Eight terrorist leaders surrender in Northcentral, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Friday said that eight terrorist commanders in Northcentral region have surrendered to troops.

It said more have also indicated interest to surrender in the coming weeks.

Those that have surrendered, according to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Edward are: Yellow Jambros, Alhaji Mallam, Ardo Idi( alias Alhaji Lawal), Lawal Kwalba, Salkado, Yellow Ibrahim, Gana’e and Babangida.

Gen. Buba said the surrenderings were occassioned by overtures from the terrorist leadership based on troops onslaught against them.

He said “a non kinetic collaborative effort with stakeholders have been deployed to encourage the surrendering process.”

Gen. Buba, however, said that despite the surrendering of terrorist leaders, troops would continue “to sustain operational tempo in order to destroy or cause further surrendering by terrorists.”

Buba said.

    • Sahelian Jihadists, ISIS-linked islamists settle in Sokoto, Kebbi
    • ‘How they crossed into Northwest

The military yesterday unfolded a new terrorist group with base in Sokoto and Kebbi states in the Northwest where they are already causing havoc.

It announced the bid to take out the terrorists and obliterate them from Nigeria’s territory.

“Now that we know where they are, we are already going after them, and we will take them out,” Defence Headquarters spokesman Maj-Gen Edward Buba said yesterday.

According to him, the group Lukarawas, is linked to Islamic State (ISISI) and it members crossed into Nigeria from Niger Republic.

He added that when they settled in areas between Sokoto and Kebbi, the people did not raise the alarm or reported to security operatives or the military until they started their nefarious activities.

Gen. Buba said: “‘Lukarawas is affiliated with ISIS in Sahelian region, particularly Mali and Niger Republics. And this is the first time the Sahelian jihadists are making an incursion in our country.

“The terrorists took advantage of the gaps in cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger, and exploited difficult terrains to make incursions in remote areas in some North Western states to spread their ideology.”

The defence spokesman said the group was accommodated by the locals who initially thought that the group meant well for them, adding that they failed to report the movement to the military and security agencies.

General Buba added: “The people did not report on time until they started causing havoc and placing levies on them.

“Now that we know where they are, we are already going after them, and we will take them out.”

Buba gave assurance that troops had sustained Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) to degrade the terrorists.

He added that the terror group had continued to take advantage of the vast under-governed areas to hide and evade troops as well as harass the locals.

According to him, troops are locating them and eliminating the threat.

General Buba said that the new terror group in Sokoto and Kebbi States emerged from the Republic of Niger after the coup that led to the breakdown of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

In 2009, Nigeria got her first taste of terrorism when the Boko Haram group started its operation in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The activities of the group gained tempo after its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was killed.

Its members started with the slogan: Education (Boko) is Haram.

They launched an insurrection which spread like a wild fire in the Northeast.

The military is still battling to clear out the terrorist, fifteen years after.

While the military was battling Boko Haram in the Northeast, bandits were the problem in the Northwest until yesterday’s announcement of the Lukarawas terrorist in that geo-political zone.

    Nine wanted, 481 killed

Also yesterday, the DHQ said nine terrorist had been declared wanted in the Northeast.

They are:  Abu Khadijah, Abur Rahman, Dadi Gumba, Abu Yusuf, Musa Wa’a, Usman Kanin Shehu, Ibrahim Suyeka, Ba Sulhu, and Idris Taklakse.

General Buba said the wanted persons hail from the North East region, and have been causing havoc in the area.

He urged the public to provide useful information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals.

General Buba said troops neutralised 481 terrorists, arrested 741 criminals, rescued 492 kidnap victims, recovered 480 weapons and 9,026 ammunition during operations across the country last month.

He said “this another evidence of the sterling performance of the military against terrorist across states in the North since last year.”

Northcentral ‘gang leaders’ begging to surrender

General Buba said the military had opened its surrendering corridors to some Northcentral terror gang leaders who have indicated interest to drop their guns.

He said the terrorists have been under intense superior firefight of the military, losing fighters day-by-day, hence, had no other option that to surrender.

Buba said: “Like I have always said, the terrorists are left with the option of surrendering or killed in the battle field. There is no third option.

“For those that are now willing to surrender, surrendering is part of war. In war, there is a window of surrendering. When an enemy raises his hands up and drops his weapon, it is crime to shoot at him. And we are a professional force. They have indicated they want to surrender, but they are afraid if we will take them out in the process. But we have assured them that we will create a safe corridor for them to surrender and drop their arms, and we will receive them. Afterall, we are receiving surrendered terrorists in the Northest.”

No acting Army chief appointed, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ)  yesterday said nobody has been appointed as acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

According the military authorities, no such position exists in their hierarchy.

They also warned those calling for military intervention in politics to desist or be made to face the law.

The clarification came after reports in the social media about the alleged demise of the COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

The Nigerian Army authority  at the weekend clarified that Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja was on medical vacation abroad. It explained that before the COAS proceeded on leave, necessary protocols were put in place.

In yesterday’s statement, the DHQ said: “The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to clarify that it has not announced the appointment of any senior officer as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), contrary to speculation by certain media outlets. For the record, no such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is currently on a well-deserved rest as part of his 2024 annual leave. The Armed Forces of Nigeria is professionally managed and all the Service Chiefs are performing their duties as stipulated in the Constitution of the FGN. Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing routine briefs to the COAS in accordance with standard military procedures.

“The DHQ urges individuals spreading unfounded rumours to desist from doing so immediately. The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume normal duties at the end of his leave.

“Additionally, those advocating for a military takeover, as seen in a viral video, should be aware that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution.”

The DHQ assured the people  that the military was committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy, and loyal to President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It said: “The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity.

“To this end, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country.”

Army commander probed for alleged administrative fraud will face Court Martial, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said that Brigadier General MA Sadiq, the Commander of 3 Brigade Kano, suspended for alleged administrative fraud will face military court martial.

Sadiq was suspended from command for allegedly diverting palliatives meant for soldiers, and other misconduct.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Edward Buba, announced this on Thursday, October 10, during a briefing at the DHQ, Abuja.

He said: “Regarding the welfare of troops, I must tell you that when you look at the high command of the military, beginning from the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and the service chiefs, the common denominator among them is that all of them have operational experience. They have being to the battlefield.

“They know what the needs of the troops are and they have made it their priority. I can assure you that the military high command doesn’t play with welfare.

“I know where you are going when you ask about the welfare of troops. It is the case of the Brigadier General who has been relieved of his command based on issues surrounding welfare and other misdeeds.

    • Military debunks abduction of 150 claim in Sokoto

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has explained why troops demobilised two Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs) in Zamfara State.

It said troops were unable to extricate the two military vehicles from where they were stuck in a swampy terrain during operations against bandits in the area.

The DHQ said the two MRAPs were bogged down during troops fighting patrol in Zurmi Local Government Area on August 29 due to the swampy terrain occasioned by persistent rain.

The military high command gave the explanation in a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba.

The statement reads: “On August 29, 2024, at about 1700 hours (5 p.m), troops of Operation Hadarin Daji deployed at FOB Zurmi in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, embarked on fighting patrol to dislodge terror gathering at Kwashabawa Village. Troops engaged the terrorists en route the location.

“During the fight, while attempting to outflank the terrorists, Quantity 2 of troops MRAPs got bogged down due to the swampy terrain occasioned by the rain. While troops tried to extricate the MRAPs, the terrorists massed up, knowing the challenge troops had encountered with the MRAPs.

“Subsequently, troops dismounted and demobilised the MRAPs, when efforts to backload them were futile. The sad demobilisation of the MRAPs by troops was to prevent it from being useful to the terrorists after abandonment. These situations further illustrate the effect of weather in changing conditions for ground operations.”

The DHQ also released a trending video spread by the terrorists claiming to have engaged in mass killing.

Gen. Buba said at no time did the terrorists kill hundreds of civilians in Sokoto State, as claimed by the terrorist in the video.

He said: “It must be noted that the incident never took place in Nigeria. Rather, it sadly took place in a nearby African country faced with terrorism.

“The terrorists, in an act of desperation, tried to manipulate the situation to mislead gullible members of the public. The Armed Forces unequivocally state that at no time were 150 persons abducted in Gobir, Sokoto State.

“The rumoured abduction was deliberately planted by the terrorists to undermine troops winning efforts and cover up terrorist weakness.”

Gen. Buba urged the public to be “circumspect of the antics of the terrorists to propagate misinformation, disinformation and fake news as part of their war propaganda effort”.

He said despite the dynamics of the environment of the operation, troops retained “operational flexibility to make adjustments in achieving the strategic objective of winning the war”.

The Defence Headquarters said that the inability of troops to extricate the two Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAPs) stuck in swampy terrain during operations against bandits in Zamfara State was the reason the equipment were demobilised.

It said the two MRAPs were bogged down during troops fighting patrol in Zurmi local government area on Wednesday, August 29, due to the swampy terrain occasioned by persisted rain in the area.

The Military High Command said this in a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations Maj-Gen Edward Buba on Monday, September 2.

There were viral videos of bandits claiming they seized the MRAPs from troops during operations in the state.

But Maj.Gen. Buba dismissed the bandits’ claim, saying the bandits wanted to take advantage of the situation to mislead the public.

    • Successful airstrikes recorded near Lake Chad’s Tumbuns excite NAF
    • Nigeria, Niger military sign MoU to strengthen security
    • Troops kill eight bandits in Kaduna, arrest two terror suspects’ suppliers in Borno

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said terrorists operating under Boko Haram, the Islamic State West African Province (SWAP) and other groups in the Northeast are surrendering en masse due.

It said the terrorists could not withstand the superior firepower the troops are unleashing on them, thus forcing them to have a change of heart.

The military high command, which spoke through the Director of its Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, stressed that the military aimed to replicate the same in other theatres of operation to restore peace and safety to all parts of the country.

It said ongoing operations across the country have “significantly diminished the military capabilities of terror groups and denied the terrorist the ability to carry out major offensives”.

The DHQ added: “The situation experienced mostly these days are low level skirmishes and attacks on soft targets.

“We are aware that we are dealing with a shrewd, ruthless and brutal enemy that must be stopped from their acts of terror. Accordingly, the Armed Forces are prepared to act with the relevant level of force that would be needed to dismantle these terror groups.

“Troops’ strategy is to undermine the abilities of these terror groups and create conditions whereby they cannot carry out acts of terror or harm citizens. Accordingly, the military has prioritised targeting the terrorist leaders, commanders, foot soldiers as well as their collaborators.”

Also, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said the movement of terrorists to higher and drier grounds due to flooding in Tumbuns near the Lake Chad region was responsible for the success of its recent airstrikes in the area.

It said persistent rainfall had caused flooding in the terrorists’ enclave, which forced them to seek refuge outside but made it possible for NAF to conduct precision airstrikes.

NAF’s spokesman Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Edward Gabkwet said this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “To confirm this, the NAF conducted Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions over the location on August 22, 24, and 26, which revealed several terrorists with some of their salvaged belongings tucked within four makeshift accommodations, some concealed under trees and thick vegetation.

“Consequently, precision airstrikes were authorised on the selected target areas, engaging and destroying most of the structures.

“A thick black smoke from one of the destroyed structures signified a storage area, probably designated as an armoury or a logistics storage area. Several terrorists were also neutralised in the process.

“It is important to note that the excess rainfall and swampy terrain may have inadvertently pushed the terrorists out of hiding, but it was the swift and decisive action of the NAF that took advantage of the situation to strike a significant blow against them.”

Also, the Nigerian military and its Nigerien counterpart have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen bilateral relationship and explore opportunities to strengthen security cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces, General Moussa Salaou Barmou, signed the agreement in Niamey, Republic of Niger.

A statement in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, said: “The Defence Chiefs acknowledged the significant impact of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons on security. They also recognised that the widespread accessibility of these weapons contributes to heightened instability and conflict in the region.

“They further agreed to intensify their efforts in curbing the illicit flow of small arms and light weapons, while pledging to collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing border security and supporting regional and international efforts to control and reduce the spread of these weapons.”

Also, troops on fighting patrols have neutralised eight bandits in Birnin Gwari Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.

The state’s Overseeing Commissioner in the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, announced this yesterday in Kaduna.

He said the troops also recovered ammunitions and motorcycles during the operation.

Aruwan said the troops started the fighting patrol in Kampanin Doka general area, where they had an encounter with bandits.

“On securing and searching the area, the troops recovered the following: three AK-47 rifles with eight AK-47 magazines – four empty and four loaded – with a total of 120 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition; one magazine carrier, six motorcycles, three mobile phones, two Baofeng radio sets and three pairs of civilian clothes.

“During the concluding leg of the patrol, further contact was made with bandits around Gayam general area. The troops neutralised one, as others were suspected to have escaped with gunshot wounds.”

In Borno State, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said it arrested two suspects for allegedly supplying illicit drugs to the Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in the Lake Chad region.

The suspects were also alleged to be supplying uniforms and flag materials to the insurgents.

A statement yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital, by spokesman of the MNJTF, Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said: “In a separate operation, another suspect was arrested along the Gubio-Damasak road.

“The suspected terrorists’ operative was driving a blue Toyota pickup vehicle with registration (Yobe) JAK 49 XA and was found with two sacks containing 19 bundles of clothing materials…”

It said the recent rejig of its operations in the region is yielding positive results, assuring that troops would continue the onslaught against oil thieves and economic saboteurs until the nation’s crude oil production target is achieved and exceeded.

The military high command, which spoke through the Director of Defence Media Operations Maj-Gen Edward Buba, at a press briefing on Thursday, August 15, in Abuja, added that troops remained focused on defeating every adversary of the state.

The Nation reports that following the directive of President Bola Tinubu that crude exploration and exploitation in the Niger Delta region be made seamless, security chiefs harmonized their strategies toward clearing crude oil thieves, pipeline vandals, and other criminal elements fleecing the country.

Also, last month the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen disclosed that this year Nigeria had lost about $10 billion in revenue to crude oil theft, vandalism, and other forms of sabotage in the oil and gas sector.

The military high command said it was constantly assessing “our actions, adjusting and amending our operations to annihilate terrorists across.

“Accordingly, troops are working decisively to kill the terrorist, stop the insecurity, and ensure the safety of citizens across the country.”

Gwoza attacks: DHQ vows to ‘take out’ perpetrators

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has vowed that troops would to take out the terrorists responsible for the suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State.

It said the ‘fate of the terrorists that perpetrated these insecurity will be violent and short’ as troops would go after them and eliminate them in the battlefield.

A statement yesterday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, said despite the recent attack, the military remains resolute to end terrorism in the North East and other parts of the country.

It, however, urged the people to stand united, remain vigilant, and continue to support efforts of the military in securing the country.

Recall that 32 people died and 52 sustained injuries in the multiple suicide attacks in Gwoza on June 29.

The DHQ said it lost a soldier and two members of the hybrid forces.

The statement reads: “The Armed Forces view every life lost in the ongoing war, whether civilian or military, as an immense tragedy. The sad loss of lives is a tragedy for the society, community and country.

“Since the country is in a state of war with terrorists, citizens must understand that this despicable act is a response to recent successes in ongoing military operations. Recent military onslaught against the terrorists had decapitated their leadership, depleted their resources, reduced their support base and reduced their influence.
