Everton set to reappoint Moyes as manager

David Moyes met  with Everton officials yesterday  to agree a deal to return to the club. Moyes, who left West Ham at the end of last season, is set to sign a contract running at least two years.

The 61-year-old – manager of Everton between 2002 and 2013 before joining Manchester United – will replace Sean Dyche, who was sacked on Thursday.

It is understood Everton’s owner, the Friedkin Group – who only completed their takeover of the club last month – hope to announce the appointment before this weekend.

Dyche paid the price for Everton’s run of just one win from their last 11 games, leaving them a point above the Premier League relegation zone in 16th  place. His sacking was confirmed just over three hours before Everton’s FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman placed in interim charge.

  • West Ham appoints Pellegrini on three-year deal

West Ham United have appointed former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager on a three-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

Chilean Pellegrini left Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune on Saturday and replaces David Moyes, who guided the club to a 13th-place finish in the league this past season.

“I am delighted to welcome Manuel Pellegrini to West Ham United.

“He is one of the world’s most respected football coaches and we look forward to working with him,” West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan said.

“It was important that we appointed someone with knowledge and experience of the Premier League.

“Someone who already has an understanding – not only of the teams and players we face – but of West Ham United and our ambitions,” Sullivan explained.

Moyes: I can manage any club in the world!

David Moyes believes he is capable of managing any club in world football.

The Scot has overseen two wins and a draw in West Ham’s last three league games to lead the club away from the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Prior to taking over at London Stadium, Moyes could not prevent Sunderland from being relegated to the Championship last season, while he lasted less than a year at both Real Sociedad and Manchester United, where he succeeded managerial great Alex Ferguson.

Despite three failures in a row, Moyes backed himself to be a success at West Ham, who face Arsenal in an EFL Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

“I have to come here and show I can do it,” Moyes said. “If you’re any player, you have to come and show what you can do.

“Your reputation doesn’t stand for anything. You have to come and try to get up and show you’re capable of doing the job.

“I think I’m capable of doing the job at any club in the world, so I’m sure I can do it at West Ham.”

Manuel Lanzini will be banned for the EFL Cup tie – unless West Ham successfully appeal – after he was given a two-match suspension for diving in Saturday’s Premier League win at Stoke City.

But Moyes defended the Argentine forward against accusations he deceived referee Graham Scott by going to ground under a challenge from Erik Pieters.

“I am a bit surprised because the incident, the referee was 10 yards from the ball, nothing blocking him, it was clear to see the defender goes for the ball and doesn’t get it,” Moyes told reporters.

“From my point of view, they have gone against the referee if that is the case. I think whoever the panel were, the [television programme] Goals On Sunday panel said it was a definite pen and nothing to talk about. It was a really tough call, very hard call to make, but on the day the ref gave the penalty.

“I find it strange that there are three people on Sunday that all say it was a penalty yet today we find there are three people who say it is not. I think to be as clear as that, it is very difficult.

“After his performance on Saturday, the only thing I said to him was how well he played. He made the first goal, created the other two, it was a brilliant performance, so there was nothing that we had to say to him after the game.

“Let me be clear, I am the first one who will say ‘let’s get rid of diving and let’s make sure it’s not in the game’ – so that’s why I am annoyed at this one because I don’t think anyone can be definitely sure that it was.”

Late goal by Silva extends Manchester City’s winning run to 13 games

David Silva scored a late goal as runaway English Premier League leaders Manchester City restored their eight-point lead with a 2-1 victory against West Ham United on Sunday.

Silva converted Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant pass from close range in the 83rd minute as City maintained their blistering form this season and won their 13th successive EPL game.

Nicolas Otamendi had converted substitute Gabriel Jesus’s cross in the 57th minute to equalise, after defender Angelo Ogbonna had headed West Ham into the lead.

It was the most unlikely lead at the end of a first half in which the hosts dominated.

City have not lost a game since April, and face second-place rivals Manchester United next Sunday.

West Ham, who have won only twice all season, sit 19th — three points behind West Bromwich Albion in 17th.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, in his post-match comment, said: “Today was different to (the late winning goal against) Southampton — I did not think that was going to happen.

“But today, since after five minutes in the second half, I felt we were going to score. Our pace and pass were quicker and better. That is why we are so happy — every game is so tough and it is important to keep our momentum.

“We started well but lost our patience and couldn’t find the players in position. They moved too much.

“But you have ups and downs — what is important is that in the second half it was outstanding the way we played.

“It means we have done 39 points in a row. That is a lot. You see how they run and how they fight, that’s why we are so proud again.

“Before next week’s match against Manchester United, we have to travel to Ukraine and after that think about Old Trafford. We are going to try to be who we are,” he said.

West Ham manager David Moyes, on his part, said: “I have to say it was a really good effort. We defended much better today.

“We’ve worked a bit on it. We had one day where we could prepare.

“We needed our goalkeeper to play well. He got both hands to most things. I thought most of it was outside the box. I have to say we did a really good job.

“What a chance we had to make it 2-2 late on. My feeling was I thought we deserved it (to equalise).

“You get results in different ways and it looked as though we might have got one today. Our effort today was top. For long parts of the game, we were in with a chance of getting a result.

EPL: Sterling stunner keeps City clear, as chasing pack gets wins too

Just when the chasing pack thought the Manchester City juggernaut was suffering a misfire Raheem Sterling scored a stunning stoppage-time winner to give the English Premier League leaders a lift.

They earned a 2-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday to move to 40 points.

With Manchester United having cut the gap to five points and Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool winning, any City stutter would have been cause for celebration.

But Pep Guardiola’s side thundered on with a club record 12th successive league victory.

Former Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu had cancelled out Kevin De Bruyne’s opener in the 75th minute.

But six minutes into stoppage time Sterling, for the third match running, snatched City’s winner, this time with a sublime curling shot.

Manager Antonio Conte was sent to the stands after a verbal meltdown at Stamford Bridge as his Chelsea side laboured to a 1-0 defeat of struggling Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Rudiger’s first Premier League goal sealed victory.

“I have apologised because I did the wrong thing,” Conte said of his angry reaction to a fourth official when his side were denied a corner kick in the first half.

“I have been in to see them after the game. It’s right to speak and apologise with them.”

Arsenal struck three goals in four second-half minutes as they thrashed Huddersfield Town 5-0 with Mesut Ozil scoring one and supplying assists for Olivier Giroud, who scored a brace, and Alexis Sanchez.

Alexandre Lacazette’s early goal had separated the sides before the interval although the French striker went off with a suspected groin injury.

He will probably miss Saturday’s home clash against Manchester United.

Arsenal have won 12 consecutive home matches.

Liverpool moved into fifth place with Mohamed Salah taking his tally for the season to a chart-topping 12, thanks to a double in a 3-0 victory at Stoke City.

After 14 games City have 40 points, with United on 32, Chelsea 29, Arsenal 28 and Liverpool 26.

Burnley are now sixth, ahead of a sliding Tottenham Hotspur, as Chris Wood and Robbie Brady scored in a 2-1 victory at Bournemouth — their fourth win in five league games.

“Where we are in the league, everyone will be surprised by that,” Burnley boss Sean Dyche said.

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick, the third with a wonder goal from inside his own half, as Everton thrashed West Ham United 4-0.

It was a horrible return to Goodison Park for David Moyes whose West Ham side remained in the bottom three.

Sam Allardyce, who will be named shortly as Everton’s new manager, watched on from the stands as caretaker boss David Unsworth signed off with a victory that lifted Everton to 13th.

Whatever happens below them, City are looking unstoppable and with 40 points from 14 games and a goal difference of 35 they have recorded the best start in Premier League history.

They were not at their fluent best and Southampton came closest to scoring before the break with Wesley Hoedt striking the woodwork for the visitors.

But Sterling’s effort sparked wild celebrations at the Etihad as the former Liverpool player struck yet another late goal to take his tally for the season to 13.

He has now earned City nine extra points this season with his timely interventions and his latest effort was arguably his best, picking out the top corner with an unstoppable effort.

“Raheem is a match-winner, I am so happy for him. He is special, it was an amazing goal. It is more than important, it is beautiful,” Guardiola, whose side have dropped only two points this season, said.

City are now two wins away from matching Arsenal’s record 14-match winning run in the Premier League.

  • Journey man Moyes steps in as West Ham boss

Journey man Moyes steps in as West Ham boss

West Ham have appointed David Moyes as their new manager after sacking Slaven Bilic on Monday.

Bilic had been under pressure for a while following an underwhelming start to the season, having received significant backing in the transfer market.

The Croatian’s final game in charge was Saturday’s 4-1 hammering by Liverpool, a result that leaves the club in the relegation zone.

Moyes – thought to be on a contract until the end of the season – is the man who has been tasked with getting West Ham out of their predicament, though his appointment has been met by a mixed response.

The Scot publicly confirmed his interest in the job during a television appearance at the weekend, prompting some West Ham fans to air their disappointment at the prospect of him taking over.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the meeting the supporters, being in the stadium with them.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them getting right behind the team and my team also. We need the support, we need everybody with us.

“It’s a big job we have in hand now but I’m sure with everybody together, we can get the right results between now and the end of the season.”

This is Moyes’ first job in football since resigning from his post at Sunderland in May, having overseen the Black Cats’ relegation to the Championship.

Moyes also had unsuccessful spells in charge of Manchester United and Real Sociedad following an 11-year stint with Everton.

He will now have the best part of two weeks to prepare West Ham for his first match in charge, with a trip to Watford up next after the international break – Moyes’ 500th Premier League fixture.

West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan explained: “We need somebody with experience, knowledge of the Premier League and the players in it, and we believe David is the right man to turn things around and get the best out of the players at the club.

“He is highly regarded and respected within the game, and will bring fresh ideas, organisation and enthusiasm.

“He proved with Everton that he has great qualities and we feel that West Ham United is a club that will give David the platform to display those qualities again.”

  • Sunderland’s 10-year stay in Premier League ends

Sunderland’s 10-year stay in the English Premier League ended on Saturday with defeat against Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the result coupled with Hull City’s goalless draw at Southampton means Sunderland are 13 points from safety with four games left.

Bournemouth’s Joshua King scored the only goal with just two minutes left, tapping home from Ryan Fraser’s pass.

The Norwegian also came close in the 20th minute but his shot rebounded off the post and crossbar and into the arms of Jordan Pickford.

Artur Boruc saved from Jermain Defoe in the first half, as well as from Fabio Borini and George Honeyman in the second half.

But David Moyes side failed to sustain any real pressure on the Bournemouth goal.

The Black Cats have now been relegated from the Premier League for a joint-record fourth time.

Little has gone right for Sunderland ever since Sam Allardyce, who saved the club from relegation last season with just one defeat in their final 10 games, left to join England.

Moyes was named as his replacement a day later, but he had also given a hint of what the fans should expect after just two games of the season.

The Scot was left with little time to bring in summer recruits but those he did bring in have already disappointed.

Of course majority of them are his former players at Manchester United and Everton.

Their first win did not come until November but they followed it with three victories in their next six games in a brief glimmer of success, largely built around Defoe’s goals.

But since then Sunderland have won just once in 17 games and Defoe is without a goal in 10 games.

Black Cats’ fans have grown increasingly frustrated at Moyes’ results, negative attitude and demeanour throughout the season.

These have resulted in chants for him to leave being heard in recent weeks.

Moyes hails Anichebe’s heroics against Hull City

Sunderland manager David Moyes on Saturday praised Victor Anichebe following the striker’s brace in his team’s 3-0 victory over Hull City in the English Premier League (EPL).

The former Manchester United manager believes that Anichebe‘s performance was even more impressive than the show he put up before the international break against Bournemouth.

“I thought Victor was immense today. He wants to be loved and I think the supporters do love him. He is a real powerful boy, ” allnigeriasoccer.com quoted Moyes as saying in his post-match comments.

“I thought Victor was more impressive today than he was at Bournemouth.”

    Anichebe happy with Moyes reunion

Nigeria striker Victor Anichebe has said he is delighted to reunite with his former manager at Everton, David Moyes, at Sunderland.

Anichebe, 28, has joined Sunderland on a one year deal after his contract at West Bromwich Albion was not renewed.

The Super Eagles attacker played under Moyes between 2006 and 2013.

“I’m really happy to be here at a great club,” africanFootball.com quoted Anichebe as saying on his new English Premier League (EPL) club.

“I have a lot of good friends here and everyone knows that I know the manager really well.

“He brought me through as a young player and was a big factor in me coming here.

“I had a few options in England and Europe but the manager was a huge pull for me. He knows me inside out and I feel like he can get the best out of me.”

  • Moyes appointed Sunderland manager

    Moyes appointed Sunderland manager

Sunderland has confirmed the appointment of David Moyes as the club’s new manager after Sam Allardyce’s departure to take the England job.

Moyes has signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light, with the role his first in the Premier League since being sacked by Manchester United in April 2014.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice,” Goal quoted chairman Ellis Short as saying on Saturday.

“He is a man whose football pedigree speaks for itself and is someone I have long admired. I have spoken with him on many occasions and I have always been hugely impressed.

“He was my number one managerial target for the last five appointments, but his desire to honour existing contracts meant we were not able to bring him to Sunderland previously. To be able to finally welcome him as our manager is fantastic news for the club.

“The fact that David has committed to a four-year deal is a clear demonstration of his belief in what he can achieve here.

“It is our aim to become a better, stronger and more stable football club and with a manager of David’s calibre and experience at the helm, we have a fantastic opportunity to begin looking upwards, rather than downwards every season.”
