    Ex-minister Olaiya Oni is dead

Former Minister of Education and pioneer Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) Dr. Olaiya Oni is dead. He was 74.

Oni, a seasoned technocrat and former Secretary to the old Ondo State Government (SSG) died yesterday at an hospital in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Family sources told The Nation that the former Head of Service (HoS) has been having health challenges since 2012, which was why he relocated from Akure to his home town, Ise-Akoko, in Akoko North East Local Government Area.

It was gathered that Oni’s health degenerated three days ago and he was rushed to Owo.

He was appointed Minister of Education during the regime of Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar.

Oni played a crucial role in the political adventure of the Labour Party (LP) which kicked out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by the late former Governor Olusegun Agagu on February 23, 2009.

Incidentally, the late Agagu and Oni were friends before Oni joined forces with Governor Olusegun Mimiko to send Agagu out of the Alagbaka Government House through an Appeal Court verdict in Benin City.

He parted ways with Governor Olusegun Mimiko shortly after the 2011 general elections and later resigned as LP Chairman on August 12, 2011.

The late Oni joined the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in October 2011.

He became critical of the Mimiko’s administration to the extent that he was attacked by some suspected LP thugs at the fifth memorial lecture held in Akure for former Governor Adebayo Adefarati.

But his journey in the ACN was shortlived as he parted way with the party’s leaders , following the emergence of Rotimi Akeredolu as the party candidate in the 2012 governorship election.

Due to his political sagacity, he was lured back into the PDP by the late Agagu and his staunch supporter, Saka Lawal, emerged as the running mate to Olusola Oke.

Oni quit politics in 2013 on the grounds that he could not cope with a party battling for recognition with its national leaders.

According to a source, “it is so painful that Baba Olaiya Oni died. I recalled he called me that he was quitting politics that he can’t cope with the lifestyle of PDP national leaders who preferred to recognise Mimiko, who was in the LP but abandoned their candidate, Oke.

“Baba said he will be focusing on his wallet packaging factory on Ilesa road in Akure where he produced cartons for goods package. But, he was frustrated when the electricity power line that brought light to the area was cut off.

“We believe that this was deliberately done to him just because he parted ways with the then LP.

“He has no choice than to close down the company. He relocated to Ise-Akoko and since then, his health status started degenerated until he says goodbye to this sinful world.”

Saka, in a text message, said Oni’s death was very devastating. “May his soul rest in peace”.

Former Commissioner for Natural Resource in Mimiko LP’s government, Mr. Solagbade Amodeni, described his death as great shock.

A former Commissioner for Transport, Otunba Omoniyi Omodara, said: “How are the mighty fallen. A leader who served with sincerity, very upright, frank and unshaken in any course he believed in.”

  • Who wants Borno ‘dead’?

It is generally believed and observed that peace is gradually emerging and the tide is turning for the good people of the Northeast especially in states ravaged by insurgency as Nigerian ground and air forces hold sway in areas hitherto occupied by the insurgents. Boko Haram fighters have been confined to Sambisa Forest and their firepower disseminated by Nigerian troops.

Consequent upon the feat being recorded by the Nigerian armed forces, normal life is gradually returning to the Northeast, especially the insurgency-infested states. Borno State, epicentre of the strife, is improving socially and economically. Traffic jam features more on the streets of Maiduguri while educational institutions hitherto shut down by the Boko Haram sect’s invasion are being reopened. Earlier reduced on account of insecurity, opening hours for commercial banks have been increased to accommodate the upswing in commercial activities. Many now sleep with both eyes closed while rising blood pressure has generally come down. Once hopeless, the people now look forward to a true Borno accompanied by the philosophy of ‘Home of Peace and Hospitality’ that has eluded it for the past six years, no thanks to the insurgency.

Peace described this part of the country before the unexpected happened. Before the shout of ‘Jack Robinson’, sad news sent shivers down spines and heartrending ululation filled the air. Breaking the news in a statement to the nation, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations, said that the Nigeria Army had uncovered a plot by highly-placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria. The announcement which brought back to mind the sad memories of death, sorrow and bloodletting of the past six years reads: “The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hailed from Borno State in particular and Northeast generally, that there is information of plans by some highly-placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country.

“The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts were determined to reverse the gains made and scuttle our efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within three months. They are enlisting the services of some non-governmental organisations in this grand design.

“It has come to our knowledge that they were employing every means to see that our operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits. It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to the campaign of calumny.

“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated. Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.

“People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition. The continued loss of lives and property in this country through terrorist activities do no one any good.”

Chairman of the Borno Elders Forum (BEF), Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari swiftly reacted to the statement. He said: “… within the last four days, this Forum has noted with great concern comments coming from the social media over a critical statement emanating from the Nigerian military high command. In the said statement, the leaders of the Northeast, particularly Borno State, were accused of not only aiding the Boko Haram insurgency but are also beneficiaries of the horrific carnage.

“While we recognise and acknowledge with the deepest sense of gratitude the tremendous efforts of the Nigerian armed forces in crushing the insurgency, we wish to state that the statement coming from the Army is a generalised one. The military, police and the DSS are in charge of security and are therefore privileged to find out those who pose security threat to the nation. We therefore expect them to, after having identified such persons or groups, promptly bring them to justice. A generalised statement such as was made may not be the solution to such serious problems.

“The BEF will give its maximum support and cooperation to our law enforcement agencies in this regard. Indeed, apprehending those identified to be involved in this devilish endeavour will be most welcome by all Nigerians.

“The forum wishes to extend its appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria for the tremendous support accorded the military and our states in ending this madness. We particularly thank the Chiefs of Army and Air Staff for their constant physical presence at the battlefront. Their exemplary conduct and leadership have greatly enhanced the military’s capacity to end the insurgency.

“We are indeed grateful. We call on our soldiers and all other security outfits to sustain the tempo of their great efforts of securing our country. We are looking forward to the quick return of normalcy in our land.”

Erstwhile Chief of Army staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah during his pulling out parade on August 5, 2015 corroborated the statement of Colonel Usman on the allegation that some people were trying to sabotage the military’s efforts in the on-going war against the insurgency for their personal interest. In his valedictory speech, Lt. General Minimah said: “If we had all stood against the terrorists at the onset through public condemnation of their activities and active collaboration with the military to confront them rather than use it as a tool to advance sectional, religious and political interests, we would not have been where we are today.”

The jaw-dropping scenario prompts inevitable questions: Who wants Borno dead? Who wants Borno in perpetual bondage? Who wants Borno to remain the insatiable grave that continues to crave innocent souls? Who wants Borno to remain  entirely in a world where there are two categories of people, enemy or friend? Who wants Borno to remain under the toga of Shakespeare’s ‘architecture of ruins’ – a landscape of shattered homesteads, severed limbs, torn lives, ravaged farmlands and looted barns?

“If there is any legacy that real soldiers in the strict prosecution of the professional campaign are supposed to leave behind, it is a legacy of orphans, widows and devastation.” Who wants this to be the continued bane of Borno? How long will Borno continue to bear the burden of millions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)? Who wants Borno to be in perpetual state of nightmare, despair, uncertainty and hopelessness? Who wants the socio-economic life of Borno to be in perpetual ruin?

The questions are endless. But let it be known that elusive peace in Borno is elusive peace in Nigeria. The warmongers and agents of division who choose to make Borno in particular and the Northeast in general a permanent battleground for their own selfish ends may end up without peace themselves. This is because the religious books teach that those who kill by the sword will go by the sword. Even Shakespeare’s Macbeth reminded us that those who murder sleep would sleep no more. Let it be known that war has achieved nothing and will never achieve anything. All wars and misunderstanding always end up on the peace table for peacemakers and the reasonable. Let us remember the Biblical injunction: “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the sons of God.” (Mathew 5:9).

Let us remind ourselves of the popular saying: “United we stand, divided we fall”. Above all, Borno for over a thousand years of its existence has fought wars and triumphed. The present onslaught against the insurgency will not be an exception.

Super Eagles most capped player and captain Vincent Enyeama of Lille of France will not be available for the weekend’s AFCON 2017 Nations Cup qualifier in Dar Es Salam, Sportinglife can authoritatively reveal .

According to a family source of the goalkeeper: ” Vincent is right now in severe emotional pains, he is not himself at all and his club in France, Lille has given him time out to go to his home town in Akwa Ibom to be with his extended family. He is naturally distraught and right now not himself.”

The source revealed to us that Vincent has since called coach Sunday Oliseh to inform him about his predicament and situation.

“He called coach Sunday Oliseh but right now the coach is really trying to persuade him to come to the Eagles camp and try to be on the trip. But Vincent is definitely not in the right frame of mind to play football right now and he does not want to jeopardise the team’s chances because of his mindset right now, the same reason his Club Lille gave him time off to return to his family in Nigeria. The mum sadly died at the weekend,” revealed the source who disclosed to us that Vincent is in deep emotional pains because of his special relationship to his mum.

Aside from Vincent, all the Super Eagles invitees are already in camp and expecting their team captain. Super Eagles’ camp sources revealed that the officials would love Vincent to still be in the team to Tanzania as an inspiration but the source, a close friend of Vincent insists Vincent is not in the right frame of mind to “Think of football right now.”

16 feared dead in Kwara cults clashes

No fewer than 16 people were feared dead at the weekend in   clashes of suspected cult members in  Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Though, the causes of the clashes could not be ascertained last night, it was gathered that suspected members of Aiye and Eiye confraternities clashed at an higher institution.

The Police said  they arrested more than 30 suspects.

Police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), who confirmed the arrests, added that 14 had been found culpable after screening.

Okasanmi said the 14 suspects would be charged to court this week.

It was gathered that one of the victims was gunned down during screening of aspirants for a Students’ Union Government’s election at the weekend.  Another victim was reportedly killed at Asa Dam Road area of the town by suspected members of the Eiye confraternity.

An eyewitness account said the death triggered reprisals and a renewed clash among members of the Eiye and Aiye confraternities, adding that it later spread to other parts of the metropolis, including: Agbooba, Baboko, Sabonline, Irewolede and Niger Road.

A resident of Niger Road said: “It all started around 4pm at the weekend. A victim who lived at Agbooba was killed beside a bridge close to the filling station at Oja Tuntun area of Ilorin.

“Another body was found at a popular hotel, on Sunday. One suspected cult member  was murdered at Irewolede yesterday. The deceased was chased to the area and was matcheted by his assailants,” the source said.

Another student, who simply gave his name as Lateef, also confirmed the attack, saying it happened at Motion Ground.

He, however, could not give the name of the victim, but he said the attack may have led to several reprisals, which allegedly left more than 10 students died.

  • ‘PDP is dead in Lagos State’

Politician, Chief Babatunde Olorogun – Etti, has called on Lagosians to join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to salvage the country.

He also urged Buhari to steer the ship of state away from economic hardship, political wrangling and insecurity.

Speaking in Lagos, shortly after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olorogun-Etti praised, Senator Bola Tinubu for piloting the party along the path of greatness. He described him as a dynamic and brilliant politician.

He said: “The development, growth and peaceful co-existence of the state should be paramount to us. APC is large enough to accommodate everybody. Senator Bola Tinubu has been fair to everybody no matter which divide of the state such a person comes from. Therefore, any indigene of Lagos State who loves this state, who believes he has a stake in the development of this state with a passion, has no reason to be in PDP” he said.

Olorogun Etti also hit at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos chapter, saying that it has no future in the state.

“It’s time to face facts. The PDP is finished in Lagos State. PDP can no longer compete in any serious way in Lagos. The local government election in the state will be a formality” he said.

He urged his supporters to go to their wards and register in the APC.

Oba Sijuwade passes on at 85 in London

FOREMOST traditional ruler Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife, is dead. He was 85.

The royal father passed on at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, United Kingdom (U.K), where he was being treated.

Sources close to the palace at Enuwa, Ile-Ife, Osun State, confirmed his demise last night.

He was reportedly flown out on Friday in an air ambulance for treatment at the Lodon hospital when his health reportedly suffered a relapse.

It was not immediately clear last night what may have caused Oba Sijuwade’s death.

Family members did not pick their telephone calls.

Sources close to the state government said the palace was yet to inform Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the development.

St. Mary’s is a general acute hospital that diagnoses and treats a range of adult and paediatric conditions.

The hospital is one of the four Major Trauma Centres (MTCs) in London, acting as the hub for the northwest London trauma network and a vital part of the London-wide trauma system which connects a series of trauma units and rehabilitation facilities.

It pioneered the use of robotic surgery, including the UK’s first da Vinci robot for keyhole surgery.

One of the late Ooni’s sons, Adegbite, is set for his traditional marriage with ace television presenter and actress Dolapo Oni on Sunday.

The intending couples had their wedding introduction a few days ago at the Oni’s family compound in Lagos.

  • Scores feared dead in Arepo pipeline fire

Scores feared dead in Arepo pipeline fire

Scores were yesterday feared dead at an oil facility at Arepo, Ogun State.

They died in the System 2B pipeline fire that erupted from a clash of two rival gangs, whose members stormed the facility to scoop product from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

It was gathered that an explosion occurred during a gun duel between the rival gangs, who regularly storm the area in boats laden with plastic containers to steal petrol.

The victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition in the inferno, which occurred after midnight on Tuesday.

The owners of the facility, the Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a NNPC subsidiary, said it had cut off supplies through the affected pipelines, but the fire was still raging in the swampy area last night.

Some eyewitnesses said they saw floating bodies on the Majidun River. Others claimed that some bodies were evacuated by security personnel.

But, PPMC spokeman Nasir Imodagbe said nobody had access to the scene because of the fire.

A source claimed he sighted five bodies on the river, adding that more may have been removed by security personnel.

He also confirmed that there were several others burnt beyond recognition.

The incident came few weeks after the Federal Government stopped the multi-billion naira pipeline protection contract awarded to the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) by the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.

System 2B is an important pipeline that transports more than 11 million litres of petrol daily from the Atlas Cove Jetty across the Southwest, spanning some 512 kilometres.

The pipeline has been a source of attraction to vandals due to its accessibility, despite huge investment by the NNPC to adopt horizontal directional drilling (HDD), that could have buried the pipelines deeper than the previous 1.5-feet installation layout.

A major attack occurred in Arepo early in the year.

At the time of filing this report, the actual casualty figure could not be confirmed, as rescuers were yet to gain access into the scene for fear of being killed.

It was learnt that neither the police nor the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the bodies mandated to protect pipelines, were on duty when the vandals struck.

A source told The Nation that the security agencies had abandoned their duty posts, adding that emergency workers said they could not enter the canal where the fire was raging for lack of protection.

Another source identified the victims as the vandals, their relations and those who buy stolen fuel in canoes, buses and tankers.

Because of the lucrative nature of their activity and the availability of a market, it was learnt, the vandals make between N300, 000 and N2 million daily, depending on their level of involvement.

Imodagbe told The Nation on phone last night that the fire broke out in the morning and that PPMC had mobilised to put it out after which the damage will be assessed.

However, he noted that because the Arepo pipeline right-of-way is located in a difficult terrain, it had not been possible to access the point where the pipeline was vandalised. Until we have access to the pipeline, we may not be able to put out the fire but we have cut off fuel supply to the line, he added.

He said: “We are aware of the Arepo fire but you know it is in a difficult terrain and we have not been able to get access to the scene. We have stopped pumping product to the pipeline to bring down the  level of combustion. We are working with other agencies of the government, including fire-fighters, to get access to the fire point and put out the fire.

“Currently, we are not able to assess the damage including the casualty figure – if any. It is only when we put out the fire that we will be able to assess the damage, repair the pipeline and resume pumping of product.”

On measures against vandalism and product theft, Imodagbe said that the police were monitoring the pipeline. He noted that even the Office of the Inspector-General of Police is involved in the policing of the pipeline.

“Towards the end of past administration, we engaged the services of community security (the Odua Peoples’ Congress).  The community policing contract has just elapsed,” he added.

Arepo has been a pipeline vandals’ haven for years. In September 2012, vandals killed three members of staff of NNPC who were sent to repair vandalised pipe there. Between September 2012 and April 2013, about four incidents of vandalism occurred there claiming several lives.

However, another source claimed that the fire broke out after the vandals’ boat developed a fault and went up in flames in the canal.

The source said: “They said that the guys had finished their business but their boat developed a fault and in the process of fixing it, an explosion occurred. Others were injured but more than a hundred were burnt beyond recognition. We could not recognise them.

“It is a very sad day for those guys because it is  not just a job where one person is involved. It is like a family business because they introduce their relations to it and even buy jerrycans for them to join.”

Although rescue workers alleged that the scene is about two kilometres away from residential area and doubted the possibility of innocent citizens being victims, unconfirmed reports claimed that over 100 persons might have died in the mishap.

An eyewitness said: “We cannot enter that place. No one has been able to gain access into the canal. We do not have security protection and even the security personnel are afraid of their lives.

“It happened behind the NUJ estate and about two kilometres from the residential area. I think only the vandals are likely victims, since there is no possibility of innocent people going 50metres close to the canal.

“We cannot enter that place unless we are sure the vandals have removed their casualties, else we may be killed.”

Police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said policemen do not work in pipelines. His NSCDC counterpart, Emmanuel Okey, said he had not been briefed on the development.

Ojukwu said: “I do not know the casualty figure. It is a calamity and we are investigating the cause of the clash as well as the fire.”

Asked why policemen attached to the pipeline were not on duty, Ojukwu said: “Policemen do not work on pipelines. We are only involved now because of the incident.”

Also confirming the incident, the Southwest spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the vandals’ clash occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

He said: “An unconfirmed report on a clash between different groups of vandals at Arepo around midnight has led to pipeline explosion.

“NNPC has been alerted about the explosion and it immediately shut down supplies to suffocate the fire, while the NNPC safety unit is making effort to put out the fire.

“No one can confirm if there are casualties or any injuries because we have not accessed the place.”

  • Two dead, two injured in Ogun accidents

Two people died and two others were injured in separate accidents in Ogun State yesterday.

One person died in an explosion at a government petroleum dump site in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Two others were injured in the accident.

The last person, a commuter, died when a truck fell on him at a bus stop in Ijebu-Ode.

The dump site is within the old State Road Maintenance Agency (OGROMA) yard, opposite Agbeloba Building on Quarry Road.

A bricklayer working at the site, who witnessed the incident, said the victims were working on three underground tankers, which were relocated from the government fuel dumps at the old secretariat.

It was gathered that firemen put out the fire quickly to enable rescuers retrieve  the victim’s body.

On the Ijebu-Ode accident,  the spokesman of the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said a Mack tanker, APP 81 XL, killed a man, Ahmed, when the truck fell on a Nissan space bus, KJA 901 BX.

Akinbiyi said the tanker driver, identified as Chinedu, is in police custody.

The victim’s remains have been collected by his family.
