Delta Govt moves to protect workers, tightens payroll controls

The Delta State Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininim Oseji, has ordered an immediate halt to the approval of staff loans for civil servants whose salaries are already heavily burdened by deductions.

The directive, described as part of decisive measures to protect workers from financial distress and restore payroll integrity, was issued recently during an unscheduled inspection of the Delta State Computer Centre, Asaba.

Dr. Oseji, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Wilson Chukwuka, said the government would no longer tolerate payroll practices that financially strangle workers.

During the inspection, she frowned upon cases of staff absenteeism, absconding, lateness to work, the prolonged retention of casual staff beyond approved limits, and excessive salary deductions.

She reviewed staff time books and conducted random salary checks using the payroll system, uncovering what she described as troubling inconsistencies.

To improve transparency, the HoS directed an immediate adjustment of the payroll format to reflect “Gross Salary” rather than “Total Allowance.”

She also directed the Permanent Secretary to formally caution Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), especially Directors of Finance and Accounts, against excessive and unjustified deductions from workers’ salaries, warning that further infractions would attract sanctions.

She also instructed the Director of Computer, Mr. Tuoyo Eweto, to ensure the prompt monthly submission of the state’s wage bill and warned staff of the Computer Centre against soliciting inappropriate gratifications from financial institutions and other organisations handling salary deductions.

The visit, which featured the Head of Service personally reviewing payroll data, was aimed at strengthening audit verification, transparency and fraud control.

The visit also served as a follow-up to the two-day workshop on audit verification and fraud control held in November last year.

Delta women storm Asaba in prayer against cultism, drug abuse

Women from across Delta State converged on Asaba, the state capital, to pray against cultism, drug abuse, immorality, and other social vices at the 19th Mothers Arise Prayer Conference, a faith-based initiative.

The prayer gathering, hosted by the wife of the Governor of Delta State, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, held yesterday, at the Government House Chapel, Asaba, had as its theme, “Not So,” taken from Luke 1:60.

The conference focused on the role of mothers in spiritual intercession, family stability, and societal transformation.

Addressing participants, Deaconess Oborevwori called on women across the state to rise from what she described as spiritual slumber and take responsibility for the protection of their homes, children, and the state through sustained prayer.

She described the event as a divinely appointed covenant day, noting that February 2 of every year had been set aside as a special day of prayer for women in Delta State.

According to her, the theme “Not So” was a reminder for mothers to take firm stands against negative trends, drawing inspiration from the biblical account of Elizabeth during the naming of John the Baptist.

“This year’s theme, Not So, is a wake-up call for us as mothers to stand our ground. If Elizabeth had kept quiet, destiny would have been truncated,” she said.

The First Lady urged women to reject every form of evil confronting the state, including cultism, drug abuse, immorality, and insecurity, stressing that mothers play a crucial role in shaping the moral direction of society.

“As mothers, we must give no place to the devil. Our mouths are not for negative confessions but for decrees. Take your place, put a stop to that evil, and God will honour your words,” she stated.

She further encouraged women to intercede fervently for their husbands, children, the less privileged, and the vulnerable, noting that prayer remained a strong defence for families and communities.

Deaconess Oborevwori also appealed to women to continue praying for the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, expressing optimism that the MORE Agenda would continue to drive development across Delta State.

“Delta State is the finger of God, and Delta State is a praying state. With prayers, more projects will spring up across the state,” she said.

She also urged women to remain active participants in governance and to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, describing the PVC as a powerful tool for civic engagement.

Earlier, the guest speaker and Founder of Christ Like Ministry Centre, Rev. Fanny Ekpekurede, described the conference as a clarion call for mothers to return to the altar of prayer.

“If there is a woman to pray, there is a God to answer,” she said, urging mothers to reject spiritual laziness, nonchalance, and negative utterances over their children.

She advised women to surround themselves with prayerful companions, observe fasting and spiritual discipline, and protect their homes through constant intercession.

The conference was attended by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Lady Catherine Onyeme; wives of former governors, including Deaconess Dame Edith Okowa and Deaconess Roli Uduaghan; female political office holders, wives of government functionaries, leaders of Christian bodies, and various women’s groups from across the state.

Activities at the event included praise and worship sessions, intercessory prayers for families, youths, the Governor, and the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary arms of government, as well as a guest ministration by gospel artiste Efe Tobore.

APC Delta North coalition calls for inclusion of pioneer members in governance

    …backs re-election of Tinubu, Oborevwori in 2027

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Coalition for Equity (DNCE) have called on the national leadership of the party and the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to ensure the inclusion of long-standing party members in governance.

They made the call during a recent coalition meeting held in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, where stakeholders expressed concern over what they described as the continued exclusion of pioneer and loyal APC members from key decision-making processes and political appointments.

Speaking at the gathering, the Convener of the APC DNCE, Chief Alex Ikpeazu, emphasised that sustainable party growth and effective governance could only be achieved when those who laboured for the party’s survival are recognised and fully carried along.

He urged Governor Oborevwori and the national leadership of the APC to promote equity, fairness, and inclusiveness, noting that many founding members have remained steadfast despite political challenges and frustrations.

“We have been in the party for years without defecting and have not benefited from the party we diligently formed. We do not want those who joined later to override us. We do not want to continue to be in bondage,” Ikpeazu said.

He called on the national leadership of the party to establish a clear framework that prioritizes old APC members for leadership positions at the ward, local government, and state levels, stressing that such an approach would foster unity and understanding.

“The coming congress should be devoid of conflict. Governor Oborevwori should also consider old APC members in appointments across the state. It is the turn of Delta North to produce the state party chairman, as Delta South and Central have already done. Once it is zoned here, we will harmonize and present our best candidate. This will help mend fences ahead of 2027,” he added.

The Secretary of the coalition, Hon. Kemmer Enina, warned that marginalising founding members could weaken party unity, noting that exclusion breeds discontent and undermines loyalty.

Similarly, Ambassador Kenneth Rafua, a coalition leader, stated that inclusion is not a privilege but a right, adding that experienced party members possess the vital institutional memory needed to strengthen governance.

Another leader, Ben LionHeart Williams, appealed to party leaders to avoid actions that could alienate committed members, describing unity as the backbone of political success.

The coalition’s Publicity Secretary, Chief Barr. Williams Agholor said the group’s position was not driven by bitterness but by genuine concern for the future of the APC and effective governance in Delta State.

Also speaking, High Chief Gabriel Ohai, the Odogwu of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and a pioneer APC member, recalled the sacrifices made by early members of the party and called for deliberate efforts to reintegrate them into governance structures.

Other members, including Comrade Victor Sorokwu, Ajifo Nwabunma, and Mr. Osafule John, echoed the call for recognition, fairness, and active participation of founding members in government affairs.

The coalition reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and pledged continued support for the government, while urging party leaders to address their concerns in the interest of unity and progress.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to working toward the re-election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

  • APC will deliver massive votes for Tinubu, Oborevwori in Delta — Dafinone

APC will deliver massive votes for Tinubu, Oborevwori in Delta — Dafinone

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) on Sunday declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would secure overwhelming victories for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2027 general elections.

He spoke wjen  the Sapele chapter of the Okpe, Sapele and Uvwie Federal Constituency, OSU, was inaugurated.

Dafinone, who addressed thousands of party members and supporters at the Sapele Local Government Council Secretariat, Sapele, said the APC was not aiming for narrow victories but for massive votes that would strengthen the constituency’s political relevance.

According to him, Sapele’s performance at the polls would determine the level of attention and development it attracts, stressing that strong voter turnout was critical to the area’s future.

The senator urged party members to demonstrate unity and visible loyalty to both the state and federal governments, noting that sustained support for President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori was necessary for the dividends of democracy to reach the grassroots.

He congratulated the newly inaugurated executives of the Sapele chapter of OSU, assuring them of the support of his office and charging them to ensure that the APC recorded clear victories across all wards in the area.

The inauguration attracted a large turnout of supporters from across Sapele, with the council secretariat and adjoining spaces filled by party members dressed predominantly in yellow and white colours.

OSU Coordinator, Chief Solomon Ighrakpata, said the OSU structure was formed on April 4, 2025, to rally support for what he described as a performing government at both the federal and state levels.

Ighrakpata noted that the body brought together members across political and ethnic lines, united by confidence in the leadership of President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori.

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State, Barr Kingsley Esiso, who also addressed the gathering, said the objective of OSU was to ensure that Governor Oborevwori returned to Government House in 2027.

He urged the newly inaugurated executives to immediately commence grassroots mobilisation, including party registration and voter engagement across communities in Sapele.

Deputy Chairman of the APC in Delta State, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, said the turnout reflected growing confidence in the APC, adding that the party was consolidating its base ahead of the next general elections.

WACCIMA urges south-south stakeholders to push full operation of Delta Ports

The Warri Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WACCIMA) has called on stakeholders in the South-South region to stop compromising on issues affecting the full operation of Delta ports and to demand their optimal utilisation.

Engr. Anthony Okoh, President of both the Delta Association of Chambers of Commerce (DACCIMA) and WACCIMA, made the call on Thursday during a visit by members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, to the chamber’s office in Effurun, Delta State.

Okoh reiterated WACCIMA’s demand for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to revive and fully operationalise the Delta ports, noting that functional ports would generate significant employment and economic benefits for residents of the region.

“Our people in the South-South compromise the problem. It is an attitude issue. We need to change our mindset and stop compromising with the government,” he said.

He linked the underperformance of the ports to the deteriorating road infrastructure across the southern region, explaining that existing roads were designed to accommodate a specific volume of heavy-duty traffic, which has since been exceeded.

“When the pressure surpasses the estimated capacity, like a chain reaction, the roads give way,” he noted.

Okoh advocated the development of an efficient railway system connecting Niger Delta states to major business corridors to reduce pressure on roads and improve trade logistics.

“The trailers would not be overloading our roads, and this will ensure business connectivity,” he said.

He also disclosed that repeated efforts by the organised private sector to meet with Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to discuss strategies for harnessing the state’s economic resources have so far been unsuccessful.

“The work we do here is voluntary. We work, sacrificing our funds and time. Sometimes we hear our governor is in Brazil, China for business, but the organised private sector is not involved.”

“We are planning a programme to ensure our national body comes and liaises with the state government, so that they can echo our plans. We are lawful, we are not confrontational.

“We have members who can, for example, go into big mechanised farming, but we don’t get the needed support from the government; we get it from other private sectors.

“The government can act as insurance for this organised private sector,” posited.

Recalling a plastic recycling project, which saw no fruition, an organisation presented to the state government years ago, he maintained there existed noble ideas to boost the state economy, but the “practicality” on the part of the government remained a problem.

Earlier, Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Okiemute Okpomor, who led other members of the NUJ on the visit, stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between both bodies so as to move the economy of the state forward.

  • Lawmaker gets kudos

    Lawmaker gets kudos

For many Nigerians, empowerment programmes have become synonymous with empty promises and political favouritism.

But for Mr. Eloho Idoro of Emevor, Delta State, a recent intervention facilitated by Jonathan Ukodhiko, the member representing Isoko North/South Federal Constituency, has rewritten that familiar story.

In a deeply personal testimony shared via Facebook, Idoro recounted how scepticism initially clouded his perception of the business expansion empowerment scheme carried out last year by the federal lawmaker. Like many citizens who have watched similar initiatives come and go, he assumed the programme would ultimately benefit only a privileged few with political connections.

“I honestly did not believe it would be different,” Idoro admitted. “I thought it was another programme that would end on paper or be shared among party loyalists.”

Yet, driven by a mix of curiosity and quiet hope, he said he reluctantly prepared a business plan and submitted it for consideration. What followed, according to him, was a process that surprised and impressed him.

Idoro said his application was shortlisted strictly on merit, without influence or backdoor arrangement. He was subsequently invited for a physical interview, where he defended his proposal before a selection panel — a step he described as rare in grassroots empowerment initiatives.

“For the first time, I felt like my idea mattered more than who I knew,” he wrote.

The beneficiary described the interview process as transparent, professional and fair, noting that applicants were assessed based on the viability of their businesses and their capacity for growth. When he was eventually selected, Idoro said the experience restored his confidence in public service and governance.

Beyond the financial support, Idoro said the programme sent a powerful message to ordinary citizens — that integrity, hard work and preparation could still open doors.

He lauded Ukodhiko for what he termed a “people-centred approach” to leadership, noting that the lawmaker’s empowerment model demonstrated that public office could still be used as a platform for genuine development, rather than political patronage.

“At a time when many have lost faith in leadership, this programme reminded me that hope is not completely lost,” Idoro said.

His testimony has since sparked conversations online, with many residents of the constituency hailing the lawmaker’s transparent process and calling for similar initiatives across the state and country.

For Idoro and others like him, the empowerment scheme was more than an intervention — it was a proof that responsive leadership, when practised with sincerity, can still touch lives and restore belief in governance.

“To the glory of God, I emerged as one of the 18 beneficiaries of the N500,000 empowerment grant, without any form of political influence,” he said.

Idoro noted that the experience fundamentally changed his perception of governance and leadership, stressing that the process demonstrated that integrity and fairness were still possible in public office.

“That singular act made me understand that there is still hope for the common man in the corridors of power,” he wrote.

He described Ukodhiko as a leader who listens to the cries of his people and responds decisively without compromise, commending the lawmaker and his foundation for prioritising genuine empowerment over patronage.

Expressing his gratitude, Idoro pledged continued support for Ukodhiko’s principles, programmes and vision for the Isoko nation, affirming confidence in his leadership and endorsing his aspiration for re-election in 2027.

Since assuming office, the lawmaker has been widely acknowledged for initiating empowerment schemes, interventions and constituency projects aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities across Isoko North and South.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement, said operatives trailed a suspect to a notorious criminal hideout allegedly operated by Oke Jerry Ekokodjie and one Ibori (surname unknown).

Traders allege irregularities, protest poll result

Traders at the popular Igbudu Market in Warri, Delta State, are protesting  outcome of the market poll, alleging the process was not free.

The aggrieved traders, who displayed placards with inscriptions condemning the election, claimed they were prevented from voting.

They called on government and other relevant stakeholders to intervene and probe the poll.

The protest was led by Eshare Freeborn, with Grand Chairman of Igbudu Market, Ejiro Ekpekurede and others, who cited cases of intimidation and alleged manipulation.

“I won’t accept anyone won when my people did not vote. Government should send people on a fact-finding mission to the market,” Eshare said.

Some traders also questioned credibility of the voters. A woman trader said: “I don’t know the people brought to my unit to vote.”

Another stakeholder accused the electoral body of partiality, saying: “The committee was biased. It should be scrapped.”

The traders insisted the alleged irregularities undermined credibility of the election and called for intervention to restore confidence in the market’s leadership process.

But Rume Kughere, who won, dismissed the allegations, insisting the process was fair.

Refuting claims the election was not free and credible, he promised to reach out to his opponents in the interest of peace and unity in the market.

    Yesterday, traders were busy.

However, it was learnt key market leaders had been invited to the Area Command.

FG moves to slash transport fares in Delta with CNG buses

Road transport costs in Delta State are set to drop sharply following the delivery of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses by the federal government.

The buses, handed over on Wednesday in Asaba, the state capital, to the leadership of the Delta State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), are part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

Five CNG buses were delivered to the state through the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), with similar distributions made to other states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking during the handover, Secretary-General of the Delta State NURTW, Comrade Chukwuemeka Okolo, said the buses would be deployed across the state’s three geopolitical zones to ease the burden of rising transport costs.

According to him, the dual-powered buses, which run on both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), would significantly reduce fares for commuters.

He urged Deltans to continue supporting President Tinubu, describing the initiative as evidence of the administration’s commitment to easing the hardship faced by Nigerians.

“We expect more of these buses, and we believe that with continuity, the benefits will be deeper and more widespread,” Okolo said.

Receiving the buses, Chairman of the state caretaker committee, Comrade Patrick Okpandu, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the leadership of the NLC, promising that the vehicles would be deployed strictly for their intended purpose.

Other union leaders, including Comrades Dennis Araro, Orji Ossai, Igbine Odomero, Ovo Abeke, and Peter Ojevwue, applauded the Federal Government for the intervention and for recognising the current leadership of the NURTW in Delta State.

They expressed optimism that additional vehicles would be delivered to the state in the coming months.
