Old Students Alliance-Badagry congratulates Ambode, deputy

The Old Students Alliance-Badagry (OSAB), has urged the Governor-elect of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and his deputy, Dr Oluranti Idiat Adebule to hit the ground running once they take office on May 29, 2015.

In a congratulatory message to the incoming Lagos Chief Executive, his deputy and all the  All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates from Badagry area that were victorious in the March 28 and April 11 elections, OSAB enjoined Ambode to immediately immense himself and his team in the arduous tasks ahead to sustain the enviable height of the centre of excellence as the state of reference in the country.

The congratulatory message signed by president Mr Felix Sadare and the general secretary Otunba Yomi Olomofe, drew the attention of the successful party candidates to the extremely high expectations of the people of Lagos in particular, and Nigerians generally in the areas of infrastructure developments, quality and affordable health care delivery, provision of quality and affordable housing schemes across the state, continuous employment generation, security of lives and property of Lagosians, etc.

“We wish to place on record our unwavering confidence in the calibre and competence of our Governor-elect Mr Akinwumi Ambode, his deputy, Dr Oluranti Adebule, and indeed, the candidates representing Badagry at the federal and state legislative chambers. These are people of exceptional personal and professional endowments, who have made invaluable contributions over time, to the growth of Lagos state. We therefore envisage a seamless transition and subsequent elevation of the state to higher levels of excellence”. The alliance said.

  • Boroffice: Mimiko plotting to impeach deputy

Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Robert Boroffice, yesterday accused Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko of plotting to impeach his deputy, Ali Olanusi, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Boroffice, in a statement in Abuja, alleged that the governor was harassing his deputy with thugs, a development he added, was putting his life in danger.

He insisted that Olanusi has the right to defect to any party since Mimiko, who contested on the platform of the Labour Party alongside Olanusi,  had also defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Boroffice said: “As the Asiwaju of Akoko-land, our people have mandated me to warn the governor against frustrating an industrious and highly prominent Akoko man simply because he joined another party.

“Alhaji Olanusi, who is our dear son, had helped to stabilise the Mimiko administration.

“We won’t fold our arms and watch the governor frustrate or disgrace him out of office, because he has not done anything wrong.

“Mimiko should leave our son alone to enjoy the joint ticket he won together with him. We are solidly behind him in Akoko-land.”

  • Mimiko after my life, says deputy

Mimiko after my life, says deputy

Protesters yesterday attacked the convoy of Ondo State Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi, blocking his entrance to the Government House.

His security personnel shot  into the air to disperse the protesters.

Olanusi defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that as the Supare-Akoko politician was leaving his home town, some youths, carrying placards with inscriptions, such as “Ali must go”; “No way for Olanusi in Government House”; “Olanusi is a traitor” and “Jasper Ali must resign”, blocked his convoy.

The security personnel attached to the deputy governor shot into the air to scare away the protesters before the convoy could make its way through the road leading to the Government House.

Residents, who heard the gunshots, ran for cover, thinking it was a robbery.

Some of the protesters threw stones, water sachets and eggs at the vehicles, hitting one of the vehicles.

Olanusi, who spoke with reporters, accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko of using suspected political thugs to harass him.

“It is surprising that a governor is going around with thugs to attack me. You can see things yourself at the roundabout, the thugs he hired there and at the gate there, if I had not come with my convoy, they would have attacked me.

“I call on the assistant inspector general and the inspector general of Police to protect me. They should provide me with more mobile policemen. I am ready to resume duty as the elected deputy governor.

“Nobody has told me to resign. If they are talking about impeachment they should go about it in a lawful way, not that they should use thugs to attack me.

“They should realise that as Mimiko was elected, I Ali Olanusi, was equally elected. He cannot be chasing me with thugs.”

Speaking in an interview on a private radio station, Olanusi said some  hoodlums have been trailing him.

He urged the people to tell Mimiko to spare his life.

But the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Eni Akinsola, denied that political thugs were used to harass the deputy governor.

He said some people were trying to reverse the peace trend the state had been enjoying in the last six years.

According to him, Olanusi came to the town shooting into the air and it was aggrieved residents, who protested against the deputy governor.

Akinsola said people should accept democracy as a normal way of life, accept when their calculation go wrong and accept defeat.

The Nation gathered that electricity to the deputy governor’s official quarters has been disconnected.

Besides, the monthly salaries of his aides have been stopped.

  • Fayose, deputy, others lose bid to stop impeachment

Fayose, deputy, others lose bid to stop impeachment

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and his deputy, Olusola Kolapo, yesterday lost the bid to stop moves for their impeachment.

A Federal High Court in Abuja rejected their prayers for interim orders restraining House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Omirin and other All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola and others from proceeding with the impeachment plot.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in a ruling on their motion ex-parte, granted them leave for substituted services of all processes in relation to the suit, on the defendants.

The judge ordered Omirin and other defendants in the suit to appear before the court on April 16 to show why the restraining orders sought against them by the plaintiffs should not be granted.

The plaintiffs include Joseph Dele Olugbemi (who claimed to be Speaker), the  House of Assembly, Fayose and Kolapo.

Listed as defendants are Omirin, the inspector general of Police (IGP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the chief judge

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Ahmed Raji, while moving the ex-parte motion yesterday, argued that since Omirin was in court challenging his impeachment, he could not act under any guise as Speaker, while Olugbemi was acting in his place.

“The gravamen of our complaint is that a former Speaker (in the person of the first defendant) is trying to impersonate the first plaintiff (Dele), who is the Speaker by holding himself out as the Speaker.

“We urge the court to grant our prayers as contained in the motion in the name of public order, peace and safety of the people of Ekiti State,” Raji said.

He drew the judge’s attention to a newspaper publication that one person had been killed since the move to impeach the governor and his deputy began.

Justice Mohammed granted prayers one to four of the eight prayers contained in the ex-parte motion.

He ordered that court processes be served on Omirin and the chief judge through substituted means; by newspaper advertisement.

The judge also ordered that the chief judge be served through the chief registrar of the Ekiti High Court.

The judge refused the fifth to eight prayers, which were the plaintiffs’ key prayers. They include:

•An order of injunction restraining the first defendant and other errant members of the second plaintiff from taking any step or engaging in unlawful activities relating to the impeachment of Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Kolapo Olusola as governor and deputy governor.

•An interim order of injunction restraining the chief judge from taking any step or action in relation to the request of the first defendant for the purpose of appointing a panel of seven persons to investigate the purported allegations of gross misconduct against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Kolapo Olusola.

•An interim order of injunction restraining the police from continuing to abet, give cover, protection or lend credence to the activities of the first defendant and other errant members of the second plaintiff for self-help in disruption of legislative proceedings in the House of Assembly.

•An interim order of injunction setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and the steps taken by the first defendant and other errant members of the second plaintiff in relation to the purported issuance and service of the notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding impeachment proceedings against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Kolapo Olusola.

They intended that the prayers subsist pending the determination of their motion on notice for similar interlocutory injunctions, filed with the originating processes.

“Order is hereby made directing the first to fourth defendants (Omirin, IGP, INEC and Ekiti CJ) to appear before this court on April 16 and show cause why the interim order sought by the plaintiffs via an ex parte motion, dated April 7, should not be made by this court.”

Justice Mohammed ordered that hearing notices be served on the defendants and adjourned the matter till April 16.

  • Aliyu relocates deputy

The face-off between Niger State Governor Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and his deputy, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, has worsened, as the governor has directed the latter to move out of his office located in the Government House.

Ibeto was directed to relocate to ‘F’ Layout Quarters, about 1500 metres  from the Government House.

It was learnt that the directive was contained in a letter by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Sa’idu Ndako, last Friday.

He was given till the close of work today (Monday) to relocate to his new office.

Contacted on the phone last night, the deputy governor said he was yet to be formally informed of any relocation.

“I have not been in Minna since Friday. I just returned to town. I am yet to be informed, may be when I get to work tomorrow,” Ibeto said.

  • Between Amosun and deputy

SIR: I read yesterday in the newspapers about the complaints of the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Prince Segun Adesegun, against the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. The complaints concerned the welfare of the deputy.

It beats my imagination how such a simple and mundane matter could get to the press. Well, we are in the era of stomach infrastructure!

While I don’t want to be drawn into the politics of Ogun or what ulterior motives, if any, might have informed the  complaints, there is no one in this country who does not know that one of the most frugal governors in Nigeria is Amosun. He’s also one of the most hard-working governors.

I read in 2011 where he told his people that he and members of his team had come to make sacrifice. He said things were so bad in the state that they could not afford to live big. So I was not surprised when I read later that he slashed the salaries of political office holders.

The last time I saw the governor in Lagos, I observed he looked like President Obama of US. Work has really taken a toll on him.  His hair had turned grey yet I understand he’s just 50-something. The man, I’m told, works from morning till night and go out almost everyday to inspect projects, trekking in the sun and in the rain for hours. I’m not sure I ever watched on television the deputy suffering with the governor this way. A friend of mine from Ogun confirmed this observation.

The deputy governor complained of allowances for September and October but everyone in Nigeria knows what is happening at the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). I’m even surprised that there is no salary crisis in Ogun. For two months, governors have cried out for not getting allocation at all.

The good thing is that the deputy governor has not accused Amosun of living in luxury while asking others to tighten their belts. He has not accused the governor of constitutional breaches. He has also not complained of paying for his residence because I gathered that Amosun’s aides pay some money monthly from their salaries for the government quarters.

Nonetheless, the governor should look into the complaints and see what could be done because there are mischief-makers and political opportunists waiting to make a mountain out of a molehill and see a crisis where there is none in order to rig elections.

I also urge the deputy governor to see the governor and sort things out away from public glare. There’s good news coming from Ogun locally and internationally on a daily basis. They should keep the good flag flying.

  • Deputy Governor donates equipment to military hospital

Deputy Governor donates equipment to military hospital

The cordial relationship between the Imo State Government and security agencies in the state received a significant boost recently with the donation of multi-million Naira hospital equipment to the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze by the State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere.

According to the donor, the equipment, a digital Dental Chair, will improve health care delivery not only within the Brigade but also within the entire state.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony which was attended by members of 34 Artillary Brigade and neighbouring communities, the Garrison Commander, T. A. Adedoja, on behalf of the Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Bello, thanked Eze Madumere for his generosity.

He assured the Deputy Governor that the Military Hospital in the Brigade will make judicious use of the equipment for the benefit of patients.

In his speech, the Commander, recalled the challenges they experienced in assessing dental treatments as they had to rely on other hospitals for the dental needs of their patients.

Expressing the gratitude of the Brigade, he called on members of the state executive council and members of the public to visit the hospital for their medical needs, noting that the hospital is not only meant for the Army but also for patients from the host community and beyond.

He further reminded the guests of the significance of the hospital, which he said has become a major medical centre for accident victims along the Owerri-Elele Expressway.

The Deputy Governor, who expressed his happiness over the installation of the equipment, said the sorry state of the Dental Unit of the hospital motivated him to make the donation.

He said: “The sorry state of the Dental Unit of the hospital during my visit to the Artillery Brigade at the last Armed Forces Remembrance Day underscored the strategic importance of the Military Hospital. I therefore made a promise to help to procure befitting equipment because of the fact that the Army and people of the state rely on the hospital.”

He, however, gave the credit of the gesture to the Governor Rochas Okorocha, who he said, taught him to give and reach out to the downtrodden.

Madumere described the Governor as one of the rarest and greatest givers ever known; who he said has over 12, 000 students across the country he has adopted as his own children.

He assured of the state government’s collaboration in areas of strategic importance, especially the health sector and the sustenance of positive security status of the state.

He, therefore, called on well-meaning people of the state and other Nigerians to help assist in whatever way they can to help give succour to the hopeless.
