Sundowns debut: Uzoenyi waits on SA Embassy

Premier Soccer League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, will begin the defense of their title today against Maritzburg United without their new recruit, Ejike Uzoenyi.

The 26-year-old is still holed up in Enugu awaiting the outcome of his work permit application to the South African embassy.

Except the process is fast tracked, the Nigeria international might remain in his homeland until late August.

Based on the new South African immigration system that came into effect few months ago, it takes a minimum of six weeks to process a similar work application.

”I submitted my application after the World Cup, I mean after the final game between Germany and Argentina. We have been told that the embassy can call me at any time to pick up the document, but I’v not heard from them yet.

”For now, I’m keeping fit by training with my former team, Enugu Rangers,” Ejike Uzoenyi told SL10.ng.

Mamelodi Sundowns  are patiently waiting for the African Nations Championship top player to join the club, and they have no immediate plans to loan him out despite the bloated foreigners in the squad.

Uzoenyi has penned a four-year deal with the Brazilians, tying him to the Pretoria based side till  2018.

It is the first Premier League goal this term for Essien who left Nembe without hitting target.

“I’m happy to join Lobi Stars and it’s a good start for me. I want to continue this way,” he said to supersport.com.

  • Solanke makes Chelsea debut

    Solanke makes Chelsea debut

Anglo Nigeria Chelsea 18-year-old forward, Dominic Solanke, made his debut for the Chelsea first team on Wednesday, as the Blues played their first pre-season game thrashing Wycombe Wanderers 5-0.

Solanke, who finished as Chelsea’s youth team top-scorer last season, was introduced at the start of the second half and instantly became a threat to the Wycombe backline.

Though he didn’t grab a goal, he twice came close to scoring with a shot that narrowly miss nestling in the net with Goalkeeper, Mark Ingram, beaten.

Solanke tried to lob the goalkeeper in the 82nd minute but his effort lacked the height to beat Ingram.

  • Ajayi to make Arsenal debut

    Ajayi to make Arsenal debut

19 year-old ex-Nigeria Under-20 invitee Semi Ajayi is in line for his Arsenal first team debut after being listed in the match day squad for Arsenal’s first pre-season game against Boreham Wood.

Ajayi joined Arsenal last season from Charlton Athletics but despite training with the main team on so many occasions last season he failed to make the match day squad for any of the Gunners game in the entire tournament they played.

However, Ajayi’s big chance to impress manager Arsene Wenger was presented to him following the absence of the club’s regular centre backs who were all involved at the World Cup with Metesacker’s Germany up against Argentina in the final on Sunday.

He made quite an impression last season on his debut for Arsenal B team, scoring with a header in a victory over Blackburn Rovers before turning in an impressive display against West Bromwich Albion at Emirates Stadium in the next fixture prompting the coaching staff to offer him a two-year contract at the club.

Tip to pair with returning Spanish centre back Ignasi Miquel in today’s game, Ajayi still needs to fend off competition from another Spanish youngster Julio Pleguezuelo rumoured to be named as the club’s fourth-choice centre-back for the new season, at just 17 years of age.

Last season Ajayi spent time on loan at Conference side Dartford last season and featured for Norwich City during pre-season prior to being offered a trial with Arsenal and played four friendly games for Nigeria Under-20 team before the World Youth Championship 2013 in the UAE.

He is still eligible for England as he was born in the country to Nigerian parents.

  • Retail Council makes debut

The contribution of the retail market to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to increase, with the launch of the Retail Council of Nigeria (RCN). TONIA ‘DIYAN reports.

In developed economies the composition of organised retail is much larger than the unorganised. Therefore, it would be safe to presume that economic growth has a direct correlation to increase in organised retail.

Everyone in business has challenges, and are to seek solutions. Therefore, it is time for retail businesses in Nigeria to fight their battle or have their platform to find solutions to certain issues through a  global initiative – the Retail Council of Nigeria.

The council seeks to make the retail business nore organised in line with global best practices – making the market place organised. The idea is to formalise the market and create a boost in the sector, impact positively on the growth of the economy. The strategy will promote modern retailing in Nigeria, such that it can contribute its share to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP); and facilitate the development of associated/allied sectors of the economy; provide a platform for networking and disseminating useful information and knowledge to members and the public. It will also create a database of members and encourage members to adopt the right values, imbibe international best practices, wholesome practices, and good corporate governance in the conduct of their business.

The  Retail Council  would encourage informal retailers move to the next level and become formal . It  will operate an open membership system where issues would be collectively tabled to the Government and to various policy makers. The council also has an objective to create employment and bring in Government standard. Above all, it has the responsibility to be accountable to the consumer.

This is a rarely policy that should drive everyone. It is a journey that needs an enabling environment, policy and infrastructural support, where the young aspiring trader is encouraged to become an advance retailer. Nigerians still aspire experience, desire human contact, desire smile and ‘the come and buy something from me attitude’.

The Banks are not left out in all of these, they are also interested in supporting the retail business, but they cannot do so if it is not organised. There are some banks that do not have enough capital and structure to do business, but are excited to be part of this movement. Such banks have promised to encourage their customers to become members of the council and have their businesses organised.

The initiators of the council are legacy minded people who are ready to show their knowledge to the young and upcoming. There is a saying that goes; ‘the young shall grow.’ But how will the young grow when the elders are folding their hands?

Akin Onifade is a retailer at the Balogun Market on Lagos Island. He doesn’t know much about organised retailing even after 12 years in the business. All he does is to refill his shop whenever his stock runs out.

He was told recently of how he can expand his business and be organised. He is, however, skeptical that he might not make as much sales as he used to in the open market. He is also afraid that he might lose his customers.

For Akin, the open market is the best place for him to make a living and relate well with customers.

“How can I benefit from this initiative?” he asked.

Retail market is not about shops only, but every company that has relationship with consumers, including banks, telecommunications, manufacturing, tourism and consultancy firms. The council has an objective to improve the efficiencies of the value chain, reduce wastage, and increase revenue, thereby lowering inflation.

The boom in the retail market would give an impetus to the Information Technology (IT) industry, tourism and banking.

Across the globe, retail employs 17.1 per cent of the workable population and in the United States, it accounts for 14 per cent.

Organised retailing supports the development of various sectors  and assists to conserve foreign exchange.

In Nigeria, it would increase the revenue base for the government, ensure compliance with international standards, and generate employment.

In the past, governments at the Federal and states levels  had challenges collecting taxes from the unorganised retail market, but with the organised retail market this would not be a problem.

According to Asiwaju Onafowokan, a member of trustees of the Retail Council of Nigeria, the body has the target to formulate, facilitate, and propagate practices and processes in line with international best practices. This, he believes, would lead to increased consumption, a boost in production, employment generation, and, ultimately, the growth of the economy.

Haresh Keswani, a member of Board of Trustees of the Retail Council of Nigeria, said organised retail is  related to economic growth. He said the United States and Britain have organised retail which contributes over 80 per cent each to economic growth. In Japan and India, the organised retail market contributes about 66 per cent and 10 per cent to economic growth but Nigeria receives only three per cent due to unorganised retail market.

Describing her experience over the years as unpleasant, she said she was glad that she had lived her dream. “Every journey starts with God. I started in 2005. It looks like as if it would be a long journey. There were so many challenges. One wanted to use a song to praise God. I saw God’s hand, though there were some distractions.”

On her message, she said: ‘’The message in the song is about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He left his throne to save us. This was an expression of love. We are celebrating Jesus Christ.”

On the hit track, she also said it is about the love of God. “I was not a Christian before. My encounter with God was something else. He has being my strength and source of encouragement, “ she said, adding: “ I enjoy worshipping God.”

Ola, who is President, Sounds of Many Waters Band, berated some gospel musicians for not doing a good job, saying they lack originality and that they are too worldly.

In the six-tracker are Praise Medley, exceeding Grace, Miracle, Orin to du, Everything and Arugbo Ojo. They are mixtures of English and Yoruba. At the event, Ola, who sang ‘Ojiroghene we na yo’; Ebube, Ebube … and I am saying You are good Jehovah was applauded by guests for her dexterity and originality. They also praised her artistic acumen, which she displayed when she marched in like a regent flanked by two kids. A representative of the Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor, Soji Kuforiji, described the CD as good. “I was moved by the songs and I pray that you will go from height to height,” he said.

Emmanuel is not in a hurry to release another CD soon, but “I see my band going out to play and praise God in worship.”

An RCCG Zonal Pastor, Akin Laoye, praised Emmanuel for her consistency, saying since he knew her, she has always been dedicated to the music ministry as a chorister and that since 1986, when she had the vision to be a musician, she has kept to it. He prayed for her and urged her to remain steadfast and committed to her career.

He thanked the Men’s Fellowship of the church for their support to her over the years, which led to her releasing the album.

Pastor (Mrs) Wunmi Agunbiade, who preached at the event, noted that God is all-powerful, all-knowing and that is why He is the Almighty (Eledumare) as the title of the CD indicates. Quoting from the Holy Bible, she enjoined guests to take their problems to Him in prayer with the faith that He would answer them.
