  • Secondus, Ekweremadu laud Ekiti PDP primary

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus says that the successful conduct of hitch free and transparent gubernatorial primaries in Ekiti state on Tuesday is a consequence of the party rebranding and repositioning project that has proved to be on course.

Prince Secondus said that the real winner from the exercise is democracy and not any individual as the PDP family in Ekiti would be healthier from the primary.

In a congratulatory message he sent to Governor Ayodele Fayose and other leaders and members of PDP in Ekiti state soon after the primary, the National Chairman appreciated them for conducting themselves well. He charged them to note the pre- primary understanding that there will be no winner or loser but contestants all.

In a statement from his media office signed by Ike Abonyi, the National Chairman commended all those whose made huge sacrifice that helped to make the primary a success particularly Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and his team who conducted the primary. He also commended in particular Senator Dayo Adeyeye for not only accepting the result but commending the process as free, fair and credible.

Prince Secondus assured members and supporters of the party in the state and indeed nationally, that his campaign promises that the era of impunity and imposition of candidates in the party is gone remains and Ekiti is the first test case for us.

He charged any member of the party desiring to fly the flag of the party at any level to return to the grassroots and market themselves because in a rebranded PDP ticket is not given in party offices but by the people at the field.

The PDP leader warned the APC in Ekiti state not to create any nuisance in their frustration ahead of the July election as available intelligence shows that the opposition in the state is trying to launch havoc  just to disrupt the peaceful election.

Prince Secondus finally urged PDP members in the state to remain vigilant and not relent until the final success is achieved in July.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu also congratulated the Ekiti State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the peaceful conduct of the primary election that produced the Deputy Governor of the State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as the governorship candidate of the party in the July 2018 gubernatorial election.

Ekweremadu emphasized that more important than the result was the process, noting that the PDP had, once more, showcased the growing internal democracy in the party.

He advised other political parties to emulate the Ekiti PDP example to avoid overheating the political temperature of the State.

He said: “I congratulate the PDP, Ekiti State, on this transparent, peaceful, free, and fair outing. It is has showcased, once again, the growing internal democracy in our party.

“I commend Governor Ayodele Fayose, the Returning Officer, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and our party leaders for showing leadership when it mattered the most.

“I commend the aspirants for their exemplary sportsmanship. I enjoin Prof. Olusola to continue to work closely with every party faithful, especially the former aspirants, to ensure a massive victory for the PDP in the governorship poll”.

Ekweremadu also called on the people of Ekiti State to continue to support the PDP.

  • Ekiti poll: Fayose intimidating aspirants – Adeyeye

An aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Ekiti State governorship election, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has accused Governor Ayo Fayose of intimidating and harassing other aspirants in the race.

Adeyeye, who was at the Abuja national secretariat of the party to submit his nomination documents, said the governor was making the contest tough for aspirants other than his anointed candidate, Olusola Eleka, who is also the deputy governor of the state.

“The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, in September last year, said he had already chosen his governorship candidate for the party. Even the so called candidate said everything was over. We laughed and said that’s not possible.

“This party has a constitution and we believe that we should follow the constitution of the party. There are processes in which candidates are chosen,” Adeyeye said.

Admitting that the governor has the right to support any aspirant of his choice, Adeyeye said Fayose’s insistence on foisting his anointed candidate on the party has created an atmosphere of fear in the state.

“This has created an atmosphere of fear in the state as we speak. So many party members are so afraid to associate themselves with other aspirants apart from the one anointed by the governor. But we are not bothered about all this. We are still confident that we are going to win.

“This is not the right time to contest for governorship in any state, where the entire body of the party has been deployed against you. You are being intimidated and harassed on a daily basis just for no other reason that they are supporting you. All we ask for is a free and fair election and total security for everybody coming to participate in the election,” he said.

  • Fayose suspends councilor, ward chairman over ‘loyalty’ to Adeyeye

The crisis rocking Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State over the party’s governorship ticket has deepened with the suspension of some party chieftains believed to be loyal to former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

An elected councillor for Ido/Osi Ward, Abiodun Daramola, the PDP chairman in the ward, Sunday Ojo and seven women leaders from Ado-Ekiti were suspended allegedly on the orders of Governor Ayo Fayose.

The latest action is causing tension in the party and is believed to be against the spirit and letter of Senator David Mark’s panel set up to resolve the crisis.

Daramola told our correspondent on Monday that some policemen from Ido police station stormed the council secretariat with handcuffs to effect his arrest.

According to Daramola, the policemen said they were acting on the instruction from Fayose who asked the police not to allow him to sit in plenary with his colleagues.

The councillor said he was saved from arrest because of the personal relationship he has with the policemen.

He added that his colleagues told him that he was punished for being an “Adeyeye boy.”

But the Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM) has declared the suspension of the councillor and ward executives as “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.”

PAAM Director of Media and Publicity, Niyi Ojo, in a statement on Monday described the suspension as “a huge joke by a shameless jester,” noting that the processes for suspension are clearly spelt out in the PDP constitution.

The statement reads: “One is embarrassed that a governor of a state did not know the rudimentary provisons of Nigerian Constitution and the PDP constitution in respect of elected officials.

“He unilaterally selected chairmanship of the councils and councilors through YES and NO balloting system and he has gone ahead to render them a robot that should not have a mind of their own.

“He believes in gangsterism, thuggery, intimidation and coercion as a tool in politics of Ekiti as if he is the Emperor of a conquered territory. This is a governor that has rendered every party man poor by denying them adequate party patronage and now forcing them to do his bidding.

“We are members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and not Ayo Fayose Democratic Party. All other loyal party men and women should not bow to this act of cowardice from the governor.

“We knew all along that a leopard cannot change its spot. We knew that the tyrant will never abide with the resolutions of Senator David Mark Reconciliation Panel and we shall not chicken out from the battle to save the soul of PDP from Fayose.”

  • We won’t allow Fayose to manipulate Ekiti primary – Adeyeye

We won’t allow Fayose to manipulate Ekiti primary – Adeyeye

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has declared that Governor Ayo Fayose would not be allowed to manipulate the party’s primary.

He said Fayose’s endorsement of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, “no longer holds water with the verdict of the David Mark-led panel that all aspirants would be allowed to partake in a credible shadow election.”

According to him, the national leadership of the party has assured all aspirants of a level playing field at the governorship primary to be conducted at a yet-to-be-identified date in the state.

Adeyeye, who spoke on Monday while featuring on an interview programme on Voice 89.9 FM, said the Reconciliation Panel led by former Senate President, David Mark, has recommended that all aspirants be allowed to participate in the primary.

Speaking through the Director of Publicity, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM), Chief Niyi Ojo, the governorship aspirant said Governor Fayose has agreed to support any aspirant who wins the primary.

He said: “The governor has understood that it is better for the party to win this election, so nobody will be intimidated, harassed and punished for supporting any aspirant.

“Fayose has agreed to support any aspirant who wins the primary. The eternal joy the governor will have is to have continuity of PDP and not continuity of any particular aspirant.

“The endorsement of Eleka (Olusola) holds no water.  We will all go for the primary and I know that my principal (Adeyeye) will win the primary.

“Those that will organise the primary will not be lodged at the Government House. If anybody believes that Fayose will write the list of delegates, such a thing will not happen.”

  • PDP will overcome latest factional crisis – Adeyeye

PDP will overcome latest factional crisis – Adeyeye

The immediate past spokesman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has expressed dismay at the latest factional crisis in the party.

Adeyeye said the defunct National Caretaker Committee handed over a “highly united party” to the new National Working Committee (NWC) led by Prince Uche Secondus.

He said it would be a “big disappointment” if the party leaders start another factional crisis, adding that the rift will be resolved very soon.

A group of aggrieved members led by one Emmanuel Nwosu had on Wednesday formed a splinter group known as Fresh PDP following crisis that trailed the December 9 national convention of the party.

They kicked against the conduct of the convention, citing the emergence of a “unity list” as a major flaw in the exercise.

Adeyeye spoke with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday shortly after he was welcomed back to his home state by thousands of supporters.

Adeyeye said: “I am now home, I am no longer in the executive of the PDP and you know that we have just handed over after serving the party.

“It will be a big disappointment if we start another (factional) crisis; as far as the National Caretaker Committee in which I served is concerned, we have handed over a united PDP.

“We have conducted a credible convention, the first real elective convention in the history of the party and it was very successful.

“We had anticipated that there would be problems after this convention and that was why we set up a reconciliation committee headed by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.

“He has swung into action already, he is already working. I believe that if we all give support to that committee, it will be able to solve these problems.

“I believe that within the next weeks, we will get over these problems. It is not unexpected but I believe we will get over our problems.”

  • PDP raises alarm over plot to disrupt convention

PDP raises alarm over plot to disrupt convention

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) on Wednesday alleged that some “overzealous elements” in the All Progressive Congress (APC) were planning to disrupt the party’s national convention holding on Saturday in Abuja.

Mr Dayo Adeyeye, National Publicity Secretary of the National Caretaker Committee of the party made the allegation in a news briefing in Abuja.

Adeyeye called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate and ensure that the convention was not disrupted.

He said that the president was not involved in the plot but that some members of his party were out to cause confusion.

“We have credible information that some overzealous elements in the APC Government want to disrupt the PDP national convention.

“It is not from the very top; they know that if we have a hitch-free convention, it will mark the end of APC in power.

“We call on President Buhari to investigate and ensure that those who want to disrupt the convention refrain from doing so,” he said.

According to Adeyeye, disrupting the convention is tantamount to disrupting the country’s democracy.

He urged Buhari to go the extra mile to ensure that the PDP convention was successful by providing sufficient security in and around the arena.

He stated that while PDP was in power, the party did not interrupt programmes of other political parties rather, it encouraged the growth of other parties.

Adeyeye said that accreditation for the convention would be strictly monitored, and warned that persons not accredited would not be allowed within the vicinity of the Eagles Square.

According to him, the list of accredited delegates will be made available to all aspirants at least 48 hours before the convention.

According to him, this is to clear the air as it was rumoured that the list was altered to suit selected aspirants.

Adeyeye said Osun would not participate in the national convention and that Anambra was still under consideration, following disagreements in the state.

He said that former Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, would deliver a speech the convention but may not be allowed to vote.

He announced that the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, would meet with all chairmen of the party in the states on Friday.

He said that the meeting would hold at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja at 10 a.m. and that attendance was mandatory.

  • PDP NEC approves Dec. 9 for national convention

PDP NEC approves Dec. 9 for national convention

The People Democratic Party ( PDP ) National Executive Committee has approved Dec. 9 for the party’s national elective convention.

The PDP National Caretaker Committee Publicity Secretary, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, disclosed this on Tuesday at the end of the party’s 76th NEC meeting in Abuja.

He said that the proposed budget for the convention that would hold at the Eagles Square was also submitted for NEC consideration.

Adeyeye added that the NEC also granted waivers to new members in Anambra and Oyo States who recently decamped from other political parties to the PDP.

“As you know in Oyo state, so many people are joining PDP from other parties and we want to give them a level playing ground just like other members who have been in the party.

“The effectiveness of that is that as we are conducting congresses of the party from wards to local government level, new members can participate.”

Asked if the PDP candidates for Anambra governorship election, Mr Obaze Oseloka, was among those granted waiver by the NEC, Adeyeye said that Oseloka had been granted waiver before the party’s primary election.

“What we did today was for the NEC to ratify the decisions of the national caretaker committee.”

He added that the NEC also approved party election guidelines for 2017 Congresses and national convention.

Adeyeye said that the proposed amendment to the party’s constitution was presented for consideration to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2013.

“Some of these proposed amendments were accepted, some rejected while others are still been considered.”

He added that the final decision on the party’s constitutional amendment would be taken at the forthcoming national convention.

  • PDP criticizes FG’s $5.5bn loan bid

PDP criticizes FG’s $5.5bn loan bid

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has expressed concern over the plan by the Federal government to obtain 5.5 billion dollars foreign loan.

The party in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by National Publicity Secretary of its National Caretaker Committee, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, said the proposed borrowing was needless.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday written to the National Assembly requesting the approval of the loan.

PDP said that the loan if approved by the National Assembly, would plunge Nigeria into further debt, and consciously mortgage the future of the unborn generations of the country.

It added that it was an attempt to push the nation into more debt that would affect the future negatively.

It noted that as a party that governed Nigeria “meritoriously for 16 years and handed over a buoyant economy to the APC in 2015’’, it was worried about the development.

“We are dismayed at the rate at which the APC government is plunging the nation into debt through local and foreign borrowing.

“The figure released recently by the Debt Management Office ( DMO ) stating that the nation under the administration of the APC government in the last two years has borrowed N7.51 trillion is mind-boggling.

“As major stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we are worried,” it said.

The party urged the National Assembly to stop “this latest demand for foreign loan”.

  • PDP asks defectors to vacate seats

PDP asks defectors to vacate seats

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday asked two of its members in the House of Representatives that defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vacate their seats.

Zephaniah Jisalo (FCT) and Ahmed Tijani (Kogi) had on Thursday announced their defection from the PDP to the APC on the floor of the House.

The two lawmakers were elected in 2015 on the platform of the PDP.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party said it would explore every available legal means to ensure that the two legislators lose their seats.

Stating that there was no division in the PDP to justify the action of the lawmakers, Adeyeye said the defection of the lawmakers was illegal and contrary to provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The statement said: “In the light of this, we wish to inform all Nigerians and the leadership of the National Assembly, most especially, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara, that the duo of Hon. Ahmed Tijani from Kogi State and Zaphaniah Jisalo from the FCT who announced their defection from our party to the APC have embarked on illegal acts, contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Their excuses for defecting from our party are vague, cooked up and purely irrelevant to any section of the Nigerian Constitution.

“We thus expect and demand, that the Honourable Speaker and the body of Principal Officers of the House of Representatives, act in accordance with the Oath of allegiance they took to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by immediately ensuring that the seats of these defectors are declared vacant .

“In the face of tyranny that is gradually creeping on the nation, the least the leadership of the National Assembly can do, is to stick with the rule of law and uphold the dictates of the Constitution without fear or favour, without considering allegiance to any political affiliation.

“As a political party, we stand by the patriotic and constitutional position taken by Hon. Yakubu Barde from Kaduna and that of Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai from Delta State who stood against the dastardly act which these former members of our party exhibited in the chambers of the House of Representatives when their supposed letters of defection were read out by Speaker Dogara to whom the letters were submitted.

“We expect nothing aside a noble support by the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the rule of law and we say loud and clear that there is no division whatsoever in our party, the PDP that would have served as justification for the defections announced by the two members in the chamber.

“For clarity purposes, the Supreme Court has decided in a landmark judgment delivered on July 12, 2017, that there is no leadership crisis in the PDP and as such, the party under the acceptable leadership of the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) is the only leadership recognised by law as the authentic leadership of the PDP.

“We wish to point out clearly that anyone who announces any defection from the PDP, citing any sort of internal crisis is being a liar.”

  • Buhari’s Independence Day’s speech empty – PDP

    Buhari’s Independence Day’s speech empty – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day speech as “empty tirade,” saying the speech left the party with utter shock and disbelief.

A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adyeye, said although the party never expected anything fantastic from the President, “the level of emptiness portrayed in the statement was too grave to be ignored.”

According to the PDP, Buhari’s attempt to hoodwink Nigerians again, did not succeed, saying the speech was tailored towards deceiving the populace.

The party described the present government as rudderless, insisting that it has thrown the country into its worst economic situation.

The statement said: “We feel ashamed on behalf of the APC government, which promised much, but almost three years into its tenure, has no meaningful development to show to the people, but mere continuous deceit, blame game and display of lack of vision in actualization of its bogus campaign promises for good governance.

“We wonder how President Buhari, can,  after two and half years of being in the saddle, still maintains the stale rhyme of meeting an empty treasury after all the hard evidence of huge funds left behind by the PDP- led administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan?

“We still ask, and we expect an answer, though we know nothing will be offered as explanation. Where did the government get the money paid out by President Muhammadu Buhari as first bailout funds to states few weeks into his administration?

“Another remarkable falsehood that caught our attention from the President’s uninspiring speech is the super-imposed narratives of how successful the administration has handled the issue of insecurity in the country, especially in the North East zone.”

Describing the government as one rejoicing in self- delusion, the PDP said it has always been motion without movement since the administration took off more than two years ago.

“While the government of the PDP was able to curtail the terrorists and ensured elections were peacefully held in the troubled zone without anyone getting killed by terrorists during the election of 2015, we observe that the situation in the North East has worsened in the last two and half years,” the party added.

The PDP further mocked the government’s promise to rout the Boko Haram terrorists within two months of assuming office, saying the promise has fallen flat on the face.

“As far as we are concerned, the only achievement of the APC government as far as the issue of the Boko Haram insurgents is concerned, is the inability of government to protect Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are being bombed at will by insurgents.

“Given the comments of President Buhari, we believe that he is either unaware, or just playing the ostrich with the daily bombings and ambushing of men of the Nigerian military by the terror group.

“We say unequivocally, that insecurity has risen under this administration, as more cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, agitation for secession and general insecurity in the country had escalated.

“We also wish to let the President know that Nigerians are still waiting to see how his so called anti-corruption war will consume, through proper prosecution, his beloved suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

“Months after, the panel report is yet to be opened or treated, but the President had the temerity to tell Nigerians that he is fighting corruption.

“We are appalled that the government gave itself pass mark on how it has handled the nation’s economy, and we wonder what the APC government has done that has brought any positive impact on the economy,” the party concluded.
