  • Sholiyi community residents appeal to Deeper Life on link bridges

Residents of Sholiyi community in Gbagada have appealed to authorities of the Deeper Life Bible Church to take necessary steps in easing traffic congestion in the area.

They asked the church to fulfil its agreement to build two link bridges in different areas of the community for traffic decongestion.

They spoke during a courtesy visit to the Lagos headquarters of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of Nation titles last week.

The cathedral billed for dedicated in April is expected to cover 6,200 square metres with an additional 16,244 square metres.

Secretary, Landlord/residents association Sholiyi community, Mr. Moses Eniayewu, said: “We are not asking Deeper Life Church to relocate from Gbagada community.

“What we want from them is to construct two bridges in two different areas in the community so as to ease traffic congestion.”

Eniayewu traced the traffic congestion in the area to 2009 when the church obtained approval from Lagos State Government to construct a 30,000 –seater auditorium.

“When we saw this, we initiated a meeting with them and told them that before going ahead, they should provide link bridges at Fred Omojole lcrescent and Ogundare Avenue.

“Initially they agreed but later they didn’t meet with us to discuss about it again.”

Eniayewu alleged when the community discovered the church was not ready to do as promised, the community wrote a letter to former Governor Babatunde Fashola who ordered stoppage of works until the bridges were constructed.

He added: “During the time of Fashola, there were some terms and conditions that they were expected to meet and because they couldn’t meet the conditions they had to stop work on the project. The church said it had no money to construct the bridges and we all kept quiet.”

Baale of Sholiyi, High Chief Solomon Olamiju, pointed out Ayodele Okeowo Street is the only road in and out of the community.

The street, he said, should be decongested in case of crisis and emergencies, pointing a recent fuel trailer breakdown caused a four-hour traffic girdlock.

“Even with the General Hospital located in the area, whenever there is emergency there is always a problem. Imagine a community with only one exit and Deeper Life Church is located at the beginning of the street.”

An official of the association, Olawale Olawuyi, added the church officials said there was no money for the bridges after a tour of Mende and Ifako to show outlets where they can construct them.

National secretary of the church, Pastor Jerry Asemota, told our correspondent there was never any intention to renege on the promise to build the bridges.

The one from Diya road-Sholiyi, he assured, will be completed in the next two months.

Asemota said the church, as a responsible entity, has been doing so much to alleviate flooding, traffic congestion and environmental challenges in the community.

According to him: “We have fixed the culverts on a link road from Banjoko Street to Atunrase crescent. We have tried to maintain the Omojole crescent road but residents park their vehicles on the street, making work impossible.

“Government officials have come and said there was nothing we promised that we have not done and construction of roads is not our responsibility.

“But we are working hard. We were meeting with the resident associations until three other communities came up and we decided we should meet them together.

“But the association in Sholiyi does not want that and I guess that is their main grouse with us.”

    Deeper Life Easter retreat

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, has assured all would-be participants at the church’s national Easter retreat of God’s special intervention in all spheres of their lives.

Kumuyi announced that the event with the theme: “Experiencing the Power of His Cross”, would take place from March 24 to March 27 at the Deeper Life Conference Centre (DLCC) on KM 48, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He added that the programme would take place simultaneously in all the state, region and local government camp grounds within Nigeria, other locations in Africa and beyond.

The cleric advised all people, especially Nigerians, not to be despondent to the point of seeking solutions to their problems in the wrong quarters.

The retreat, Kumuyi added, would be streamed live via satellite from DLCC to other centres in Nigeria, Africa, Europe, America and other continents.

“Like the previous editions, the event will meet the diverse needs of participants, as testimonies of supernatural deliverances have always been common place at the event,” he said.

  • The Deeper Life example

•This is how to be a godly neighbour

A common feature of contemporary life in many urban agglomerations across Nigeria is the regular congregation of large numbers of religious adherents at different locations in pursuit of one spiritual activity or the other. This is particularly true of Christian denominations particularly of the Pentecostal variety which, in recent years, have witnessed a huge surge in membership. These groups are characterised by the frequent organisation of various church programmes including crusades, revivals and sundry other events that attract enormous crowds. Large scale pedestrian and vehicular movements on such occasions inevitably have serious traffic, environmental and security implications.

Perhaps the best example of this situation is the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway axis where several mega Pentecostal churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Deeper Life Christian Ministries and the Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) hold diverse monthly activities with thousands of worshippers thronging their camps. The notorious traffic lock-downs that trap distressed commuters on that busy highway at such times have become a permanent feature of the road. Thousands of valuable man hours are lost with negative economic consequences. Commuters are exposed to stress-related health hazards. This is in addition to rendering them vulnerable to the antics of assorted criminals.

It is, of course, the primary responsibility of government to make necessary adjustments on the road such as construction of pedestrian crossings and flyovers to ease the burden of commuters arising from the intense religious activities along that stretch. However, it is also not out of place for the religious groups involved to contribute their own quota towards providing these facilities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. This is particularly as these denominations are known to have the financial capacity for such undertakings in a demonstration of Christ-like empathy for the plight of their fellow men and women.

Against this background, we wholeheartedly join the Lagos State government in commending the proposed construction of a multi-million Naira flyover in the Gbagada area of the state by the Deeper Life Christian Ministry. The project, which will also include a four-level motor park, is to contain anticipated challenges attendant on the imminent inauguration of the church’s new cathedral at Gbagada.

In demonstration of its seriousness of purpose, the Deeper Life Ministries recently got the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to organize a sensitisation programme to prepare the residents of Gbagada for the construction. Speaking on the occasion, the LASTMA Deputy Controller of Operation, Mr Phillip Ogunwale, said “The flyover upon completion will ease gridlock in this area as residents will no longer need to access the underground but move via the flyover. The gridlock that they normally experience, especially when they have programmes in the cathedral, will no longer be there. Those who have no business in the church will just pass through the bridge and go their way”.

We call on other religious bodies in Lagos and other parts of the country to emulate this worthy example of the Deeper Life Bible Church, which has demonstrated its sensitivity to the pains other people may suffer as its members exercise their constitutional right to freedom of worship. But we call on the Lagos State Government to heed the call of the Gbagada Community Development Association to quickly fix bad inner roads in the neighbourhood to ease the suffering of residents when work commences on the flyover.

Of course, CRS cannot be the burden of spiritual organisations alone. Secular groups, which do profitable business in an environment, must also give something back to the society. This is more so in a precarious financial situation in which government lacks the capacity to fund infrastructural development alone.

The retreat, which starts tomorrow will end on Sunday and help participants to operate on a higher spiritual frequency.

  • More horror sites’ll be discovered in Oyo, says church

More horror sites’ll be discovered in Oyo, says church

The Deeper Life Bible Church has said more kidnappers’/ritualists’ dens would be unraveled soon in Oyo State.

The church was reacting to the discovery of the Soka “forest of horror” in Ibadan, where dying men and women, human parts and decomposing bodies were found.

The church said the state is a holy land and is no hiding place for the evil.

The Oyo State Overseer of the church, Pastor Sola Odumosu, spoke with reporters yesterday on the church’s crusade coming up from Friday to Sunday at Kilometre 10 on the Ibadan/Oyo expressway.

The programme is tagged: “Signs and Wonders from the God of Miracles.”

Pastor Odumosu said: “Only righteousness exalts a nation. Sin is a reproach to any people and all evils in this state will be uncovered during our crusade.

“The solution to the ills in our nation is God and that is why Africa’s foremost evangelist and bible teacher, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, travels from one state to another with God’s message of hope and reconciliation to bring the people back to God.”
