Speaking at a brief ceremony in the conference room of the Godswill Akpabio International stadium, the Media and Communications Manager of Dana Air, Kingsley Ezenwa said the carrier was excited to continue what it started last year.

He said: “We  are back again to extend what we started last year. We believe in Akwa United and the club actually did well last season and looks good for the next season.’’

“We are also committed to developing sports particularly football in Nigeria. We are the first airline to have taken this step towards making our league glamorous and we hope other credible organizations will follow because we believe that our league can actually get to that level.’’

Speaking further Kingsley said, “ for us at Dana Air, it’s not just about flying to Akwa Ibom state, but contributing positively to the growth and development of the state.’’

The Dana Air spokesman also congratulated Nigerians and the super Eagles on their qualification for AFCON 2019 in Cameroun, saying ‘we are proud of the Super Eagles of Nigeria for bringing  glory to our country Nigeria and for encouraging us to continue to believe in our greatness.’’

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Akwa United, Elder Paul Bassey described Dana Airlines as worthy partners and expressed delight that the contract has been extended for another year.

“We are particularly grateful to Dana Airlines for this amazing partnership with our club. This partnership has relieved us of the stress of tedious road travels to league matches especially the northern and western parts of this country”.

”The success story of Dana Airlines in the Nigerian air space in the last ten years is a clear testimony of your commitment to Nigerians and we are proud to be associated with Dana Airlines through this sponsorship agreement “.

”We will be going into a new NPFL season confident that we will do well to bring glory to all our fans, supporters as well as Dana Air for identifying  with and staying by us,”Bassey said.

Dana Air recently celebrated 10 years in Nigeria’s airspace with a record breaking load factor, an unrivaled on-time performance, world class in-flight service and customer-centric products and services.

Meanwhile, Dana Air has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a strong commitment to continue to offer its passengers best services hinged on safety and customer satisfaction.

But the airline said it has to grapple with operational challenges not limited to poor airport infrastructure, multiple taxes, and high cost of aviation fuel.

The Chief Operating Officer of Dana Air, Mr. Obi Mbanuzuo, said despite the challenges Nigerian carriers grapple with, the airline has survived the last 10 years, providing jobs, engaging in human capital development and social responsibility, while at the same time offering flight services.

On the operational front, Obi said: “We have made significant and firm progress in our strategic route and fleet expansion program. Our good understanding of the workings of the industry has been an added advantage and very soon we will announce the steps and progress made. It is our desire to cover more cities in Nigeria, but we have to be strategic about it.

“Having flown over 2.7 million passengers in the last 10 years of our operations with an on-time performance and  a world-class in-flight service that is yet unrivalled, our desire is to do another 10 years offering Nigerians the best of service hinged on customer satisfaction and safety.”

Obi said the airline remained unflinching in its resolve to maintain what it has come to be known for, but appealed that the needed support be given to airlines. “If the Value Added Tax (VAT) can be removed as assured by the Federal Government, we will be happy and this will surely have a positive impact too,” he said.

He stated that the 10th anniversary will be a month-long celebration; that the airline will appreciate its passengers for their loyalty, its staff for their constant show of professionalism, passion and loyalty, and the media for their support at all times, and  its vendors and partners  for their patience and understanding.

Obi went on: “When we commenced operations 10 years ago, precisely on November 10, 2008, our desire was to change the convention and exceed the flying aspiration of our guests with our world-class services. Today, with the support and loyalty of our esteemed guests, we have been able to achieve 10 years of service to Nigerians.

“As you may be aware, we are about the second private domestic airline in Nigeria’s history to achieve this feat, and it’s on record that over 60 airlines have gone under without being able to even survive five years in the industry.

“It hasn’t been easy, as we have had to grapple with a lot of challenges in the last 10 years ranging from infrastructure, multiple taxes, and high cost of aviation fuel, but we are delighted to have been able to brave the storm and I must say our commitment, proficient management style, high standards, and passion for excellence brought us this far.”

On the airline’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) since inception, Obi said: “We have done quite a lot. Through our charitable trust, the Dana Foundation, we have been fulfilling our CSR with an in-flight envelop donation programme and this has helped to raise millions of naira for the sickle cell foundation in Lagos, as well as autism patients.

“We have also supported a couple of other similar organisations like Rotary Club on blood donation and cancer fighting organisations like project PinkBlue, Children Living with Cancer Foundation just to mention a few.”

Commenting on the airline’s sponsorship of two Nigerian clubs, the Dana Air Accountable Manager said Dana Air is the only Nigerian airline at the moment sponsoring two Nigerian league clubs- Heartland FC of Owerri and Akwa United FC in Akwa Ibom State.

He said in unveiling the multi-million naira deal for both clubs, the airline considered their status. “For Akwa United, they just won the Aiteo Cup at the time, and Heartland, the governor wanted something special not just for his players but his people and our partnership with the government was part of what the state-owned club was enjoying at the moment.

“This has also helped ease their transportation to away games and improve their performance,” he explained.

The manager said as part of the airline’s commitment to helping the teeming youths achieve their dreams and also grow their craft, it has supported a couple of entertainment and comedy shows in Nigeria.

“Dana Air cannot employ every Nigerian youth even if it’s our desire, but how else can we help them grow? It is by supporting and encouraging them in whatever positive thing their hand finds doing and we are committed to this as a youth-friendly brand,” he said.

He added that the company has in its 10 years of service to Nigeria done quite a lot in the area of sports, health and well-being of Nigerians, community development, employment and the economy, with its constant support towards the success of the Nigerian Economic Summit.

  • AIB probes DANA Air incident

    AIB probes DANA Air incident

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has begun investigation into Tuesday’s Dana Air incident at the Port- Harcourt Airport.

Its spokesman, Tunji Oketumbi, said a team from the bureau, led by the director of operations, Capt. Dayyabu Danraka, was already on ground in Port Harcourt for investigation into the incident.

The team is expected to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the incident and make recommendations to forestall future occurrence.

The investigation followed the official report of the incident by the airline to AIB.

The incident is coming barely a week after Delta Airline also had serious incident and had to make an air return to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport for an emergency landing.

The Dana aircraft with registration number 9J0363, flying from Abuja to Port Harcourt Airport, skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

The airline attributed the incident to bad weather and torrential rain at the time of landing.

No casualty was recorded as passengers and crew disembarked safely.

The 49 passengers in the plane were as at yesterday yet to retrieve their luggage from the damaged aircraft, almost 24 hours after the incident.

The displeased passengers were not sure of when their luggage, still inside the aircraft, would be released to them, to conclude the one hour journey they started from Abuja on Tuesday evening.

It was gathered at the airport that a team of experienced investigators and experts from Dana’s headquarters in Lagos arrived Port Harcourt yesterday morning and had been busy at the airport to ascertain what went wrong and the extent of damage to the plane.

Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Dana’s investigators at Port Harcourt airport did not allow reporters to join the team or move close to the scene of the incident.

A female passenger, who spoke with our reporter, but pleaded not to be named, said: “I did not know what happened along the line, as the plane suddenly skidded off the runway. Everybody was just shouting and praying, before the aircraft finally stopped.

“There was nobody to direct us or show us where to go. Everybody was just running helter-shelter. No medical service. We are here (at Port Harcourt International Airport) to get our luggage, but they said the manager is still at the incident’s scene.”

An elderly male passenger, who also spoke with our reporter, but would not want his name in print, said: “We have been here (airport) as early as 8 a.m. today (Wednesday) to get our luggage, but they are not giving it to us.

“As I speak with you, members of my family are not even aware of what is happening to me, because my phones are inside my bag in the plane.”

None of the officials of Dana, a fully private-sector-owned carrier, which commenced flight operations on November 10, 2008, and FAAN at the airport was ready to speak with our reporter, even anonymously, on the flight number 9J0363, what went wrong and the extent of damage to the aircraft.

FAAN’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, stated that the aircraft overshot the runway.

Dana’s Corporate Communications Manager Kingsley Ezenwa Okwudili noted that bad weather and torrential rain at the time of landing, was responsible for the incident.

On the airlines’ fleet and route expansion plans, Obi said: ‘’Our decisions are strategic and it is very difficult to forecast in this part of the world, but I can confirm to you that we have commenced talks with some notable aircraft manufacturers and we should increase our fleet in no distant time. Even with our current capacity, we are doing very well and have a strategy to meet the demands of the flying public.’’

He said Dana was very confident of its model as presently, adding that it is the only Nigerian carrier to have undergone an operational audit conducted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and its foreign partners, The Flight Safety Group.

“We also scaled the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and we wish to assure our guests that we are not resting on our oars as our commitment to professionalism is unwavering,’’Obi added.

Also speaking at the event, IATA’s Area Manager, South-West, Dr Samson Fatokun, said not all airlines are members of IATA as a result of its stringent admission process but commended Dana Air for making the list and joining over 300 airlines presently on the association’s registry.

“We have requirements for any airline that wants to join the  to the IATA family  and one of that requirement is that they must pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and this has kept most of them back.  IATA comes with a requirement of quality and people expect the airline to operate with recommended standards of aviation globally.
