  • Emir of Daura charges NIPSS participants to promote national unity

    The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk, on Friday enjoined participants of Course 40 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to shun divisive tendencies that would further polarise Nigeria.

    Farouk gave the charge when the course participants, who were on local study tour of Daura and its environs, paid him a homage.

    The emir described the institute as the melting pot of intellectualism and strategy where excellent and beneficial policy issues were worked out for the socio-economic benefits of the nation.

    He called on the participants to strive at putting national interests above every other consideration for the social, political and economic development of the nation.

    He said that the role of the institute in the promotion of peace and stability was important, adding that “we have for long been playing host to the participants of this great citadel of learning”.

    The monarch described tribalism, sectionalism and religious bigotry as the fault lines impeding Nigeria’s unity and urged participants that they must endeavour to “implement all that you learnt to tackle the problems facing the country.”

    He said the Federal Government would need the intellect, knowledge, experience and the wisdom of the products of the institute in dealing with the security problems facing some parts of the country.

    He described President Muhammadu Buhari as “a man of peace “who always wants the best for Nigeria right from his days in the military up-to the present time.”

    “ I urge you to shun greed and licentious lifestyle as we would all go back to God and account for our deeds.

    “We should focus on issues that would unite us than those that would divide us ” he said.

    The emir also urged the Federal Government to give the institute adequate funding and logistical supports that will enable it to continue to thrive.

    “Kuru is not for everybody, but only those who made marks in their choose career,” he stressed.

    Earlier, the Acting Director-General of the institute and leader of the team, Mr Jonathan Juma, Mni, said the participants were at the palace to seek for royal blessings and wisdom from the legendary Dunama Palace.

    He said the tour was aimed at interacting with traditional, religious and community leaders on how to strengthen community policing as well as fashion out modalities on how to achieve lasting peace and stability.

    Juma said that after the tour, the participants were expected to report back to Mr President about their findings and recommendations on strategy and policy development.

    Highlights of the tour were visit to the historical sites of the Daura Emirate like the Kusugu well and other places

  • Buhari visits Daura, condoles with late senator’s family

    President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday visited the Daura,Katsina State residence of the  late Sen. Mustafah Bukar to commiserate with the family of the deceased.

    Bukar died  on Wednesday in Abuja following a brief illness.

    The late Senator represented Katsina North Senatorial District .

    Buhari, who arrived at the residence of the late senator as 6:00 pm said the deceased was his very close ally “in difficulties and in joy.”

    “His death has deeply touched me personally and officially,” the President said, adding that Nigeria would miss the wisdom and political sagacity of Bukar.

    Buhari prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and urged the family to bear the irreplaceable loss.

    He described Bukar as humble, honest hardworking and God fearing personality who placed national interest above all other considerations.

    “He played politics with decency, decorum and understanding; his death is a personal loss to me and the nation in general.”

    Responding, Abdullahi Bukar, elder brother to the deceased, thanked the president and said the family was very appreciative of the visit.

    NAN reports that the President was in company of the Governor Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari.

    Buhari is expected to depart Daura on Monday.

    Daura youth groups visit Buhari

    Forty-six associations, under the aegis of the Daura Emirate Coalition of Progressive Youths, on Tuesday visited President Muhammadu Buhari in his Daura residence and pledged to fully  support his fight against corruption.

    The youth groups also expressed their unconditional support for the President’s efforts to transform Nigeria into a nation its nationals would be proud to serve, promote and protect.

    Alhaji Ali Rabe, their chairman, who spoke at the visit, told Buhari that the coalition was already sensitizing Nigerians on the impact of his administration’s efforts and the need to support them.

    “The policies of your administration have transformed the lives of many Nigerians, especially the rural dwellers. We are sensitising them to take advantage of the opportunities in the agriculture sector to improve their economic fortunes,” he said.

    Rabe urged Buhari to seek a fresh mandate in 2019 so as to consolidate on the gains so far recorded.

    The group blamed the rising cases of insurgencies and crimes in some parts of  the country on people bent on distracting the President from fighting crime and insecurity, and advised him to remain focused.

    “When you fight corruption, corruption will fight back; when you fight insecurity, it will also fight back. But we want the Federal Government to remain focused and be assured that all Nigerians of good will are behind them,” he said.

    The coalition also commended Buhari’s efforts toward infrastructural development, especially roads, electricity, agriculture and the railways, and urged him to sustain the tempo.

    It said that the N-power programme had created job opportunities for many young Nigerians and reduced redundancy and idleness.

    Responding, Buhari vowed to intensify the fight against corruption, describing it as “a cancer that kills the spirit of a nation and retards its progress”.

    “I have always said and would say it again. Corruption is responsible for the myriad of problems Nigeria is facing today. We have to either kill it, or it will kill us,” he said.

    The President advised members of the group to remain honest, transparent and God-fearing in their activities.

    Buhari: All recovered assets to be sold-off

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Daura, his hometown, said all mismanaged and misappropriated national assets recovered will be sold off and proceeds paid to the treasury for the benefit of the country.

    Buhari who gave the assurance when he received representatives of social groups in Daura Emirate said his administration will continue to pursue a robust, effective and legitimate anti-corruption campaign that safeguards the treasury and commonwealth of all Nigerians.

    The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said he would not allow a repeat of what happened in the 1980s when buildings and other ill-gotten property seized by his military administration were returned to corrupt officials following his ouster as Head of State.

    The President told the groups that the APC-led government will consolidate on the gains and monumental achievements in the development of infrastructure across the country.

    He said “For most ordinary Nigerians, if you give them good roads, railway and stable electric power they will be happy to carry on with their lives.

    ‘‘We are doing so much for our country and we will continue to do more out of the fear of God,” the President said.

    On agriculture development, the President promised that the Federal Government will sustain the provision of funds, improved seedlings and fertilizer to farmers to ensure that the sector remains the largest employer of labour to Nigerians.

    On the key priorities of the administration, the President maintained that the records of achievements on security, war against corruption and the revival of the economy have remained very impressive.

    He expressed delight that more young people are venturing into agribusiness while security, especially in the northeast, had remarkably changed from what he met in 2015.

    Alhaji Mohammed Saleh, the spokesman of the delegations, commended President Buhari for implementing policies and programmes that have created gainful employment to thousands of young Nigerians under the Social Investment Programme.

    Saleh said improved electricity supply in their communities and growing foreign reserves are clear indications of good management of the economy under the present administration.

    The delegations also congratulated the President on his appointment as the continental Champion against corruption by the African Union, noting that it underscored the global appreciation of the good work he is doing in fighting corruption.

    They also commiserated with the President on the recent loss of his close family members.

    The groups represented at the meeting were the Daura Emirate Coalition of Associations; the Amalgamation of Daura Emirate Political Associations; the Buhari Group; the Daura Emirate Development Forum; Women in Politics in Daura Emirate and the Daura Emirate Consultative Forum.

    Sen. Bukar trains 400 youths on yoghurt making, poultry production

    Sen. Mustafah Bukar ( APC-Katsina North ), has commenced the training of 400 unemployed youths in his Senatorial District on yoghourt making and poultry production for self reliance and economic sustainability.

    Malam Safiyanu Daifa, his Media Secretary, said at the launching of the exercise in Daura on Monday that it would last for 30 days Daifa said that the resource persons were drawn from the  National Research Institute for Chemical Technology  ( NARIC ), Zaria.

    He said that 33 trainees were registered from each of 12 local government areas in the Senatorial District with Daura getting 37 being the Zonal Headquarters.

    He called on the trainees to make good use of the opportunity to enable them to reap the lofty objectives of the training.

    “We would after the training provide them with seed capital to enable them to set up their own businesses,” he said.

    The media secretary said Sen. Bukar was determined to make the zone economically viable and independent through innovative projects that would have direct impact on the people.

    According to him, the lawmaker is also determined to completely eradicate indolence, idleness and political thuggery in the area.

    One of the beneficiaries, Zainab Ahmad, from Ingawa Local Government Area, lauded the efforts of the lawmaker for his youth empowerment projects.

    She said Sen. Bukar had made many of them productive and self reliant.

    Tomato farmers cry over poor market in Katsina

    The Kanya Hote Tomato Growers Association in Daura, Katsina State, has urged the state government to provide stable market for tomatoes.

    Malam Bako Langa, the Chairman of the association made the call when the Reporter visited his farm on Tuesday.

    According to him, the absence of regular and stable market for the product is affecting the fortunes of members of the association who have cultivated the commodity in abundance.

    Langa said members of the association alone have cultivated about 1,000 hectare of tomatoes in the current dry season farming.

    He noted with the price of tomatoes at between N400 and N500, “it is doubtful if we could recoup what we invested in the production and processing of the commodity.”

    According to him, although a tomato processing industry in Katsina is buying the commodity at between N700 and N800 per basket, a farmer require at least N500 per basket to cover the cost of harvesting, packaging and transport.

    He therefore urged the state government to situate a market in the area where factory owners can buy off the commodity from farmers.

    A farmer, Alhaji Sani Zimbo, said tomato growers would continue to record consequential losses if the situation was not addressed.

    “I cultivated four hectares of two tomato variety called Chipli and UTC and harvest  300 baskets weekly, but the our problem is that of getting market value for our efforts.”

    He advised the state government to come up with an emergency intervention method to assist the farmers and encourage further production of tomato.

    Malam Salisu Salisu, the Irrigation Officer, Daura Local Government noted that the drastic fall in the price of tomato should elicit concern by government.

    Salisu described the situation as “distressful” with farmers at the receiving end.

    When contacted, Dr Abba Abdullahi, Special Adviser to Gov. Aminu Masari on Agriculture, advised the farmers to liaise with his office with a view to addressing the problem.

    He said the state government was doing its best to attract investors to set up tomato processing plants across the state.

    Abdullahi said already, a Spanish firm was in the process of establishing a tomato processing industry in Funtua, to provide stable market for the product in the area.

    “We have invited investors from Spain and aerial survey of where the factory would be located had been completed,” he said.

    Centre trains 180 youths on vocational skills in Katsina

    The Katsina State Government-owned Community Skills Development Centre ( COSDEC ), Daura, has started training 180 unemployed youths in vocational skills  to empower them to be self-reliant.

    The Principal of the centre, Alhaji Abdullahi Ingawa,  made this known in an interview in Daura on Tuesday.

    He said that the training would be in six key vocational skills, including building and masonry, welding and fabrication, fashion and design, and hospitality and hotel management.

    According to Ingawa, the other skills are electrical installation and information and communication technology.

    Ingawa said that 30 persons had registered for each skill for the one year training.

    He gave the assurance that the trainees would be given a seed capital after the skill acquisition being conducted by the state government in collaboration with a Britain-based group, UKaid.

    According to the principal, the state government provided the structure, staffers and allowances of the trainees, while UKaid supported with tools.

    Ingawa said that the centre also provided accommodation for 20 students on industrial attachment in the centre.

    He said that the centre recently started training 25 students in the production of efficient cooking stoves.

    The principal said the training was collaboration between the International Centre for Energy and Environmental Development, European Union ( EU ) Oxfam, Iceed and the National Planning Commission.

    Ingawa appealed to the state government to provide functional vehicles for the centre as well as make permanent and pensionable, 14 resource persons on part-time appointment in the centre.

    He lauded the state government and the Daura Local Council for support for the centre.

    The principal specifically hailed Mr Abubakar Maaruf-Mashi, the council’s Director of Education and Social Welfare Development, for attracting six of the part-time workers.

    Senator distributes 120 water pumping machines in Katsina

    Sen. Mustafa Bukar (APC-Katsina North) has commenced the distribution of 120 water pumping machines across his constituency to promote irrigation farming.

    Malam Safiyanu Daifa, the media secretary to the lawmaker made this known in Daura on Monday while distributing the machines to beneficiaries across the zone.

    He said the senator spent N18 million to construct 120 tube wells as well as provide the water pumping machines to ease the difficulties faced by irrigation farmers in the area.

    The Katsina north senatorial district is comprised of Daura, Sandamu, Baure, Maiadua, Zango, Dutsi, Mashi, Mani, Ingawa, Bindawa, Kankiya and Kusada councils.

    Daifa added that the farmers got both the tube wells and the machines free of charge.

    He said 10 tube wells were drilled in each of the 12 Local Government Areas, adding that ‘’each of the tube well costs us N150,000 together with its accessories’’.

    Daifa said the lawmaker would also concentrate on the provision of improved seedlings and insecticides to the farmers.

    He reiterated Bukar’s determination to empower the people of the area through agriculture, skills acquisition, education and other entrepreneur ventures.

    Malam Sani Daura-Zimbo who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, lauded the efforts of the lawmaker, stressing that they would use the equipment judiciously.

    ‘’We are pleased to associate with Senator Bukar because of his concern for the people of his constituency. Bukar contributes to legislative debates because he comes back to listen to the yearnings and aspirations of the people,’’ he said.

    Last week, the senator began the training of 1,000 unemployed youths on vocational skills across the senatorial district.

    Bukar secures freedom for 60 prisoners

    Sen. Mustafah Bukar ( APC ), representing Katsina North Senatorial District, said he had so far secured the release of 60 prisoners across the prison cells located in Daura, Mani, Ingawa and Kankiya local government areas.

    Bukar disclosed this in an interview in Daura on Tuesday.

    He said the prisoners who benefited from the gesture were those who committed simple and minor offences and serving various jail terms and unable to pay fines and get their freedom.

    “We secured their freedom in 2016 by settling their court fines,” he said.

    He said 15 prisoners were freed in each of the prison cells.

    “The gesture is aimed at extending the dividends of democracy to the beneficiaries as well as ensure they transform to good citizens,” the Lawmaker said.

    He said that his visit to prisons started in 2016 and that he would expand the programme to ensure that inmates who committed lesser offences were freed and trained on vocational skills.

    He said he had constructed an N82 million Skills Acquisition Centre in Daura which would soon be put to use in training unemployed youths in the zone.

    Bukar said the centre would train all interested youths on computer literacy; building; automobile mechanic; tailoring; weaving; knitting; jelly making; leather work and carpentry, adding that entry forms would be made available to  interested candidates.

    He said in his bid to promote sporting activities in the zone, he had built a mini stadium at Shargalle village in Dutse Local Government Area.

    “I am determined to promote recreational activities and reduce idleness among our youths,” he said.

    The Senator also said that his office had distributed 2,000 cooking stoves free  to rural women across the 12 local government areas of the zone.

    Bukar, who is also the Madawakin Daura, commended the Katsina State Government for improving security as well as providing infrastructure to the people.

    Reports say that Sen. Bukar had recently donated 30 units of 500 KVA transformers to improve power supply in the zone.

    The Katsina North Senatorial  District comprises  Daura, Zango, Maiadua, Baure, Sandamu and Dutsi, Mashi, Mani, Kankiya, Ingawa,  Bindawa and Kusada local government areas.

    Senator provides free eye treatment for 15,000 patients

    No fewer than 15,000 people in Katsina North Senatorial Zone with various eye defects, are to benefit from free eye treatment, courtesy of Sen. Mustafa Bukar.

    Bukar made this disclosure on Saturday while flagging off the second phase of the free treatment in Daura, Katsina.

    Bukar said the gesture was part of his constituency outreach, aimed at promoting good health as well as providing democratic dividends for the people of his constituency.

    The senator disclosed that the sum of N20 million had been earmarked for the exercise.

    He said the exercise, which would last for one month across the 12 council areas of the zone, would be handled by the Katsina eye care centre.

    The senator said cases to be treated included, glaucoma, cataract, short sightedness as well as the provision of reading glasses.

    The senator said that the General Hospital in Daura and Mani, would serve as service centres for the operations.

    Bukar also said that his achievements so far included, the employment of no fewer than 830 people as well as the empowerment of 5,000 youths.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the senator organised similar treatment for 7,000 people during the first phase of the programme in 2015.
