Ogun, Daniel row over alleged contravention of building laws deepens

The row between the Ogun State Government and former Governor Senator Gbenga Daniel over alleged contravention of building regulations by the latter took a new dimension on Monday.

Daniel charged the Dapo Abiodun – led administration has no moral right to paste notices on properties if the same has not pasted on the Governor’s private residence in Iperu, Abiodun’s home town.

‎But the State Government said the laws were flr public good and not to victimise anybody, adding the physical planning law and regulations are enforceable at any time and for all time, on all developments in the state including developments that preceded the law.

‎However, Daniel said the Abiodun’s private residence in Iperu faces Iperu – Ode Remo road without any setback, wondering why the same notices had not been pasted on it if Ogun State Government had no “ulterior motive” in targeting him and his properties.

‎The former Governor recalled that the Aseludero Court Hall, Sagamu, was where he raised Abiodun’s hands in the build up to the 2019 governorship election, wondering how the property had just contravene building regulations six years after Abiodun came to power.

‎He spoke on Monday at the Aseludero Hall within his Aseludero Court private residence, Sagamu through Mr Steve Oliyide of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Media Office while briefing newsmen with former Commissioners in attendance, Including Akogun Kola Onadipe, a building specialist.

‎Reaffirming that Dapo Abiodun is “persecuting” him “politically,” he declared that his “political fate in 2027” – apparently referring to his re-election ambition, does not rest on the Governor but his people whom, he stressed, have been supporting his political career since 2003.

‎Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the 10th National Assembly, warned the ongoing political persecution by Abiodun under the guise of building contravention, could plunge the state into “chaos” if not properly guided.

‎”Does his house in Iperu facing Iperu – Ode – Isara road has approved setback? That house should be demolished. If the administration had not pasted any notice of contravention on his property, it does not have moral right to demolish any property in the state,” the Senator declared.

‎But speaking through the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Tunji Odunlami, the Government stated that the goal of physical planning laws and regulations is to aid urban development and control land use in the public interest.

Clarifying this on Monday at a briefing at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Commissioner stated that the exercises were aimed at verifying the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings.

The owners of such properties, Odunlami noted, were served due notices to approach the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, an agency of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, to present relevant documents in conformity with existing building laws and regulations.

“It is pertinent to note that this is a daily routine and ongoing activity of this agency and is devoid of witch-hunting, and therefore not designed to harm the interests of any individual.

“It is a simple and transparent approach that is known and adopted worldwide, including in most states in Nigeria. What we are currently doing is no exception.

“This exercise has been done in Abeokuta and is now extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, where there is no fuss except this one. It is also going to be carried out in Ota and Ilaro, where we also have GRAs,” he said.

The commissioner emphasised that the owner of any building served with the notice only needs to approach the office that issued the notice and present their permit and other documents for verification.

“As we speak, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has yet to do so or make any representation to that effect.

“That is why whenever OGSG issues enforcement notices, genuine developers respond through the proper channels by justifying their developments or seeking plan adjustments and ratifications,” Odunlami stated.

Highlighting the content of the law, the commissioner said: “Section 73 of the State’s Physical Planning Law provides that an enforcement notice may be issued under subsection (I) of this Section, notwithstanding that the unauthorized development, renovation, alteration, repair, addition, or violation took place before the commencement of this Law.”

  • Abiodun, Daniel in fresh face off over threat to demolish ex-gov’s property

Abiodun, Daniel in fresh face off over threat to demolish ex-gov’s property

Former Ogun State governor,  Gbenga Daniel has accused the governor Dapo Abiodun – led government of  marking  his Asoludero Court, a  private residence built in 2004 in Sagamu for demolition for  contravening building regulations.

Daniel, who is a serving Senator representing Ogun East in the 10th National Assembly, also named  Conference Hotel Sagamu which was built in 2013, and the annex erected in 2015 as his other properties penciled for demolition.

The said structures located in Government Reservation Area (GRA) Sagamu, according to the notices, were constructed without permit and adequate setback among other contraventions.

The Nation reports that days after Senator Ibikunle Amosun came to power in 2011, his administration also threatened to bring those structures down for alleged contravention.

In a statement yesterday  by  Steve Oliyide of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Media Office, the former governor described the latest step by the state government as “political persecution” on the watch of governor Abiodun.

He revealed that at about 4.pm on Friday, some people claiming to be agents of the government of Ogun State posted “Notices of Contravention, Quit and threats of demolition” on his residential and commercial properties in Sagamu.

Noting that the action is not an isolated incident, he said the latest act of persecution followed a similar pattern of illegal demolitions allegedly carried out by Abiodun’s administration, citing demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the governor.

He stated, “We strongly condemn this latest act of political persecution by Governor Dapo Abiodun, as evidenced by the recent issuance of these Notices which were dated August 8, 2025, as a clear demonstration of the governor’s malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.

“The documents, concerning these properties cite “suspected” offenses related to construction without adequate permits (which is laughable). This is a ludicrous and flimsy excuse, as the properties in question have been in existence for many years. For instance, the Asoludero Court was built in 2004, while the Conference Hotel Sagamu was built in 2013, and the Annex since 2015. The governor’s administration is now attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 to demolish buildings that were legally constructed long before the law was even in existence.

“This action is not only politically motivated but also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. The Notices in themselves are clear breaches of procedures which allows adequate time intervals between Notifications on contraventions, Quits and the penalties, if indeed there was any, is not a demolition or a threat of it. Governor Abiodun’s administration has completely bypassed this procedure, issuing a “Notice of Contravention” and a “Notice to Quit” simultaneously, with an immediate threat of demolition. This is not a legal process; it is a thuggish tactic designed to intimidate and inflict damage.

“It is worth noting that this is not an isolated incident. This latest act of persecution follows a similar pattern of illegal demolitions carried out by Governor Abiodun’s administration. We recall with disgust the illegal demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to the wife of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the Governor as no government agent will be sent on such assignment at ungodly hours of the night, even on a weekend on equally flimsy excuses. The matter is currently in court, and the state has already lost several applications at the Ogun State High Court and another at the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, a clear indication that their actions lack legal merit.

“Governor Dapo Abiodun is taking political vindictiveness to a shameful and dangerous level, without any regard for extant laws or common decency. We call on all well-meaning citizens, human rights organizations, and legal bodies to stand with us in condemning this egregious abuse of power. We will not be silent in the face of this injustice and will use all legal means at our disposal to ensure that Governor Abiodun is held accountable for his lawless actions.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State government has dismissed  the former governor’s claims as untrue.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy,  Kayode Akinmade, said the claim by  Senator Daniel’s Media Office, was a deliberate attempt to portray the government in bad light and create disaffection in the Gateway State.

Akinmade accused the media office of feeding members of the public with misinformation.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Ogun State Government has been drawn to a press statement issued by the Media Office of the Senator representing Ogun East and a former Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel,  on Saturday, August 9 and titled “Political Persecution as Governor Abiodun Issues Quit, Demolition Notices on Daniel’s properties in Ogun State.”

“The statement written in extremely bad taste and with intent to cause disaffection and foment chaos in the state alleges that Governor Dapo Abiodun posted Notices of Contravention, Quit and threats of demolition on the Asoludero Court Sagamu private residence of Gbenga Daniel, the Conference Hotels Limited, Sagamu and the hotel Annex of the former Governor of Ogun State, with intent to illegally demolish those properties.

“The statement framed the said notices  purportedly received on Friday, August 8, as a clear demonstration of  “malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.” Nothing can be further from the truth.

“Of course, in what has become a familiar pattern, Senator Daniel and his Media Office have been  ascribing political motives to a routine procedure, suggesting that they have something to hide and do not mind using underhand tactics to achieve their sinister  objectives.

“Contrary to the blatant distortions  of facts and egregious purveyors of falsehood  being propagated by the statement in question, the Ogun State Government is not engaged in any untoward move against Otunba Gbenga Daniel in anyway.

“The fact of the matter, quite simply, is that in his holistic approach to  development efforts across the length and breadth of Ogun State, His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has  embarked not only on building new communities as exemplified by the affordable housing estates and the yellow roof revolution but also on the redevelopment of Ogun State’s towns and cities through urban renewal.

“This, he started with Ibara GRA in Abeokuta, the state capital, and is  being extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode GRAs.

“This initiative involves the auditing of existing developments within these areas in order to determine the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals and other commercial buildings.

“This is a statutory and due process requirement which will provide information for any government intervention. And this informed the development audit exercise currently being carried out simultaneously both in Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu GRAs.

“Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s building happens to be within the Sagamu GRA and among those that were served notices as required under the Town Planning Law and Regulation of Ogun State. Many other structures were also similarly served. The exercise is a continuous one until the objective of government for the exercise is achieved.

“This  process is not new. It had been in existence and operated even during his tenure as Governor of the State. The GRA is a government designed and allocated estate and it is  subject to regulatory and oversight functions of government in perpetuity.

“All Otunba Gbenga Daniel needs to do, like every other person’s in  similar situation that have been served with such  notices in that neighbourhood, is to present his planning permit and land title to the relevant government agency office for verification within the time specified in the notices rather than resorting to cheap blackmail. There are no exemptions under the law except as permitted by that Law.

“Did the distinguished senator not conduct a check around the neighbourhood before hastily rushing to the media to demonise Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration, as usual?

“The statement in question jumped the gun by saying that the Government is focusing on Senator Daniel. That is a barefaced lie. It is the duty of the Government to carry out audits and for someone who has been in office as governor and who is now a Senator to be crying wolf is highly unfortunate.

“It seems that Senator Gbenga Daniel and his crew will do anything they can to drag the name of Governor Dapo Abiodun into every issue imaginable just to score cheap political points. This is not a hallmark of statesmanship, a topic that the distinguished senator likes to talk about with flourish; it is a dark tactic.

“Nobody is bigger than the State. Senator Gbenga Daniel is distinguished no doubt, but he is not bigger than Ogun State. He should submit himself unreservedly to the same laws he once swore twice to uphold. He should refrain from elevating every issue of his contact with government institutions to a personal vendetta by governor “Abiodun, who obviously holds him in high esteem. Since his referenced buildings must have conformed with government regulations, there should not be any problem.

“The distinguished Senator knows the law and has presumably abided by it, so why is he crying foul instead of simply complying with lawful directive, supremely confident in the knowledge that he has done no wrong, and knowing the rights afforded him by the Constitution and the courts?

“No one should assign impure motives to a routine procedure. If anyone is after Senator Gbenga Daniel, it is certainly not the Governor of Ogun State.”

Ogun Cargo Airport: Don’t distract Abiodun, NAOSS tells Daniel

The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has called on the former governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel, not to cause any distraction for the performing administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun, by whipping up unnecessary sentiments through press interviews.

NAOSS in a statement signed by its national president, Kehinde Thomas, in Abeokuta on Monday, May 20, chided Daniel for blaming the media for underreporting his achievements in government as the governor between 2003 and 2011.

According to NAOSS, the Ogun East Senator has himself to blame for preoccupying himself with needless political wars and bickering with critical stakeholders while his tenure lasted.

The ex-governor in a recent interview with The Nation, lamented that his administration suffered a media blackout which led to poor reportage of his government’s achievements.

He was also quoted to have said that the foundation of most of the projects, especially the Agro-Cargo Airport, embarked upon by Governor Abiodun, was laid by his government between 2003 and 2011.

But reacting to the outburst of Senator Daniel, NAOSS said the former governor should rather commend Governor Abiodun for building the airport which was left at its conception stage for over a decade before 2019.

The students’ body described the statement attributed to Daniel that Abiodun was taking accolades for the project initiated by his administration as not only “a distraction for a performing governor, but finding flimsy excuses for the failure of his administration to deliver a project several millions of naira were sunk into”.

Thomas said that the former governor by now should realize that Governor Abiodun-led administration in the state is not paying lip service to espousing good governance in the state but walking his talk on making Ogun the number one destination for investors in Nigeria and beyond, with the construction of the airport with the longest runway in the country.

He alleged that Senator Daniel’s years in the saddle were characterized by the promotion of thuggery, cultism, and political intolerance, while on the contrary, Governor Abiodun has espoused political inclusiveness, tolerance, fairness, equity, justice, and even distribution of projects across the three senatorial districts in the state.

NAOSS National President, however, urged the former governor to wake up from his political slumber and give credit to the incumbent governor for his show of tolerance to past governors in the state.

He said: “Governor Abiodun has demonstrated better political maturity by breaking the cycle of political intolerance and harsh treatment exhibited by Senator Daniel towards his predecessor in office and the eight years of humiliation he equally suffered in the hands of his successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

“Ogun State people are yet to forget the harsh treatment Daniel meted out to his predecessor in office, Aremo Olusegun Osoba. The eight years of political humiliation slammed on Daniel by his successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, is also fresh in the memory of the people. Our people are not fools and they cannot be hoodwinked by the political marriage of inconvenience between the hitherto political foes, all to distract the administration of Governor Abiodun. The people of the Gateway State know better not to trust the duo of Daniel and Amosun no matter their antics, but, to support the governor who has lowered the political temperature in Ogun, even in the face of stark provocation,” Thomas submitted.

CSOs petition Senate, accuse Daniel of plot to destabilise Ogun

Twenty-One pro-democracy organizations have petitioned the Nigerian Senate, accusing a former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel of plotting to destabilise the state.

The groups said Daniel, who is the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District is creating tension in the Gateway State by his incessant attacks on the state government and Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Speaking on behalf of the groups after submitting the petition in Abuja on Friday, Comrade Johnson Okuwatobi said the Senate must call Otunba Daniel to order.

He noted that Ogun State has been peaceful, devoid of any political gangsterism until recently.

The groups, in their petition, said: “We wish to bring to the attention of the Nigerian Senate and the general public the worrisome actions and statements being made by Senator Gbenga Daniel, which have now contributed to the creation of tension and division within Ogun State.

“Over recent months, Senator Gbenga Daniel has engaged in a series of public attacks on Governor Dapo Abiodun, resorting to inflammatory rhetoric and actions that are detrimental to the peace and progress of Ogun State. These actions have created an environment of unnecessary tension and conflict within the state.

“As advocates for peace, unity, and responsible governance, we firmly believe that political disagreements should be addressed through lawful and democratic means, rather than through the incitement of discord and public acrimony. The people of Ogun State deserve leaders who prioritize their welfare and development over personal or political rivalries.

“In light of these concerns, we hereby petition the Nigerian Senate to call Senator Gbenga Daniel to order, over his actions and statements, which have undermined the peace and stability of Ogun State. We call on the Senate to assess whether his conduct is consistent with the standards of ethical behaviour expected of a member of the Senate.”

The groups also urged all political stakeholders in Ogun State to prioritize the well-being of the people and engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation for the betterment of the state.

Ogun State, the groups added, deserves leaders who work together for its progress and prosperity.

“We hope that the Nigerian Senate will act swiftly and decisively to address this matter and ensure that our democracy is strengthened through the promotion of responsible and respectful political discourse,” they added.

The petition was signed by Campaign for Democracy and Justice, Centre for Human Rights and Justice, Sustainable Initiative for Good Governance, Activists for Good Governance, Media Rights Concern, Lawyers Network for Change, Coalition of Democrats for Good Governance, Centre for Justice, Lagos, Democratic Youth Council, Coalition for Good Governance, Media Rights Concern among others.

  • A paragraph for Daniel

Would men live their names, the world would be a wonderful place. Indeed, many of us have names inspired by lofty ideal and high expectations and the Holy Bible may be said to be the treasure trove of names-to-love. Samuel, Joshua, Moses, Daniel, Stephen, John, Paul, Peter – a thousand ready-names!  No doubt, parents christen their children after biblical heroes so those names could redound on their lives.

But hardly anyone remembers anymore, it seems, the import and meaning of these names. How could a Moses, for instance, be bereft of leadership acumen and spiritual prowess? Why would a man be named Paul yet he be ordinary; yet he be not imbued with burning zeal for Christ?

But let’s concern ourselves with Daniel today. Daniel of the Bible is such a man of impact and character that he makes a book of the Bible. And his is no ordinary book just as he is no mean man. Daniel epitomizes godliness. His very life is a book on faithfulness, integrity, discipline and contentment. For instance, Daniel preferred vegetables and water to the king’s special delicacies. The king’s meal is abomination to Daniel; a defilement. (Dan. 8:18).

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, ruler of that ancient kingdom was so thrilled by Daniels divine nature that he bowed before Daniel and worshipped Daniel’s God. And at the height of his power and eminence, Daniel prevailed even in the den of wild lions. The captive boy from Judah had been catapulted by sheer excellent spirit to exalted position of leadership. Overtaken by envy, the owners of the land plotted against him… but the plotters and their families ended up not only in the den, but in the belly of lions.

Most spectacularly, Daniel’s escapade led King Darius to write:

“To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: … I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel… for He is the living God” (Dan. 6: 25-26, KJV).

But a certain other Daniel of Nigerian stock has not read much about his namesake, it appears. Though, just as Daniel, the captive boy from Judah is imbued with leadership, Otunba Justus Olugbenga Daniel, OGD for short, is also a leader of his people. But in the news currently, OGD acts like a flagellating antenna. He has just abandoned his political party which he led to an electoral defeat. He made to hop on to the moving train of the winning party but for the horde of booing crowd. Right now he sits right there in the puddle of his own equivocations, the butt of raucous jokes. Not a Daniel is he?

  • Loyalists plead with Daniel not to quit partisan politics

THOUSANDS of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel’s supporters yesterday pleaded with him not to quit active partisan politics.

The supporters, who met with Daniel at his “Asoludero Hall”, within his home in Sagamu GRA, Ogun State,  protested that his resignation from politics got to the media without the former governor first consulting them.

The loyalists, who took turn to speak, hinged their demands on the fact that their efforts contributed to the emergence of Prince Dapo Abiodun, as the state’s governor-elect on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).

One of the top loyalists, Ifekayode Akinbode, led other members  to prostrate for Daniel with the women holding his legs, pleading passionately that he should lead them into APC.

Daniel, who governed Ogun State on the ticket of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for eight years, convened the stakeholders’ meeting of his loyalists under the aegis of the “OGD Political Family” at his Sagamu home, to formally announce his withdrawal from partisan politics.

He explained that his foray into politics was accidental and necessitated by the need to “awaken the sleeping giant” – Ogun State –  from slumber. Having met that need, Daniel said it was important that he leaves the stage when the “ovation is loudest”.

Daniel also lamented that he had been “battered,” “bruised” and “called names because of politics”, hence his “resolve to quit at a time there is much outcries against sit tight leaders”.

He also narrated how he failed at getting Ladi Adebutu as well as the governorship candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC)  Gboyega Nasir Isiaka to work together after the court had validated Senator Buruji Kashamu as the PDP gubernatorial candidate.

The former governor also lamented that members of his political family failed to listen to him on a number of occasions.

After their deliberations, the PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central during the just concluded 2019 general elections put the matter to a voice vote whether to choose between remaining in PDP or joining the APC.

But in unison, they all resolved to collectively join the APC.

The declaration ignited a spontaneous chanting of the APC slogans “Change” and “Next Level”.

  • Gbenga Daniel quits PDP, partisan politics

The Director-General of the Abubakar Atiku Campaign Organisation, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, unexpectedly called it quits with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday, 21 days after Atiku lost the presidential race.

The former Ogun State governor said he was quitting partisan politics, citing personal reasons.

Daniel, in a March 14, 2019, letter to the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, said he had “resolved to immerse myself in some other vocations and take on some new challenges.”

He had, on the eve of the March 9 governorship election, asked his supporters to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun who later emerged victorious.

The letter entitled: Resignation from Partisan Politics  and addressed to the national chairman reads “This is to inform you of my intention to resign from active and partisan politics with effect from today, the 14th day of March, 2019.

“My decision in this regard is entirely personal to me and having served in various capacities, including as Governor of Ogun State, I have resolved to immerse myself in some other vocations and take on some new challenges.

“I joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State on Sunday, the 9th of September, 2001 at an event which was described as one of the most ceremonial political rallies in our recent political history in the South Western part of Nigeria. We rose from that rally to create a highly robust and effective political campaign machinery which resulted in an electoral victory for the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State in 2003; this movement and vibration affected the politics of the region positively with a victory in five  states of the South West.

“I served as Governor of Ogun State for eight years and our administration till today remains a point of reference in terms of physical, social, economic, educational and human capital development since the State was created in 1976.

“Notwithstanding these widely acclaimed achievements however, our party, the Peoples Democratic Party ran into trouble waters towards the end of our administration (about the year 2009) which led to the sad loss in the election of 2011, and regrettably ten  years after the party has been unable to resolve those internal disputes and challenges.

“Meanwhile, the PDP in Ogun State was confronted with a very difficult situation in matter of choice. Whereas the national leadership of our party, recognized one candidate for the 2019 election, by court pronouncements another candidate, and in compliance with those court orders, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognized was on the INEC list. The candidates recognized by INEC were not acceptable to the national leadership of the party. Our situation was then compounded because the candidate which the court and INEC recognized and accepted as valid has also been expelled by the party. This was the dilemma we found ourselves as we approached the March 9, 2019 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

“Going forward, we have responded to the yearnings of our people and joined others in emplacing an administration that we believe will better serve the interests of our people than what currently exists. The rest they say is now history.

“I must say that looking back, I do not have any regrets over that patriotic choice and decision, especially as several of our citizens, leaders and stakeholders in the state and outside have commended that singular action. Many stakeholders within and outside Ogun State feel fulfilled, excited and grateful about our decision to join others in putting a stop to a regime that was believed to be against the collective and general welfare of our people.

“Let me also add, that in the last few months, I have had one of the rare privileges of travelling round the entire length and breadth of our great country on at least two occasions; the first being during my campaigns to become the National Chairman of our great party, and later as the Director General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organization (APCO).

“I must sincerely admit that in the course of all these travels, I have built a network of contacts, of friends and associates in a mutually rewarding relationships which I cherished most and greatly too. I am therefore persuaded that I have fewer points to make and prove in my political journeys in partisan politics.

“My decision to quit partisan politics notwithstanding, I have decided to rejuvenate my charity based organization, the Gateway Front Foundation (GFF) which will literally continue to dispense succour to our people in need, address and assist in the areas of some of their health challenges; I also plan on resuscitation of the non-partisan Political Leadership Academy (POLA) which I established some years ago as a platform of political education to our citizens.

“Without doubt, I will miss the company of my friends and associates and all those relationships I built in the course of the years all over the country.

“While I crave for your kind understanding, accept assurances of my highest regards.

    Yours faithfully,

    Otunba (Engr.) Gbenga Daniel.

    Governor of Ogun State (2003-2011).

Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, confirmed that the letter emanated from his boss.

The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies.

The document indicated that many of those affected had earlier been placed on similar legal restrictions by the courts and security agencies including restriction of movement, seizure of passport, temporary forfeiture of assets, freezing of accounts and others.

Explaining the government’s action in a statement yesterday, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), Mallam Garba Shehu said:  “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.

“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.

“Also, the financial transactions of these persons of interest are being monitored by the relevant agencies to ensure that the assets are not dissipated and such persons do not interfere with, nor howsoever corrupt the investigation and litigation processes.

“It is instructive to note that EO6 was specifically directed to relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter.

“The Buhari administration reassures all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians of its commitment to the fight against corruption, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the general principles of the Rule of Law.

“Accordingly, this administration will uphold the rule of law in all its actions and the right of citizens would be protected as guaranteed by the Constitution.

“We, therefore, enjoin all Nigerians to cooperate with the law enforcement authorities towards ensuring a successful implementation of the Executive Order 6 which is a paradigm-changing policy of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption.”

A top government official, who spoke in confidence, said there is no cause for alarm on E06.

The source said: “The ban is not different from the conditions given by the court in granting these accused persons bail. The E06 is like a codification of steps to prevent those on trial for alleged corrupt practices from tampering with assets.

“Some of these accused persons used to go to court for permission before they can travel out of the country. The E06 is not a new thing but instead of all agencies working at cross-purposes, a list was generated and backed with the Executive Order.

“Some of those on trial, especially the Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) had been selling their assets. What will they return after being convicted?”

PDP rejects travel ban, says it’s prelude to full-blown fascism

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejected the travel ban outright, dismissing it as an attempt by the Buhari administration to foist full-blown fascism on the country.

Spokesman for  the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the travel restriction was illegal, draconian and targeted at members of opposition parties, perceived political enemies of President Muhammadu Buhari, well-meaning Nigerians, including members of the business community, religious leaders, former political leaders and traditional rulers, who are perceived to be averse to the President’s re-election bid.

He said: “We hope this is not a ploy to harm certain eminent Nigerians on the claims of resisting travel restrictions.

“The whole world can now see how fascism is fast taking over our democracy and judicial system and how the Buhari administration, by fiat, has directly ordered that citizens be secretly trailed, their movements and financial transactions restricted by government agencies, without recourse to due process of the law.

“While the PDP notes that the Buhari Presidency has gone into panic mode since the popular emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as PDP Presidential candidate and the spontaneous jubilation his emergence has evoked across the country, the party maintains that the resort to total clamp down on the opposition and our supporters will be totally unacceptable.

“What this means is that all Nigerians, particularly, opposition members, members of the business community and religious leaders, have become endangered and stand the risk of state violence under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

“The PDP therefore alerts the international community to hold the Buhari Presidency responsible should any harm befall any opposition leader, key members of the business community and religious leaders across the country as we march towards the 2019 general elections.”

The PDP maintained that no amount of intimidation, harassment and foisting of fascism will deter Nigerians from their determination to rally on its platform to oust the APC from power next year.

    Fani-Kayode too

One of the affected persons, Femi Fani-Kayode, described the ban as “utterly shameful and condemnable”.

He alleged that the ban was targeted at members of the opposition.

The ex-Minister of Aviation said: “The banning of 50 prominent Nigerians who are all members of the opposition from travelling out of the country by Buhari’s Executive Order and the power to confiscate their assets even though they have not been empowered to do so by a court of law or convicted of any offence is utterly shameful and condemnable.

“It is nothing less than a descent into fascism and a violation of the fundamental human rights and civil liberties of the individuals that have been directly affected and the Nigerian people.

“It is also a usurpation of the role of the Judiciary. Buhari is so desperate to remain in power that he has now resorted to attempting to muscle and intimidate the opposition. He forgets that he is not God and that he will soon leave power.

“I condemn his lawless and desperate ways in the strongest terms. Only dictators behave in this way and Buhari has proved to be the most brutal and callous of them all in the history of our nation. I challenge him to do his worse and enjoy the short time that he has left in office. Sadists never last. Soon it will all be over and he will account for his evil ways and brought to justice.”

  • Wike, Atiku, Daniel hail lawmakers’ move

RIVERS State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel have hailed the defection of members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly into the PDP

Democracy is taking shape in Nigeria, says Wike

Wike declared that the mass defections at the National Assembly indicate that democracy  is now taking shape in the country.

The governor said the defections from the APC to the PDP showed the direction  the country is headed in 2019.

He spoke yesterday during the celebration of 40 years of Legal Practice of Onueze Okocha (SAN) by Okpo Club of Nigeria (Association of Ikwerre Lawyers Worldwide) and the Inaugural Okpo Club Awards.

He said: “Democracy is taking shape in Nigeria.  I hope you are aware that  the PDP has taken over the Senate.

“We are like going  to take over at the House of Representatives.”

Wike described the day as a happy day, saying Nigerians must continue to work towards a development-oriented government next year.

    Atiku: ruling party a

    sinking ship

Atiku, who is a frontline presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),  remarked that the move was an indication that the ruling party “is a sinking ship”.

The former vice president, who is a frontline presidential aspirant under the PDP, noted that the decampment from the APC further explains the lack of capacity of the ruling party to hold and manage a political party, and indeed a government.

He called on the new entrants to see their decampment as a call to duty.

“The decision of a significant number of members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to leave the APC and decamp into the PDP clearly indicates that there is hope that the country can be rescued from the misrule of the APC government.

PDP should be congratulated, says Daniel

Daniel, who spoke with reporters in Lagos yesterday, said the season of politics was in the air again.

Asked of his reaction to the defection of members to the party in the National Assembly, he said: “I think you should congratulate us”.

Daniel, who said he was yet to get the full details, however, said the more the merrier for the party, which looked forward to regaining power at the centre in 2019.

The former governor, who is also the Director General of the Abubakar Atiku Campaign Organisation, (AACO) in the PDP, said the former vice president remained well-placed to win the presidential ticket of the party.
