Davido and co: No thanks to alcohol

I intend a pun of how the death incidents that have trailed pop singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, in the last one week are turning out. Pardon me if this offends sensibilities in view of the departed souls; life itself is such an ‘irony’.

In case you’re just reading this for the first time, three acquaintances of the rave singer died in mysterious circumstances – within one week. The first, which is causing more uproar, was about Tagbo Umeike, who, according to autopsy, died of suffocation. The other two friends – DJ Olu and Chime were found dead in a car, few days after.

To what many would call a suspicious coincidence, Tagbo may have been suffocated to death inside his car, going by the lead given the police from a whistle blower and actress Caroline Danjuma who claimed she was affianced to the deceased.

Caroline who is known for some controversial altercations with celebrities was right afterwards, but not many saw it that way when she first called out Davido, insisting that the singer knew more than meets the eye.

But for the actress, who gave the police a lead, we probably wouldn’t know the extent to which Davido and his other friends were involved in the circumstances under which Tagbo passed.

That aside, 40 shots of Tequila, as reportedly consumed by Tagbo on the eve of his demise, is capable of leading any man to self-slaughter. Caroline was wrong there – a man is capable of the unexpected. Tagbo proved this, albeit posthumously, and Caroline must be too stunned to argue. How could she? Tagbo isn’t alive to claim witnesses lied.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter now that Tagbo drank to stupor, “why did you do it?” could have been Caroline’s next question. And he could have made her happy by confirming it wasn’t for the money. Yes, Caroline claimed he hailed from a wealthy family, and didn’t need a bet of N200, 000. And I bet, Tagbo could have said to her, ‘I did it for fun’.

I doubt that Caroline’s hard feeling towards Davido means that she wants him to dance naked; my diction for life imprisonment, the worst penalty for manslaughter, should it be ascertained that Tagbo died as a result of the carelessness of Davido and company.

I guess she merely wanted Davido to confirm what she already knew about how Tagbo died. She didn’t claim he killed Tagbo, but it was worrisome to her that the singer should feign ignorance of the situations leading to his death.

Now that we all know, according to the police, that Davido lied because he probably didn’t want anyone linking him to his friend’s passing, what would the police charge him for, and what would be the verdict of the court of law?

If you ask me, Davido is at the mercy of the police. It doesn’t matter what fans and foes of the singer think. The police as forerunners in this case will determine, to a large extent, what the outcome of the case will be in court – if it ever gets to the court at all.

Whatever the outcome of this matter, lessons must be learned. Youths, whether in showbiz or other endeavors must be cautioned about the slippery nature of their age. Alcohol must be condemned in the reckless form that the late Tagbo, Davido, and friends abused it.

If Tagbo was not so drunk, he probably would not have been locked up in the car as claimed, to the extent of suffocation. If his friends were not drunk too (irrespective of the degree), ‘their second’ sense would be active to know that it is dangerous for Tagbo to be locked up in the car (whether or not it was the deceased that pressed the lock button). The remote cause is the sorrow and regret that now pervade the air.

Concerning the late DJ Olu and Chime, autopsy is what everyone is waiting for, and we are sure to learn a lesson or two from their misfortune too – who knows?

Tagbo’s death: Danger of mixing drugs with drinks

Tagbo Umeike, the late 35-year-old friend of Davido, hiphop musician  died on his birthday after reportedly consuming 10 shot of tequila and  engaging in a competition with friends at a shisha room in Lagos Island.

The details of the Medical Examiner’s office autopsy made public revealed that alcohol was a substantial factor that led to Tagbo’s death.

The medical examiner result, which was released on the 9th of October, showed that Tagbo had alcohol and drugs in his system capable of easing a person into the early stages of hypothermia and eventual death.

The toxicology tests detected alcohol (Bacardi 151, 75.5% Alcohol) and Topiramate, a medication for epilepsy and/or migraines in a man’s system, in Tagbo.

Tagbo’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) by the report of the examiner was said to be at 0.112, higher than the 0.08 legal limit for normal human being, the coroner’s office stated.

    Topiramate and Alcohol

Topiramate (also known as Topamax) is an anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug. It is used for epilepsy in children and adults, originally used as an anticonvulsant. It also used in reducing the number of migraines.

Mixing Topomax with Alcohol mostly beverages with ethanol, leads to excessive somnolence (drowsiness or sleepiness) and other forms of nervous system depression. Both when combined are synergistic. It enhances the effect of either or both.

Topiramate, like alcohol, can cause dizziness, impaired memory, impaired concentration, poor coordination, confusion and impaired judgment. The central nervous system depression, or impairment, combined with cold exposure can hasten the onset of hypothermia and death.”

Effect of ethanol in Tequila and other alcohols

An alcoholic beverage is a drink that contains ethyl alcohol (ethanol). Ethanol is a psychoactive drug and is one of the oldest recreational drugs known to man. It is responsible for the state of alcohol intoxication in humans when consumed.

Tequila, Whisky, Rums, Vodka, Brandy, Scotch or scotch, all are produced with ethanol, so mixing it with an-depressants, painkillers, sedatives and antipsychotics will have detrimental side effects on the body, by reducing the effectiveness of medications, and increase the risk of overdose and death.

If a prescription drug is taken, the drug half-life is always unknown or the rate at which it is eliminated from the body. For this reason, it is always believed that the drug is out of body system when it really isn’t.

If alcohol is then taken while the prescription drug is still in body, there is a high rate of it being detrimental to the body system.

    Tagbo: Davido quizzed for ‘lying’

…As autopsy reveals friend died of asphyxia

Music artiste, David Adeleke, aka Davido is under fire for lying to the police that he did not know how his deceased friend, Tagbo Umeike, got to the Lagos General Hospital’s premise.

Acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, Wednesday, told reporters that Close Circuit Television  (CCTV) footages from the hospital proved that Umeike was brought in dead (BID) by Davido’s escort driver, Tunde Usutu and two of his (Davido) friends, Agbeje Olaoye and Idris Busari.

He said the men abandoned the deceased inside his ash Toyota Camry LSD378EL on the instruction of Davido.

According to Edgal, Davido, his friends and the escort driver were being questioned by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Lion Building.

He said: “On October 3, at about 9:20am, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of General Hospital Lagos, Oparanti Moshood, alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Lion Building that an unidentified male was brought in dead (BID) in an Ash Toyota Camry Saloon car marked LSD378EL by two unidentified males.

“From the international passport found in the deceased’s car, the DPO gave his identity as Tagbo Umeike. Immediately after, one Caroline Danjuma, an actress and the victim’s fiancee, published on her Instagram page that her boyfriend died in the company of one David Adeleke, alias Davido and friends.

“To be objective and verify facts, I called for a pre-investigation meeting in my conference room. In attendance were all parties including family, friends of the deceased; those of Davido; Caroline Danjuma; the DPO and investigating officers.

“The meeting confirmed that the deceased Tagbo Umeike on that day met and had drinks with friends at Shisha Bar amongst whom was Davido. The bar tender confirmed the deceased had as much as 40 tots of Tequila and exhibited signs of drunkenness.

The CCTV footage also confirmed this.

“Davido had told the police he had left Shisha Bar for DNA Night Club in Victoria Island without the deceased and was only informed by mutual friends of his death while he was at DNA.

“However, investigation revealed that Davido’s white Toyota Hilux escort driver, Tunde Usutu, accompanied by one Agbeje Olaoye and one Idris Busari, both Davido’s friends, took the deceased to the General Hospital Lagos and abandoned him in his vehicle on the instruction of Davido.

“The CCTV footage at the hospital picked the escort vehicle and the entire activity. The vehicle was recovered from Davido’s residence at 7, Awoshika Street, Lekki Phase 1.

“This completely debunks Davido’s claim that he did not know how the deceased got to the General Hospital. The interim autopsy report stated that the victim died of Asphyxia.”

On the cause of death of two other Davido’s friends who were found dead inside a BMW car marked KJA631AY on October 7 at Banana Island, Edgal said the autopsy had not been concluded.

He said: “A case of sudden and unnatural death (SUD) was reported on October 7, at about 8pm by the CSO Banana Island, Ikoyi, to the DPO Ikoyi that two persons namely, Olugbemi Abiodun and Chime Amechina of Flat Bill, Ocean Parade, were found dead inside one white BMW Saloon car marked KJA631AY, at underground garage in the estate.

“Police operatives raced to the scene where the bodies of the victims were taken to LASUTH, Ikeja for joint medical examination to determine cause of death.

“Victims were found motionless and were confirmed dead by a medical doctor. Further search into the vehicle revealed that wrapped substances suspected to be weeds were recovered and might have been used by the victims.

“Liquid substances were observed on their mouths and nostrils. From investigation by policemen at the scene, there were no visible marks on their bodies. The result of the autopsy is still being awaited. The pathologist said there was need for further findings before conclusions could be drawn on the cause of death.”

The singer has responded to the invitation, as he was seen at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, in the company of his lawyer.

Davido: Times Caroline Danjuma has sparked controversies on social media

Known for sparking controversies on the social media and deleting them almost immediately, former actress and mother of two, Ms Caroline Danjuma was at it again, when on Wednesday, she accused pop singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido of dumping the corpse of a young man by name Tagbo at an undisclosed General Hospital in Lagos.

Although she had since deleted the post, the uproar it generated continues to generate reactions in the media.

While it is yet unclear, the circumnstances under which Tagbo died, picture and video evidences pointing to Davido’s acquaintance with the deceased surface, lending credence to their frolickiAng moments shortly before his demise.

Reacting to the accusation, Davido denied involvement in Tagbo’s death, making little or no revelations on his snapchat page.

“RIP Tagbo, God knows the truth! People are just wicked. This is what I get for treating everyone like my brother. I was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of my friend, Tagbo. First and foremost, my sincere condolences and prayers are with his family and friends at this time. I’ve been in this position before multiple times and also of recent. But it is also disappointing that false information and complete lies have been put out there, using my name as usual. Out of total respect for Tagbo and his family, I will not discuss this matter further for now,” said Davido.

While it is still not clear the circumstances surrounding his death, footage has emerged of the late Tagbo, having a nice time with friends at a club on his birthday.

Although there is nothing in the clip to determine date of event, the young man was seen in the company of friends of tequila shots. A voice could be heard telling him jokingly; “Tagbo you no get money oh! Tagbo How far?”

Fans have since called out Caroline Danjuma for accusing Davido, with many giving instances the former actress had uploaded controversial posts on Instagram, only to take them down after a few minutes.

Sometime ago, Caroline threw a shade on social media without mentioning the name of whom it was directed. And when followers started insinuating the alleged person could be Linda Ikeji, in view of her then media drama with Wizkid, she deleted the post.

She once talked about broken homes in a post she captioned “#prayforthechildren”, but deleted it as soon as fans started making comments about her marriage.

She was also at loggerheads with singer Cynthia Morgan over the latter’s controversial promo photo.
