Delta monarchs to citizens: don’t expect govt to do everything for you

The Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has emphasised the importance of active participation from the citizens of Asaba, Delta State, in driving economic development.

The monarch spoke yesterday at the Asaba Economic Summit 2025, wherein he urged the community to take initiative rather than solely relying on the government for development solutions.

This message was conveyed during an event organised by the Sub-Committee on Summit/Exhibition, led by former Commissioner for Information, Ogbueshi (Barr.) Chike Ogeah. The summit, backed by the Palace of the Asagba of Asaba, took place at Ogwa Ukwu Ahaba, highlighting the collective responsibility of the community in fostering economic progress.

He stated, “The question, action plan that is where I want to challenge Oganihu Asaba. A lot has been said, but let this not be a talk show. Let us walk the talk; let us distil all the salient points to see how we can breath life and vitality to some of those major points.

”Investment is very crucial to us. As I always say, the population of Asaba is youthful; almost 70% youthful population. If we don’t find a way of engaging them, then we are in trouble, and the trouble is already there.

“So, whatever we can do; and let us not think that government will do everything for us. I have always said that you don’t expect government to do everything for you.

“There are certain things we must do for ourselves, and I’m happy that we are already doing so much for ourselves and we should be proud of the much we have been doing, including this summit, because it has been a resounding success.

“I have already started looking ahead. Early 2026, I have already put together the concept paper where I want to engage with Corporate Nigeria in Lagos, titled, ‘Asagba Ahaba: An Evening with Corporate Nigeria’, and it’s for purposes of investment.

“We must speak to who is who, it has never happened anywhere. But these are the kind of things I like doing; I will dare and it’s going to succeed.”

Earlier, the Chairman, Committee on Driving Investment in Asaba, Chief Afam Obiago, said the event was the visionary initiative of the incumbent Asagba which took place on the heels of the 2025 Asaba Day.

Chief Obiago who holds the title of Oganihu recalled that the 26-man committee was set up early this year by the monarch with a charge to attract investments to Asaba.

He said the Asagba had to break down the terms of reference into workable and actionable mandates, including to ensure that Asaba is investment-friendly and that existing investors are doing business in Asaba without unnecessary bottlenecks.

He added that Sub-Committees populated by subject specialists were created to take charge of Data and Research, Infrastructure and Urban Council, Land Bank, Liaison with Government Agencies, Summit/Exhibition, as well as Finance and Banking.

Obiago said the four subject specialists who made presentations were chosen to navigate the audience through various topical issues of our time.

Obiago, a renowned economist and economic consultant to the Delta State Government commended the Asagba for his vision of making Asaba an investment destination and assured him and the people that the Committee under his watch would deliver on its mandate.

Oborevwori preaches love, unity, Christ-like living at Christmas

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has felicitated with Deltans on the celebration of 2025 Christmas, calling on them to embrace love, unity, and Christ-like living as the foundation for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development in the state.

Oborevwori, in his Christmas message, issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, urged Deltans and residents to use the season to reflect on the virtues of sacrifice, compassion, and selfless service exemplified by Jesus Christ, while renewing their commitment to building a more harmonious society.

The governor commended the people of Delta State for their resilience, unity, and steadfast support, noting that their cooperation had been instrumental to the progress recorded so far.

He said the Yuletide season offers an opportunity for thanksgiving and renewed hope, reassuring Deltans that his administration remains committed to delivering good governance and inclusive development in line with his administration’s MORE Agenda.

Oborevwori highlighted notable achievements recorded in the last two years, particularly in infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, education, youth empowerment, agriculture, and security.

He cited the ongoing construction of major roads and flyovers across the state, improvements in primary and secondary healthcare facilities, and sustained investments in human capital development as clear demonstrations of his administration’s resolve to improve the well-being of the people.

Oborevwori also acknowledged progress made in workers’ welfare, peace-building efforts, and social intervention programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including widows, women, and youths, stressing that these initiatives have helped to promote stability and stimulate economic activities across the state.

Assuring the people of better days ahead, the governor disclosed that robust provisions had been made in the 2026 Delta State budget to further enhance their living conditions.

According to him, the budget prioritises infrastructure expansion, job creation, education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth empowerment to drive sustainable growth and shared prosperity.

“The 2026 budget has been carefully designed to consolidate on our gains and address the pressing needs of our people. It reflects our commitment to improving the quality of life of Deltans and ensuring that development reaches every part of the state,” he stated.

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his pledge to remain focused on people-oriented policies, programmes, and projects, assuring that no community would be left behind in the State Government’s development efforts.

He urged Deltans to continue to support his administration and to uphold peace, tolerance, and unity, noting that collective effort remains vital to achieving the state’s long-term development plans.

While wishing residents a joyful Christmas celebration, the governor prayed for a peaceful and prosperous New Year, expressing confidence that Delta State would witness greater progress and economic opportunities in the years ahead.

“Christmas reminds us of the power of hope and the triumph of light over darkness. As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, let us work together to build a stronger and more prosperous Delta State for present and future generations,” he added.

Delta police command denies flouting order on withdrawal of officers attached to VIPs

The Delta State Police Command has clarified its stance regarding the withdrawal of police officers assigned to protect Very Important Personalities (VIPs).

The command emphasised that the ongoing withdrawal process is being executed without bias or selective treatment.

Police spokesman in the state, SP Bright Edafe, said that the implementation of the order is being conducted in a structured and professional manner to ensure that public safety remains a priority.

He said the clarification was issued in response to allegations that police officers continue to be attached to a resident named Sunny Nwakaego in Sapele, despite the directives for withdrawal.

He reassured the public that their commitment to maintaining safety and security in the community is paramount, and any exceptions made in individual cases will be addressed appropriately.

The statement reads, “The Delta State Police Command has observed with concern a misleading online report published by Sahara Reporters alleging that the Command has flouted the Presidential directive on the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP duties. The Command categorically states that the report is false, unfounded, and misleading. The purported story suggesting non-compliance by the Delta State Police Command emanates from unverified social media posts and reports that do not reflect the factual position of the Command or the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“The allegation that officers remain attached to a resident identified as Sunny Nwakaego in Sapele despite a directive from the Presidency is incorrect and should be disregarded. The command does not have personnel attached to the said person as published by Sahara reporters.

“However it’s pertinent to state that on 12th December 2025, the DPO Sapele division received a distress call from one precious Itorho and Believe Odorkor against the said Sunday Okeke. Their disagreement over an undisclosed business transaction led to a feud and the DPO Sapele acted swiftly and invited all parties to the Division where statements were recorded and they were granted bail while investigation continued.

“The Command wishes to reaffirm that it is in full compliance with the directive of the Federal Government, as conveyed by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, directing the nationwide withdrawal and redeployment of officers from personal VIP attachments to core policing duties. Implementation has been carried out in a structured and professional manner to ensure public safety is not compromised.”

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens and continues to implement government policies with professionalism, discipline, and transparency.

It urged members of the press to verify information from the Command through the office of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) before publication.

Residents, motorists jubilate as Oborevwori drives through Warri, Effurun flyovers

…assures residents of traffic relief, early completion

Residents, traders, and motorists in Effurun and Warri trooped out en masse in jubilation and to pour encomiums on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as he drove through the ongoing construction of DSC Roundabout and Enerhen Junction flyovers and the reconstruction of a section of the Warri/Sapele/Benin Road.

Showering praises on the Governor who walked through Enerhen Junction, they described him as the people’s Governor who is doing wonders in the Warri/Effurun metropolis and other parts of the state.

While assuring Governor Oborevwori of their massive support and votes in 2027, they wished him God’s protection and guidance as he moves Delta State forward.

Fielding questions from journalists after the walk-through at Enerhen Junction, an obviously elated Governor expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the ongoing flyovers and road dualisation projects within the Warri and Effurun metropolis.

He said the interventions would significantly ease traffic congestion and improve the quality of life of residents.

Governor Oborevwori said he had appealed to the construction firm, Julius Berger, to ensure the temporary use of key sections of the flyovers during the Christmas and New Year festivities to reduce traffic congestion.

“I appealed to Julius Berger that, because of Christmas and New Year, they should make sure that the flyovers are temporarily opened for use, because these areas are very important to the people,” the Governor said.

He acknowledged the difficulties residents had endured for over a year due to the construction works, but said that the temporary opening of sections of the flyovers had already brought noticeable relief.

“I know what the people have gone through, and I feel their pain. But when there is pain, there will be enjoyment at the end of the project. The Warri and Effurun people are very happy as you can see,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori noted that one side of the Enerhen flyover was almost completed and put to temporary use, while both sides of the DSC flyover were also opened to traffic for the festive period, this is to ease the usual gridlock experienced in the area.

“Before now, Enerhen had become something else, but what we are seeing today is different. This is what we want to do for the people of Warri and Effurun,” he added.

Responding to questions on the overall progress of the flyover projects, the Governor expressed optimism that the three flyovers and the ongoing road dualisation would be completed during the dry season.

“You can see the work going on. By this dry season, they should be able to complete the three flyovers and the dualisation. Everything is going on well; there is nothing to worry about,” he said.

He commended Julius Berger for the quality of work, noting that only a few states in the country could engage the construction giant for such projects.

In his Christmas message to Deltans, Oborevwori said, “There is peace everywhere. I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. God bless you all.”

  • Delta stakeholders urge NPA to revive Warri, Koko Ports, decry ‘propaganda’

Delta stakeholders urge NPA to revive Warri, Koko Ports, decry ‘propaganda’

Stakeholders in Delta State’s maritime and business community have urged the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to move beyond what they described as propaganda and take concrete steps to revive the long-neglected Warri and Koko ports, warning that prolonged inaction is denying both the state and the nation significant economic benefits.

The call was amplified at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Warri Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WACCIMA) in Warri, where port operators dismissed recent NPA claims about decentralising port operations and shifting activities from the congested Lagos ports to Delta State.

Operators painted a grim picture of ports that have remained largely inactive for nearly two decades, with general cargo vessels abandoning the Warri and Koko ports.

A recent visit to the Delta Ports administrative headquarters in Warri revealed empty stacking areas, dilapidated warehouses with leaking roofs, abandoned Nigeria Customs Service offices and port agents with little or no work.

“We just come and sit every day; nothing is happening. For the past three weeks I have been in Warri and we have not seen a single vessel. Apart from tanker vessels, you cannot see anything,” a port agent, Maxwell Etoroma, lamented.

Stakeholders’ frustration intensified following online reports suggesting that Warri Port had suddenly become busy after the NPA’s announcement.

“All those are just propaganda. People called me from Abuja and Port Harcourt saying Warri port is booming, but there is nothing here,” Etoroma said.

The leader of the NPA Daily Berthing Meeting Committee in Warri, Sir Chidi Njoku, accused authorities of repeatedly announcing dredging and revitalisation projects without tangible results.

“It may surprise you to know that some months ago they said they dredged that place at the Escravos bar, and within months the same problem started again. Billions of naira gone. The only vessels we get are tankers carrying PMS. The real vessels that will affect the masses are not there,” Njoku said.

He added that operations at Koko Port were even more limited, noting that the only vessel that calls there is a small export ship carrying between 400 and 500 metric tonnes, arriving once every one or two months.

“Claims that Koko Port is busy are misleading,” Njoku added.

Despite the bleak situation, stakeholders maintained that the Delta ports are naturally positioned for heavy commercial activity and appealed to the NPA under its Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, to implement its revitalisation plans.

“Warri and Koko have the best natural ports in this country. This is the safest port. We are ready to work. Most agents here have 40 to 50 years of experience,” Etoroma said.

The Delta State Government also described the revival of the ports as a national economic imperative rather than a parochial demand, noting that functional ports would boost federal revenue and benefit Nigerians.

Speaking exclusively on the NPA’s proposed focus on Delta ports, the Commissioner for Rural Roads and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, stressed that development must commence in earnest, citing the state’s significant contributions to the national treasury.

“Delta state government, when it is brought back to life, it will to a very large extent boost the economy of the state and that of the country. Not only because we desire it, but it is the right thing to do.

“Our contributions in terms of the resources of the federation today is number one. They say to whom much is given, much is expected. We do believe we are contributing so much to the federal purse and that if the federal government is also able to come back to revive the Warri Port which is a port that before now was very active, it is something that is good for the federation, so it is not only in our self interest,” Aniagwu.

“We are urging and pleading with the federal government to expedite action, they have indicated that they are going to make it work and we appreciate them for that,” he said, adding that political alignment had made engagement easier.

On reported opposition to the proposed decentralisation, Aniagwu declared, “If there is any other person kicking against it, then the person doesn’t wish Nigeria well. Because the Warri Port is not only to serve the people in Warri or Delta, it is to serve Nigerians, just like Lagos ports is serving Nigerians… It will increase business, it will boost our economy, it will make the Federal Government to even have more money.”

He highlighted improved road links under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, noting that clearing goods in Warri would ease access to the Southeast, cut transport costs and reduce demurrage.

At the AGM, WACCIMA described the state of the ports as unacceptable as the President, Anthony Okoh, said the neglect of Delta ports had been a concern for over a decade and urged authorities to accelerate rehabilitation to unlock the Niger Delta’s economic potential.

Chairman of WACCIMA’s Board of Trustees, Chief Moses Orogun, said reopening the ports remained the fastest way to revive Warri’s economy, stressing that business leaders must push policymakers because “the government alone cannot do it.”

At the National Assembly, Hon. Chief Thomas Ereyitomi, representing Warri Federal Constituency, has moved a motion urging full support for the decentralisation of port operations.

“Decentralization of Nigerian port operations is a national economic imperative, not a regional contest,” Ereyitomi said, adding that the policy would “reposition Nigeria as a competitive maritime hub in West Africa.”

He urged the federal government to back the move with investment in rail, inland waterways and roads, and called on the NPA to expedite the relocation of designated operations to Warri, Koko, Sapele and Burutu ports.

Seemingly frustrated operators, while highlighting the benefits – jobs, lower logistics costs, decongestion of Lagos ports, increased government revenue and a stronger national supply chain, however, maintained that until ships return in meaningful numbers, Delta’s ports will remain symbols of promise unfulfilled — and a test of whether the NPA’s words will finally be matched with action.

Four killed as vigilante–youth clash sparks unrest in Delta community

Tension engulfed the Elume community in Sapele Local Government Area on Sunday after a violent confrontation left four people dead, several others injured, and parts of a hotel set ablaze.

The incident reportedly began around 1:30 a.m. when four hotel lodgers stepped outside their rooms to get fresh air after a power outage.

Witnesses said a vigilante operative, allegedly intoxicated, confronted the men and ordered them back inside.

The lodgers insisted the room was too hot and requested that electricity be restored first.

According to witnesses, the argument escalated when the vigilante officer attempted to use force, pushing one of the men and threatening to shoot.

He allegedly deployed tear gas before opening fire, shooting one of the youths in the face at close range. The victim, rushed to the hospital, died Monday morning.

Community members claimed the vigilante officer had a questionable history. News of the young man’s death triggered widespread anger, prompting his friends and youths from the Ibada community to storm the vigilante base in search of the suspect, who had already fled.

A confrontation ensued between the youths, vigilante operatives, and accompanying police officers. During the clash, the vigilante commander and his team reportedly opened fire, killing two more people, including a 15-year-old boy and a close friend of the first victim.

The situation quickly spiralled, with enraged youths setting parts of the hotel ablaze.

The arrival of soldiers eventually restored order after they appealed for calm and assured the community that all those involved, vigilante members and police officers present, would face justice.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the deaths via SMS, noting that the suspects were currently at large.

Delta North lawmakers, council chairmen reject proposed inclusion of Anioma in southeast

    …reaffirm commitment to South-South

Lawmakers representing the Delta North Senatorial District in the Delta State House of Assembly, alongside the nine local government chairmen from the district, have firmly rejected proposals suggesting that a future Anioma State should be situated within the South-East geopolitical zone.

In a jointly signed statement issued on Sunday, the legislators and council bosses reiterated their longstanding demand for the creation of Anioma State but insisted that the state must remain within the South-South region where the Anioma people are historically and administratively located.

The leaders said their position followed extensive deliberations on renewed national discussions and ongoing legislative processes concerning the creation of new states across the country.

According to the group, the agitation for Anioma State is “a legitimate aspiration deeply rooted in history,” championed by past and present leaders of the people.

They described the struggle as a generational pursuit aimed at securing political identity, cultural preservation, and accelerated development for the Anioma nation.

“Our quest for a distinct and autonomous Anioma State is not a fleeting political venture but a legitimate aspiration deeply rooted in history, championed by our revered forebears,” the statement read.

“We are united in the belief that the creation of Anioma State is a matter of justice, equity, and a necessary step towards fulfilling the political and developmental destiny of the Anioma people.”

The leaders expressed “total and unequivocal support” for the creation of Anioma State strictly from the present nine local government areas in the Delta North Senatorial District.

They listed the LGAs as Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North-East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Ukwuani, with Asaba proposed as the state capital.

They pledged to deploy their “full political weight and mandate” to lobby and support every legitimate effort that will lead to the establishment of Anioma State.

However, the group condemned what they described as attempts to drag Anioma into a merger with the South-East, stressing that such propositions contradict the historical and geopolitical identity of the people.

“We vehemently oppose any proposed move or merger with any part of the South-East geopolitical zone,” the statement declared.

“Anioma is, and must remain, in the South-South. The Anioma people are historically, geographically, and administratively aligned with the South-South. This position is deeply rooted in our heritage and is non-negotiable.”

The Delta North political leaders assured constituents that they would remain steadfast in protecting the collective interest and identity of the Anioma nation, even as discussions on state creation continue at the national level.

Edo seeks urgent action on land dispute with Delta

Edo State Government has begged President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the land dispute between it and neighbouring Delta State.

It called for justice, equity, and fairness to prevail in the disputed areas.

Edo Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, made the appeal when he led a delegation comprising members of the Edo State Boundary Committee on a fact finding mission to the disputed communities.

Idahosa said the State remained committed to protect territorial dignity of the state and the people of Orhionmwon.

He insisted that Jameson River remained the natural demarcation landmark to the disputed Ugbakele boundary Community.

“I passionately call on the President to use all necessary demarcation agencies to resolve these lingering issues.

“We decided to ask questions and history of this area. We found out that this Jameson River is the natural boundary between Edo and Delta States.

‘You can see the previous structures of the AT&P company. This land is clearly for Edo State.

“We thank the community people and settlers. We plead they continue to maintain the peace pending the outcome of the National Boundary Commission,” he pleaded.

The Edo Deputy Governor also met with community leaders of Oben, Ikobi, Iguelaba, and Obozogbe-Nugu communities to verify their claims and grievances.

The communities complained of non recognition by oil companies operating in the area.

They also decried cedeing of their communal land to private individuals by the immediate past administration of the state without compensation.

“The previous government has done injustice to the Edo people by allocating land to investors without having interactive sessions with us.”
