Mother of missing 4-year-old seeks intensified search of child, others in Delta

Vero Lucky, a distraught mother in Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, has issued a heart-wrenching plea to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to locate her four-year-old son, Moses, and other missing children in the area.

Reports had initially claimed that at least 26 children had been abducted from the community since March 2025.

However, Ughelli North LGA Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, disclosed after a high-level security meeting that seven cases had so far been confirmed.

The meeting, which included Agbarho women leaders, representatives of various community groups, the Agbarho Royal Palace, Agbarho Descendants Union, and security agencies, including the Ughelli Police Area Commander, aimed to address growing concerns over the disappearances.

In an interview with The Nation in Warri, Vero recounted the traumatic moment her son disappeared in May.

“Moses was outside playing. I just stepped inside to get something, and by the time I came out, he was gone. We looked everywhere. We’ve not seen him till today. We reported it to the police. They took my number and promised to call if he’s found,” she said.

She revealed she had just started a hospital cleaning job when the incident occurred and has since been unable to return to work. The pain, she said, has been overwhelming, especially as her husband, who is ill, remains in the village receiving treatment.

“We had gone to the village for his treatment. He asked us to return so the children could resume school. Then this happened. Moses is my last child,” she said tearfully.

As part of measures to curb further abductions, Council Chairman Egbo announced an immediate ban on the activities of iron scavengers in the community. He also inaugurated an investigative committee headed by ACP Adebayo, the Ughelli Area Commander, to conduct a thorough probe into the missing children cases.

Addressing the press after the security meeting, Egbo explained that the session was convened to hear directly from the affected communities and ensure coordinated action moving forward.

“As against the report circulating in the media that 26 children are missing in Agbarho Kingdom, for now, we have been able to confirm seven of them, though it’s a sad one to us but we will ensure we do our best to go in search of them, and to put a measure in place to avert future recurrence.

“I have charged the security agencies to conduct a proper investigation to unearth those seven children who are missing. We have taken their photographs, the names of the children and those of their parents.

“We have also promised to support one of the mothers who is still in school to go back and study, and to also give two other affected mothers palliative for them to start up a business of their own for them to take care of themselves and their children, while the government and the security agencies hit the ground running in search of the children,” Egbo added.

The chairman reiterated his commitment to ensuring peace and security across the local government.

He stressed that the government was unaware of the happening since the first case of child abduction took place in December 2024, as reported by one of the affected mothers during the meeting.

Following the report of the alleged suspected scavenger who was caught in the process of kidnapping a child in Agbarho Kingdom, the Chairman banned the activities of scavengers popularly known as “Iron Condemned.”

Egbo stated that until they are properly profiled in Agbarho Kingdom, any scavenger caught in Agbarho conducting their activities will be arrested by security agencies to face the full weight of the law.

He called on parents, caregivers, and the general public to be vigilant at all times and to always report unsuspected faces and cases of criminal activities in their area to the security agencies.

There will be steady power supply in Ndokwa land, says Delta D/Gov

Delta Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme has disclosed that strident efforts are being made with all relevant agencies to ensure steady electricity supply in Ndokwa land.

Fielding questions on a live programme on Arise TV on Sunday morning and monitored in Asaba, the state capital, the Deputy Governor stated that a lot of progress had been made to ensure stable supply of electricity in Ndokwa land.

Ndokwa is host to several oil prospecting and exploration companies, including the Independent Power Plant (IPP) at Okpai.

Onyeme said: “On the issue of electricity, it is true that a large part of Ndokwa nation have no electricity for a very long time; we have had reasonable discussions with the electricity company and I can assure you that government is working; from Tuesday after the public holiday, the electricity company will mobilize and commence work. So, in the next two months, electricity will be restored in Ndokwa land.”

On planned protest by some people to draw attention to the electricity challenges in Ndokwa land, the Deputy Governor observed that such protest must have been based on information that work would soon commence for electricity to be restored in the area.

He alluded that such protest could be political as it is baseless due to the fact that there is work in progress peacefully and diplomatically for the people to have electricity.

Aggrieved women protest alleged disappearance of 26 children in Delta community

Many women from the Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have staged a protest over the unexplained disappearance of at least 26 children in the community.

Dressed in black, they marched through the streets while chanting sorrowful songs and holding placards with messages like “Stop Stealing Our Children,” “Where Are Our Kids?” and “We Want Justice.”

Reports indicated that those children, primarily aged between three and 10, had been missing for over eight months without any clear explanation.

Local sources have claimed that despite numerous complaints to law enforcement and local authorities, there have been no significant results or recoveries, heightening the residents’ sense of fear and frustration.

One of the protesting mothers, Mrs. Efe Okoro, conveyed the community’s daily fear due to the ongoing situation.

Okoro said: “We are living in fear every day.

“Children go to school and never return. Some disappear while playing just in front of their homes. Nobody is safe anymore.”

Another protester, Mrs. Itohan Orugbo, said that the government and security forces had failed them.

“If our children were the children of senators or top politicians, would they still be missing?” she asked angrily.

The Ovie of Agbarho Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Ogurimerime Okorefe I, had condemned the wave of disappearances of children, describing them as “a declaration of war against the people.”

In a statement, he called on security agencies to “act swiftly or risk the total breakdown of law and order in the community.”

He also urged community vigilantes to increase surveillance in all quarters of Agbarho and advised parents to monitor their children closely.

    Delta community affirms Gbaramatu-Ijaw roots

The people of riverine Kantu (Ikantu) community in Warri Southwest Local Government Area of Delta State, have affirmed their Gbaramatu Kingdom ancestry, pledging “loyalty and allegiance” to the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HM Oboro Gbaraun II.

Leaders, including Chiefs of Gbaramatu kingdom, who hail from the community, while speaking at a press conference held at the community hall on Friday, said the clarification became necessary following an “age-long misrepresentation” that Kantu is an Itsekiri community.

A statement by the leaders, including Chairman of Kantu Community Working Committee, Mr. Windfree Atemubaghan; Pa. Edwin Atikan Atemubagha, the Ama-Okosuwei of Ikantu; Chief (Lt. Col) S. Economic (Rtd), Seipakumor of Gbaramatu and Clan Chief representing Kantu; Chief Arthur Eyiangho, the Ebiyemeyewei of Gbaramatu; Chief Shola Gbofeyin, the Amadiwei of Kantu; Pa Isaac Meneko, Ikantu Elder; Joseph AdidiChief priest; Stephen Efejuku Esq., Legal Adviser; Endurance Ufene, Youth President among others, condemned the plot by some indigenes to ascribe the community to their maternal lineage.

Addressing newsmen, the Chairman of Kantu Community Working Committee, Mr. Windfree Atemubaghan, narrated the founding of the community by an Ijaw man, Oweijibri, who hailed from Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom community around the 11th century.

He explained that the Itsekiri Language became the majorly spoken language in the community due to intermarraiges between their ancestors and the Itsekiris.

“The male children of Oweizibiri married Itsekiri women who also gave birth to other aildren. In the course of growing up, the children were more attached to their mothers, who spoke their Itsekiri dialect with their children. And some of the children also inter-married with other Itsekiri indigenes. As such, Itsekiri language became dominantly spoken by majority of Ikantu people. This is how the Ikantu Community which is one of the major Communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom became affiliated to Itsekiri people.

“From the above, we wish to categorically inform the general public, Local, State, and Federal Government and the International Community that Ikantu is an Ijaw Community in Gbaramatu Kingdom and is never, was never and will never be part of Itsekiri ethnic nationality.

“Some of the descendants of our ancestor, Oweizibiri are still bent on alienating their father (Ijaw) land to their maternal Itsekiri nationality. We strongly condemn this attitude of these persons because it has created antagonism for the people of Ikantu Community, among their kiths and kin in Gbaramatu Kingdom and the larger Ijaw nation.

“In conclusion, we wish to state and inform the general public, Local Government, State, Federal Government and the International Community that Ikantu is an Ijaw Community having an ancestral affinity with Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State and will continue to remain in the Traditional Institution of Gbaramatu Kingdom,” the community chairman stated.

On his part, Pa. Edwin Atikan Atemubagha, the Ama-Okosuwei of (Ikantu) Community, emphasized the need for peace in the area, as the false narrative was causing tension in the area.

The Fiyewei (spokesman) of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, who was part of a delegation of HM Oboro Gbaraun II, to Kantu, welcomed the affirmation of the community leadership that Kantu is an Ijaw community in Gbaramatu Kingdom.

WAEC: Parents fear mass failure over late arrival of materials in Delta

Parents of students sitting for the 2024/2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Warri, Effurun, and neighbouring communities have raised serious concerns over possible mass failure following repeated late delivery of examination materials.

The Nation reports that several students did not return home until nearly midnight on Wednesday, May 28, after spending long hours waiting to write the day’s papers.

Others were dismissed between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., depending on when the question papers arrived at their respective centres.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) attributed the delays to efforts aimed at preventing exam question leaks.

Students sat for the English Language examination that day, with the first paper reportedly beginning as late as 11:00 a.m.

“We just pray the students will pass. The fact that it was a core subject, English Language, makes it worse,” said a concerned mother and hairdresser in Warri. “My son’s school had to run a generator so they could write. He told me it’s an experience he’ll share with his children someday.”

Another parent, whose child wrote the exam near the railway tracks in the Uvwiama community of Agbarho, expressed fear not just over the academic impact but also the safety risks: “Apart from the fear of moving around so late, I was also afraid the children could be kidnapped.”

No room for corruption in Delta, says Aniagwu

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, has praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his prudent financial management.

He described it as the administration’s most significant achievement in two years ago.

Aniagwu, who spoke on a television programme, said the governor’s strategic fiscal policies have ensured stability, growth, and continued development across the state.

He said one of the greatest achievements of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in two years of his administration is effective and prudent management of resources.

“The prudent management of resources has given birth to all the other projects that he has executed in advancing development across the state.

“We make bold to say that Delta State is very solvent today about the only state in this country where you are given a contract and you have 40% advance payment.

“That helps to reduce the issue of cost of fund for the contractors and that also gives us advantage of ensuring that the jobs are completed in good time.”

Aniagwu added that, despite not taking any new loans, Oborevwori has spent nearly N300 billion to repay debts and fulfill contractual obligations inherited from previous administrations.

“So, in a nutshell, the unity that he is building, anchored on this prudent management of resources, is what stands Oborevwori out amongst many.

“Don’t forget that the award given to him clearly mentions the effective and prudent management of resources to the extent that 24 months running, Oborevwori has not asked for a dime from anybody in terms of borrowing even as he pays any contractor as soon as a certificate is raised.

“You can go ahead and fact check me, we are about the only state in Nigeria today that is running along that trajectory and we give God the glory for the government that we have at the moment that is progressing along that line.

“Much credit goes to Oborevwori for leading all of us to be able to embrace prudence, probity and accountability in the governance of the state.”

The commissioner said in the past two years, significant infrastructure projects have transformed key areas in Delta State, particularly in Uvwie, Udu, and Warri South.

“Through strategic development programs, several major bridges have been constructed or revitalized, including those at the DSC Roundabout, PTI Junction Roundabout, and the Enerhen junction.

“The Beneku Bridge now links communities in Ndokwa West and East, while the Ayakoromo Bridge which connects over 15 communities in Burutu Local Government Area to Ughelli south has been given a new lease of life.

“The Orere Bridge is nearing completion, with the deck already finished. Additionally, the Trans-Warri Bridge project is progressing, aiming to further improve interconnectivity across the state.

“In the education sector, a new campus has been established for the Southern Delta University in Orerokpe while construction of various faculties and supporting infrastructure is ongoing at main campus in Ozoro thereby enhancing access to higher education in the state.

“Numerous other public facilities have also been developed or rehabilitated over the past two years. More than 30 residential flats have been built for military personnel, reflecting collaboration between the state and federal governments.

“Infrastructure developments are underway in communities and empowerment programs are being expanded to uplift youth and women economically.

“As such, the focus remains on ensuring that governance translates to tangible benefits for the people of Delta, with the hope that these local gains will eventually cascade to national recognition and development.”

On the brewing political crisis in the Warri Federal Constituency, Aniagwu, urged all parties to maintain peace while the relevant authorities address the underlying issues.

Soldiers, Tantita operatives intercept suspected stolen crude oil-laden truck in Delta

Personnel of the 181 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Oleh in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, in a joint operation with operatives of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, on Monday, intercepted a vacuum truck laden with suspected stolen crude oil and its driver at Olomoro Community.

The driver of the truck, identified as Matthew Ojomikre, is in custody of the Army.

The suspect and the truck were arrested after stealing crude oil from wellhead 3, under oil mining lease (OML) 30, operated by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited (HEOSL).

It was gathered that the suspect went to the well-head without the permission, approval and license from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), to illegally load crude oil.

The suspect was accosted just when he was about to leave the scene by soldiers, who further informed Tantita operatives, leading to his eventual arrest.

When interrogated, the suspect confessed that his company was contracted by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited to help evacuate sludge from well 3, Olomoro, but he failed to present any formal approval or document to show that such activity was to take place.

Findings revealed that HEOSL usually sends crude oil and condensate trucking permits to officers of the Nigerian Army and TSSNL for proper monitoring from the loading to the discharge point.

At the time of filing this report, officers of Tantita Security Services, in collaboration with the Heritage team and the Nigerian Army, had collected samples from the vacuum truck for laboratory testing and analysis.

The development has caused concerns among stakeholders, with calls on relevant security agencies including the Department of State Services to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, the Security Manager of Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited, Lt. Col. Goldman Azagba (Rtd), said he was unaware of the driver’s business at the wellhead.
