  • Mark: Let’s keep faith alive

Former Senate President David Mark yesterday told Nigerians not to despair in the face of the daunting economic and socio-political challenges.

He said Nigerians should remain steadfast for democracy to endure.

Mark, in a goodwill message to Nigerians, noted that it was by deliberate choice and design that the nation chose presidential democracy as the best form of government because it is representative and participatory.

In a statement by his media assistant, Paul Mumeh, Mark noted this year’s democracy is unique “because it is the first time in the last 17 years of uninterrupted civilian administration that an opposition political party is in charge.”

Despite criticisms, he noted that the solid foundation the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration put in place for 16 years guaranteed the congenial atmosphere that enabled an opposition party to win elections.

According to him: “Which ever side of the divide one finds him or herself, we must strive to play such roles honestly and patriotically to make our country a better place.”

He urged governments at all levels to initiate policies and programmes in consonance with the wishes and aspirations of the masses.

Former Senate President David Mark has been associated with running eight offshore companies registered on the British Virgin Island.

His former wife is also listed as owning shell accounts.

Senator Mark (Benue South), who recently won re-election into the upper chamber for the fifth time, is the latest Nigerian to be named in the files belonging to Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

The firm, reputed as one of the most secretive companies in the world, helped clients to register offshore entities, some of which are then used to launder money, evade tax and dodge sanctions.

Senate President Bukola Saraki’s wife, former Delta State Governor James Ibori, Saraki’s brother Laolu, his associates Obi Asika and Olufela Ibidapo, have also been named as running shell companies that are listed in what is known as the Panama Papers.

The global scandal claimed Iceland Prime Minister’s job yesterday following pressure from the citizens.

In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron, whose dad Ian was named, denied having anything to do with the Panama Papers. But the opposition Labour Party called for an independent inquiry.

The revelations are among the findings of a lengthy investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and more than 100 other global news organisations.

The companies associated with Mark are: Sikera Overseas S.A, Colsan Enterprises Limited, Goldwin Transworld Limited, Hartland Estates Limited, Marlin Holdings Limited, Medley Holdings Limited, Quetta Properties Limited and Centenary Holdings Limited.

In the documents, Mark is  repeatedly marked as a politically exposed person. At a point, the former Senate President sent documents, across to Mosseca Fonseca to prove that he was clean.

The businesses Mark is conducting with the companies could not be ascertained.

Online newspaper Premium Times quoted a previous investigation it conducted as showing that Mark’s estranged wife, Vikky Preye Mark, was also exposed as an operator of secret offshore accounts.

Mrs. Mark operated an account with the Swiss branch of HSBC, but with details made largely secret.

Although she was known within the bank as the beneficial owner of the account, she was largely identified with a secret code – 14312MP.

Mrs. Mark opened the account on December 18, 1989 and closed it on July 12, 1991. About that time, her husband, then a top ranking army officer, had served as military administrator of Niger State and minister of Communications.

Court papers during a messy divorce with his wife suggested that some of Mark’s children schooled in Switzerland, but it is not clear whether it was during that period that Mrs. Mark operated the HSBC account.

The court papers also showed that the Marks operated foreign accounts elsewhere.

About six million pounds in four accounts – three at the Northern Bank, Isle of Man, and one at the Allied Irish Bank, Jersey – were frozen in October 2000 as a result of the ancillary relief sought by Victoria Mark in the couple’s divorce case.

If proven that he ran the accounts, the senator may have run foul of the law.

Part 1, Section 7 of the Code of Conduct law provides that “any public officer specified in the Second Schedule to this Act or any other persons as the President may, from time to time, by order prescribe, shall not maintain or operate a bank account in any country outside Nigeria”.

Section 23 of the Code of Conduct law stipulates punishment for violators as follows:

    (1) Where the (Code of Conduct) Tribunal finds a public officer guilty of contravening any of the provisions of this Act, it shall impose upon that officer any of the punishments specified under subsection (2) of this section.

    (2) The punishment which the Tribunal may impose shall include any of the following-

    (a) vacation of office or any elective or nominated office, as the case may be; and

    (b) disqualification from holding any public office (whether elective or not) for a period not exceeding ten years.

The former senate president could not be reached for comments yesterday.

Premium Times quoted his spokesman Paul Mumeh as saying: “I’m not sure about the accuracy of your claims. I need to consult him before commenting.”

Later last night, Mark’s spokesman Paul Mumeh said: “I’m not sure about the accuracy of your claims. We know where that may be coming from. It is political.”

Mark to Benue South: I won’t fail you

Former President of the Senate Senator David Mark has asked his Benue South constituents of Benue State to be steadfast just as he promised not to disappoint them no matter the circumstances.

Senator Mark told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Women group who visited him at his Abuja residence Tuesday ahead of the forthcoming rerun election that he is irrevocably committed to the development of Idoma land and Nigeria at large.

He said the Appeal Court Tribunal which annulled his election was a surprise but he respects the sanctity of the rule of law and would do all within the ambits of the law to reclaim his mandate.

Senator Mark said he is encouraged by the plethora of solidarity visits to him since the annulment which he believed”is a clear testimony that  my people truly desires my services.”

” I am encouraged by your visit and support far. I can assure you that I will always do my best to promote development, peace and unity of our people. Whatever  I can do to make our society a better place, I will not hesitate to do that,”  Senator Mark stated.

On the forthcoming rerun, the former Senate President urged the people to remain focused and unperturbed in spite of unwarranted provocation, pointing out that only the Idoma people would vote to determine who should represent them at the National Assembly without external interference.

Earlier, the leader of the PDP women in Benue state Mrs. Abeje Egwa pleaded with Senator Mark not to abandon the ship because a lot of people rely on him for Socio political direction.

Mrs. Egwa pointedly told Mark not to be discouraged by the litany of betrayals and blackmailers in the polity, saying “those who are with you are far more than the few that are opposed to you.”

He stated: “We have decided to stay with you and vote for you like we did before. We are prepared to defend the mandate we gave you in the first instance. Any time, any day, we shall vote for you.

“We are comfortable with your leadership and representation. We have no reason to shift the goal post, because we believe that our people have more to gain in your leadership.”

  • CAN endorses Mark for rerun

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benue State has endorsed ex-Senate President David Mark for the Benue South rerun.

CAN, led by its Zone C Chairman, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Odufu, who yesterday visited Mark in Otukpo, said the endorsement was a unanimous decision.

Odufu said: “We are pleased with you. We are impressed with your achievements. We stand by you.”

CAN listed projects brought by Mark to the zone as the multi-purpose Otobi water dam, Oweto/Loko bridge, health centres, schools and annual scholarship.

Odufu noted: “Benue South cannot compromise merit and integrity on the altar of sentiment. Our people are wise to know what is right. We will not be controlled by external forces.”

The senator thanked CAN for its support and assured people that he would protect the interest of the Idoma nation.

He said they should not be intimidated.

“One thing I’m sure of is that our people know their rights. Nobody from outside Idoma land will determine our destiny. Only the Idoma will vote, not external forces.”

  • Anambra: Oduah wins Senatorial election

    Anambra: Oduah wins Senatorial election

The Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Stella Oduah, on Tuesday, won her election to the 8th Senate.

Oduah, who won the election by over 30, 000 votes, had her victory upheld by the Appeal Court sitting in Enugu, after dismissing an appeal against her victory.

The former Minister of Aviation had been brought before the election tribunal in October, by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance , APGA, Dubem Obaze, who cited electoral malpractice in the elections which held in March.

Although, the Appeal Court threw out another Senator voted under the party’s umbrella, Uche Ekwunife, Oduah and her party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have reasons to celebrate.

Similarly, the election of former Senate President, David Mark as a member of the 8th Senate was nullified by an appeal court.

Mark’s case was followed by Ekwunife’s loss.
