Only 300Megawatts out of 972 Megawatts of electricity at the Transcorp Ughelli Power Plant, Delta State is dependable, the Company’s Chief Executive Officer, Adeoye Fadeyibi, has said.

He told The Nation that the company met 972 megawatts on ground, but discovered that there is only 300 megawatts capacity.

He said the company has enough gas to run its plant, despite that the product poses a problem to the growth of the industry.

“Though gas in an issue in the industry, it is not a general concern across all the power generation companies (GENCOs). What we have done in Ughelli Power Company is to look at the gas in place and see how far we can go. Based on our business model, we have enough gas to run 400 mega- watts. We have excellent personnel at the plant. I’m talking about existing resources in addition to support from international organisations. We are putting the right resources in place to foster the growth of the company,’’ he said.

Fadeyibi said the company has a rehabilitation plan, adding that it is committed to the transformation of the sector. He said this is the time to invest in power because there is market for it.

“We have to give the market a credit. We have a national bulk trader ( the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET). It is a party that sits between us and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). We have a suitable market in place to operate,’’ he added.

Similarly, the Chairman, National Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, said the coming of the 14 power generation and distribution companies would help in developing the sector. He said the firms would help in improving power supply and boosting socio-economic activities.

  • Kidnap girl’s parents cry out over delay in suspect’s trial

The parent of a kidnap victim, Miss Tejiri Jegede-Ikpen has cried out over the alleged delay in charging the kidnap suspect to court by the Delta State Commissioner of Police.

The 11-year-old victim and a JSS 3 student of Presentation National High School, Benin-City, Edo State was kidnapped on June 28, 2013 on Adonophe Road, Ughelli, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The father of the victim, Mr. Samuel Jegede-Ikpen, stated that on June 28, 2013, his daughter, Miss Tejiri Jegede-Ikpen returned from school after her JSS 3 examination and was kidnapped the following day.

Narrating the incident to reporters, Mr. Jegede-Ikpen explained that he took his daughter from school on June 27, 2013 after she had finished her examinations and on June 28, she went to her mother’s shop where a motorcycle rider who came under the pretext of buying drinks, deceived the little girl and took her away after telling her that her mother asked him to bring her.

Jegede-Ikpen said: “The suspect, on a motorbike, came to our shop and asked the salesgirl that he was buying drinks worth N11,400 and he paid only N10,000 and requested the salesgirl to come with her for the balance. While they were going, the salesgirl complained that the distance was much that she could not go further and the bikeman dropped her and demanded that his money be given back to him.

“The bikeman immediately returned to the shop where he asked little Tejiri Jegede-Ikpen to come with him that the mother asked him to bring her. She followed him until they got to a village called Ophorigbala in Olomu, Ughelli South Local Government Area before she realised that she was being taken elsewhere. She started struggling on the bike until she was taken to an abandoned building in the village in a vehicle in the company of three persons.

“It was a man who was going through that path that heard my daughter’s screams and confronted the suspect. Before then, they had asked my daughter to hide somewhere, but the man went ahead and saw the little child in the house and immediately alerted the community people who came and apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police in Ughelli A Division after a face-off with the man.”

Jegede-Ikpen, who lamented that since the suspect was taken to Asaba, nothing has been heard about the case, even upon promises and expectations that the boy was going to be charged to court.

He alleged that the boy who allegedly confessed that another person gave him information that led to the kidnap of the girl, was neither investigated nor did the house the girl was taken to demolished, adding that he does not even know if the suspect has been released or not since there was no information about the present state of the suspect.

When contacted on the incident, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Lucky Uyabeme said that the suspect would soon be charged to court.
