Lagos Security: APC Diaspora calls for citizens participation

The Chairman, National Coordinator of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Scandinavia Chapter, Mr. Ayoola Lawal has commended the governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode for being a man of his words by making the security of life and property of the people of Lagos state a top priority of his administration and delivering on his campaign promises.

According to Lawal in a statement, the recent generous gesture of donating security equipment and vehicles to the state police command and the Rapid Response Squad worth millions of dollars deserves a great commendation.

“It is undoubted that Lagos state is now on par with modern cities in the developed world in terms of security equipment.

“The equipment donated include three helicopters, two gun boats, 10 Toyota land cruiser pick-ups, 15 BMW power bikes,100 4-door salon cars, 55 Ford Ranger pick-ups, 100 power bikes, Isuzu trucks,15 armored personnel carriers, revolving lights, siren and public address system, vehicular radio communicators, security gadgets including helmets, handcuffs, bullet proof vests, uniforms, kits and improved insurance and death benefit schemes for officers.

“This is a great development that Nigeria now has a state, which its security operations can be driven by equipment that can match the sophistication of crime in the contemporary time,” the Coordinator observed.

He further noted that now that Lagos state is in par with modern cities in terms of equipment, it is imperative that the people of Lagos state support the government in the fight against insecurity by making use of the security lines and report any suspicious activities and people to the appropriate security authority.

“No state can be investor-friendly without proper and adequate security but special thanks to Governor Akinwumi Ambode for making Lagos state a better haven for investors and tourist,” Lawal maintained.

  • “Nigerians will get the change they voted for”

“Nigerians will get the change they voted for”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has assured Nigerians that the change they voted for is guaranteed, promising better times.

The Minister on Tuesday said that “this Government will not give excuses. The painstaking and methodical approach by the Buhari Administration, its deep analysis and understanding of the challenges and the recent inauguration of the cabinet will herald a new dawn.”

Alhaji Mohammed, who stated this at a meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Abuja on Tuesday, said that in the next few days, the Administration will start firing from all cylinders, starting with the unveiling of the 2016 budget.

“Nigerians will witness measurable and impactful progress in all spheres of governance. We shall not abandon our social intervention policies such as one meal a day for school children and the payment of 5,000 Naira each to vulnerable Nigerians. We are committed to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

On how the Administration will fund its programmes, in view of the drastic fall in the price of crude oil, the Minister said it would be through the diversification of the economy, plugging of leakages as well as exploiting and widening the country’s tax base without necessarily raising taxes.

“A comparative analysis between Nigeria and South Africa will drive the point home. In 2013, with a population of 160 million and GDP of $510 billion, Nigeria collected $30 billion in taxes, whereas South Africa, with a population of 54 million and GDP of $366 billion, collected $74 billion in taxes.

“In 2014, Nigeria, with a population of 170 million and GDP of $535 billion, collected $26 billion, while South Africa, with a GDP of $350 billion and population of 54 million, raked in $70 billion. From the figures, it is obvious that if only we can widen our tax base, we do not need to raise taxes to increase our tax revenue,” he said.

The Minister commended the CSOs for the role they played during the last general elections, saying the organizations, especially those grouped under the Situation Room, contributed hugely to the success of the polls.

He said the Buhari Administration will carry the Civil Society along in its efforts to change, for the better, the country’s fortunes.

“That is why we have started our engagement with you this early. Therefore, this will be the first in a series of engagements with the Civil Society. We see you as credible, and we see you as patriots, who are genuinely interested in the welfare of the people,” the Minister said.

In his speech on behalf of The Situation Room, Mr. Clement Nwankwo urged the Federal Government to tackle growing national issues with the urgency that it deserves.

“Expectations are very high amongst Nigerians for the changes promised by General Buhari during the campaigns. The need to deliver on campaign promises is against the background of the complete lack of public trust in government and its institutions,” he noted.

Mr. Nwankwo listed urgent symbolic steps and quick wins to be urgently implemented by the government as including transparency and openness of recovered loots from officials of the immediate past regime, openness of the national budget, sale of some of the presidential jets, zero tolerance for impunity and the probe of the FCDA land swap.

  • Blackberry quits Pakistan over govt ‘back door’ demand

Blackberry quits Pakistan over govt ‘back door’ demand

BlackBerry has on Monday announced that it would cease operations in Pakistan and exit completely by December 30.

The company came to the conclusion to quit after the Pakistan government asked the Smartphone maker to give it unfettered access to its secure BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) servers.

According to an online report, the Pakistani Telecommunications Authority notified carriers that BES servers won’t be allowed to operate in the country citing security reasons.

However, BlackBerry was of the argument that the Pakistani government’s demands had nothing to do with public safety.

According to Blackberry Chief Operating Officer (COO), Marty Beard wrote in a blog post announcing the company’s decision to exit Pakistan: “The truth is that the Pakistani government wanted the ability to monitor all BlackBerry Enterprise Service traffic in the country, including every BES e-mail and BES BBM [BlackBerry Messenger] message.

“But BlackBerry will not comply with that sort of directive. As we have said many times, we do not support ‘back doors’ granting open access to our customers’ information and have never done this anywhere in the world.”

The original directive had asked carriers to stop BES services by November 30 but the deadline was extended by a month to December 30.

Accordingly, the Canadian telecommunication and wireless equipment company has delayed its exit till the deadline lapses. The move would affect approximately 5,000 companies who are BES customers in Pakistan.

“Pakistan’s demand was not a question of public safety; we are more than happy to assist law enforcement agencies in investigations of criminal activity.

“Rather, Pakistan was essentially demanding unfettered access to all of our BES customers’ information Pakistan was essentially demanding unfettered access to all of our BES customers’ information,” Beard claimed.

While the directive did not include consumer services and BlackBerry phones themselves, the company has decided to cease all its operations and leave the country.

“Although the Pakistani government’s directive was aimed only at our BES servers, we have decided to exit the market altogether, because Pakistan’s demand for open access to monitor a significant swath of our customers’ communications within its borders left us no choice but to exit the country entirely,” Beard explained.

This is not the first time a government has asked BlackBerry for access to its servers for “lawful interception.” India too had made a similar demand for real-time access to traffic going through BlackBerry’s enterprise and consumer servers. The government had made it mandatory for BlackBerry to set up its servers within the country.

After several rounds of negotiations, BlackBerry set up servers in India and reportedly provided the Indian government the ability to track in real-time certain consumer services such as emails and email attachments as well as whether messages sent over BlackBerry Messenger were delivered and read. The enterprise services were kept out of that arrangement.

  • 3D Shapify technology enters Nigeria

    3D Shapify technology enters Nigeria

No doubt that developed economies were transformed as soon as they embraced technology, Africa, though way behind, is set for transformation as more Africa focused technological driven innovations are bathed by Africans in Diaspora. Recently, a Nigerian serial entrepreneur, Israel Ovirih, introduced Africa’s first 3 dimension scanning and printing services, adding a new dimension to selfies in Nigeria. Speaking at the launch of the ‘disruptive technology’, Ovirih described the technology as one that will outshine every other technology availing youths employment through self dependence in Nigeria. 3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM), refers to various processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object. In 3D printing, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry, and are produced from a 3D model or other electronic data source. According to the Nigeria Chairman and Founder, 3D Makery, Ovirih, 3D scanning and printing service is the “ultimate selfie technology” in Nigeria and Africa. It can be for you, your spouse, child, or pet, anything that can be scanned inside the Shapify booth preserve the most memorable moments with the ultimate selfie. The introduction of this service marks the first in Africa and one of the numerous few that are available around the world. Ovirih disclosed to Journalist at the launch in Lagos that the innovation, about 30 years old now, started only 2 years ago for commercial purposes. Referring to initial technological innovations that were introduced to Africa and the aftermath effect, Ovirih said: “This is a very disruptive technology. You can imagine what happened to the post office, the way we buy things and the way we live our lives using Smartphones. “But technology in its self is not just disruptive. The purpose of every technology is to bring abundance to the world, make life easy for everyone and to deliver good life to everyone. “Every technology must pass through six stages. Every business that fails to embrace technology is bound to die, because the younger generations will over run such businesses with new ideas. “3D technology is opening up a whole new world of possibilities and the reward of 3D printing technology is that the scan can be used to produce a full color figurine known as a ‘Shapie’. “So, rather than a half cocked snapshot you can have a 3D printed sculpture to either keep as your own or give as a gift. “The so-called shapies use 3D printing technology and designed to bring joy and happiness each time a person gazes upon the "Mini-Me". “We’re thrilled bringing this advanced 3D tools and knowledgeable support team to help grow Nigeria’s technology business. We have had success and satisfaction with this technology and, upon experiencing the technology ourselves, knew it would be a benefit for Nigerians. We are confident customers will embrace this technology. While it’s still wonderful to have collections of photos, this 3D technology offers a new way to revisit a memory with a 3D portrait.” On the mechanics of the 3D Technology, the Chief Operating Officer, 3D Makery Nigeria, Damola Kolawole explained that the booth where all the magic happens contains four wide-view, high-resolution scanners that rotate around the person inside in order to capture the person or object from all angles. “The level of detail that can be captured by these scanners is such that it will even pick up things like a logo on a shirt or the jersey of your favorite sports team. “The hundreds of images that are generated in this way are then automatically stitched together with special software and a 3D model is generated from that composite. After the digital model is created, the figurine can then be produced,” Kolawole noted. The event, which took place at the popular Ikeja City Mall at Alausa, was strategic as shoppers and passers-by turned out massively with notable faces in Nigeria entertainment industry like former Mr. Nigeria Bryan Okwara, Sound Sultan, Ghanian Actress Juliet Ibrahim and many more having their pictures taken.
