Adeyanju commends Tinubu on appointment of new INEC chairman

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued on Thursday, Adeyanju described the appointment as a reflection of the President’s recognition of competence and inclusiveness, noting that Professor Amupitan is the first indigene from Kogi State’s minority Ijumu community to be appointed to the position, representing the north-central region.

He said the nominee’s distinguished record as a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria makes him a fitting choice to lead the electoral body at a crucial moment in the country’s democratic journey.

“I must admit that I had expected the President to appoint someone from his immediate circle or from Osun State, but this decision comes as a pleasant surprise,” Adeyanju said.

He lauded President Tinubu for making a merit-based appointment and expressed optimism that Professor Amupitan would bring integrity, professionalism, and reform-driven leadership to INEC.

VeryDarkMan slams lawyer over cautionary message

Social media critic, VeryDarkMan, has publicly rebuked his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, for advising him against taking unnecessary risks.

Adeyanju had expressed concerns about VeryDarkMan’s safety, stating that if anything happens to him, everyone will move on.

In his reaction, VeryDarkMan, in a video, labeled Adeyanju’s advice as cowardly, stressing that anyone suggesting Nigerians would quickly move on from his potential demise is either misinformed or trying to intimidate him from speaking out.

VeryDarkMan said he believes that his platform gives him the freedom to take risks, while Adeyanju seems to prioritise caution and self-preservation.

According to VeryDarkMan, Adeyanju’s comments are not only disappointing but also reflective of a mindset that people often use to scare others from speaking out.

He stated that life is fragile and unpredictable, therefore, it is essential to stand up for what one believes in, rather than being swayed by fear.

He said, “First thing first, I’m really disappointed in my lawyer, Deji Adeyanju. I’m so disappointed in you for this post especially because you are a comrade. If it was an ordinary Nigerian that say this thing I would have assumed they don’t know better.

“It’s true that Nigerians will move on if anything happens to me today, but is there any one that will die and Nigeria will not move on? Jesus Christ died, the world moved on. Catholic Pope died, the world moved on and a new Pope was installed. Buhari died, the world has moved on. Who do you think is special, you?

“Ultimately, anybody wey open his mouth talk that thing is a coward. I swear to God, any human for this country wey open his to say Nigeria will move on if you die is a coward . And trust me, that is a word those politicians have put out there to scare people from talking. Like I said, this na coward talk.

”I have the platform. Some people self wey no dey take risks, them they come kill them for their house. Look at what happened in Benue, Borno, Taraba, Delta State, Enugu. You think you are important? We are all nothing. You add so much importance to your life when you are nothing “.

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has raised the alarm over the killing of personnel and officers of Tantita Security Services Limited, a private security firm dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria’s oil pipelines and critical infrastructure.

He called on security agencies to take action not only against those who are perpetrating the brutal acts but also against their sponsors.

Adeyanju said: “By dismantling the networks that support these criminals, we can ensure a safer environment for Tantita personnel to operate and, in turn, enhance Nigeria’s oil production capacity. This will not only provide significant economic benefits but also enable us to meet our OPEC quota, vital for our national interests.’’

…commends president over P/H, Warri refineries

A human rights activist, Comrade Deji Adeyanju, on Monday, urged President Ahmed Tinubu to draft the Nigerian Army to complement the Navy in protecting oil facilities from theft.

This was contained in the open commendation letter he sent to the President regarding the recent rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

He said: “It is now obvious that the Nigerian Navy is overstretched and can no longer protect our oil facilities alone. In this light, I call on the President to direct the army to maintain an increased presence across our oil facilities and protect them from oil theft.”

He further asked the President to ensure the improvement of the lives of average Nigerians.

“While commending Mr. President for the positive steps taken on the refineries, I urge him to take urgent action to ensure that the lives of average Nigerians are improved, in line with his campaign promises,” said Adeyanju.

Earlier, he recalled that news was rife recently about the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries and the subsequent production of petroleum products from the Port Harcourt refinery.

Adeyanju added: “Following my personal confirmation of the veracity of the stories, I am compelled to publicly commend President Bola Tinubu for rehabilitating the refineries.”

He remarked that at a time when Nigerians are groaning over the huge cost of petroleum products, especially PMS, it is a considerable relief to observe that the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries have come back to life, with the possibility of driving competition that will ultimately bring down the prices of petroleum products across the country.

According to him, having taken steps to revamp the refineries, the President must go further by blocking all illegal exploitation of the nation’s oil resources by non-state actors.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has knocked lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju, over his criticism of recent demolitions in Abuja.

Adeyanju, Vincent Martins Otse (VeryDarkMan) and others led a protest against Wike’s handling of the demolition of Ruga, a settlement along Airport Road.

Adeyanju said “there is no justification for this demolition”, and asked President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the matter.

The protesters also had placards calling President Tinubu to sack Wike.

However, Wike, in an interview with journalists, claimed Adeyanju was merely seeking attention due to being “jobless.”

He revealed that Adeyanju had previously requested to become the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but was rejected.

He said: “I saw one young man, they call him Adeyanju. He is from Kogi State.

“This young boy came to me that he wants to be the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP and I said no.

“I said he won’t be, and he was not.

” I have no regret about it. He has suddenly become a civil society activist.

“He has no job and that’s why he decided to turn to a civil society activist.”

Your comments against our organization baseless, NANS tackles Deji Adeyanju

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condermed a statement credited to an activist, Deji Adeyanju, who said the association is dead.

NANS described Adeyanju’s recent write-up, which according to them was aimed to belittle the organization, as baseless.

A statement by NANS Senate President, Com. Akinteye Babatunde stated that NANS is alive and will continue to fight for interests of Nigerian students and Nigerian people.

According to the statement, NANS is not as corrupt as some profession who are known to help corrupt politicians.

He said: “We suggest that Adeyanju redirect his energy toward cleaning up the mess within himself.

“Instead of poking his nose into the affairs of NANS, we suggest that he focus on getting justice for those who were arrested during the End Bad Governance protests. He should concentrate on what matters rather than chasing clout and attempting to drag NANS into his agenda.

“For someone who claims NANS is “dead,” it is curious that Adeyanju and others still expect us to join the very struggles they claim to fight. We have never been afraid of standing up for what is right, and we only engage in struggles we understand fully and approach with knowledge of the rudiments involved.

“NANS remains undeterred. We will not be distracted by those who have made a career out of using falsehoods to rise to prominence.”

Deji Adeyanju’s law firm demands N100m from HURIWA over alleged defamation

The law firm of Deji Adeyanju, representing Asabe Waziri, a senior staff member at Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has threatened legal action against the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) over alleged defamatory statements against its client.

The letter addressed to Emmanuel Onwubiko, convener of HURIWA, demands an immediate retraction of HURIWA’s accusations of misconduct against Waziri, as well as a formal apology and financial compensation.

The letter, dated April 24, 2024, challenged the accusations by HURIWA and dismissed any insinuations Waziri was involved in corrupt activities.

It also addressed the impact of these claims on Ms. Waziri’s public image and constitutional rights.

Marvin Omorogbe, representing Ms. Waziri, asserted that HURIWA’s letter to NNPC, requesting sensitive documents related to Waziri’s employment, salaries, and ownership of properties, was a breach of her privacy and not permissible under the Freedom of Information Act.

The letter criticised HURIWA for its attempts to drag NNPC into a private legal dispute, citing ongoing court cases involving Ms. Waziri and other parties.

The letter demanded that HURIWA retracts its letter to NNPC, provide a formal apology to Ms. Waziri, issue a public apology in two national dailies and pay N100,000,000 for the defamatory statements.

It emphasised that the allegations have severely damaged Waziri’s reputation and breached her rights to privacy, property, and fair hearing..

The letter also highlighted ongoing legal proceedings related to the case, including criminal charges against individuals connected to the opposing party, reinforcing the claim that HURIWA’s actions were improper.

It also criticised HURIWA’s alleged use of media leaks to damage Waziri’s reputation and cause harm to her professional career.

Deji Adeyanju condemns arrest of VeryDarkMan, urges police to reevaluate priorities

An Abuja-based rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has admonished the Nigeria Police Force to prioritise the general public’s safety over being used to settle personal rifts.

His statement was propelled by the recent arrest of popular social media critic, VeryDarkMan ordered by actress Tonto Dikeh.

In a statement he signed, Adeyanju said it was distressing to witness the misuse of police power that was meant to serve and protect the community.

He said: “I strongly condemn the recent arrest of VeryDarkMan and the harassment of innocent citizens by the police.

“I firmly believe that law enforcement agencies should prioritize their efforts in fighting crime and ensuring public safety. Engaging in civil matters that do not pose an immediate threat to public welfare diverts precious resources and undermines the trust between the police and the people they serve.

“Every citizen, regardless of their background, deserves fair treatment and protection under the law. The arrest of VeryDarkMan raises serious questions about the impartiality and fairness of the police in their dealings with individuals from marginalized communities. Such actions can exacerbate existing social divides and erode the public’s confidence in the justice system.

“I urge the police authorities to reevaluate their priorities and focus their efforts on combating crime, responding to emergencies, and addressing the genuine concerns of the people. It is important that they adopt community-oriented policing strategies that emphasize building trust, promoting inclusivity, and fostering positive relationships with the residents they serve.

“Additionally, I call upon the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of VeryDarkMan. It is important to ensure that due process is followed and any potential misconduct or bias is identified and appropriately addressed.”

  • Group seeks compensation for Johnson, NSCDC staff, others

The Concerned Nigerians group has asked the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to compensate families of those killed by police officers.

Two Nigerians; Kolade Johnson was shot by a policeman in Lagos, while a staff of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, Ogah Jumbo was allegedly beaten to death by policemen in Nyanya area of Abuja.

The group made their stance known in Abuja on Friday during a protest to the Force Headquarters to demand justice.

Shortly after the Protesters assembled, the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu invited members of the group to his office for a chat.

Speaking on why they were protesting, the Convener of the group, Deji Adeyanju said the police leadership needs to purge itself of bad eggs.

Adeyanju also said the misconduct of some officers was due to poor funding.

He said: “In the recent time, Kolade Johnson, a staff of NSCDC and several others have been killed during an engagement with the Police. We feel there is need for Police authority to take more steps in the hygiene of officers and men of the Force.

“We believe some of the misconduct witnessed is due to the fact that the Police is underfunded. If they are well funded, we believe money would be made available to purchase equipment that don’t necessarily have to be deadly.

“We believe proper funding will prevent friction and make them discharge their duties effectively.

“We are also seeking compensation for the families of Johnson, the NSCDC staff and so many others that have been killed as a result of Police carelessness,” Adeyanju said.

Responding to their request, the IGP said: “I invited you in to know the problems. We are citizens of this country and the Nigeria Police Force is for all. We were established to serve the society and so we find it necessary to listen to you.

“Frictions arise when there are gaps in communication. Listening to you like we just did will make us better informed and it will help us avoid friction.”

  • Charlyboy remains our leader, says ‘Ourmumudondo’ group

Executives and members of ‘OurMumuDonDo’ Movement, a civil society group that advocates good political leadership, on Tuesday said that  Charles Oputa,a.k.a Charlyboy, remained their leader.

Mrs Folake Agunbiade, who is the Knowledge Management and Learning Manager of the group, stated at a press conference in Abuja.

Agunbiade described as baseless, trending reports in social media, that Charlyboy had been relieved of his position as the group’s leader because of an alleged financial misdeed.

“In this wise, the management of Ourmumudondo restates that there is no change in the corporate governance of the movement, and Mr Charles Oputa (aka CharlyBoy) remains the chairman of the organisation.

“We acknowledge several social media reports on the alleged transaction between Charlyboy and Mr Festus Keyamo, Spokesperson of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation.”

“The organisation wishes to state clearly that the alleged transaction did not arise from or on behalf of its activities or projects, and therefore it has no implication for our credibility as a movement.

“We want all Nigerians of goodwill to know that the allegations and counter allegations have no bearing on the movement and its activities,” She said.

Agunbiade, however, acknowledged that there were misunderstandings between some members of the group, but added that its leadership was working towards reconciling all aggrieved members.

“The movement is conducting an internal review and establishing protocols for public engagements that will forestall any likelihood of conflict arising from its operators.”

NAN recalls that Mr Deji Adeyanju, an activist and estranged member of Ourmumudondo, recently released an audio recording, alleging that Charlyboy agreed to receiving money from Mr Festus  Keyamo, Spokesperson of   President Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation.

According to Adeyanju, the said payment was a ‘settlement’ for a musical video produced by Charlyboy to smear the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Adeyanju and some members then called for the removal of Charlyboy as the group’leader, saying he compromised with the “enemy”.

However, Charlyboy, explained that he released such videos, one each against both the APC and PDP presidential candidates on the eve of the 2019 General Elections, but was not paid by anyone.

He added that he remained non-partisan, and was neither in support of any political party, as his yearnings was for the not-too-young-to–run mantra to strive.

“For someone to believe that I collected money in nine digits from a politician for a video clip is laughable, because even if I am Davido or Wizkid, who will pay me such amount.

“Some persons are bent on denting the brand that I have built over the years, but I am not deterred because the struggle for a better Nigeria must continue, and my mouth cannot be shut,” he said.(NAN)
