  • Man in prison custody for ‘defiling’ minor

    An Akure Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State has ordered a middle-aged man, Godwin Jeremiah, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl.

    The accused was reportedly arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command after he allegedly committed the offence at Oke Emesho, Akure, on August 6.

    Jeremiah was said to have allegedly assaulted the girl by touching her private part.

    He was also alleged to have had carnal knowledge of her.

    Sources said the victim had been hospitalised, following injuries she allegedly sustained.

    The prosecution said the accused was facing a two-count charge of assault and having carnal knowledge of the minor.

    Jeremiah was said to have committed the offence contrary to and punishable under sections 360 and 221(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

    Police prosecutor Goodluck Okokon brought a remand application to the court and urged it to remand the accused in prison.

    Counsel to the accused, Olaniran Oladapo, prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him reply the application brought by the prosecutor.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. A.I. Ajayi, ordered the accused remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till Thursday.

  • Carpenter in court for ‘defiling’ minor

    A 32-year old carpenter, Samuel Ogan, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos State.

    The accused, who resides at 28b, Oloruntedo Street in Majiyagbe area of Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Rafael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 3 at his residence.

    Donny said the accused called the girl into his room that he wanted to send her on an errand.

    “He then shut the door, covered her mouth and had canal knowledge of her.

    “She later narrated what happened to her mother, who took the matter to the police station’’ he said

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias ordered that the accused be remanded in Kirikiri prison and adjourned the case till July 19.

  • Man arrested for defiling 2 years old girl

    Ebonyi State Police Command Thursday said that it has arrested a 30 year old man, Mr. Ama Inya Okoro for allegedly defiling a 2 year old girl in Unwana in Afikpo North local Government Area of the state.

    Spokesman of the command, ASP Chris Anyanwu stated this in Abakaliki.

    He expressed dismay at the increasing level of rape cases in the state.

    Anyanwu said the suspect committed the crime when the victim was asleep adding that he will soon be charged to court.

    Mr. Anyanwu urged parents to take adequate care of their children.

    The Police command also said Thursday that another kidnap suspect, a 27 year old teacher, one Kingsley Sunday who was arrested by the command for allegedly kidnapping two of his pupils, one Kolakpo Kosoko and the sister Tolu, have been transfered to the Ogun state Police command for further investigation and prosecution.

    ASP Chris Anyanwu said that the two victims have been re-united with their family in Ogun State where they reside.

    He said, “We have concluded our own investigation on the kidnap of the two children by their teacher and this morning (Thursday), a team of police officers from our command had to escort the suspects to Ogun State for them to continue the investigation and prosecute the victims.

    “The victims have been re-united with their parents and they have also gone back to Ogun State where they reside.”

    “With the success recorded by our command and the confessional statement of the suspects, we are optimistic that the Ogun State Police Command would also do a further investigation into the matter and prosecute the suspects.”

    ASP Chris Anyanwu said that the teacher who is a staff of Imperial International School Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state was arrested in his home town, Obieze, Effuim in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state following a tip off.

  • Teacher gets 14 years for defiling minor

    A 33-year-old Fine Art teacher, Godwin Onoyiwa, of Delta Career College, Warri has been sentenced to 14 years in jail for raping a nine-year-old pupil.

    Onoyiwai raped the pupil in the teachers’ staff room on September 23, 2008.

    Justice Kujaobol Onadike said the evidence against Onoyiwai were overwhelming and had proven his guilt.

    “This act is a dastardly act that must be discouraged and it must not go unpunished. Male teachers whose parents entrust their wards in their care must desist from such act. I hereby sentence you to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.”

    The victim, who gave an account of the incident in court, said she was warned not to disclose the act to anyone or she would be severely dealt with.

    She said the teacher also threatened to fail her in her exams. Nemesis caught up with the teacher when the victim’s mother noticed her unusual behaviour.

    The victim said: “I told him that I was looking for my school bag, he asked me to wait in his office so that he could get the keys to the classroom where my bag was locked.

    “As I was waiting, he covered my mouth and raped me. I even bit his hands.”

    The victim was said to have owned up to her mother after a tissue paper soaked in fresh blood was recovered from her underwear.

    A medical examination revealed that she was raped.

    The victim’s mother said though she was satisfied with the judgment, she had expected the culprit would bag a life sentence.

    “I’m satisfied, but I was expecting life imprisonment for him. But I take it the way it is now.

    “The school has refused to apologise to my family. I would embark on the civil aspect of the case to seek damages for my daughter’s psychological trauma.”

  • Man,71, held for ‘defiling’ minor

    Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have arrested a 71- year-old man, Ganiyu Kolawole, for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

    It was learnt that the victim, a Primary One pupil, was trying to get water from a well beside Kolawole’s house on Mission Road, Ayetoro Street in Oba-Ile when the incident occurred.

    She said after school on Tuesday, she was thirsty and went to a well opposite her school, but could not drink the water because it was dirty.

    The victim said as she left the well, Kolawole called her, but she ignored him.

    She said Kolawole and another man dragged her into his room and the suspect raped her.

    The victim said: “He covered my mouth and pushed me on the bed, and after succeeding in his act, he cleaned me up because I was bleeding.”

    Kolawole said the girl approached him to buy biscuit for her and denied raping her.

    The victim was taken to the General Hospital, where it was confirmed that she was raped.

    It was learnt that the suspect served a jail term in the past for “raping another girl in the area”.

    Kolawole will be arraigned soon.
