    Students’ protest stall activities at Akwa Ibom State University


    Students of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Obio Akpa Campus, on Tuesday started a protest over closure of school portal. The students, whose protest disrupted activities on the school campus and force businesses in the neighbourhood to close down, are also angry with the institution over boycotting accreditation and mid semester break. The peaceful protest, led by the Students Union Government (SUG) Secretary General, Comrade John Bassey, was under Akwa Ibom Student Protestscontrol following the presence of heavy security men. According to eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, the Police Area Commander of Ikot Ekpene, Mr Chidozie Ike, was present at the scene of the protest. The Nation, gathered that the students are demanding that the institution opened school portal for full payment of tuition for 2014/2015 academic session Also, students demand that the new policies on the hiring of school bus by the students at about N30, 000 should be addressed. Similarly, a Campus Press Club member, reported that some students were unable to take examinations due to non-payment of their first semester tuition. Although, the eye witness could not confirm the number of students affected by the situation, it was gathered that most students had to pay house rents with their tuition since hostels were no more available. Akwa IbomMeanwhile, the students are appealing to the school management to understand the prevailing challenges that forced them into diverting their tuition. According to the students, landlords increased house rent upon knowing that School hostels were no more available for the students. They further blamed the situation on economic challenges in the country, where some of their parents are yet to receive salary. Hence, they (Students leaders) on behalf of the students make the plea on the grounds of humanity, saying: "However they are going to do it, we want the portal to be open for full payment of the entire session school fees," Comrade Bassey, SUG Secretary, was quoted to have said. The Nation was unable to confirm directly, the situation of things around the campus, but it was gathered that major road leading to the school was closed by heavy traffic as commercial activities were also interrupted.

    Management of Cadbury Nigeria has reiterated the company's commitment towards the development of Lagos State through various developmental initiatives. This was revealed during a courtesy call on the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode by Cadbury Nigeria Leadership Team led by Managing Director Cadbury West Africa, Mr Roy Naaman, Finance Director, Mrs. Yimika Adeboye, Company Secretary/Chief Counsel, Mrs. Fola Akande, Manufacturing Director, Mr Nasir Malik, and Head Corporate and Government Affairs, Mr. Bala Yesufu. While expressing gratitude for the warm reception accorded to Cadbury Nigeria in the state, Managing Director, Cadbury West Africa, Mr Roy Naaman, maintained that Cadbury has enjoyed cordial relationship with the government and people of Lagos State over the years. “On our part, we shall remain a responsible corporate citizen of the state and continue to partner with the government through employment generation, participation in various developmental initiatives, contribution to the state treasury in different forms and stimulation of socio-economic activities in the state,” Naaman noted. In his remarks, Governor Ambode observed that Cadbury’s newly commissioned factory is good news for the Lagos economy and a boost to the states’ efforts to bringing investments to the state. “As a state, we have a duty to support Cadbury not just because you employ our citizens and the social responsibility activities you undertake, but to ensure we keep enjoying the quality and consistency your brands bring to our community,” Ambode stressed. Also speaking, Mr. Bala Yesufu, Head, Corporate & Government Affairs, Cadbury Nigeria, noted that the courtesy visit was not only to express appreciation to his Excellency for unveiling Cadbury state-of-the-art factory recently but was also  necessitated by the need to continually build, strengthen, nurture and sustain relationship with Government at all levels.

    Saraki requests policy recommendations from Nigerians


    President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki has commended Nigerians home and abroad for their prospective policy recommendations. According to Saraki: “Last week, I asked Nigerians, at home and abroad, to partner with us at the Senate by suggesting prospective policy recommendations. “We received thousands of mails, and I must say I am delighted at the in-depth report submitted by some of you,” he said. The Senate President noted a few of the recommendations, which according to him, stood out viable for the 8th Senate to look into. “Some suggestions such as the Animal Control Bill by Benard Bojuwoye, the Personal Income Tax Act Reform by Michael Oshinyemi a Nigerian in diaspora, and a bill to create more awareness on violence against citizens by Oludiya Funmilola, stand out as viable recommendations that the 8th Senate will look into. “Other stand-out recommendations include a bill designed to address the exploitation of our tax laws and exploitation of Nigerians by multinational firms by Femi Obagun, and a brief policy for more stringent laws against rapists, a Workers Protection Act, an Alternate Financing to Economic Growth Act, a Policing and State Security Act, and a Government Transparency and Anti Corruption Act. “These are just some of the suggestions that we have received, which I plan to go over in detail in the next few days to see how we can consider some of these bills,” Saraki said. He then urged more Nigerians to share their thoughts and ideas saying the ideas will be crucial to establishing more representative laws.     Candy Crush Saga, a match-three puzzle video game is about to be acquired by a new owner. The deal has been sealed at whopping $5.9bn (£3.8bn). The new owner, US computer game company, Activision Blizzard, which produces World of Warcraft and Call of Duty, is buying King Digital Entertainment, the creator of Candy Crush. According to Activision in a statement, the acquisition would make it a global leader in interactive entertainment across mobile, console and PC platforms. The Call of Duty series is one of the world's best selling console games, while Candy Crush is among the most popular games on mobile devices and on PC. Video game publishers are switching from the physical sale of games to digital growth as consumers move from consoles to playing on Smartphones, iPads and tablets. Activision Blizzard's chief executive, Bobby Kotick told an online News Agency that the company wanted to broaden its reach and appeal to a larger demographic. He said that 60% of King Digital Entertainment's players were female, and that no games console or hardware, besides a smartphone, was needed to access its games. It will be recalled that Candy Crush Saga was released by King on April 12, 2012 for Facebook, and on November 14, 2012 for iOS, Android, Fire OS, Windows Phone, Windows 10, and Tizen. It is a variation on their browser game Candy Crush.
