Former Senate President Mark mourns General Abbe

Former Senate President David Mark has described the death of General Godwin Osagie Abbe as the fall of an Iroko tree, leaving a significant void in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, Mark praised Abbe as an exceptional patriot who dedicated his life to serving the nation both as a military officer and in civil governance.

Reflecting on Abbe’s passing, Mark referred to him as a comrade-in-arms who exemplified integrity, discipline, and unwavering love for humanity and the country.

Senator Mark stated that “General Abbe was a great soldier, one of the leading lights in the Arms Forces of Nigeria. In all the assignments he handled, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, dedication, and patriotism and was faithful to the end.

“As military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states at different times, General Abbe left a legacy of accomplishments and indelible footprints.

“As General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Commandant Training and Doctrine of the Nigerian Army (TRADOC) as well as Commandant, National  War College (NWC), General Abbe demonstrated brilliance and upheld the highest traditions of the Arm Forces, especially in the protection of the territorial integrity of the nation.

According to the former Senate President, “He was Nigeria’s Minister of Defence with a difference. He was a leader of leaders” stressing, “In General Abbe, Nigeria has lost one her best and fertile minds. He has left a huge vacuum that would be difficult to fill.”

Senator Mark prayed that God, in His infinite mercy, grant General Abbe eternal rest and the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

  • Plot to draft David Mark for PDP chairmanship fails

Plot to draft David Mark for PDP chairmanship fails

    • Count me out of party’s internal crisis, says Atiku

The underground work to draft former Senate President, David Mark, into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship race appears to be losing steam, party sources said yesterday.

There are ongoing  moves in the party, spearheaded by some of the state governors elected on the platform of PDP, to get rid of the  acting national chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagum and replace him with a substantive chair.

Benue State born Mark, a retired brigadier general,  is one of the  people being tipped to occupy the office.

A former governor of Benue State,Gabriel Suswam and Engineer Conrad Utaan   have both also indicated interest in the position.

Utaan insists that  “there is no other solution to the lingering crisis  in the PDP than  resolving  the issue of  chairmanship, and there is no other way of resolving the issue aside  returning the position to the North-Central where it belongs rightfully, on moral and legal grounds.”

    Utaan also hails from Benue.

Mark’s supporters are promoting   him as a consensus candidate who can be relied upon by all the factions in the party to salvage the fortunes of the former ruling party.

They cite his state/geo political zone which is  the  same as that of  the former Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, whose truncated tenure is due to lapse in December 2025.

Ayu threw in the towel in the heat of the controversy that trailed the party’s loss of the 2023 presidential election.

A former National Security Adviser, some retired generals and former top government functionaries are said to be driving the Mark chairmanship agenda.

However, party sources told The Nation in Abuja that the campaign is not receiving the kind of positive response his promoters were expecting from party members. Some even go as far as saying the scheme has failed.

Party sources said the former Senate President himself is not particularly enthusiastic about the project for some personal reasons, including his age – leading to fears it may eventually be jettisoned.

He is currently 76 years old.

A source said the demands of the office include extensive travelling within the country and wondered how much of that could be done by Mark at his present age.

It was also gathered that the ongoing  litigation over the party leadership does not look encouraging to Mark.

The source also wondered how much  work  Mark could do to put the  party in order by  December 2025.

Damagum’s position as acting national chairman is currently protected by the October 11,2024 order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the national executive committee (NEC) and board of trustees (BoT) of the PDP  from removing him.

Justice  Peter Lifu also  ordered that aside Damagum, no other person must be recognised as the PDP acting national chair until the party’s convention scheduled for December 2025.

Lifu held that party members are bound by Articles 42, 47 and 67 of PDP’s constitution which stipulates that national officers of the party can only be elected during the party’s national convention.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/ CS/579/2024 was filed by Umar Maina, Yobe state PDP chair.

Another Federal High Court sitting in Zamfara State last week declined to stop the party from postponing a meeting of the NEC.

There were speculations that the purported meeting  was to remove Damagum .

The Nation gathered that despite claims by the Chairman of the PDP National Reconciliation Committee, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, that the party is now one and there are more factions, entrenched groups remain antagonistic of each other.

On one side are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his supporters and on the other are those of Damagum and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

The Atiku group, backed by some of the governors, is  insistent on Damagum’s ouster largely because of the danger they perceive he constitutes to Atiku’s presidential bid in 2027.

President of PDP Frontliners, Engineer Abdulraheem Ilyasu Garba, said while the major stakeholders in the party may have made a ‘tactical withdrawal’ in their battle for the control of the party for now, there is still a great deal of work to be done to resolve the differences among members ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said  PDP stakeholders acknowledge that with or without a replacement for Damagum, some measure of ferment is inevitable because the political processes of interest articulation in a party like the PDP cannot be the same  as obtains in  some other political parties.

While shying away from direct comments about Wike and Atiku, he acknowledged that it is normal for highly  influential stakeholders like the duo to have loyalists who sometimes do proxy battles that they are not sent to do.

He believes that Damagum’s position  is safe for now as only a collective decision of various stakeholders can remove him.

He said:“Damagum is not going anywhere for now; his presence along with members of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees, National Working Committee (NWC), PDP National Assembly Caucus and the Forum of Former PDP Governors at last Tuesday’s meeting at Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja says something.

“Only his personal decision in response to likely proposals by PDP governors can get Damagum to leave and revert to his position as Deputy National Chairman  (North) but that has not happened yet so, he can only be dislodged that way by a collective decision that includes his input.

“Besides, the November 16, 2024 Ondo Governorship election is keeping everyone focused and the October 11 judgment of Justice Peter Odo Lifu at the Federal High Court in Abuja declared that Ambassador Umar Damagum remains the PDP’s acting National Chairman until a collective decision can be taken at the national convention scheduled for late 2015.”

‘Count me out of PDP crisis’ – Atiku

Speaking on the PDP crisis yesterday,Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shuaibu, said the former vice president has no hand in the matter.

He said any suggestion that Atiku is sponsoring people to foment trouble in the party is bizarre.

“Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar believes in due process and he has been focused on how to build the PDP into a more formidable party and he completely has no hand in any crisis that would rather draw the party backwards,” Shuaibu said.

“It is extremely farfetched and unfair to insinuate that Atiku has any involvement with any individual or group’s plans to brief lawyers and go to court towards vacating Justice Peter Lifu’s judgement.”

Atiku and Wike are locked in a running spat sparked by Atiku’s presidential bid in  2023.

Atiku’s ally,Iyorchia Ayu had failed to quit as PDP National Chairman after Atiku’s emergency as the party’s presidential candidate.

Wike had kicked that it was against the constitution of the PDP for the chairman and the presidential flag bearer to come from the same part of the country.

Only last weekend Wike called Atiku a serial loser who has been repeatedly rejected by Nigerian voters.

He told the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election to pack his things and go home.

Atike dismissed Wike’s comment as  baseless rants and said “ It is clear that Mr. Wike is more concerned with self-interest than addressing the real challenges faced by the nation.”

Nigeria @ 64: Time for serious introspection, says David Mark

Former President of the Senate, David Mark on Tuesday, October 1, reflected on Nigeria’s tortuous journey to nationhood and submitted that the time calls for sober reflection as the country celebrates its 64th independence anniversary.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, Senator Mark pondered on the nation’s progress.

He acknowledged the persistent challenges of insecurity, poverty, disease, and underdevelopment, but emphasized that Nigeria’s abundant human and natural resources have the potential to turn the situation around for the better.

This, he said, is achievable if all citizens are patriotic and united with a common mission and purpose.

“Disappointing as the situation may seem, the shortcomings of the past should serve as useful lessons for progress. We must learn from our past mistakes and work towards a better future,” Mark said.

He recalled the 30-month-old fratricidal civil war, occasional ethno-religious conflicts and the uncertainties surrounding political engagements, saying that all these issues are traceable to inadequacies of leadership and citizens failure.

Mark cautioned against divisive tendencies and inflammatory statements in recent times that tends to exacerbate the already fragmented atmosphere.

The former Senate President emphasised that political leaders should  lead by example and strive to put the citizens at the centre of their programmes and policies.

He added: “Leaders must prioritize the needs and well-being of the people.”

Mark says he is optimistic that Nigeria can come out of its current challenges if all Nigerians resolve to bury the hatchet of yesterday, “We must unite and work together to address our challenges.”

To further address the challenges of underdevelopment, Mark advocated for huge investments in enterprises and production that would improve income and end capital flights.

He said: “We need to create an environment where everyone can ply his or her trade in any part of the country without fear of intimidation or molestation. We need to be our brother’s keeper at all times. I wish Nigerians a prosperous nation.”

  • Mark, Ekweremadu seek free, fair elections

Ahead of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security operatives to conduct the exercise in a manner that is fair and just to all parties and their candidates.

Mark also asked all stakeholders in the Nigerian project to ensure that the elections are conducted within the ambit of the law insisting that the will of the people must be allowed to prevail.

He cautioned those fanning the ambers of war to think otherwise “because there is no other country we can call ours but Nigeria”.

Senator Mark expressed optimism that a peaceful conduct of the election is possible if everyone carried out his or her legitimate duty in a honest and orderly manner according to the rules of the game.

He urged the electorate to vote for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in order to turn around the countries declining economy once again.

Senator Mark in a statement by his media Assistant, Paul Mumeh, expressed optimism that the pains of a declining economy would be reversed for gainful employment and a prosperous nation if the PDP returns to power.

He said the PDP has a defined road map on how to revamp the ailing economy and get Nigeria to work again.

Senator Mark therefore urged the electorate to vote for PDP Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, its governorship, Senatatoral, House of Representatives and state House of Assembly candidates in the elections.

Also Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (lNEC) and security agencies will take the either the blame or the praise of the elections.

He reminded INEC and the security agencies that they would bear both the blame and praise in the conduct of the 2019 general elections, admonishing them to exhibit the highest sense of patriotism and professionalism.

A statement by the media aide to Ekweremadu, Uche Anichukwu, said that the Deputy Senate President gave the admonition while speaking with journalists at the Enugu West People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) Mega Rally, which held at Agwu, Enugu State.

Anichukwu quoted Ekweremadu to have said: “I believe that the INEC will be able to conduct free and fair elections if they follow the rules. They have said that several times. But they also have to understand that, as the President would say, the world is also watching us. At the end of the day, it is the INEC that will be on trial. It is their chairman that will be on trial. If anything goes wrong, he will be held responsible. If it goes well, he will take all the credit.

“We have come a long way as a country. We have tried to freshen up our electoral processes through some legislative efforts. We have amended the constitution severally in order to get the best practices. But no matter the quantum of laws we have made, the important thing is for INEC to live up to expectations to get their people to do the correct thing whether you are ad hoc staff or you are a permanent staff of INEC. Ultimately they will answer for their conduct”.

He added that it was also up to the security agencies to live up to their several promises of neutrality, professional conduct, and protection of INEC, electoral materials and voters.

“We have heard their promises. We will give them benefit of doubt. But they must have to remember that in 2015, some people allegedly compromised their positions and many of them lost their jobs. To compromise yourself because of one politician that choses to be fraudulent is not worth it. Then, you would have compromised your career and family.

“They (security agents) must realise that there will be a day or days after the elections. Whatever you do, you will also answer for your conduct.

“Importantly too, I believe that the best judge of human conduct is your conscience. I appeal to them to be conscientious and professional because we are going to tell the story after Saturday in terms of who did what and eventually blames will come and praises will as well.”

Ekweremadu tipped the PDP to record a landslide victory in Enugu, but called for vigilance.

He said, “Because Enugu is basically PDP we are not expecting any problem. We just expect that people will move very early to the polling stations, stay there for the arrival of the voting materials, crosscheck the materials to ensure that all necessary materials are there, and then commence the process of accreditation and voting.

“After voting they should remain there and wait until the end and of course to watch the votes collated and results announced before they leave. They will not only take copies, but also take pictures of the results and be able to circulate as widely as possible. With that I am sure that they will be able have control of what happens. Eternal vigilance”, he concluded.

The mega rally turned a carnival as popular Nigerian musical artistes, including Davido, Flavour, Zoro, Quincy, Nigga Raw, among others thrilled the mammoth crowd and dignitaries such the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwunayi.
