  • Houses, cars razed in Delta community cult clash

    Houses and vehicles belonging to the Orhuwhorhun Community vigilance group in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State were razed following Monday’s cult clash.

    The Nation learnt that the vigilance group was on routine patrol when the suspected cultists struck.

    According to reports, residents were injured and robbed off their possessions, while some others fled.

    Commissioner of Police Adeyinka Adeleke said the clash resulted from the vigilantes’ involvement in politics. He said nobody died.

    Police spokesman Orisewejie Chuks, who also confirmed the report, said the suspected cultists burnt the vigilance group’s vehicle.

    He said: “The situation has been brought under control. Houses were burnt in the rival cult clash. The police are working to nip the situation in the bud.”

  • Cult members raze houses, vehicle in Delta community

    The Delta State Police Command has confirmed a cult clash, which led to the razing down of some houses as well as the vehicle belonging to Orhuwhorhun community vigilante, in Udu council area of Delta state in the late hours of Monday.

    Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police Adeyinka Adeleke, disclosed the clash was due to the vigilantes’ involvement in politics in the area.

    He further assured that no life was lost in the incident.

    Pointing out that the local security group is not trained to manage political conflicts, the commissioner warned against future interference in political issues.

    The Nation however learnt the vigilante group was on a routine patrol when suspected cult members unleashed havoc, resulting in the destruction of its vehicle, a Toyota Sienna.

    According to reports, unsuspecting residents of the area were injured and robbed off their possessions during the clash.

    Also, others are said to have fled their homes in fear.

    The Acting Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Orisewejie Chuks, also confirmed the report.

    ASP Chuks stated that suspected cultists on a rampage burnt the vigilante vehicle.

    “The situation has been brought under control. Houses were burnt in the rival cult clash. The Police are working seriously to nip the situation in the bud,” he said.

  • Breaking: Aide to gov Okowa shot dead in Delta

    A Special Adviser to Delta state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa identified simply as Ngozi Ijei was shot dead in Ekpan, Uvwie local government area of the state last night.

    The killing of Ngozi, who was a key player in the political unrest in the area since the last decade, has led to fear and tension in the area.

    It was gathered that youths were mobilizing as at the time of this report to attack perceived enemies of the deceased and burn down their properties.

    Prior to his appointment by Okowa in 2016, Ngozi was standing trial for sundry crimes, including murder, but was controversially released from prison before being appointed SA on Community and Youth Affairs to the governor.

    His murder last night was the latest in a bloody chapter which has seen a spike in insecurity in Ekpan and Jakpa Road areas of Uvwie LGA.

    It would be recalled that at least six persons were killed in the area in the last couple of weeks in the latest upsurge of violence before the botched February 16 general elections.

    Uvwie is usually a hotbed of crisis since 2003, because of the usual contending political forces and interests of key players in the Urhobo community.

    The current Delta South Senatorial candidate of the PDP and incumbent House of Representative member in Uvwie/Sapele/Okpe Federal Constituency, Ms Evelyn Oboro, hails from the area.

    Oboro is locked in a supremacy tussle with deposed chairman of the council, Mr. Henry Baro, who is the APC flag-bearer aiming to succeed Oboro in the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

    The governorship candidate of the APC, Mr. Great Ogboru, has a strong fellowship in the area, and in his 2003 failed contest with then-incumbent James Ibori, dozens of houses were burnt in Uvwie by supporters of the PDP and Ogbodu’s then Alliance Democracy.

  • Ex-convict arrested for armed robbery

    A 37-year-old member of a notorious robbery gang, Philip Rome, said to have been terrorizing residents of Ugheli, Patani and Warri areas of Delta State, has been arrested.

    He was arrested recently by the operatives of Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), in Ugor Community in Ugheli South Local Government Area of Delta State alongside two other members of his gang identified as Saturday Isegini and Oke David.

    The suspects, according to sources had carried out several armed robbery and kidnapping operations across Delta State.

    It was said that two locally made short guns, seven live cartridges and a stolen Volkswagen Golf 3 car were recovered from Rome and members of his gang at the time of their arrest.

    Rome, who was released few months ago from the Warri Prisons, allegedly confessed during interrogations that the robbery operation that led to his arrest was the first and only robbery operation.

    He said:  “One of my friends by name,  Eseletu, who  I  met at the Warri Prison, lured me into joining the gang and  I  was arrested after my first operation where the Volkswagen Golf 3 car, N500,000 and mobile phones were robbed by my gang that fateful day”.

    A source however dismissed the suspects’ statement as untrue, adding that they had been on the wanted list of the Delta State Police Command and the Department of State Security (DSS).

    ”The three suspects and some others at large are notorious armed robbers and kidnappers and they have been terrorizing Ugheli, Patani, Warri and Sapele areas of Delta  State.

    ‘’They have been involved series of armed robberies and kidnappings. They are not first offenders and some of their syndicate are still in prison.’’

    ‘’They are among criminals on the wanted list for kidnapping and armed robbery in Delta State and we were deployed to this state to arrest them and we caught them while they were planning another robbery operation.

    ‘’We tracked and arrested them after they have successfully robbed a man of his Golf 3 wagon car and a lady passenger who they took her  cash and other valuables .

    ‘’They took the vehicle to Kokori where it was hidden with the intention of using it for kidnapping and armed robbery the next day and they were intercepted and arrested”,  the source added.

     

  • NPA Delta indigenes: support maritime operators

    The federal government has appealed to maritime- impacted communities in Delta state to support efforts to revive ports activities by not pressuring operators.

    The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms. Hadiza Bala-Usman, made the plea during the official handing over of ceremony of the Terminal B, Berth 4 of the Old Warri Port to Ocean and Cargo Services limited, a partner to maritime industry giant, SIFAX Group, at NPA, Warri on Monday.

    Bala- Usman, who was represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations of the NPA, Dr Sokonte Davies, concessioning of ports facilities was carried out to enhance productivities and attract more cargos to the hitherto abandoned ports.

    Appealing to the people in the host communities to the maritime environment, the NPA chief executive officer said the dividends of supporting the federal government’s initiatives in the maritime would be an enhanced economy for Warri and environs, the state and surplus of jobs for people from the communities.

    “We therefore implore the impacted communities, in making the government’s efforts a success, they should work positively with the concessioner; the communities should try not to put any pressure on them because pressures can shut the business down.

    “But if the communities support them, they will see that as activities increase and vessels come, it will increase the engagement of young men and women, even the old people.

    “The communities will be positively impacted because economy will grow and it will have positive effect on every area of life of the people.

    “We are using this opportunity to appeal to the host communities to help this one to work. It is working in other places, don’t let yours be different,” Bala-Usman said.

    Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) Alex Okoh, on behalf of the National Council on Privatisation, expressed satisfaction at the milestone event.

    He said that Ocean and Cargo Terminal Services Limited emerged the successful concessionaire for the transaction.

    He revealed the concession of Terminal B is for a period of 25 years at an annual lease fee of US$1,621,500.00 in addition to the entry fee and monthly throughput fee chargeable on volume of cargo handled

    According to him: “The objective of the government in Port concession is to increase efficiency in our ports, improve service delivery, upgrade and modernize facilities in ports, reduce cost of shipping and clearing of goods at the Ports and relive the government of the burden of financing the sector.”

    Group Managing Director of SIFAX Group Adekunle Oyinloye said Ocean and Cargo Services Limited was ready to deliver efficient services at the port and make the Warri Port a vibrant and enviable hub of maritime activities again.

  • Three in police net for child trafficking

    The Warri Area Command of the Delta state police command has arrested three suspected child traffickers in connection with an alleged sale of a two-year old ‘stolen boy’.

    One Juliet Philips, who operates an unregistered orphanage home in Ekpan community of Uvwie council area of Delta state, abducted a child identified as Testimony and allegedly sold him to a pastor in Edo state, with the assistance two others, including her mother, for a sum of N900,000.

    According to a police source, the trio; Juliet Philips, her unnamed mother and a retired Director in the Community Development Department of the Ministry of Women Affairs in Delta State, Collins Ogbor, were arrested at Idogbo in Ikpoba-Okah council area of Edo state by men of the Warri ‘A’ Division.

    The source said Philips reportedly abducted the two-year old, who is a twin, from his mother, a somewhat mentally challenged woman, on November 28, 2018

    According to him, the mother of the two-year old, who is known for begging alms at Effurun Market daily, went for her usual business that fateful day when Juliet Phillips approached her, pretending to be willing to assist her and the children.

    “Juliet offered to assist the vulnerable woman with a job at Igbudu market and she accepted. Both of them boarded a commercial tricycle popularly referred to as Keke to Igbudu market. She asked the mother of the boy to pay for her own transportation because she (Juliet) could only afford to pay for only herself.

    “Already Juliet Phillips, under pretence to help, had backed one of the twins, as the two of them were sleeping. Immediately they arrived Igbudu Market Juliet hurriedly paid for herself before they got down from the Keke and before the woman finished paying and collecting her change from the commercial tricycle operator, she (Juliet) had disappeared with the child she carried”, the source narrated.

    The source further said that the mother of the boy, realising that the supposed helper had made away with her child, raised the alarm in the market, calling the attention of the people around, asking to be helped to recover her ‘stolen child’s.

    After making away with Baby Testimony, Juliet, whose unregistered orphanage is known as Godswill Orphanage, took the boy to his mother, who runs another orphanage, registered with the state government as Deliverance Orphanage Home in Ozoro, Isoko North council area of Delta state.

    It was from here that the retired Director from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr Ogbor, linked the two ladies to a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Edo state, who reportedly made payment of the sum of N900,000 for a supposed adoption of the abducted boy.

    When reached for a confirmation of the case, spokesman of the Delta state police command, Mr Andrew Aniamaka (DSP), said the matter is already being investigated, adding that it would be charged to court as soon as investigations are done with.

    “Yes there’s indeed a case like that, which is under the custody of the Warri Area Command. Investigation is still ongoing and those found to be culpable at the end of the investigation will be arraigned in court as soon as possible”, Aniamaka said.

     

  • Delta APC inaugurates 4,000 canvassers for Buhari

    The leadership of mainstream of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Delta State chapter has concluded plans to inaugurate 4,000 canvassers on Saturday February 9th in Asaba.

    Drawn from 270 wards in the state, the inauguration is part of efforts towards securing another four years term for President Muhammadu Buhari.

    Leader of the mainstream Delta APC, Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor in a statement, said: “One area where Delta APC has unity of purpose is that Delta must contribute to getting President Buhari get four more years in office.

    “To this end, I have been working assiduously with our party structure ably led by Chief Cyril Ogodo to ensure that we, the Mainstream of the party in Delta State contribute our own quota to getting votes out towards giving our dear President another four years in office.

    “I’m therefore, happy to announce to you that working with our party structure, we are organising a conference for the inaugural and commissioning of 4000 canvassers for a door to door campaign program in Delta State for the re-election of President Mohammadu Buhari.

    “This Conference is slated for Saturday February 9th, commencing 8am at Grand Hotel, Asaba.

    “The aim is to train a 4000 strong force of Canvassers and equip them with materials (Buhari Flyers, posters etc) to proceed on a door to door campaign in the 270 wards of Delta State.

    “Each canvasser shall be charged to bring in a minimum of 100 votes.

    “The 4000 Canvassers are therefore expected to get out a minimum of 400,000 votes for our President.

    “The canvassers shall commence work on February 10th and shall canvass intensely for six days. The canvassers shall be supported by 10 Buhari branded campaign vehicles mounted with loud blaring speakers also distributing Flyers and Posters.

    “The vehicles shall operate one each, in the 10 Federal Constituencies in the State. These vehicles have been contributed to the campaign programme and shall also be launched at the conference.

    “Chief Cyril Ogodo is already reaching out right now to party structure and leaders as we seek to recruit the 4000 canvassers from among our members across the state”.

  • Delta Auditor-General arraigned

    The Delta State Acting Auditor-General Mr. Paul Aghanenu has been arraigned at an Asaba Magistrate Court on a four-count charge bordering on misdemeanor and forceful entry of a landed property.

    The property belongs to Mr. Gowon Adebe, the police said.

    In a copy of the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, the police is accusing Aghanenu and others now at large of causing breach of peace and destroying a perimeter fence on a piece of land measuring 100ft by 75ft along  the Asaba-Ibusa road, Asaba.

    The case with charge No. CMA/516c/2018, the Auditor-General was said to have committed the offence which is punishable under section 517 (A) of the criminal code cap 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006.

    Aghanenu was granted bail on personal recognition by the court.

    The charge sheet, which was signed by A. Adaghe (Esq), N. A Ukpebor O/C Legal, Zone 5’ Headquarters, Benin, Edo State, alleged Aghanenu also unlawfully and maliciously destroyed a perimeter fence valued at N6 million  property belonging to Adebe, who hails from Isoko area of the state.

    The charge sheet reads: “That you Paul Aghanenu (M), and others now at large on or about the 10th of October, 2018 at Asaba in the Asaba Magistraterial District did conspire among yourselves to commit misdemeanor to wit: forcibly entry and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 517 of the criminal code cap 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006.

    “That you Paul Aghanenu (m) and others now at large (m) on the 10th of October, 2018 at along Asaba-Ibusa Road, Asaba in the Asaba Magisterial district did conducted yourselves in a manner to cause breach of peace, reasonable apprehension of peace, entered into the land measuring 100ft by 75ft situate at along Asaba-Ibusa Road, Asaba which was actual peaceful possession of Mr. Gowon Adebe (m) and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 81 of criminal code cap 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006.

    “That you Paul Aghanenu (m) and others now at large (m) on the 10th of October, 2018 at along Asaba-Ibusa Road, Asaba, in the Asaba Magisterial Distict did unlawfully and maliciously destroyed a perimeter fence value N6m property of Mr. Gowon Adebe (m) and thereby committed an offence punishable in the criminal code cap 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria 2006.”

    The case has been adjoined to 11 February, 2019 for hearing.

  • Two injured as PDP, APC supporters clash in Delta

    At least two persons were reportedly injured in Abraka community, Ethiope council area of Delta state on Monday during a clash between supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Also, the week-long violence, which hit some parts of Effurun in Uvwie council area of the state of persisted on Monday as suspected political thugs engaged in gun battle in different axis of the area, spreading panic.

    The Nation gathered trouble started in Abraka, the host community to the Delta State University (DELSU), when a chieftain of the PDP identified as Elder Kelly was assaulted by suspected APC thugs.

    The incident led to a reprisal on some leaders of the APC in the community by suspected PDP thugs.

    According to a community source, the ensuing free-for-all left two persons with various degrees of injuries.

    The source said: “Followers of the PDP member felt he was assaulted by a member of the APC. This caused the clash between the parties.”

    When reached, spokesman of the Delta state police command, Mr Andrew Aniamaka (DSP), confirmed two casualties and injuries.

    However, he said the situation was under police control.

    “Let me start by saying that as we speak, peace and calm have returned to Abraka.

    “I think it is important to tell our people that it is an election, not war, whoever wins eventually is still a Delta person. There really no need for all these violence,” Aniamaka said.

    At Effurun, the supremacy battle among political thugs loyal to the APC and the PDP continued on Monday around Jakpa junction, Effurun Market, Orhumarho and the adjoining areas.

    The development shut businesses with residents of the area stricken with fear.

    A community source informed The Nation that gun-wielding thugs were running after each other in the area, shooting sporadically and causing panic in the area.

    Although no casualty was reported on Monday, a resident of Uti area, off PTI Road informed of consistent police harassment of unharmed members of the public.

    He narrated how a policeman shot a resident who went to draw money from an ATM machine in the leg.

  • Okowa is not a listening governor – Uduaghan

    The immediate past governor of Delta State and the All Progressives Congress, APC, Delta South Senatorial candidate, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has said he left the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, as his successor, Senator Arthur lfeanyi Okowa is not a listening governor.

    Uduaghan made this statement at Koko, Warri North local government area of Delta state when the APC governorship candidate, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru campaign train visited Koko.

    He noted that a man of his caliber cannot be in a place and he will not be listen to, stressing that Chief Great Ogboru has shown that he is a friend of the Itsekiri people, that is why he is teaming up with Ogboru anVote overhead bridges”. The Senator also stressed that it was Buhari’s administration that worked hard to ensure that the pension of DSC workers was paid as well as put in motion, the resuscitation of the steel plant.

    While Charging Itsekiri and Ijaw people to vote for APC at all levels, Uduaghan noted that President Muhammadu Buhari within few months of their request that the Warri Seaport be revitalize, the president completed the dredging of Excravos river which has been a major challenge to big vessels coming to Warri port.

    Uduaghan while referring to Ogboru as the incoming Governor of the state said; “Excellency, I know  when you get to Government House, you will listen to me because some people in the state failed to listen to me and I am too big to be in a place where they won’t listen to me.

    “By your actions so far, you have shown that you a friend of the Itsekiri people, those who think they can do without us, we leave them to God, we begged that the remaining 5km Koko road dualization be completed, but nobody listened to our plea.

    “President Buhari has listened when we made case for the dredging of Excravos river, today the contract for the dredging of Warri seaport and Koko port have been awarded and work gone far.

    “The Koko Forshore contract awarded to someone in the state ruling PDP through NDDC was abandoned it until PMB came, now work have began, though in a slow pace.

    Uduaghan while bemusing on the Okowa government scrapping the payment of WAEC fees for Delta students, said that he was sad recently when he saw Church raise offering to pay WAEC for 5 students whose parents could not afford to pay.

    The former Governor, who initiated the Programme known as ‘Edumarshal’ to get poor children out of the streets, said “our children must be in school and the ‘Edumarshal’ Programme must be continued by our incoming Governor Chief Great Ogboru because I am very passionate about education.

    “So when you come in March 2nd, this should be one major focus area for you.”

    The Delta State Governorship Candidate of All Progress Congress (APC) Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru assured Deltans that his administration will give Local Government Councils all money accrue to them to speed off the desired development at the grassroots.

    Chief Ogboru gave this assurance when the Delta State APC Campaign Organization visited Koko and Oghara the headquarters of Warri North and Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

    He said; “The days of sharing Local Government council money is over. Once i emerge the Governor, Local Government money shall be given directly for the development of the Councils.

    “The Council its Chairman and others shall be given their money to develop their Councils”

    He added; “My job as Governor of Delta State is to distribute the state resources equitably and provide infrastructural development across the state. We are also going to give light because when there is light people who are hiding under darkness will run away”.

    “Sometimes ago we always win the elections, but been cheated, but our time have come. The time has come to move the state forward. The time to liberated our state has come.”
