    Palpable fear gripped over 100 passengers on board a DANA Air MD 83 aircraft on Friday when a huge bird hit the aircraft engine during take-off at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Sensing danger after the bird hit the aircraft engine, the pilot took the professional decision to discontinue the flight by making an air return.

    Air return is a safety precautionary measure taken by pilots by returning the aircraft to the aerodrome where it took off, if he is not convinced that the aircraft could get to its destination.

    The aircraft, a source hinted has been grounded as the airline’s engineers are evaluating the effects of the bird strike on the affected engine.

    Confirming the development, the spokesman of DANA Air, Kingsley Ezenwa, said, ” On 21st of April, one of our aircrafts with registration number 5N-SRI operating our 11:00 a.m. flight  from Lagos to Port Harcourt, had an air return due to bird strike during take-off from Lagos, and our captain took a professional decision and returned to the Lagos airport.

    “A bird strike is a collision between a bird and an aircraft which is airborne and as per standard safety procedure, which is the hallmark of our operation, our pilot returned to base.

    “Our passengers have however been ‘reprotected’ on another aircraft to ensure that their itinerary is not entirely disrupted. The aircraft is currently being evaluated by our engineers to determine the effect of the bird strike on the affected engine.

    “At Dana Air, the safety and comfort of our passengers will remain a top priority to us and we will stop at nothing in our commitment towards offering a safe and reliable air transportation.”

  • Dana Air wins ‘brand of the year’ at Leadership award

    Dana Air has won the Leadership Brand of the Year award for 2016.

    The airline won the award at an event held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, last week.

    Dana Air, according to organiser of the event, Mr. Sam Nda – Isaiah, was selected for its unique strides in contributing significantly to the growth of air transportation in Nigeria.

    The firm got the award for successfully pulling through the harsh operating environment, its consistency, and creating a brand synonymous with customer satisfaction in the ever -challenging aviation sector.

    Speaking at the conference with the theme: “THE RICE ECONOMY,” the chairman of Leadership Group said “the Conference and Awards is put together annually to celebrate individuals and corporate organizations who had shown distinction in their different areas.”

    DANA Air, he said was chosen as one of the companies that had shown progress despite the economic situation in the country.

    Nda – Isaiah added:  “Our choices are not influenced in anyway and our nominations go through rigorous and painstaking debates. Sometimes we fall into a dilemma and end up choosing more than one for a category. But this is good as it shows that these individuals and organizations are doing really well.’’

  • Dana boss lauds facilities at Kaduna Airport

    The Managing Director, Dana Air, Mr Jacky Hathiramani, has applauded the Minister of State Aviation, Capt. Hadi Sirika over the execution of the Kaduna Airport as alternate to Abuja Airport.

    Hathirmani gave the commendation in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday by Mr Kingsley Ezenwa, the airline’s Communications Manager.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hathirmani had earlier carried out a spot-check of the Kaduna International Airport.

    The airline boss said considering the time and the urgent need for the Abuja airport to be closed for desired maintenance, the minister and the aviation agencies should be commended.

    “This commendation is for the speed, tireless work and commitment they have shown in ensuring that the airport is world-class for passengers flying in and out of Kaduna,” he said.

    Hathirmani disclosed that more passengers were now embracing the Kaduna Airport as alternate to Abuja and cargo services were also improving gradually.

    The airline boss also said the Kaduna–Abuja expressway is now smooth and okay for passengers to connect from Kaduna to Abuja.

    “The security arrangement on the road is also commendable. I just went for a meeting in Abuja and I have taken time to assess the facilities.

    “Some of the facilities here are world-class and it is just two hours to Abuja.

     “For us, we are always conscious of the fact that passengers will be connecting Abuja from here.

    “We have made adequate arrangements to ensure that all our departures from Lagos to Kaduna and other routes are as scheduled,” he said.

     Commenting on the inability of passengers to pay their fares using Point of Sales (POS), the managing director said the airline now had its POS working.

     “We had to fast-track the process with our banks in order to reduce the burden on our passengers.

    “I also sighted an ATM somewhere around. Things are coming up to speed here and I think it’s good for the industry.

    “As you may be aware, everything we do at Dana Air is geared towards ensuring that passengers get all they need without hassles

    “Our passengers can also visit our website www.flydanaair.com for their booking, or download the Dana Mobile App which is also fast, secure and convenient for booking, reservation, payment and lots more,” he said.

    Speaking further, he urged the airline’s passengers to take advantage of the airline’s low fares and superior on-time performance.

    The airline boss advised passengers to be patient as the ministry and its agencies would continue to improve facilities at the Kaduna Airport to their satisfaction.

    We’ve implemented safety recommendations on crash – DANA Air

    DANA Air said Monday that it has implemented the safety recommendations rolled out by the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) after its crash of June 3, 2012.

    The airline disclosed this Monday in a statement signed by its head of corporate communications, Kingsley Ezenwa.

    The statement reads: “Following the release of the final report of the June 3, 2012 Accident, we wish to reassure our guests of our total commitment to their safety and comfort onboard our flights.

    “We wish to also state that Dana Air swung into action immediately the Interim Safety Recommendations were released in 2013 and as an airline strictly committed to the safety and comfort of its guests, we  implemented all the recommendations same year, as released by  AIB.

    “We did not stop at just implementing the recommendations; we also successfully passed an operational audit conducted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s Flight Safety Group and its foreign partners.

    “In 2016, after another rigorous operational audit, Dana Air was admitted into the IOSA register to underscore its strict adherence to global management and safety standards and procedures required of global carriers.

    “While we acknowledge the full report, and will continue to review it, we are glad that the report confirmed that the aircraft was airworthy at the time of departure, flight crew were certified and that we have cleared all defects during their last check.”

    Dana Air said it maintains a rich spare parts store to date.

    The statement reads: “We have doubled our maintenance and safety efforts with constant training and retraining get of our crew and ground staff.

    “The safety and comfort of our guests remains a top priority to us and may the beautiful souls of the crew and guests we lost at the unfortunate accident continue to rest in peace- Amen.

    “They remain forever in our hearts and our prayers and thoughts will continue to be with their friends and loved ones.”

     

     

     

  • Air Peace, DANA Air, others fly into Kaduna

    Kaduna International Airport was agog yesterday as five domestic carriers, Air Peace, DANA Air, Aero, Arik Air and Medview Airlines operated flights from Lagos.

    The carriers operated their scheduled flights on the route following the closure of Abuja Airport.

    Amid tight security, scores of passengers expressed excitement over the use of Kaduna Airport for flights.

    As early as 8.00 am, flights from Lagos started landing at airport.

    Apart from these carriers, ground handling firm, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCo), aviation fuel suppliers, Conoil, So Aviation, and other ancillary services providers were also on ground to facilitate smooth flight operations.

    Apart from scheduled carriers, charter operators were also at the airport to facilitate smooth operations.

    Airport security, aerodrome safety and fire fighters were also on hand.

    It was gathered that government has secured agreement with a private transport firm, Chisco Limited with security escort patrol vehicles to convey passengers between Kaduna and Abuja as well as between Abuja and Kaduna.

  • Vacancy: Imo Air operated by Dana begins recruitment

    Imo Air operated by Dana Air has commenced recruitment of indigenes of the state to occupy various positions in the airline as promised by Governor Rochas Okorocha, during the launch of the airline on 24 of January 2017.

    During the interview which commenced in the first week of February, over 400 Imo indigenes participated in the process even as the airline prepares to hit the ground running with a number of initiatives to better impact the indigenes of the state and the South East at large.

    According to the Accountable Manager of Imo Air operated by Dana Air, Mr Obi Mbanzuo, “we have commenced recruitment of Imo state indigenes to occupy various positions in the airline and the process will be in batches.  

    We intend keeping to the promise of the Governor and at the same time; we are trying not to over bloat our workforce.  As you may be aware, Dana Air was selected to manage Imo Air as a result of our consistency, on-time performance, world-class in-flight service, and shrewd managerial style and we intend sticking to this style just so we can match-up to the operational challenges in the industry.’’

    ‘Definitely, all qualified candidates will be absorbed and as an airline committed to giving back to the society; we are already looking at other areas to impact and contribute our quota to increasing the traffic to Imo state, to make the state an investment and tourism hub in the south-east.’’

    Governor Okorocha while reacting to the news of the recruitment said ‘the exercise is just a confirmation of the promises we made during the launch of Imo Air. I am happy about this, as people thought we were joking about this well thought-out idea. 

    ”The truth is, we want people to visit Imo State for both business and pleasure and going into an airline business was just a perfect business decision, considering that Imo state is the fastest developing city in Nigeria at the moment. And as you know, tourism and aviation are a perfect combination, one cannot work without the other.”

    “We are also monitoring the progress of work at the Cargo International Airport and hopefully in April or May, we will receive the first Cargo plane in Imo State. Imolites should expect more Imo-centric initiatives and very soon, the 10% discount for Imo indigenes will also be unveiled.  We are still working out the modalities and we want to prove to the world that this administration walks the talk and doesn’t just pay lip service to projects.”

    ”Let me also mention here that, Dana Air the operator of Imo Air; is part of a massive conglomerate which spans Automobile, Aviation, Pharmaceutical, Steel, Plastics, Water, Chemical, Banking, and Real Estate. And the idea is to have them invest in various areas in Imo state, particularly in Agriculture.     Dana Air having flown a record 4.5 million passengers in the last eight years of its operation, entered into an airline partnership with the Imo State Government to boost tourism, business activities and employment opportunities in the state.

  • AIB to release reports on Bristow helicopters, Dana Air crashes

    The Commissioner of Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Engr. Akin Olateru, said on Thursday that there are at least 37 accident reports pending at the bureau at the time he assumed office in January.

    He also said the final report of the Dana Air crash which killed 163 people in June 3, 2012 in Lagos and three others would be submitted to the Presidency for approval before being released to the public.

    Besides the Dana accident report, information on the  two Bristow helicopter and AOS helicopter crashes will be forwarded to the Presidency for approval.

    Olateru stated these at a forum organised by the Aviation Round Table (ART) in Lagos.

    He, however, assured that the reports of the four accidents would be made known by next week while a minimum of 10 accident reports would also be released to the public before the end of the year.

    The AIB chief stressed that the era of keeping accident reports in the bureau’s wardrobe was over with his management team.

    Dana Air said it flew four million passengers  in the last eight years of its existence, its Accountable Manager, Obi Mbanuzuo, has said.

    He disclosed this last week in Lagos at its eighth anniversary.

    He said the carrier would continue to provide safe and customer- centric services.

    Despite the challenges in the industry, he said, the airline has remained strong in pursuit of its goal in changing  the face of air travel in Nigeria.

    The carrier he said has remained consistent in offering on-time departure on the routes it operates.

    He attributed the airline’s  consistency to its shrewd managerial style, the   commitment of its staff as well as  support of its customers.

    Obi said:‘’We are indeed proud to have flown over  four  million passengers in the last  eight years and we are very grateful for the support and patronage we have enjoyed since commencing operations.

    “We would like to assure our loyal guests and the travelling public that we will not relent in our efforts to deliver world class services that  Nigerians will  be proud of.”

    On safety and security, Obi said the airline would continue to adhere to the maintenance schedule of its aircraft, as prescribed by the manufacturers and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

    He said the airline has completed an audit by the NCAA and its foreign partners, the Flight Safety Group, to put the carrier on a sound footing.

    He disclosed at an event to mark the eight anniversary of the airline’s commercial flight operations .

    He said the carrier will continue to provide safe and customer- centric air transport services to its customers .

    According to him, in spite of the visible operational challenges in the industry, the airline has remained strong. He attributed the airlines’ consistency to its shrewd managerial style, passion and commitment of its staff and the unending support of its amazing customers.’’
