George, Daniel, Adeniran: Who becomes PDP chairman?

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is warming up for an elective convention. Three stalwarts-Chief Olabode George, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Prof. Tunde Adeniran-are in the race for the national chairman. Who succeeds Senator Ahmed Makarfi? Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the contenders.

The National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) slated for December is critical to the future of the opposition party. The decision to hold the national congress was taken at the last non-elective convention in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the botched convention in Port-Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

At the convention, a new national chairman will be elected. Already, three stalwarts are itching to succeed Caretaker Chairman Ahmed Makarfi, whose tenure will expire at the convention. They are former Deputy National Chairman Olabode George, former Ogun State Governor Olugbenga Daniel and former Minister of Education Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

The implication of their ambitions is that the party has zoned the slot to the Southwest, following the zoning of the presidential ticket to the North. A source said the Southeast and Southsouth was asked to concede the slot to the Southwest in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice. No PDP chieftain from the Southwest has served as national chairman of the party since its inception in 1998/99. Two Southeast politicians-Prince Vincent Ogbulafor and Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo-were national chairmen, although their tenures were crisis-ridden. Chief Uche Secondus from the Southsouth served as Acting Chairman.  The party believes that the slot should not return to the region that has recently produced Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as president for six years.

However, Southsouth PDP members are still at liberty to join the race in defiance of zoning, reminiscent of when Chief Raymond Dokpesi entered the race, ahead of the rancorous Port-Harcourt convention.

Sources said former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje may not vie for the position, following the re-alignment of forces. In the Southwest, zoning within zoning, between Lagos/Ogun/Oyo and Ondo/Osun/Ekiti may have also been jettisoned. George is from Lagos, Daniel is from Ogun and Adeniran is from Ekiti.

Recently, former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was being drafted into the race by few governors, rejected the entreaties, saying that he could not slug it out with George. It is not clear, if the governors have now shifted to Daniel. But, the three aspirants are not likely to do the bidding of either the PDP Governors’ Forum or any powerful bloc in the party. The three contenders are individually independent-minded.

    Challenges

Many challenges will confront the PDP under the leadership that will be elected in December. The first is the challenge of reconciliation and harmonization. Already, Makarfi and prominent party leaders are on tour of the six geo-political zones to appeal to lukewarm founding fathers who were edged out in the past to return to the fold. The onus is on the post-National Caretaker Committee-chairman to complete the task.

The second is the challenge of fielding a nationally acceptable presidential candidate who will match President Muhammadu Buhari or a flag bearer that will replace him, if he decides not to contest. Already, eyes are on Makarfi, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwabo, Turakin Adamawa former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is likely to retrace his steps from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP, and Gen. Aliyu Gusau. Those interested in being running mate are Senator Ben Obi, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayodele Fayose. These presidential aspirants are interested in who becomes the national chairman.

The PDP has an agenda. The party wants to bounce back in 2019. It is a big challenge. The third challenge, therefore, is that of repackaging the leading opposition party for the presidential contest. The next national chairman is expected to lead the party to victory.

A source disclosed that the three aspirants have swung into action, although more contenders are still likely to join the race.

    George:

The retired navy commodore joined the party at its inception. Since then, he has not looked back. For 10 years, he worked at the party secretariat as Vice Chairman (Southwest), National Deputy Chairman and Director-General of Presidential Campaigns. George has experience. He is mature, courageous and hardworking. He is a former military of Ondo State. He studied Engineering at the University of Lagos, Akoka. He also holds a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration. George was an ally of the first PDP president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Despite the crisis that has rocked the PDP, George has never considered the option of defection. In Lagos, he is the party leader, who has contributed to the chapter’s efforts to capture power, but without success. During the crisis, he convened many reconciliation meetings in the Southwest and was always preaching harmonization, unity and stability. He has served on many critical party committees set up to move the platform forward in the last 17 years. Apart from being endorsed by many important party leaders in the Southwest, his strength also lays in the support of many Northern delegates for his chairmanship ambition. When some governors were projecting Agbaje to the Northern Caucus, old party members insisted on George’s candidature.

Many founding fathers of the party recalled that in 2003, George worked assiduously for the victory of the party in the Southwest where it won five of the six states. They believe that he is conversant with the problems confronting the party and how to mobilise stakeholders to resolve them.

George has a vision for the PDP. In a previous interview, he said the party should strengthen its crisis resolution mechanism to nip in the bud the division and factionalisation that often tore apart the platform. He also said the party should devise a way of funding the party through financial contributions by card-carrying members, admirers and followers, instead of relying exclusively on certain blocs for funding.

George’s associates have set up a campaign organisation. They are holding consultations with party leaders across the six geo-political zones. George is a household name in the PDP. However, Fayose and Wike had objected to his candidature, saying that a younger person would be preferred. A party elder, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, however, disagreed with them, saying that George will be a good chairman. “PDP will regain its voice with Bode George as national chairman,” the former Minister of Transport and Aviation said, adding that he tested, trusted, proven and responsible. Extolling his qualities, Babatope said his contribution to the Ile-Ife/Modakeke peace efforts made the Ooni of Ife, the late Oba Okunade Sijuwade to confer on him the title of Atona Oodua.

“This is not the time for trial and error. This is not the time for crude, illogical experimentation. We dare not fail. We dare not falter. We dare not make a wrong move. Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George is the right choice for our party now at this challenging time,” he stressed.

George is a loyal and committed stalwart. As a party elder, he is consistent and predictable. He has spearheaded efforts to woo credible Lagosians into the Lagos chapter. However, many expect George to work harder to put his house in order. He has the time and skill to unite the party in Lagos and guide its congress to produce a state executive committee that will foster cohesion and cement the unity.

    Daniel:

Daniel’s name has been associated with the PDP in Ogun State since 2003 when he won the governorship election. He served as governor for eight years. However, his administration was full of tension when his tenure was about to expire. Having fallen out with Obasanjo, the party machinery slipped away from his control. In that frustrating situation, a succession crisis engulfed his administration. Although his anointed candidate was Gboyega Nosiru, former President Obasanjo preferred Gen. Idowu Olurin. The former governor directed his followers to encamp in the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN). He could not hand over to his preferred choice. At that time, it was evident that Daniel had left the PDP.

However, after the 2011 elections, prominent party leaders pleaded with him to return to the fold. When he returned, his bid for the Senate was scuttled by Senator Buruji Kashamu, ahead of the primary. He opted out of the race. But, whether as a politician or a businessman, Daniel has not been off the radar. Daniel is a successful businessman. Those supporting his bid have not publicly endorsed him. The PDP chapter in his native Ogun State is still a divided house. Three factions are locked in battle for the control of the chapter. There is no valid state executive committee on ground.

    Adeniran:

A scholar of repute, Adeniran is an eminent professor of Political Science. He retired from the University of Ibadan. He was a prominent union leader as a university teacher. Adeniran was a member of the Political Bureau. He was a MAMSER Executive Director. In 1999, he lost to Otunba Niyi Adebayo during the governorship election. He was Minister of Education for almost two years. Adeniran also serves as Ambassador to Germany. At a time, he was directed by the party to surrender his senatorial ticket to a defector. He complied without complaint. His diplomatic career was aborted in United States.

It is possible that Adeniran has the support of few radical elements in the PDP. But, he does not have home support as Fayose and those in his camp in Ekiti are not supporting his bid.

  • Obi, Daniel felicitate with Muslims

    Obi, Daniel felicitate with Muslims

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and ex-Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel have felicitated with Muslims as they celebrate the 2017  Eid-el-Fitri festival.

Obi reminded them  about the  spiritual message which this solemn feast signifies for the entire human society.

He said: “The successful conclusion of the Ramadan fast, upon which the Eid-el-Fitri festivity rests, is an apt reminder that human society must be imbued with those values that lead to, and reflect the brilliance of God.”

Obi, who said the celebration underscored love, friendship, brotherliness, charity and generosity, among other values, reminded Muslims of the virtues of harmonious co-existence in a diverse society like Nigeria.

His words: “Greatness will come to nations that consciously plan and work for it through consensus and confidence building measures.”

Daniel, in a goodwill message signed by his Media Officer, Ayo Giwa, said: “Muslims should be guided by the spirit of the period of total abstinence, keeping away from vices in all ramifications and imbibing the teachings and pious lifestyles of the Holy Prophet Muhammad”.

The former governor urged Muslim faithful to uphold the lessons of the holy month by avoiding sinful acts that were abhorred and not allow them to become part of their lives after Ramadan.

The celebration of Eid-el-Fitri, he stated, goes beyond merry-making but rather, a period of total submission to the will of Allah as demonstrated during the fasting period.”

  • Kalu, Daniel eulogise Asiwaju

    Kalu, Daniel eulogise Asiwaju

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu and former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel yesterday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a colossus whose name will remain evergreen in the annals of Nigeria.

Acknowledging the role played by the frontline politician in the social, economic and political development of the country, Kalu said: “Tinubu is a bridge-builder, a statesman and an outstanding philanthropist.”

In a birthday message to the APC chieftain, the ex-Abia State governor extolled the virtues of Tinubu, stressing that the latter is the father of modern Lagos, owing to his performance as governor from 1999 to 2007.

He said: “I join other Nigerians in celebrating Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State Governor, as he clocks 65.

“Having followed your antecedents and accomplishments in life, especially in the political space, there is no doubt that Asiwaju Tinubu’s goodwill will continue to expand beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“The roles you played in the fight against the annulment of June 12 presidential election and the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria through National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group, are commendable and worthy of emulation.

“You have continually sustained your relationship with the masses and as such you remain a formidable force to reckon with in politics.

“In view of your ideology and exemplary leadership qualities, you are one of the very few selfless and well-meaning Nigerians.”

Daniel, in his statement, described Tinubu as an indomitable spirit of great mind, insightful opinion, strong heart and exemplary will.

He said Tinubu’s hard work, dynamism and “out-of-the-box” thinking have received wide appreciation both at home and abroad.

  • George, Ogunlewe, Daniel: Southwest should produce PDP chairman

George, Ogunlewe, Daniel: Southwest should produce PDP chairman

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated yesterday as prominent Southwest leaders reiterated their opposition to the zoning of the chairmenship slot to the North.

The PDP elders, including former National Deputy Chairman Chief Bode George, former Works Minister Senator Seye Ogunlewe, Board of Trustees (BoT) member Senator Bode Olajumoke, former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Oloye Jumoke Akinjide and former House of Representatives Majority Leader Hon. Mulikat Adeola-Akande, said crisis  may hit the party if the zoning arrangement is not reversed.

At the meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum held two days ago, the governors insisted that the chairman should come from the North, despite pleadings by its Chairman, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State. According to sources, it was resolved at the meeting in Abuja that the PDP, which has already zoned the presidency to the North,  could only consider the bid of the Southwest for the position next year, ahead of the 2019 elections.

The zoning formula, added the sources, enjoys the support of Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, Senator Buruji Kashamu, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, and five of the six state chairmen in the Southwest.

However, objecting to the move, other Southwest leaders, who held a summit at the Goldengate Restaurant, Ikoyi, Lagos maintained that Yoruba will no longer play the second fiddle in the PDP.

At the PDP Elders Summit were former former Sports and Special Duties Minister Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Ogun State former Governor Gbenga Daniel, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Osun State Deputy Governor Olusola Obada, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, former presidential spokesman Dr. Doyin Okupe, Senator Adefemi Kila, Lagos PDP Chairman Capt. Tunji Shelle, Ambassador Dare Bejide, Senator Segun Bamigbetan, Senator Ogunwale, Alhaji Hafiz Gbolarunmi, Chief Ladosu Ladipo and Chief Joju Fadairo from Ogun State.

Others are former Lagos PDP Women Leader Mrs. Onikepo Oshodi, former Minister of State for Agriculture Chief Remi Awotorebo, former Minister of Regional Integration Dr. Bimbo Ogunkelu, former Acting national Secretary Dr. Remi Akitoye, Prince Nekan Olateru-Olagbegi, Chief Jide Adeniji, Chief Soboyeje, Jelili Amusan, Mrs. Kikelomo Olugbemi, Mrs. Kudirat Obayan, and Hon. Tajudeen Agoro.

George, the convener of the meeting, chided Southwest chieftains who are supporting zoning to the North, saying that they are traitors who cannot defend the integrity and interest of the Southwest.

Reiterating his opposition to the zoning arrangement, the former National Deputy Chairman said: “We will never accept a situation where Yoruba are shoved aside.”

He said Southwest leaders who stormed the PDP National Secretariat to compromise the Yoruba interest by opposing zoning to the Southwest were dishonourable elements.

George said the Acting Chairman, Senator Modu Sheriff should vacate office after the convention, adding that “the midwife cannot transform into the new born baby.”

Urging Yoruba to assert themselves in the PDP, he said: “The die is cast.”

Babatope, who welcomed the delegates from the six states to the summit, lamented that some party members went to Abuja to compromise the interest of the region by canvassing positions that were irreconcilable with Yoruba interest.

He added: “We will not allow ragamuffins to tamper with Yoruba interest in the PDP and Nigeria.”

Olajumoke lamented the discordant tunes in the PDP over zoning, saying that Yoruba should have taken a common position.

He said the PDP is disturbing itself at a time Nigerians are warming up to it as an alternative to the APC government.

The BoT member added: “There are discordant tunes in the PDP and the BoT. Southwest PDP owe it a duty to the entire zones to give leadership. Prof. Tunde Adeniran was saying that we are not even playing the second or third fiddle again; that we are not playing any fiddle, not to talk of a second fiddle.”

Okupe said since the PDP was formed in 1998, no Yoruba has served as its national chairman, adding that it is a disgrace. He said those opposing zoning to get the Southwest are not only bastards, they are not honourable Yoruba people.

  • Atiku, Ladoja, Kalu, Daniel advise adherents to be good

Atiku, Ladoja, Kalu, Daniel advise adherents to be good

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Abia State Governor Orji Kalu, Accord Party National Leader and former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja yesterday led other eminent personalities in urging Muslims to embrace the virtues of forgiveness and understanding as they celebrate the end of Ramadan fasting.

Atiku, in a statement by his media office, said: “One of the basic components of Ramadan fasting is to seek the mercy of God to forgive us our sins, and thus it becomes imperative for us as humans to extend the grace of forgiveness and common understanding to other human beings as well.

“Being good Muslims requires that we follow the examples of Prophet Muhammed, who was always quick to forgive those that transgressed against him and lived a life of building common understanding among people.”

The statement added that at a time such as now when Nigeria is at the threshold of a new beginning, it was important that all hands be “on deck and old gaps are closed to support the new political leadership”.

The Turaki Adamawa while congratulating every Muslim for the successful completion of the Ramadan fasting season noted that it was a season of abundant grace from God almighty for the forgiveness of our sins.

Ladoja called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take special interest in the plight of Internally Displaced Persons due to Boko Haram attacks.

He said if they were not properly catered for, they would become more vulnerable to exploitation and the youth among them might be recruited by terrorists.

Ladoja, in his message, also urged the Federal Government to ensure that victims in camps were properly catered for so as not to become willing pawn to terrorists.

Asking Nigerians to continue to exercise restraint in accordance with the teachings of the Ramadan fasting, Ladoja said the “main lesson of Ramadan to Nigerians is that when people are committed to change, change is possible”.

“If it is possible for people to restrain themselves from sinful ways during the Ramadan month, it shows commitment and that has implication on our attitude to change. If people are committed to change, they will change their bad ways. I urge Nigerians to shun bad behaviours, sins and other vices that may hamper growth and development”

Kalu congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of the compulsory 30-day Ramadan fasting.

The former governor, in a goodwill message by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, said: “I wish to join our Muslim brothers and sisters in celebrating this year’s Eid al -Fitr.

“Despite the completion of Ramadan fast, the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians alike need to sustain the virtues of the holy month by maintaining the love, togetherness and peaceful co-existence that characterised of the holy month.

“The discipline and self-restraint as exemplified during the holy month is the only way to live a good life and make the society a better place to live.”

The immediate past Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel urged the adherents of the faith to keep up with the virtues gained during the Ramadan period which included piety, patience, tolerance, perseverance, humility, self denial and service to humanity.

Daniel urged Muslims to embrace the spirit of love, forgiveness and brotherhood preached by Islam and other religions.

Congratulating the faithful on the successful observation of the Holy month, he implored the people to celebrate with moderation and in the spirit of Ramadan which encouraged peace and charity.

  • Ogun 2015: Jonathan, Fayose unite Daniel, Kashamu

Ogun 2015: Jonathan, Fayose unite Daniel, Kashamu

The almost five-year rift between former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel and Prince Buruji Kashamu, the Chairman, Mobilising Committee of the South West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been finally resolved.

The national leader of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan and the Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, brokered the truce some days ago; a development sources in the party said was quite timely, with the April 11 governorship election just about four weeks away. The first leg of the peace meetings, which was held in Lagos at the instance of Fayose, commenced Saturday evening at about 9:30pm till about 5am penultimate Sunday.

The delegation later moved to the State House in Marina, Lagos, to brief the president on the decision reached. Members of the delegation include Fayose, Daniel; PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka; former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe; Chairman, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Jide Adeniji; Ogun State PDP Chairman, Engr. Adebayo Dayo and Kashamu. At the parley, the president expressed delight at the rapprochement and reportedly urged them to work together in the interest of the party.

Following the resolution, sources say Daniel will now lead the party’s campaigns in the state ahead the 2015 general elections. Speaking on the development, Kashamu blushed, “I am the happiest person today. I am delighted that I and my leader and brother, His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, have resolved our differences. As a two-term governor of our dear state, His Excellency remains our leader and by God’s grace, he will lead us to victory in the coming elections.” Now the big poser:

Does the Ogun PDP have what it takes to dislodge Governor Ibikunle Amosun next month?  Ripples’ take: only time would tell.

  • Daniel dumps Crown FC

    Daniel dumps Crown FC

Crown FC striker, Bode Daniel, has said he has played his last game for the demoted side in match day 38 clash against Akwa United in the 2013/14 Glo Premier League season.

The Ogbomosho-based side were demoted to the second tier league, Nigeria National League (NNL)  with Gombe United, Kaduna United and Nembe City.

Daniel said several approaches have been made prior to the end of the season and after by some top-flight sides but he is not in a hurry to agree to terms with any side for the upcoming season. “I must confess to you that my body and mind are no more with Crown FC. I’m certain I’ve played my last game for the side against Akwa United in the 2013/14 league season.

“I’m resting right now with my family but when I decide on my future definitely Crown FC won’t be mentioned. It has nothing to do with the side’s demotion to the lower league but a desire for a change of environment.

“I’m certainly looking elsewhere for greener pastures in the new season, clubs actually approached me while the season was on and as I speak with you there have been renewed interest in me by some teams but nothing has been agreed.

“I want to take my time and study each proposal carefully before I’ll commit myself, I don’t want to make any mistake. Though I’m open to discussions with any team that wants my service but I’ll like to settle down ultimately with a top flight side,” said Daniel to supersport.com.

The Ogbomosho-based side’s top striker scored seven goals in the league as well as four goals in the 2014 Federation Cup.

  • Contempt charge filed against Bankole, Daniel

Contempt charge filed against Bankole, Daniel

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) executives in Ogun State have initiated contempt proceedings at the Federal High Court in Lagos against former House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole and former Governor Gbenga Daniel for allegedly disobeying a court order.

The court yesterday granted leave to the applicants to serve the charge on the alleged contemnors, which include a former House of Representatives member Dave Salako.

The plaintiffs, Adebayo Dayo and Semiu Sodipo, alleged that the respondents had been attempting to remove them from office, despite two Federal High Court judgments affirming the executives’ legality.

They said just as Ondo State PDP executive was dissolved, the respondents were making moves to dissolve the Ogun executive, with the alleged aim of installing their loyalists.

They alleged that because of Bankole’s political ambition, he was not comfortable with the present PDP executive in the state, and had been attempting to get them sacked by PDP’s National Integration Committee.

The applicants said the respondents perceive them as working against their political interest.

Justice Okon Abang, who granted the leave following the plaintiffs’ ex-parte application, ordered that the notice of committal and accompanying processes be served on the alleged contemnors in Abuja and Ogun State.

The judge also said the court documents could be pasted in a conspicuous part of Ogun PDP secretariat, while Daniel should be served through Crystal Laurel, his office in Maryland, Lagos.

He said it would be in the interest of justice for the alleged contemnors to be served through substituted means and ordered that status quo be maintained, adding that the planned removal of the Dayo-led executive should be put on hold until the suit is heard and determined.

The judge warned that he would reverse any steps that may be taken before the determination of the committal proceedings, adding that status quo must be maintained. “He who has ears should heed the directive,” the judge said.

Justice Abang, however, did not grant an interim injunction seeking to restrain the National Integration Committee of the PDP from dissolving the Ogun State Executive Committee.

The judge also declined to grant interim injunction restraining the alleged contemnors from conducting themselves in such manner that is designed to disrupt the structure of the Ogun PDP as presently constituted.

He also refused to restrain the respondents from participating in any activities of the PDP in Ogun State including meetings, congresses and or primaries except as organised by the Dayo-led executive.

According to the judge, the justice of the matter requires that the respondents should be allowed to present their side of the issue before a decision is taken.

    He adjourned till November 5.

  • Mu’azu, Mark, Daniel beg Obasanjo to return to PDP

Mu’azu, Mark, Daniel beg Obasanjo to return to PDP

THE National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, President of the Senate David Mark and former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel have pleaded with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo for forgiveness.

The party leader asked Obasanjo for forgiveness at a reception help at the national secretariat of the PDP to receive Daniel and his supporters back into the party.

Obasanjo had, a few months ago, announced his withdrawal from party activities, as a result of what he considered insults directed at him by the its leadership.

The party had given recognition to Chief Buruji Kashamu as leader of the PDP in the Southwest, to the chagrin of Obasanjo and his loyalists.

Remorseful of the disdain with which the PDP had treated the former president, the trio pleaded with Obasanjo to allow the matter to rest.

Mu’azu said: “Baba should please forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. We are your children; we made mistakes. Please, forgive us and come and lead us to victory in the 2015 elections. Baba should not throw away the baby with the bath water”.

Mark also said: “In any disagreement of this nature, the older person is always right. All of us in the PDP are appealing to you to come back to the party.”

Daniel, who was the first to tender his apology to Obasanjo, said the former president should not be seen abandoning the house he built, adding that in a quarrel between a father and son, there was no way the son could claim to be right.

Daniel, who made a re-entry into the PDP, said Mark persuaded him to return to the fold.

Mu’azu assured Daniel and his supporters that the party would provide equal platform for everyone to realise their aspirations.

He added that the returnees would be granted waiver on request, adding however that this would not necessarily translate to automatic tickets for the beneficiaries to contest elections.

The chairman said the party would be guided by equity, fairness and justice in its dealings with the returnees and existing members alike.

Others party chieftains at the event included the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko; Chief Olabode George; Senator Kola Bajomo; Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro and the Police Affairs Minister Jelili Adesiyan and others.

  • Daniel’s greed stalled Olokola project, says Amosun

Daniel’s greed stalled Olokola project, says Amosun

Verbal missiles continue to fly between Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his predecessor, Gbenga Daniel, as Amosun accused the ex-governor of   fraud in the multi-billion dollar Olokola Free Trade Zone (OFTZ).

The governor, who spoke in Abigi, Ogun Waterside Local Government, said Daniel’s “selfishness and greedy” agenda in the OFTZ from inception stalled the project.

Amosun was responding to a question from one of the traditional rulers in the host communities of the Free Trade Zone, the Elefire of Ifire, Oba Michael Adeniyi.

According to him, investors pulled out, following the insincerity and faulty share holding structure laid down by the Daniel administration, which gave foreign investors  51 per cent and 10 per cent each for Ogun and Ondo states.

At conception about a decade ago, it was expected to host multi-billion dollar investments, which included the Liquefied Natural Gas Company (LNG), the Deep Sea Port as well as the petroleum refinery proposed by the Dangote Group and the four major oil companies in Nigeria indicated interest in the project.

A few weeks ago, Daniel accused his successor of frustrating the take-off of the project he claimed would include the $10 billion refinery.

But Amosun said the Daniel administration was yet to tell Ogun people what happened to the 29 per cent share of the project.

The governor said the previous administration could not account for the $10 million said to have been collected from Dangote Group of Companies.

Amosun said: “I don’t want to talk about Olokola but now that you’ve asked in public, we must talk about it because some people are deceiving the people and that is why I will explain a bit because there are moments when the truth must be said.

“I am happy you said the project had been on for about 12 years ago and we have just spent three years, there’s no way what we have done within this period could have stalled Olokola and that is why I said some things are better not said.

“It was selfishness and greed that stalled Olokola since inception. When it started, the foreign investors took 51 per cent shareholding structure because they own the resources; the remaining 49 per cent was what caused the problem.

“Ten per cent each was given to Ogun and Ondo states but the remaining 29 per cent was shared among them.

“This is when the investors became suspicious, they requested for the fund but it was not paid.

“As we were dealing with this, Alhaji Aliko Dangote went to London and bought the 51 per cent and also requested for our own share but I insisted we are not selling.”

But Daniel urged Amosun to tell the public what he has done in the last three and half years to rectify whatever wrongs he observed in the sale of the OFTZ.

The ex – governor  in a statement by his media aide, Ayo Giwa, said: “One would think the people should ask him, what has he done to rectify such double sales? The governor has only betrayed his level of intelligence.

“ if he is just returning a verdict of double sales at close to four years and almost at the end of his administration, he should accept our sympathy.”
