who are tickled by Musa’s return to the Russian club say it will provide a better platform for him to be considered for the World Cup in Russia as he is likely to earn better playing time compared to the era of bench warming exercise at Leicester City.

    Super Eagles ace Ahmed Musa says CSKA Moscow is a club with unique fighting spirit, describing the VEB Arena as a home.

    Musa who has been handed No. 7 jersey was warmly welcomed by club management who wished him fruitful return.

    The pacy forward who transferred to English premiership side Leicester in August 2016 for £16million, further said he is happy to be back to the Red and Blue Family.

    “I am happy and proud to be back.  This is truly my home, Champion team that fights for top awards and occupy highest places.  I am back to the Red and Blue Family,” he enthused

    Musa has only mustered one Leicester appearance this term however, when he found the net in a Carabao Cup clash at Sheffield United

    Prior to his transfer to Leicester City, Musa spent five seasons with the Russian side scoring 50 goals in all competitions

    CSKA are fifth in the Russian Premier League, with the division currently on a winter break until March.

    Musa will be eligible to feature in next month’s Europa League round of 32 tie with Red Star Belgrade.

    It will be recalled that the former Kano Pillars forward wore No. 18 jersey during his first stay with CSKA Moscow.

    His return to the club has been hailed in some quarters coming at a time when Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is expecting Nigerian players to be at their peak and play regularly ahead of the World Cup.

    The German tactician only recently advised Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho to seek new clubs where they can play regularly after playing time turned into gold at the King Power Stadium.

    Iheanacho only few days back scored a brace in Leicester City’s 5-1 defeat of Peterborough in the FA cup clash bring his FA cup goals to nine in nine matches, prompting some analysts to suggest that there could be a turn of fortune for him at the King Power Stadium

    CSKA Moscow earn first home win, end Benfica’s hope

    CSKA Moscow earned their first home win of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign with a 2-0 victory over Benfica of Portugal on Wednesday.

    The victory strengthened their push to reach the knockout stages while shattering the Portuguese side’s chances.

    Georgi Schennikov put CSKA ahead after 13 minutes with a left-footed finish, having been assisted by Bibras Natcho’s short through ball that shredded Benfica’s backline.

    The visitors’ troubles worsened after the interval as defender Jardel then clumsily deflected a cross by CSKA’s Vitinho into the back of his own net after 56 minutes.

    CSKA’s win puts them into second place in Group A on nine points behind leaders Manchester United, who take on Basel later on Wednesday.

    Yet, the result ensured that former European champions Benfica, still without a point, are now certain to finish last.

    Eremenko doping ban upheld by CAS

    CSKA Moscow’s Roman Eremenko’s two-year doping ban has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

    Finland international Eremenko was banned last November after he tested positive for cocaine and its metabolites following a 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayer Leverkusen on September 14, in which he scored the equaliser.

    And his appeal was rejected by CAS on Friday, meaning Eremenko will remain suspended until October 5 2018. He will be 31 when his ban expires.

    A CAS statement read: “The CAS Panel found that a two-year period of ineligibility was the appropriate sanction and since the UEFA AB decision did not specify the date of commencement of the suspension, found it proper to clarify the point and modify the UEFA AB decision accordingly, in order to confirm that the Player is suspended for a period of 2 years from 6 October 2016.”

    Capped 73 times by Finland, Eremenko joined CSKA from Rubin Kazan in 2014 and helped them to the Russian Premier League title in 2016.

    The management of Wikki Tourists of Bauchi has received offers from Russian Premier League giants, CSKA Moscow and FC Spartak Moscow for Godwin Obaje, SportingLife can exclusively report.

    Obaje emerged the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) top scorer after netting 18 goals for the Bauchi-based outfit in the just concluded season.

    A top club official revealed to SportingLife that Obaje will be on his way to Moscow as soon as he secures a Russian Visa.

    “We have received two offers from Russian league clubs CSKA Moscow and FC Spartak Moscow for Obaje and he will be traveling for trials very soon. He will start processing his visa. So when he is granted visa he will travel. Our hope and prayer is for him to excel in his career.     Musa gets CSKA Moscow, NFF’s birthday wishes

    The Nigeria Football Federation and CSKA Moscow have sent birthday wishes to Super Eagles striker Ahmed Musa, who turned 24 on Friday, October 14.

    But the present club of the former Kano Pillars star, Leicester City, forgot to wish him happy birthday through their social media channels and official website.

    The Nigerian Federation stated via Twitter : “Happy Birthday @NGSuperEagles forward Ahmed Musa @7Myca . We celebrate you today. #HappyBirthdayAhmed.”

    CSKA Moscow tweeted : “#CSKA wishes a very happy birthday to the one and only Ahmed Musa! .”

    Musa made his debut for the senior national team in 2010 and has played for the U-20 and U-23 squads, he spent four and a half years with CSKA Moscow before transferring to the Foxes this summer.

    Nigeria international Ahmed Musa is expected to join up with the rest of the Leicester squad at the team training camp in Austria next week after completing his transfer from CSKA Moscow.

    CSKA Moscow has moved quickly to replace Musa after agreeing a loan move for Ivorian giant striker, Lacina Traore.

    Another Nigerian striker, Aaron Samuel, could have been the ex- Kano Pillars winger’s replacement at the army club, but he suffered a long-term knee injury and will be out for close to a year, africanFootball.com reports.

    Traore has featured for Premier League side Everton and Monaco in France.

    Musa’s transfer to Leicester will be announced at the weekend.

    Ahmed Musa joins Leicester City

    Premier League champions Leicester City have agreed a deal with CSKA Moscow to sign Nigeria forward Ahmed Musa, the player’s agent disclosed on Monday.

    The 23-year-old, who joined CSKA in 2012 and scored 54 goals in 168 games, is set to sign for a club record fee at the Foxes.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Leicester City stunned all last season on their way to the English title.

    “Everything has been finalised and Musa will be in England for his medical on Wednesday,’’ his agent, Tony Harris, said.

    It was learnt that Musa had earlier turned down offers from Southampton, Everton and West Ham.

    CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky admitted the Nigerian, who can play as winger or striker, is on his way out of the club.

    “He’ll be leaving on Tuesday,’’ Slutsky told the Russian media.

    “If you look at the way things are done over there, you’ll see he is a player just made for English football.’’

    Musa made his international debut against Madagascar in September 2010 and has scored 11 times in 58 appearances for the Super Eagles.

    He scored twice in Nigeria’s 3-2 loss to Argentina at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, becoming the first Nigerian to score twice in a World Cup finals match.

    His first goal in that Group F game was his country’s fastest at the tournament, coming after just four minutes.
