Deeper Life denies report on US theft, genocide denial by Kumuyi

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has debunked a viral online report claiming that its General overseer, Pastor William Kumuyi, accused the United States of attempting to plunder Nigeria’s natural resources and dismissed claims of Christian genocide in the country.

The story, published by an online platform identified as Ibom Focus, alleged that Pastor Kumuyi made the statements during a press briefing in Lagos.

The reports rapidly gained traction on X, sparking widespread outrage and debate.

In an official statement on Monday on Pastor Kumuyi’s verified X account, the ministry described the report as “a total fabrication” and “the figment of the imagination of its authors.”

The church emphasised that Pastor Kumuyi’s ministry remains strictly apolitical, focused exclusively on preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Condemning the publication as “malicious,” the ministry warned individuals or groups seeking to misrepresent the pastor or drag him into political discourse.

The statement reads: “The Deeper Christian Life Ministry @dclmhq condemns in the strongest terms the malicious and entirely false news report circulated by a faceless platform which goes by the name of “Ibomfocus”

“The story with the headline: “America is Trying to Steal our Natural Resources; There is No Christian Genocide in Nigeria, says Pastor Kumuyi” is a total fabrication and the figment of the imagination of its authors.

“Pastor Kumuyi did not at any time address a press conference or make the aforementioned statement in Lagos. He has been away from Nigeria for a considerable length of time, holding programmes in the Oceania region and the Far East.

“Besides, Pastor Kumuyi is well known for focusing entirely on preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He does not dabble into politics, as the false story mentioned above seemed to suggest.

“The Ministry warns all those bent on mischief by seeking to drag our General Superintendent into politics, or fabricating stories in his name, to desist from such venture. In the future, any such activity may attract action”.

The clarification comes amidst the recent threat by US President Donald Trump of military intervention in Nigeria.

  • Deeper Life battles Lagos council over illegal demolition of Surulere Church property

Deeper Life battles Lagos council over illegal demolition of Surulere Church property

In the heart of Yaba, Lagos, a legal battle is unfolding that could set a precedent for the protection of religious institutions from arbitrary actions by local authorities. The Deeper Life Bible Church, is fighting to reclaim a piece of land at no 36 Aina St, Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos State, it claims was unlawfully demolished on May 27 by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

It will be recalled that Surulere Local Council reportedly began laying foundations for shops on the site immediately after the demolition. This prompted condemnation from church officials, who described the action as unjust and disruptive to their congregation, now left without a place of worship.

Speaking to journalists after a crucial hearing at the Lagos High Court, Sabo on Thursday, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Taiwo Kupolati lead counsel to the church, expressed frustration over what he described as the local council’s “complete breakdown” of peaceful negotiation efforts.

“We were invited today for the hearing of the suit concerning the demolition of our church property in Surulere,” Kupolati said. “Recall that during the last adjournment, the council had sent a letter offering a ₦10 million full and final compensation—not just for the demolition, but for the entire land.”

But the Church, through its legal team, rejected the offer, deeming it not only unreasonable but dismissive of the value of both the land and the structure erected on it. In a counter-response, the Church had proposed a joint valuation exercise by experts from both parties to assess the actual cost of the land and reconstruction, or alternatively, to be given a replacement plot within the same locality.

    No response ever came.

“That silence told us everything we needed to know,” Kupolati told the press. “Today, we informed the Court that the peace process had completely broken down.”

He noted that instead of engaging in dialogue, the local government returned to court with a formal defence and an application for an extension of time—signaling their readiness to contest the case rather than settle.

Rather than resist the delay, the Church’s legal team chose not to oppose the extension. “We want to move quickly to trial,” Kupolati said. “To reclaim our land and seek adequate compensation for the illegal demolition.”

In a significant development, the Justice  granted all prayers brought by the Church’s legal team. These include a restraining order barring the local council from carrying out any form of development on the disputed land, as well as an order compelling the police—specifically the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2—to ensure security for Deeper Life Bible Church members as they continue to worship or carry out any legitimate activity on the site.

Kupolati emphasized that the court’s ruling was clear: “From now on, the local government is restrained from accessing the land or interfering with the Church’s operations on it.”

He further stated that the Court reaffirmed its fundamental role—to protect lives and property—and warned the local government not to disregard its authority.

A fresh twist has emerged in the ongoing legal battle over the land as counsel representing the 3rd, 4th, and 5th defendants alleged that the land was not properly acquired by the church.

During court proceedings, the lead counsel, Mr. Samuel Honbu, argued that the land in question, which has been occupied by the church for over 17 years, belongs to the Alagbasa family. He claimed that the church did not purchase the land from the rightful owner—one of Alagbasa’s sons, Ajorin Abayomi under whose portion the church reportedly falls.

Honbu, further stated that the issue had previously reached the Supreme Court, with a judgment delivered on the rightful ownership. He asserted that the land was originally part of a larger estate shared among Alagbasa children and that the documents tendered in court by the church allegedly belong to a different family with no land holdings in the vicinity.

Asked to respond, Kupolati explained that while the new party had filed a statement of defence, it lacked accompanying evidence—a crucial flaw.

“We have seen their arguments, but until they bring concrete proof, it remains unsubstantiated,” Kupolati said. “As of now, the court’s position is that the Deeper Life Bible Church remains in control of the land, and with security protection in place, we can continue our ministry without fear.”

He added that if the new party believes they have ownership claims, the trial phase would be the appropriate forum to present evidence. Until then, the current court ruling stands.

Thursday’s hearing underscores the broader implications of this case—about due process, property rights, and the relationship between local authorities and religious institutions. For the Deeper Life Bible Church, this isn’t just about buildings or compensation.

“This is about justice,” Kupolati concluded. “This is about ensuring that those who serve God and community are not treated like squatters on their land. The law must protect the sanctity of worship.”

As the legal proceedings move toward full trial, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see whether justice, indeed, will be served.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, has said that the state government had no issues with the church and had no hand in the demolition.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has always promoted fairness. We hold Deeper Life Church in high regard. The state government did not order the demolition,” he said.

Deeper Life condemns demolition of properties in Lagos, alleges harassment

The Deeper Life Bible Church has strongly condemned the demolition of some of its properties across Lagos State, accusing government agencies of targeting the church without following due process.

In a statement issued by its legal counsel, Nojim Tairu & Co., the church described the demolitions as a form of “systematic harassment” and a violation of its rights as a religious institution.

According to the statement, church buildings in Yaba, Olorunishola, and Lawanson were pulled down by different government bodies, including the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and the Surulere Local Government Authority.

“The Deeper Life Bible Church, a long-standing pillar of faith and community service in Lagos and beyond, strongly condemns the ongoing unjust and unwarranted actions by the Lagos State Government and its agencies,” the statement read.

The church expressed concern over what it described as “an alarming pattern of hostility,” including threats of demolition and restrictions on its operations.

“These actions violate fundamental rights, threaten religious freedom, and undermine the rule of law,” the statement continued. “We call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently investigate these developments.”

Reaffirming its commitment to peace and lawfulness, the church urged civil society, religious bodies, human rights groups, and the international community to stand with it in what it termed an act of religious oppression and disregard for property rights.

“As a church committed to uplifting society through spiritual guidance and humanitarian service, we will not be silenced,” the statement added.

  • Deeper Life partners CAN, PFN to train church leaders

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), is organising a one-day training summit for church ministers.

The event, tagged Ministers’ Development and Networking Summit, will hold on March 27 at the DCLM headquarters, Gbagada, Lagos with the theme: “Building the builders.”

The organisers, including DCLM General Superintendent W. F. Kumuyi, the Chairman of CAN in Lagos, Apostle Alexander Balogun and Chairman of PFN in Lagos, Bishop Shola Ore, stated this at a media parley in Gbagada yesterday.

They expressed hope that the summit, expected to hold quarterly, will afford leading church fathers to pass on their experiences to and prepare the younger generation to lead the church in Nigeria.

The Summit will feature “seminars, workshops and inspiring messages plus excellent opportunities for ministerial interface and networking.”

Balogun, who spoke on behalf of the organisers, said: “The summit is a non-denominational forum that provides church ministers a rare opportunity for personal development and ministerial empowerment through expository studies, practical training, information sharing and networking.

“Expected participants are Pastors and Leaders of Churches and Gospel Ministries.”

He thanked Kumuyi, the convener of the summit, “whose all-round ministry has, for decades, been a huge blessing to countless number of Christians and Gospel Ministers across church denominations and countries.”

Balogun added: “The vision for the Ministers’ Development and Networking Summit came from him and I have no doubt that he heard from God, our Father.

“Indeed, this is not the first attempt he has made in the quest to have Gospel Ministers trained and developed irrespective of their denominational background. But this one is huge and unique in the sense that it is a vision shared by the entire membership of CAN.

“It is our hope that the deliverables from this platform will play a catalytic role in the revival of the entire body of Christ and lead the Church of Christ in the State to higher heights.”

According to him, the summit timely and would “foster the much needed love and unity in the body of Christ which in turn will create a more enabling environment for meaningful and effective evangelisation.”

  • ‘Deeper Life retreat promises new dawn’

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, has said this year’s Easter retreat promises a new era of great blessings.

The retreat begins today all over the world. It will end on Easter Sunday.

Announcing the holding of the retreat through satellite on Monday, Pastor Kumuyi urged members to attend the three- day annual event, which promises manifold spiritual and physical blessings.

He enjoined them never to permit anything, however desirable, to hinder them from receiving what God would do in their lives.

Pastor Kumuyi said the retreat offers an opportunity for getting even with God and preparing every heaven-bound saint to keenly await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He advised members to invite those outside the fold of God’s kingdom to attend, saying God’s blessings await those who heed His entreaty to return to Him in penitence and repentance.

The Easter retreat is an annual programme of the church. It holds in all local governments of the country, in nearly 50 African countries and the rest of the world. The theme of this year’s retreat is: “Heirs of His Kingdom”.

  • Joy as Deeper Life’s projects change lives in Gbagada

In a bid to end indiscriminate parking on the road by worshippers, the Deeper Life Bible Church has constructed a multi-level car park near its new church in Gbagada. It also built a multi-million naira bridge to aid smooth traffic movement around the axis as part of its corporate social responsibility, reports JOSEPH JIBUEZE

It is not unusual to find roads around major churches being blocked during religious services. For residents, movement becomes tortuous. Such churches become a nuisance to communities in which they are located.

To avoid such a scenario, the Deeper Christian Life Ministry is taking steps to ensure that residents of Gbagada in Lagos do not experience difficulties when it opens its new church edifice.

It has commissioned a bridge on Oduwaiye Street in Gbagada, which was constructed by Julius Berger.  The bridge was solely financed by the church.

It also opened an ultra-modern four-level underground car park designed to accommodate no fewer than 600 vehicles.

Worshippers would pass under the bridge from the car park to the church, while other road users would pass through the bridge.

At briefing in Lagos, the Project Architect, Pastor Kayode Dada, who represented the General Superintendent Pastor William Kumuyi, said the car park was designed to take worshippers “completely out of the road.”

He said the church has procured 50 brand new buses, and plans to get more.

The aim, he said, is to encourage members to attend worship by buses rather than coming in their own cars, in order to aid traffic management around the area.

“The reason for flying the bridge across Oduwaiye Street is so that we can have the worshippers pass under the bridge, and the community can easily use the bridge. The aim is to minimise both human and vehicular traffic.

“We expect to have quite a lot of worshippers, so we felt the best thing is to take them completely out of the road. So, there won’t be any pain to motorists in the whole of Gbagada. With that, the anticipated vehicular traffic would be minimised,” Dada said.

He said the first three levels of the car park would accommodate 555 cars, while the last level was strictly for buses.

“The church has procured 50 buses, and will get more. We want to encourage our members to come by buses to reduce the number of cars coming for worship in Gbagada. We’re accommodating 76 buses in the bus park,” he said.

Dada said the car park was the first of kind in Nigeria by a church because it was designed in line with valley-like terrain.

“We were able to go down because already there was a valley. So, we pushed it inside to create space underneath, without disturbing the adjacent roads. And you can’t go too high otherwise you will erase the elevation of the church.

“So, the bow-like shape of the land gave room to what we have and the lord led us to see that it’s easy to carve out that. We chose to put the bus park up to have more space for cars down,” Dada said.

The the traffic lights at both ends of the bridge, he said, were installed by the church to further manage vehicular movement in the axis. He said with better management and organisation, heavy traffic can be tackled.

“The church went into such heavy, huge investment to make sure there is sanity around this place and that residents will be comfortable,” he said.

Dada praised the Lagos State Government for its support in granting the necessary approvals, without which he said the projects would not have run smoothly.

“Various agencies like Ministry of Works and Infrastructure worked with us to get the bridge and car park done, supervised the work and monitored their quality. We need thank the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Ministry of the Environment for their support,” he said.

The Premises Manager, Emmanuel Okoye, said the bridge and the traffic lights were part of the church’s corporate social responsibility. The bridge is 140 meters.

The car park, he said, is equipped with fire systems and a restaurant, among others.

“It’s a two-way bridge. The day it was commissioned, a large crowd was praising God and was really glad with what has been done. From their own testimony, they’re really happy with the church.

“Before the bridge was built, many of the roads were bad. If there was a major programme by the church or by another church down the road, because of so many cars parking on the road, those living in the area were affected. It becomes a nuisance.

“As a church that lives peaceably with all men, you have to do whatever is in your power to ensure you’re not a nuisance to those around you. I think it’s part of good neighborliness,” he said.

He said the church was working on more access roads in the community around Gbagada.

“The communities are delighted. When you develop an area, it opens it up,” he said.

On whether a 600-capacity car park could adequately serve the church, he said: “The car park is just part of the church’s traffic management plan.”

He said the new church building would be opened soon.
