After blowbacks, Asake, dad mend fences

In just three days, a public family dispute involving Afrobeats star Asake and his father, Fatai Odunsi, captured widespread attention. From claims of abandonment to emotional reconciliations, the saga unfolded on social media, revealing a complex father-son relationship, finally culminating in a heartfelt resolution and a promise of support, reports ASSISTANT ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR GBENGA BADA.

    • Singer to buy new house, settle father’s hospital bill

In three days, the seeming dirty linen in the private life of Afrobeats singer, Ahmed Ololade Odunsi (aka Asake), rented the air and created a buzz on social media. On Friday, March 14, a video of Fatai Odunsi, who is Asake’s father, appealing to the public for financial assistance, citing severe health challenges, surfaced online. In the now-viral video, the elderly Odunsi revealed that he has been battling stroke since 2022 and has been abandoned by his celebrity son for reasons unknown.

The elderly Odunsi claimed he was a responsible father, who was present in the life of his son as he was the only product of the short-lived union between himself and Asake’s mum, whose name was simply given as Falilat. He also noted that the last time he spoke or chatted with Asake was in 2022 and he has neither picked his calls or supported him financially as a child should do to his parents. The video elicited reactions from several quarters – with most coming from social media. While reactions were flying about, some blamed Asake’s mother for inciting the singer against his father. Others insisted the senior Odunsi was a deadbeat father, who wanted to reap from where he did not sow.

Investigations by The Nation revealed that Asake has a chummy relationship with his mother, whom he says he adores. On March 5, 2025, Asake took to his X account to celebrate his mother. He wrote, “Happy birthday to the most amazing mom. Your love and support mean the world to me. I’m so grateful for you every day. Love you more than anything.”

In what seemed to be a direct response to his father’s claim, the Grammy nominee and former YBNL signee, claimed he did his best to take care of his father but his father wants to cajole him. In the musical response released on his official Instagram pages, Asake claimed it’s hard to satisfy everyone but he will keep doing his best till he passes on. In his words, “You can’t please everyone, you can’t please the world. But anything you are doing, just do it for God. My own father wants to cajole me, and I have sent so much money to him. I have struggled for so many years, but they want to make life tire me.”

Asake’s cryptic response on social media further elicited claims from supporters of his father, who claimed his father was very present in his life. The supporters insisted that Odunsi was responsible for taking care of Asake when he parted ways with his mum in 1998 and the star singer was just three years old. The supporters went further to blame Asake’s mother for masterminding his decision to stay away and abandon his father. The supporters claimed she did this to get back at Odunsi after parting ways with him over 27 years ago. It was during the back and forth that the existence of an 11-year-old girl, said to be Asake’s first daughter, was brought to the fore. Odunsi’s supporters had backed up their claims of Asake’s abandonment of his father with the claims that he also abandoned his own child.

After much accusations and counter accusations, the music sensation reached out to his father and made amends with him following the public fallout. On Sunday, March 16, in a short video, Odunsi revealed that Asake had reached out and promised to support him. He went further to say the singer has committed to purchasing a new house for him as he’s currently shopping for a house for him and promises to cover his medical expenses by booking a doctor’s appointment in the highbrow Lekki area for him. He said he’s happy with his son and prayed endlessly for his success at all times.

“His mother ought to ask him when he last saw me. That was what got me angry, but we have sorted out all the problems. We are no longer fighting. Asake said he will do everything that I want. We have settled, no more problems. They are now looking for a new house that he will buy for me. He has settled everything,” he said in the video.

On taking responsibilities of his daughter, Odunsi said Asake has also agreed to take full responsibility for his 11-year-old daughter, Zeenat. “He has never denied his child, but he has now promised to take full responsibility for the child,” Odunsi said in the video.

    Reactions from different quarters

Sesan Adeniji reacted to the first video from Odunsi saying, “To imagine Asake’s alleged father fails to use his first public appearance to reconnect by saying “Son, I still love. Forgive me if I have wronged you.” But instead he used his name to beg and also dent his image by saying “he has not picked my call” is bonkers entitlement. Any father that publicly chastises his son indirectly for allegedly not helping financially (no matter the circumstances. I know we sometimes need help), may win the battle of public opinion but arguably have failed to act as a father. Use love to connect and not pressure.”

Adeniji responded again after Asake and his father settled their rift saying, “Asake has done the transaction. His father said “We have spoken. He’s about to buy me a house. Fight is over…(paraphrasing).” Arguably, sometimes, the level of love you get from some of your family members is transactional. Get money and God’s grace.”

Reacting to the public fallout, Sheriffdeen Ojon Olorunfemi said, “Egbon Malo (as Odunsi is widely referred to) and my uncle, Ambaliu Olorunfemi, worked together as Local Government Council traffic officials. He (Asake) inherited all the talents of his father, both in singing and drumming. During his struggles to succeed in life, Allah made me become involved in his life in one way or the other, through his mother, who informed me about his music career. Ahmed himself contacted me via WhatsApp after his mother shared my contact information with him. I recall praying for him for several days. As I always say, no prayer goes to waste.

“While I cannot definitively say whether my prayers were answered, I can see that all that I told his mother about Ahmed is manifesting in his life now. I thank God for his life, and I advise him not to neglect his father if he wishes to continue prospering in life. Thinking about his son neglecting him caused his stroke in 2022 and also delaying the healing on time. My name is Alfa Sheriff Islander Omo Oju Olokun, Isale-Eko, Lagos Island.

“Anyone who doesn’t know Malo, Ahmed, and Iya Asake but you’re online, calling his father all sorts of names and saying he didn’t care for Ahmed just to get traffic on your page and monetisation money, God will judge you negatively in this holy month. Because none of you people saying rubbish know this family more than we people in Isale-Eko. We both lived together in Isale Eko with these people or family, and we know each other better! Baraka Jumath and Ramadan Kareem”

On his part, Wale Balogun said, “Egbon, I don’t want to say anything about the matter from the onset, but the way people are accusing Bro Malo of neglecting Asake was really disappointing and annoying at the same time. Bro Malo used to live in my family house at No. 4, Ojuyewa Lane with Hammed for years before they moved to Okiti. So I know much about these people. Iya Hammed (Sis Fali) was eku eda. I don’t know what could have happened later on that made her turn her child against his dad. Even if Asake doesn’t want to take care of his father, she is in the right position to let the boy do the needful. From now on, I won’t keep quiet in people’s comment sections anymore because no parent deserves this kind of treatment in old age.”

Reacting to the fallout, Wale Olaleye, the deputy editor at ThisDay Newspaper wrote, “It is heartbreaking to actually realise that Portable is more sensible than Asake. He should have shut his mouth. Sad!”

On her part, Canadian based Nigerian media strategist and women advocate, Esther Ijewere, took another point in her submission of the fallout. She wrote, “I had to dig through before I found this photo of Asake from his GQ feature in April 2024. I was looking for an image that reflected both my emotions as a child and his silent response to the ongoing saga. I once left a comment when he changed his look, covering his face with tattoos. I said he was either rebranding or masking a pain he wasn’t ready to confront.

“The truth about his childhood remains unclear, aside from scattered blog posts, some painting his father in a bad light, others portraying his mother as bitter and harsh. But I am in no position to judge the father who allegedly raised him partially and then abandoned him, nor will I throw his mother under the bus. What I do know is that Asake deserves love from his family, not a public spectacle that leaves him open to criticism. In all our hot takes, I hope we remember that beneath the fame, there is a child in this body who likely longs to hear something other than “I need money.” Artists who sing about loneliness or try to detach from vulnerability are often battling deep internal struggles. There’s a void they are trying to fill. Something they crave but cannot seem to find.

“Rejection, especially from a parent, can shape a child’s entire existence. It creates a lifelong battle of defensiveness, a feeling of always being misunderstood. A child who grows up hearing “I love you” moves through life differently than one who hears “I don’t want anything to do with you.” Some wounds cannot be healed by money, fame, or influence. True healing requires conscious effort from within. We can’t force it on people either. You can tell a person to forgive without asking them to forget their lived experience. Rather than judge, I choose to send light and love to this incredible artist. No child should grow up in a world where age and cultural expectations suppress their emotions. Children raised this way often become defensive adults, struggling to express themselves, or they shut people out completely. To parents: Please, don’t let the world raise your talented children for you. Be present. Be intentional. Be the voice they hear before the noise of the world tries to define them. A child who feels truly seen and loved at home will have less to prove to the world. I wish him well.”

  • Dad, daughter arrested over grandson’s death

The police have arrested a man and his daughter over the death of his 10-year-old grandson in Ikorodu, Lagos.

A source at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the grandfather and the boy’s mother were nabbed for allegedly disposing the body without the knowledge of the father.

NAN gathered that the late Abdullah, the only child of his  parents, fell ill and died while in the mother’s custody.

The woman was living in her father’s house in Ikorodu when the incident happened.

“When the child was ill, they did not inform the father. When the child died, they did not inform him, rather, the grandfather told a scavenger to help dispose the body.

“When the child’s father demanded to see his son, he was told that the child had died. He asked for the body, they told him that he had been buried at a cemetery.

“The father reported the case to the police. When the police asked the grandfather to take the operatives to the spot of burial at the cemetery, he could not do so.

“The grandfather and his daughter have a case to answer. They will be arraigned for conspiracy and indecent behaviour,” a police source told NAN.

Contacted, command spokesman Bala Elkana said he was yet to be briefed.

  • Dad drugged daughter to sleep with her, doctor tells court

THE Ikeja Special Offences Court yesterday heard how a 35-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Emmanuel Idoko, usually drugged his 12-year-old daughter before sleeping with her.

The court was told that he laced the girl’s drink with drug to make her sleepy before having carnal knowledge of her at their 35, Akewusola Street, Oworonsoki, Lagos home..

A witness, Dr Alagbe Oyedeji, of the Mirabel Centre, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, said the girl told him under examination how her father gave her soft drinks and ‘’I will fall asleep’’.

The doctor was testifying in the charge preferred  against Idoko for the alleged sexual assault of his daughter.

Oyedeji told Justice Sybil Nwaka that she came on referral to Mirabel by the Divisional Police Officer at Ketu Police Station on November 28, 2017.

Led in evidence by the  prosecutor, A. O. Alagbe, of Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Oyedeji said the minor told him that her ordeal started in 2016 after she and her younger brother moved in with their father after their parents separated.

“The victim told me that her father came home from work one day and told her that he had heard rumours that she was no longer a virgin, and that he wanted to examine her by inserting his fingers into her private parts to see whether she was still a virgin or not.

“She said she became reluctant after her father told her that he wanted to use his manhood to test her virginity.

“When she refused, he beat her severely. He later became very nice and every night after he returned from work, he would give her soft drinks, then she would fall asleep and he would have his way.”

Oyedeji said when the minor started sleeping in school,  her class teacher asked her what happened and the girl narrated what her father had been doing to her.

The teacher, he said, reported the matter to the Ketu Police Station and the defendant was arrested.

“Upon examination of the victim’s private parts, it was discovered that it was reddened. Her urethra was also reddened.

“I also discovered that her anal opening (anus) was loosened. There were also areas of laceration around the private parts and thighs. The injuries she sustained in her private parts and thighs showed recent and previous forceful penetration,” the doctor said.

He said the test he conducted on the minor showed that she had been physically and sexually abused.

Under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Adeyemi Adegbite, Oyedeji insisted that the defendant penetrated his daughter’s private parts with his fingers

Justice Nwaka adjourned till April 3.

  • Dad left a big shoe for us to wear, says Atilade’s daughter

Family, friends and associates yesterday eulogised Nigerian Council of Physicians of Natural Medicine (NCPNM) president Prof. Magnus Atilade, who died on January 10.

His daughter, Mrs Femi Ola, said he left a big shoe for his children to wear.

They spoke at New State High School, Mushin, Lagos, during the Service of Songs and Tribute Night for the late Atilade, organised by NCPNM.

Ola said her father was a man of the people, a great accomplisher and a man of many dimensions.

“Dad was an amazing personality, he was a passionate man, a man of everybody, he was a man of many dimensions. He touched many lives, he was gentle, and he was a man of great accomplishments in academic, religion and social. He has left big shoes for us to wear. We will miss him, but we know he is in a better place,” she said.

In his exhortation, Rev Matthew Oladele of The Gospel Baptist Conference of Nigeria urged the gathering to live right, noting that everybody would die one day.

He said: “One day will come that people will celebrate you just as we are celebrating Atilade today; what will people say about you? God has blessed you to bless others, how many people have you blessed? How are you using what God has given you to benefit others? What will be said of you when you leave this world? Are you living life the way you should? All the things and positions you attain are to help others. Are you doing that?”

Deputy Director, Department of Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the Federal Ministry of Health, Tile Titus, said the late Atilade had done well for Nigeria, saying he developed natural medicine in the country.

“His death to us in the ministry is a shock. I was arranging a meeting with him and the permanent secretary in the ministry that week he died. He told me to call him the next Friday. I was shocked to hear that he died the Thursday before that. He was one of those who made sure we had traditional medicine board in Nigeria. He has left a big vacuum, but God will help us to fill it. He has left a lot of legacies and has trained a lot of people who can carry on his good deeds.”

A Consultant Ophthalmologist at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Adefule Ositelu, described the late Atilade as humble, quiet, a man called for the job and a man that did excellently well.

“He encouraged the practice of natural medicine, he was a great practitioner, he had played his part, and he was outstanding, firm and progressive. It is a pity that he could not see this to the university level. He clamoured for it because he wanted a university for natural alternative medicine in Nigeria. We will miss him for his truth and kindness,” Ositelu said.

NCPNM Vice President Prof Titilayo Oduye described the late Atilade as a beacon of light that charted a progressive course for the profession.

“He was always prepared to uplift and upgrade the council in the interest of the profession. He was a trailblazer, the first registered chiropractor of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. He had passion for Natural and Traditional Medicine. We (NCPNM) are grateful for his unquantifiable efforts in spearheading and realising the establishment, which today has become the number one umbrella body for physicians of natural medicine in Nigeria,” she said.

National Treasurer of the National Association of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners (NANTMP),  Dr Franca Mordi, described the late Atilade as an icon, a legend and a colossus.

She said: “He was a genuinely optimistic man and he continually broadened his horizons with daring decisions. He was a man that related to people from all walks of life. He was empathetic; he valued character and would always find good in others.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Green Land Clinic in Accra, Ghana, Dr Martin Amoo, described the late Atilade as humble, an achiever and a man that did not discriminate.”

  • Dad, son face N44.3m cashew nut fraud charge

A 62-year-old man, Adeyanju Gbadegesin Louis, and his son,  Mark, yesterday appeared before an Igbosere Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding an agricultural firm, Thoam Farms Ltd, of N44,844,450.

The Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, alleged that the duo obtained the cash on the pretext of supplying the company with cashew nut.

Louis and Mark were arraigned alongside their company, Society Adeglobal Resources, located at Plot C55, Amuwo-Odofin Industrial Estate, Lagos, before Chief Magistrate O. O. Oshin.

Prosecuting counsel Morufu Animashaun alleged that the defendants and others, who are on the run, committed the offences “on or about June 7, 2018 at Plot C55, Amuwo-Odofin Industrial Estate, Lagos.”

He said they cajoled the company to invest the money in a cashew nut business.

Animashaun said: “They received N44,844,450.00 from the firm on the pretext that they have in their company, cashew nut valued at the amount for instant supply.

“Upon receiving the money, they failed to supply the cashew nut and refused to return the money to the firm.”

Louis and Mark pleaded not guilty.

She ordered each surety to deposit N500, 000 in an interest yielding account of the court’s registrar.

She remanded father and son in prison custody pending their fulfilment of the bail conditions and adjourned till February 13.

  • Dad hangs self after killing his four children

ALESA, a community near Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, was yesterday the scene of horror sparked by a strange family tragedy.

A resident, Achibong Patrick, strangled his four children, who were asleep.

Achibong, 35, killed his children after chasing his hairdresser wife away from their two-room apartment.

The Nation learnt that after killing the children, aged one, three, five and eight, he set his home on fire and hanged himself.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 1am.

A source said Achibong’s wife, who was running away, shouted that her husband, a native of Ogoja in Cross River State, was after her and their children, but before neighbours could intervene, the evil deed had been done.

A neighbour, who spoke in confidence, said Achibong was notorious for beating up his wife.

He said the woman had attempted to seek divorce, which the man got wind of, leading to the sad incident.

The source said when the wife later returned home, she saw the bodies of members of her family and the burnt flat.

She was taken to an unknown destination by sympathisers.

The police have evacuated the bodies and deposited them in a mortuary.

Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident on the phone.

When asked if anybody had been arrested, he said: “Who are you going to arrest? The man chased away his wife before killing their four children. He did not stop at killing the children; he set his house ablaze before hanging himself.”

  • Dad, mum, son held for ‘burglary, theft’

The police have arrested a couple, Uroye and Margaret Teddy, their teenage son, Tega, and his lover, Karima Edom, for alleged burglary and theft.

The suspects were said to have broken into 8, Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate in Langbasa Lagos home of Mrs. Folasade Odunuga.

According to the police, Mrs. Odunuga was on a three-month vacation, which started on May 27 when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the suspects looted her car and other household items after entering her house from the ceiling.

Edom, who is said to be victim’s neighbour, allegedly informed Tega that Mrs Odunuga was away from home, laying grounds for the burglary.

Police alleged that the lovers also cooked, wined and dined in the house.

It was gathered that Tega with the aid of his parents, started looting the woman’s home and continued for weeks before Mrs. Odunuga’s maid, Eniola Abisola, came and discovered that many items were missing.

She was said to have alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adaobi Okafor, a Superintendent (SP), who mobilised her men to search the neighbourhood for suspects on the division’s watch list.

“When the detectives checked on Tega, they saw Mrs Odunuga’s Chevrolette Aveo saloon car marked AKD512AP, parked in front of his parent’s house at New Osho layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

“During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim’s house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to pack the household items to his father’s house.

“He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her house.

“Tega further revealed that his father went with him to the victim’s house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale,” said spokesman for the command, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

Oti said the police recovered the vehicle, a flat screen television, home theatre sound system, electric generator, a standing fan, five leather bags, an iPad, baby shoes and other personal items of the victim.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, charges residents to take their personal security seriously. They should ensure that their houses are entrusted in the hands of trusted relations, friends or aides whenever they travel.

“He admonished that people should go back to our old ways of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima would not have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga’s house during her long absence from home.”

  • Dad ‘forces’ teenage daughter into marriage after ‘raping’ her

•Another blames the devil for defiling own daughter

A 14-year-old girl has accused her father, Olawale Ibitoye, of raping and forcing her into marriage.

The girl was said to have made the claim at a traditional birth centre she was taken to while in labour.

Her father, she alleged, forced her to marry Moses Okurukpe, who impregnated her.

But Ibitoye denied the allegation, saying his daughter, was fond of fleeing their home at Epe in Lagos.

He denied forcing her into marriage, insisting that she brought the man and introduced him as her husband.

Ibitoye said: “I did not sleep with my daughter. She is learning a trade because she ran away from school. Then, she came with a man saying she wants to marry him. The man is Moses Okurukpe, who was also ready to marry her.

“I told him that she has not finished learning her trade; he said I should not worry he will continue the payment which is N5000. She came home with a six-month pregnancy and claimed her husband impregnated her. “I went to her husband and we both went to our town to see Olisa, the second king.”

Okurukpe added: “I was not aware of her age. She looked bigger than her age so I did not bother asking of her age. She came to my house twice. I did not marry her rightfully. I made it known to her that if one is pregnant in my town another man should not sleep with her.”

The police have also arrested another man, Ashiru Amusan, 60, for allegedly defiling his 12-year-old daughter at Akowonjo. The father blamed the devil for the development.

The suspect, who admitted raping the girl once, said he did not know what came over him.

Parading the suspects yesterday, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said the cases showed the moral decadence in the society.

According to him, the 14-year-old girl suffered double jeopardy in the hands of her father, who not only defiled her but forced her into marriage.

He said the victim opened up at the birth centre after she experienced difficulty in giving birth.

Edgal said: “This is child marriage; this is sexual abuse and exploitation of the highest order. Both the father and the husband would be charged to court. “There is a similar case of father raping his own daughter which was recorded at Shasha. A woman reported on behalf of the 12-year-old, whose biological father had been defiling. The girl begged the woman who reported the case, for a place to sleep. The woman asked her why she did not want to sleep in her family house and she revealed that her father had been having unlawful sexual intercourse with her. During interrogation, the suspect, a commercial driver, married with grown children, admitted that he committed the crime from April 22 till when he was arrested in May.

“The survivor has been taken to Mirabel Centre for medical examination. The suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.”

  • Dad, son, arraigned for ‘assaulting’ IE official

A 50-year-old man, Samuel Abilagbo and his 20-year-old son, Moses, were yesterday arraigned at an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting an official of Ikeja Electric.

The duo, who live at 2, Mount Sinai Street, Agbede, Ikorodu, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of breach of the peace and assault brought against them.

Prosecuting Sergeant Mary Ajiteru told the court that the accused battered the official, Mr Ogbeke Harrison, while trying to disconnect the power supply to their house.

“While the complainant wanted to disconnect electricity supply to their house, he was brutalised with stones and stick which left him with a permanent scar on his head.”

The offence contravened Sections 168 (d) and 172 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sections stipulate three months and one year jail terms.

Magistrate W. B. Balogun granted them N100, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like. The surties, he said, must be workers in reputable organisations.

The sureties must also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Balogun adjourned the case till July 12.
