  • Farmer jailed for defiling minor in Plateau

    An Upper Area Court in Kasuwan Nama, Jos North, has sentenced a 25-year-old farmer, Wundetenan Juna, to three years in prison for defiling an eight-year-old girl.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, did not give the convict an option of fine

    Juna pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of rape, and begged for leniency.

    Mohammed said the punishment would act as a deterrent to others.

    Prosecutor O.S. Ocho told the court the case was reported on February 2, at Mangu Divisional Police Headquarters, and transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department for investigation.

    He said the convict, a resident of Sabon Barki Gindiri, Mangu, lured the girl with N20 into an uncompleted building, and defiled her.

    Ocho said during medical examination, bruises were found in the victim’s private part.

    He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Penal Code.

  • Man accused of defiling minor

    A 35-year-old businessman, Tizhe Ayuba, was yesterday arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly for sexually molesting a six-year-old girl.

    Ayuba, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of defilement.

    Prosecutor Peace Chukwudi told the court the accused allegedly committed the offence on May 8, about 5 pm, at Aro community, Lekki, Lagos.

    She alleged the accused unlawfully defiled the girl.

    The offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate R. O. Davies remanded the accused in Ikoyi Prison and ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

  • 50-year-old, his teenage son arraigned for defiling minor

    A 50-year old man, Reuben Enosegbe, and his son, Destiny, aged 16, have been arraigned at the Evboriaria Magistrate Court  for allegedly defiling a 10-year old girl.

    They were said to have separately gave their victim N20 each time they have sex with her.

    The victim, who was in court told reporters how they had carnal knowledge of her on different occasions.

    Said she was always tempted with N20 during the countless times they defiled  her and that they always send her to buy recharge cards for them just to lure her into their house.

    Both father and son were charged on a one count-charge of forceful penetration.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The offence is  punishable under Section  218 of  the  Criminal Code cap 48 Volume 2 laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as  applicable in Edo State.

    Defence Counsel Nicholas Omobude applied for bail.

    Omobude promised that the accused persons will not jump bail.

    But Magistrate Efe Akhere said the matter would not be tried in his court.

    He transfered the case to a  family court where the accused bail will be considered upon resumption on April 21.

    Akhere  remanded the father to Oko Prison while his son was sent to the Children’s Remand Home at Ugbekun Quarters.

    Coordinator of Child Protection Network Mrs. Jennifer Ero assured that the cases will be pursued to logical conclusion.

     

  • Court jails pupils for defiling minor

    An Upper Area Court 3 sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, the Plateau State capital, has sentenced two pupils, Halidu Musa, 15 and Ayuba Shuaibu, 17, to six months’ imprisonment each for defiling a minor.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, said the light sentence on the four-count charge was meant to act as a deterrent to others.

    Mohammed said for a crime of criminal conspiracy, the accused would serve one year imprisonment or pay N3000 each, for a crime of trespass, they would serve one year imprisonment or pay a fine of N3000 each, for abduction, six months without a fine and for rape, six months without a fine.

    The prosecutor, A. Edwin, had told the court that the case was reported on February 6 to the state CID by Idris Ladan of Bokkos.

    He said the accused broke into the house at night, abducted the 12-year-old girl, took her to the bush and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

    ‘’The victim’s father heard her scream, ran into her room and found it empty. The neighbourhood looked for the girl that night, but surprisingly she came back home around 6 a.m., “Edwin said.

    The accused pleaded guilty and begged for mercy.

     

     

  • Court remands suspect for allegedly defiling minor

    An FCT High Court in Jabi yesterday ordered that a 25-year-old man accused by the police of allegedly defiling a nine-year-old at an IDP camp in Karmajiji, Airport road, Abuja be remanded in Kuje prison.

    Justice Charles Agbaza gave the order after Ekemgba Chisom was arraigned before him on a three-count charge of criminal offence.

    The suspect pleaded not guilty.

    Justice Agbaza adjourned the case till May 2.

    The police prosecutor, Mr. Donatus Abah, told the court that the accused allegedly defiled the minor on November 9, 2017 at an IDP camp in Karmajiji, on Airport road.

    He said the offences were punishable under sections 1 (2) and 5(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015.

    Abah said the offences were punishable under Section 285 of the Penal Code.

  • Man jailed two years for defiling minor

    A Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama yesterday sentenced a man, John Sunday, to two years imprisonment for defiling a six-year-old girl.

    The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge of rape, however, begged the court for mercy.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, rejected the convict’s plea for mercy, saying he deserved to be severely punished.

    Mohammed sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment without an option of fine, noting: “The sentence will act as a deterrent to others.”

    The prosecutor, E. Osho, had told the court that the case was reported on September 25, 2017 at the Nassarawa Gwon Police Station by the victim’s father, Mr. Makus Ishaya.

    He said it was later transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigative Department for discreet investigation and prosecution.

    The prosecutor said on the day the offence was committed, the girl was to meet her mother where she was milling corn about 3p.m., but she did not show up.

    “This prompted the mother to go and search for her daughter.

    “When she saw the girl, she said the accused lured her into an uncompleted building and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

    “She said the accused closed her mouth to prevent her from shouting, and also warned her not to tell anyone what transpired,’’ the prosecutor said.

    Osho said the offence contravened sections 282 and 283 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.

  • Man remanded for allegedly defiling minor

    An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday remanded a sexagenarian, Rafiu Olalekan, at Agodi Prison for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.

    The Magistrate, Modupeola Olagbenro, remanded Olalekan in prison pending the outcome of the case filed at the state Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), as her court does not have jurisdiction to try the case.

    She adjourned the case till January 10 for mention.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olalekan, a farmer from Abedo village, near Moniya, Ibadan, is facing a one-count charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor.

    Police prosecutor Oluseye Oyebanji told the court that the suspect, on November 20, about 8 pm, at Abedo village, allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl in his neighbourhood.

    He said Olalekan was alleged to have been having carnal knowledge of the victim mostly on her way back from school.

    “On the first day, the victim who lives with her grandmother, was running errand for her when Olalekan waylaid her and had carnal knowledge of her without her consent.

    “When the victim’s grandmother could not see her in time, she cried out. The victim was later seen with Olalekan in an uncompleted building,” Oyebanji said.

    He said the victim’s mother, Mrs. Olaide Kehinde, of Sapati, Yemetu, Ibadan, reported the offence to the police.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol .II Laws of Oyo State 2000.

  • Policeman arrested for allegedly defiling minor

    A policeman, who allegedly abducted a 14-year-old girl and defiled her, has been arrested in Anambra State.

    Briefing reporters yesterday at the police headquarters in Amawbia, Commissioner Garba Umar said justice must take its course.

    He said the policeman, Corporal Baru Garba, would be arraigned after investigations by the command.

    The girl was allegedly abducted by the policeman and detained for two days, during which he allegedly had carnal knowledge of her.

    Umar said: “The policeman has been nabbed and detained. He is facing internal disciplinary procedure. He will be arraigned as soon as investigation is concluded.

    “This is an isolated case. It does not reflect the core values and ethics of the Nigeria Police. Justice will not only be done, but seen to have been done.”

     

  • Man gets 14 years for defiling minor

    An Ekiti State High Court in Ado-Ekiti yesterday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Olowo Ismaila, to 14 years imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old girl.

    Justice Bamidele Omotoso held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

    He said the evidence before the court, including medical report, statement volunteered by the convict to the police and clothes worn by the victim on the day of the incident indicted Ismaila.

    The judge ruled that Ismaila’s sentence would start counting from April 14, 2016 when he was first incarcerated.

    The convict committed the crime on February 1, 2016 at Awolowo Street, Iluomoba-Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government.

    The prosecution counsel, Mr. Akinola Abon, called witnesses and tendered evidence to secure Ismaila’s conviction. The convict testified in his own defence.

    Abon hailed the judgment, saying it would act as a deterrent to others.

    The defence counsel, Mr. Babatunde Falade, said he would consult his client on the possibility of appealing.

  • Teenager gets bail for ‘defiling’ minor

    A teenager, Daniel Osikemuwe, who allegedly defiled a five-year-old girl, was yesterday granted reprieve by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    He was released on a N200,000 bail.

    Osikemuwe, 16, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of defilement.

    The prosecutor, Anthonia Osayande, told the court the offence was committed on June 23, at 13, George Close, Jibowu Road, U-turn, Abule Egba, Lagos.

    She alleged the accused, a neighbour to the girl’s parents, lured her to his room and defiled her.

    The offence contravened sections 137 and 407 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail at N200, 000, with two sureties.

    She said one of the sureties must be a relation of the accused, while the second should be a cleric or a community leader.

    Ipaye-Nwachukwu directed the sureties to provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    She ordered the accused to deposit two passport photographs with the registrar, and remanded him at the Correctional Institute for boys in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

    The chief magistrate adjourned the case till October 16, pending advice from the director of Public Prosecutions.
