US election: Visualisation of early voting result

The people of the United States of America will on Tuesday night choose their next President to succeed Barack Obama, who made history as the first African-American to emerge President in the U.S.

As Americans go to the polls, the long, unusual and often ugly 2016 presidential campaign has been about the country’s changing demographics and the shifting coalitions of the two major parties as much as about the two main candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Below is a visualisation of the early votes cast thus far, showing the percent cast by a given party:

According to New York Times, in a battle of the belts, it’s Sun vs. Rust.

The changing nature of the presidential map can be deduced from where Mrs. Clinton went on Monday. She was assured enough of her prospects for winning Florida, a state that George W. Bush won twice, to not return to the biggest battleground of them all, but she held her second event in four days in Michigan, a state no Republican has won since 1988.

Mrs. Clinton’s aides express confidence that the results will go their way, in large part because of their optimism about Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Virginia, but they are less bullish about their prospects in Michigan and states like Iowa and Ohio. It is a striking turnabout given how rooted Democrats once were in the heavily unionized Midwest and how much they struggled in the South and parts of the West.

Infographics: How Clinton fares against Trump

Less than a week until the United States of America (USA)’s presidential election scheduled for Tuesday, November 8, 2016, which will be the 58th quadrennial U.S. presidential election.

Amidst several criticisms and revelations that have graced the campaigns, Hillary Clinton‘s once commanding national lead has slipped to less than 3 points over the weekend.

Although Donald Trump is still far behind in the electoral count, his chances have vastly improved over the last week.

According to DailyWire, after suffering a bloody October where all of the business mogul’s positive momentum from September was undone, he has begun to climb again in the national polls, while Clinton falters following a series of damaging headlines — most notably the reopening of the FBI’s investigation into her private email server.

Though Trump still trails in most of the battleground states — including North Carolina, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado — he has closed the gap in many and regained the edge in the crucial swing states of Ohio and Florida, only narrowly anyway.

Below are the most recent polling numbers for the three traditional key swing states as reported by DailyWire:

    FLORIDA

In Florida, as of Oct. 30, RCP’s poll average finds Trump back in the lead, though by a minuscule margin. In a four-way contest, Trump holds a razor-thin 0.5% lead (44.8 – 44.3). The results of the two-way polls show the same gap: 0.5% (45.7 – 45.2). The two candidates were tied in late September. Clinton led the state by over 4% in mid-August and over 2% in mid-October.

    OHIO

In Ohio, as of Oct. 30, Trump maintains a narrow lead over Clinton. In a four-way race, Trump leads by 1.3% (45.8 – 44.5) and by a 1.5-point margin in the head-to-head surveys (46.5 – 45). Trump held an over 3-point lead in the first week of October, while Clinton led by 5 points in late August.

    PENNSYLVANIA

    In Pennsylvania, as of Oct. 30, Clinton holds a 5.2-point lead in a four-way contest (46.5 – 41.3), a 3-point slip from a month ago. Head-to-head surveys show her with a similar advantage: 5% (46.7 – 41.7). In mid-October, Clinton held an over 9-point lead.

Recession: Nigeria’s plight started in 1884 – Prof Ojeniyi

Nigerians are impatient with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, Professor Ade Ojeniyi has said maintaining that it is too early to criticise the current administration for problems that are embedded in the foundation of the country.

In his opinion, Nigerians are expecting results too soon, “because the foundation for our suffering as a people was laid on 15th of November 1884 at 2:00pm in Germany where all the European countries except Switzerland had the Balkanisation of Africa.

Prof. Ojeniyi, who holds doctoral degrees in both veterinary and human medicine further noted that Nigerians need not blame the current recession on the Buhari-led administration, noting that many should revisit the country’s history for a better understanding of the crisis.

The Professor admonished Nigerians to return to those days when farming was the major

abroad have proved their mettle, their capacity, their efficiency, their devotion, their knowledge and their experience.

He lamented that the professionalism and skills of these professionals are hampered by so many factors that introduce so many variables in their functionality when they return to home country to practise.

The one-time Chief Physician and Government Medical Advisor to the Ministry of Health in Greenland identified the lack of power supply, lack of equipment as well as the lack of drugs, and of course security, which affects all, as factors that compromise the energy, the enthusiasm, the devotion, the conviction, their truism of Nigerian professionals abroad.

The Denmark-based Professor, who emphasised that the lack of security heightens the tension for all Nigerian professionals in the security service, the state and civil services, and others, condemned the level of noise pollution in the country observing that besides transporters who make unnecessary noise on the road, religious activities have also become another major source.

His words: “The noise pollution is just deafening. When somebody returns from work, then in the neighbourhood you see some people shouting ‘Jesus is coming with noise’ you can’t even rest your head. At 7pm, the Arabic people start with loudspeakers; ‘Allah Akbar’.

“If you say your religion is the best and it is a personal thing, why do you want to disturb your Neighbour? Probably your neighbour wants to rest or perhaps he is on night duty and he works 5 days in a week, the noise damages or lowers the loop of people that are exposed to it.

“If somebody does that in my wife’s country (Denmark), no problem, within 10minutes, there would be a Police car and an ambulance with a doctor, so that the person would be handcuffed by the police and the doctor with the ambulance would take such a person to the psychiatric ward and all the shouting would be over once the person is taken. Then they would check if something is wrong with the head because you have neighbours who want to rest.”

It is very dangerous to people’s ears, some people don’t relate it and they discover that as time goes on people have to raise their voices to communicate because they think that they are not been helped because the number of decibels should actually determine the level of reaction to sound.

Speaking about the level of concentration at the workplace from the perspective of a professional surgeon, Ojeniyi observed that sometimes you may be doing something and the electricity distribution company decides to interrupt power supply or somebody comes in for some injury of a nature, which demands that you do something right away but can’t be done because of power outage.

“It is just difficult for you to concentrate on a major operation per time because of so many interfering factors from the government to individuals and even other societal issues,” he said.

According to him, industrial actions may not be the best for medical professionals to express their grievances but maintaining that when you have a medical personnel, for instance, going on strike, it has to be extremely serious before they do that, even when they go on strike, they always ensure that emergency service is still maintained.

Currently a visiting Professor at the University of Texas, School of Public Health in Houston, Texas, Ojeniyi said: “Industrial action can be based on several things; one, is it because of selfishness, is it because of greed, or is it because you are frustrated that you can’t give that service you really want to give because of lack of this or that, because of passion. So it is difficult to just condemn outright.

“We have also gone on strike in Denmark where things work perfectly. Maybe just a tiny thing, when they take action it could be for one hour or two hours, but that one o two hours would be effect by the society because everything goes smoothly.

“So, when there is any strike, it affects the system, it reverberates. It is like pulling a net and it affects the whole system. So ideally, there shouldn’t be reasons for any strike but frustrations many times necessitate their attention because when they do not draw attention, it is ignored. And when the attention is gained you discover that it is bureaucrats who have no idea of what medicine means, that are taking the decisions.”

ADVAN: Airtel’s CEO encourages practitioners on digital advertising

Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Segun Ogunsanya, has called on advertising practitioners to pay close attention to digital advertising as part of efforts to connect with the target audience and ensure maximum returns from advertising spend.

Ogunsanya, who was speaking at the 2016 ADVAN Awards for marketing excellence held at the weekend in Lagos, noted that with the ubiquitous nature of mobile devices, digital advertising is the future of advertising.

According to him, there are over 5 billion people with access to mobile phones; hence, a mobile device remains the easiest way to connect with people, especially the youths who are the leaders of tomorrow.

He noted that Millennials are looking at many different screens for advertising. They are now concentrating on digital media, and advertising has to move to the digital space.

We, the clients, can no longer rely on strategies counting on users to just watch our messages on TV or listen to the radio anymore. Nor can we be so sure that consumers will watch a prime time show at the prime time, or in their homes, or out of work hours, he said.

While speaking on what brands should do differently, the Airtel CEO urged advertising practitioners to ensure that engagement with the targeted audience is personal and relevant just as he noted that brands must always adopt a two-way communication (conversation) with their target audience so as to get feedback.

The Airtel helmsman also recommended that organisations must measure and evaluate their advertising campaigns in order to test the effectiveness, saying that this will aid the direction of future advertising campaigns.

The event, which held on Saturday, October 29, 2016, at The Muson Centre, Lagos, was a night to celebrate brands that have done extremely well in the field of advertising.

At the awards, Airtel’s Smart Connect 2.0 campaign was the co-first runner-up in the Campaign of the year category, an award they jointly won with Grand Oak Limited, makers of Lord’s Dry Gin.

The President, Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), David Okeme, who declared the event open, highlighted the importance of advertising to individuals and the economy.

Okeme noted that Advertising unlocks economic activities, thus boosting a country’s GDP.

ADVAN is the umbrella association for all advertisers (Corporate organisations that engage in major advertising) in Nigeria, established in 1992 as National Advertisers’ Association of Nigeria and in 1994 was renamed Advertisers’ Association of Nigeria (ADVAN)

  • Twitter to lay off 9% of staff

Twitter to lay off 9% of staff

    • As sale process appears to have come to nothing

The layoffs are expected to impact about 350 employees across sales, partnerships and marketing efforts, according to the company. The goal is to push Twitter toward profitability as an independent company.

This is contained in the company’s third-quarter letter to shareholders on Thursday, saying: “The restructuring allows us to continue to fully fund our highest priorities while eliminating investment in non-core areas and driving greater efficiency.”

According to the CNN, Disney, Google and Salesforce were all said to be interested in bidding for the social network, but ultimately backed off. Only Salesforce admitted as much publicly.

“It wasn’t the right fit for us,” Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, said earlier this month.

On a conference call with analysts after the earnings release, Twitter CEO and co-founder, Jack Dorsey said his only comment on the acquisition rumours is “our board is committed to maximising long-term shareholder value.”

“We’re taking the necessary steps to ensure Twitter is well positioned for long-term growth,” Dorsey added.

In the absence of a takeover in the near term and any significant signs of growth, Twitter must push for a turnaround as an independent company. Its first big step is to improve its bottom line through cuts.

Dorsey took over as Twitter’s permanent CEO a year ago and presided over an earlier round of layoffs that reduced staff by 8%.

He has since focused on growing Twitter through live video streaming and making it easier for users to discover relevant tweets in their news feeds, with limited results.

Twitter’s monthly active user count, easily the company’s most scrutinised number, beat estimates by rising to 317 million in the September quarter from 313 million the previous quarter. But growth remains anaemic compared to newer competitors like Instagram and Snapchat.

The stagnant user growth is all the more stunning when you consider that Twitter’s relevance has arguably never been greater. It is the platform of choice for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and is, therefore, a key tool for following the U.S. election.

Twitter says it reached a “record” number of daily active users during each of the three presidential debates, but that apparently did not translate into many new monthly active users.

Twitter’s ability to attract millions of new users has been stymied by what many views as a complicated interface and the all too frequent threat of harassment on the platform. Now Twitter is promising fixes to address abuse, which it says have been in the works for months.

“Next month, we will be sharing meaningful updates to our safety policy, our product and enforcement strategy,” Twitter said in its shareholder letter.

Twitter did manage to beat Wall Street’s estimates with quarterly sales of $616 million, but growth there is slowing to a halt. Sales increased just 8% from the same quarter a year earlier. By comparison, its sales in the third quarter of 2015 were up 58% from the year before that.

Twitter posted a net loss for the quarter of $103 million. It also expects to incur as much as $30 million in costs from the layoffs, due to severance payouts and stock-based compensation.

The stock was up nearly 5% in pre-market trading Thursday.
