    DHQ confirms 14 soldiers dead

Weekend’s clashes between Boko Haram insurgents and troops in Baga, Borno State, claimed the lives of 14 soldiers, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed yesterday. It said 30 others sustained injuries.

The DHQ however said that the fighting was still ongoing in Baga and that many insurgents had been mauled down.

A statement and a tweet by the Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade gave insight into the battle to reclaim Baga since Boko Haram invaded the fish town on January 3.

There had been claims and counter-claims on the actual situation in the troubled community.

While the Amnesty International alleged that more than 2,000 civilians might have died in the deadliest raid on Baga by Boko Haram, the DHQ said the actual figure of civilian casualties has not been creditably determined.

The tweet said: “We are fighting in Baga. We are   taking terrorists down; we are losing our soldiers too…”

But the statement was more specific on the situation of the war in Baga.

Olukolade said: “A total of 14 soldiers were killed in action during the attack, while over 30 who were wounded are now receiving medical attention. Most of those declared missing in action have also rejoined their unit in the ongoing reorganisation for further operations.

“Although several of the terrorists died in the course of the attack and efforts at repelling the assailants, the actual figure of civilian casualties is yet to be creditably determined as is being propagated in certain quarters.

“The Nigerian military has not given up on Baga and other localities where terrorists’ activities are now prevalent. Appropriate plans, men and resources are presently being mobilised to address the situation.

“The Nigerian component of the Multinational Joint Task Force which retreated from its Baga Headquarters last weekend and more of the troops are regrouping for necessary debriefing and briefing for subsequent missions.

“It is necessary to reassure Nigerians that the Nigerian Armed Forces and security agencies are capable of flushing out the terrorists from Baga and all parts of the nation’s territory where their activities are prevalent. No portion of Nigeria’s territory has been or will be conceded to terrorists.

“The use of all available resources within the armed forces will continue to be maximised to sustain the tempo of the counter-terrorism campaign towards containing and eradicating terrorism in the nation’s territory.

“The support and understanding of all partners and neighbouring countries will however continue to be utilised where available and relevant in the conduct of the mission and in line with existing agreement and understanding.”

In a separate statement last night, the DHQ said the interpretation of recent terrorists’ attacks by Amnesty International has vindicated the position of the military that troops never engaged in massacre of people in the town.

The DHQ said: “This interpretation of the recent terrorists attack on Baga is quite valid. You will recall that the military has maintained all through that the troops never engaged in any massacre in Baga as some activists and the media alleged in 2013.

“We have been insisting that such viciousness and barbarism were more typical of the terrorists’ pattern of operation than the action of the troops.

“Unfortunately however, some interest groups and terrorist sympathisers for whom it is more convenient continued to misinform the world, have kept attributing the evil to Nigerian troops.

“The attack on the town by the blood hounds and their activities since January 3rd, 2015, should convince well- meaning people all over the world that Boko Haram is the evil all must collaborate to end rather than vilifying those working to check them.

“Those who have found it more convenient to insist on labelling the Nigerian military with allegations of human rights abuse using Baga as a reference should note this development.

“Let us hope this will encourage them to begin placing blames where they belong. The priority of all our military action in this campaign has been the protection of our civilian population.”

The DHQ said more troops had been deployed in Damaturu to secure Yobe, the state capital.

Boko Haram insurgents had on Friday attacked Damaturu with the aim of seizing the town.

But the insurgents were successfully repelled by troops.

The DHQ confirmed that five soldiers were wounded in the counter-attacks on the insurgents.

It added:  “The terrorists had launched massive attack from different directions of the town on Friday evening, but troops were promptly mobilised to repel the attack that lasted the night, resulting in heavy casualty on the terrorists before the rest of them retreated.

“Weapons including IEDs and Rocket Propelled Grenades captured from the terrorists are being compiled while their dead as well as civilian casualties are yet to be determined.

“Pursuit of the fleeing terrorists is also ongoing while the five soldiers who were seriously wounded in the attack are being treated in the military medical facility.

“Although normalcy has been restored, the town is also being reinforced with more troops.”

  • Dokubo-Asari: Henry Okah wanted Jonathan dead since 2007

Dokubo-Asari: Henry Okah wanted Jonathan dead since 2007

Leader of the Niger-Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Ahajli Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, alleged that the plot to assassinate President Goodluck Jonathan by Henry Okah and his Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) was hatched before Jonathan became Nigeria’s president.

Dokubo-Asari, who spoke with reporters in Abuja at the weekend, also said it would be a painful decision for him to vote for the Rivers State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nyesom Wike, in next month’s elections.

He said the leaders of Niger-Delta, including Chief Edwin Clark, prevented Jonathan from speaking on the 2010 assassination attempt. The former militant leader noted that the president could no longer be deceived by leaders of the zone to maintain a silence on the matter.

He said: “For me, what the President said is belated. The President had known since 2007 that Henry Okah wanted to kill him. For not saying it, it is the fault of Ijaw leaders, including Clark, who have been saying hide this thing; sweep it under the carpet.

“And one day, the debris under the carpet will become too much that the carpet will be undulated. Now, it is undulated, the stench is coming out and the president could no longer hold it.

“He has now come out to say Henry Okah wanted to assassinate me, which was true”.

He explained that there were lots of clandestine activities by Okah in 2007 targeted at eliminating Jonathan when he was Bayelsa State governor because of his resistance to donate the state’s budget to him.

According to him, “Henry Okah wanted Goodluck Jonathan to pay him money. Go and read my write-up when I said “When Silence is not Golden” in 2007. I published a very lengthy Part One. Ijaw elders begged me not to reveal more in Part Two. It is ready, but I didn’t publish it because Chief Clark and others begged me not to publish it because I am revealing the secrets of Ijaw people. But I told them that this thing you people are doing will backfire.

“You are supporting evil. Tompolo and everybody were on me that I was revealing Ijaw’s secrets. I became their enemy and everything. If Henry Okah asks for money and you don’t give him, he attacks you. He asked Goodluck Jonathan when he was governor to share the budget and give him five per cent. Every month, five per cent of what they received must be given to them to service the boys. And Jonathan said No.

“Henry Okah invaded Government House with his boys, some of the people who are now claiming to support Jonathan invaded Government House, destroyed Government House. My people ran away with Goodluck. They went to Otueke, burnt down his country home in Otueke, thinking he was there. The governor ran.

“But there are people around him saying there must be unity among the ijaw people. If you recall, I am the only person who has been talking against Henry Okah. That man is a criminal. He is  nobody. He doesn’t have the power they think he has.”

  • Four shot dead over politician’s N50,000 gift

Four shot dead over politician’s N50,000 gift

Four persons were reportedly shot dead when hoodlums clashed over a N50,000 cash gift by a politician in Mosafejo, Amukoko in Lagos, at the weekend.

    Those injured are in hospital.

The politician was said to have given the money in appreciation of his constituents’ support.

The trouble started when the hoodlums disagreed over how to share the cash.

A group threatened to cause trouble when those with the money insisted on taking a larger share.

It was gathered that a similar incident occurred last year when one person was killed over a N20,000 cash gift by the politician.

A resident, who pleaded for anonymity, said one of those killed was a member of the vigilant group simply identified as Omoba.

The source said Omoba, who resided at Opeleye Street, Ajegunle went to the scene to restore peace but was caught in the cross fire.

The hoodlums, it was learnt trailed another man to an Indian hemp joint on Ogungbe Street and also killed him, the other two were killed at Ajenifuja Street in Amukoko.

A resident, Tunde Saheed, advised the politician to look for other ways of rehabilitating the hoodlums and stop giving them money.

“If not for poverty, would they have descended so low?. If he really wants to assist them he should find other means. He should not allow his gesture to cause death in this community again because it is wrong”, he said.

A source at Amukoko Police Station confirmed that the matter was being investigated.

  • 20 feared dead in Taraba attack

There appears to be no end to ethnic and religious crises in Southern Senatorial District of Taraba State.

About 20 people were feared dead yesterday in an attack on Tunari, Wukari. Many were injured and several houses torched.

It was learnt that Fulani insurgents suspected to be from Plateau State attacked the community around 10am and unleashed violence on residents for several hours.

President of the Youths of Vision, Wukari branch, Tsa-Asen Agbu said the attackers struck when majority of the residents – largely Christians, were in church.

Agbu, a lawyer, alleged that the attackers were out to kill and reduce the Christian population in Taraba, adding: “Why Taraba South? Why are the attacks always directed at Jukun and Tiv Christian communities?”

He urged President Goodluck Jonathan to declare a state of emergency in Taraba.

Residents said over 20 persons were killed. Police spokesman Joseph Kwaji confirmed the attack but said he did not know the casualty figure.

He said policemen had been drafted to the area to restore peace.

Ita, who is still in a state of shock as he recounted his last moments with the late Effiom to SportingLife, said the one time Pelican Stars coach was in sound condition, the day before he fell sick.  “On Saturday evening we spoke extensively on the Nigeria vs Congo match which he told me he watched on TV and sounded very well over the phone. He analysed the game with me  and spoke so well. I never knew that was going to be my last meeting with him,”said Ita.

Effiom, who only retired a few months back from the state sports council after several years as head coach of Pelican Stars, a period the club won all its league and FA Cup titles from 1995 to 2000.

In 2007, Effiom was again called upon by the football authorities to coach the senior team, Super Falcons to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in China, the same year. Unfortunately the team crashed out in the group stage. The team’s ouster was blamed on him by the NFF following a protest from the players to boycott matches over the non-payment of their allowances.

  • Rivers POWA puts smiles on widows’ faces

Rivers POWA puts smiles on widows’ faces

The Rivers State chapter of the Police Officers’ Wives Associtaion (POWA) has put smiles on the faces of widows of dead policemen and the indigent, writes JUDE ISIGUZO

THe association has existed for 50 years. But, for many at the event,  never in its history has the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) made widows and indigent members in  Rivers State so happy.

POWA’s Chairperson, Mrs Chinyere Ogunsakin, on August 8, launched an empowerment scheme for members.

The scheme is developed to give economic sustenance to wives and widows of policemen.

About 120 women and youths have received training and empowerment in  various trades like tailoring, cosmetology, bead/hat making and catering/hotel management.

Some were also trained in events management and general business development. The trainees were presented with a certificate.

Items, such as industrial grinding machines, were distributed and accommodation was also secured for some widows of fallen policemen.

Mrs Ogunsakin expressed joy at the success of the pilot scheme of the project, adding that the objective of providing socio-economic support and empowerment to Police officers’ wives and their wards was something worth doing.

She said: “We want to give a helping hand to our trained women to enable them start on their own journey to fulfilment and financial liberation.”

She shared her vision of forming a cooperative for the beneficiaries who take the empowerment seriously to obtain loans from corporate organisations.

The beneficiaries could not contain their joy, as they danced around the chairperson to express how they felt.

The widows, who were provided with accommodation, could not hold back their tears of joy. They thanked and prayed for their chairperson and her family.

Mrs Ogunsakin was moved to tears as the widows clustered around her, went on their knees and began proclaiming blessings on her and her family.

One of the widows Mrs. Theresa Israel, wife of a late Inspector, in tears, commended this initiative as the best attempt at empowerment by any POWA administration.

She said: “This is the first time we are witnessing this kind of a thing where the widows who have been forgotten are remembered for good and given hope. God must bless our mummy.”

Mrs. Janet Agoreyo, another beneficiary, said she was so glad that she could comfortably say that the days of begging were over, adding that she had been placed on a pedestal to aid her husband in providing for the family.

Mrs. Constance Mbajunwa, another beneficiary, recounted how she had been through hard times and thanked Mrs Ogunsakin for striking all the right notes in just seven months of being in Rivers State.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Alkali Shaba, who represented the Commissioner of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin, commended the POWA chairperson and her executive for the initiative, adding that it was a morale booster to the entire Police Force.

He also said the Rivers State Police command would do everything to support POWA.

  • Who wants Buhari dead?

    Who wants Buhari dead?

Since the bomb blast in Kaduna State which apparently targeted former Head of State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari, there has been a constant stream of comments, perspectives and questions. Some said the attack was just another act of terrorism, a familiar occurrence, especially in the North, and that it was neither politically motivated nor an attempt to muzzle the opposition, of which the retired infantry officer is a key figure.

Still, the question won’t go away. Who wants Gen. Buhari dead and why?

The General was unhurt. His aides were injured, treated and discharged, although many innocent passersby died.

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, another prominent figure and uncompromising critic of terrorists, also escaped death in the other Kaduna blast and has since gone to Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj.

It was not the first time that Islamic religious leaders were targeted by members of the Boko Haram group during the period of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, in 2012, was rounding off his Tafsir at the Sultan Bello Mosque when the terrorists went for him. Luckily, it was those carrying the explosive meant for him and probably his congregation who rather died when the bomb exploded near his house. He had taken a different route to the mosque.

While Sheikh Bauchi came away unhurt, those who attended his Tafsir lecture at the Murtala Square in Kaduna were not that lucky. The bomb targeting him exploded when the worshippers were returning from the event, killing over 25 of them instantly. Many others were seriously wounded, some maimed for life.

The suicide who went after Buhari in the Kawo area of the metropolis, chose a busy spot to detonate the explosive and may have followed the retired General from his house.

The APC leader reportedly said his his assailants made several attempts to overtake him and maybe gain access his car.

The explosion, which Buhari said was an attempt to assasinate him, was coming barely two days after he issued a statement accusing the government of launching an offensive against the opposition parties in the country.

Following the explosion, some angry youths started hurling stones at security agents  while others wielding sticks started marching towards the Government House, believing that the government was responsible for the attack on General Buhari.

Kaduna State Governor Mukthar Ramalan Yero said in a statement that the two explosions were clear manifestation of the resolve by ‘agents of darkness’ to soak the land with the blood of innocent people for no just cause.

He said “enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives. This blast, coming in the Holy month is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life.”

Gen. Buhari’s immediate reaction to the incident was that the explosion was targeted at him and he had cause to believe so.

He said “I am personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura. The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast-moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car, but was blocked by the escort vehicle. We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram into my car. He instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy. Unfortunately, when I came out of my vehicle, I saw bodies littered around. They were innocent people going about their daily business, who became victims of mass murder. Thank God for His mercy, I came out unhurt, but with three of my security staff sustaining minor injuries. They have since been treated in hospital and discharged.”

He said while receiving Governor Yero at his residence a day later that the nation can actually deal with the insecurity posed by activities of the Boko Haram group. The General has been very critical of activities of the insurgents, especially after the Nyanya bombing. In a widely published article, he condemned their activities.

He said: “My heart breaks every time I take to this platform to offer condolences in this tormenting season of seemingly endless violence. I understand that it is difficult for the government to prevent every terrorist attack, but we can always do more to protect our defenceless citizens by boosting our intelligence and counterterrorism capabilities. Our security and stability cannot be conditioned on any ideology or partisan agenda. Every Nigerian reserves the right to his own security, to his own freedom and dignity, and no amount of terrorist blackmail can make us surrender these. May God unite our hearts as we confront this evil.”

During Governor Yero’s visit, Gen. Buhari reportedly recalled the first statement he made on Boko Haram. “I’m  sure that the first statement I made about 18 months ago is on record. I said no religion advocates what is happening. So, basically, it is no case of religion; it is neither ethnic, when they kill children in schools in the Northeast, they kill teachers, they burn churches, they burn mosques, they burn motor parks, they burn markets. Where is religion there? Where is ethnicity there? This is terrorism and I hope the government will come to grips with it. Nigeria is capable of dealing with this; we dealt with the civil war, for 30 months, we fought and we kept Nigeria one and, God willing, we are going to keep Nigeria one. I commiserate with the families of those that died, because this thing was ignited at exactly where my car was almost side-by-side with this thing. I came out, there was blood on my dress. I did not know how it came about because I did not have a scratch myself, but dead bodies all over the place. The security tried to move me to the other side and we just got one of the vehicles passing and they brought me home. I hope the law enforcement agencies and the chief executives of the states will succeed in securing the country”.

Before the twin explosions in the metropolis, two people were killed in cold blood in their homes by unknown gunmen. The first was the General Manager of a Kaduna-based newspaper, the New Democrat, while the other was a lecturer with the state School of Health Technology.

The Nation was informed that this was a clear indication that the Boko Haram members were around in ten states and preparing to attack.

Many believe the explosion was the ruling government’s attempt to silence the opposition. But civil rights crusader and stalwart of the APC in Kaduna State, Mallam Shehu Sani warned against attributing the act to the government or even President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said that “the multiple bombings in Kaduna and Kano which targeted Muhammadu Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi stands unreservedly condemned. The assassination attempt once again demonstrated the annihilating danger faced by the Nigerian state. The attack, if successful, could have triggered a serious civil unrest which the architect must have intended to achieve.

“The ongoing insurgency and the overall security situation in the country should be a matter of concern to all. With the attack on these two prominent Nigerians, it’s evidently clear now that we are in a situation where everyone is vulnerable.”

He argued that there is an urgent  need for national unity and solidarity in tackling the menace, adding that “violence will continue as long as there is no exigent national cohesion to combat it; political bickering and blame game between the Government and the opposition and warmongering between the North and the South helps in sustaining the violence. It’s utterly wrong for the ruling party to ascribe the ongoing insurgency to the opposition without any iota of proof to that and it’s utterly false for anyone to concoct conspiracy theory that  links President Jonathan or the Federal Government to attacks that clearly and evidently have the hallmark of the insurgents. We have a crisis at hand and a historic challenge to address it. These are special moments in the history of our nation which appeals to our conscience and concern and needs our convergence. The ill wind of violence is threatening to uproot the standing pillar that upholds our national flag; we must all lend our hands and defy these digusting forces. In the crisis we find ourselves, what will matter most to posterity is not the individual opinion we hold about it but the collective position we took about it. When a nation’s faith is tested by crisis, it must be found strong if that nation is to survive. Each bomb explosion should generate a wave of patriotism to extinguish its motive and detonate its essence.”
