  • Ekiti dissolves caretaker committees

Kkiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi yesterday dissolved caretaker committees in the 16 local government councils.

In a letter to the House of Assembly, the governor urged the House to reconstitute fresh committees, so as not to allow a vacuum in the administration of councils.

The tenure of the dissolved committees expired on Tuesday.

Majority Leader of the House Churchill Adedipe moved the motion for the approval of the reconstitution, hinging it on Section 4, Sub-section 4 of the Local Government Transition Committee Law of Ekiti State.

The motion was supported by the House.

Also yesterday, the governor approved the re-composition of the caretaker committees in the councils.

The committees would be inaugurated today at the Jibowu Hall of the Government House by 9am.

  • Fayemi dissolves Executive Council

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has dissolved the State Executive Council.

This is the administration’s first major move to reshuffle the council since its inception in 2010, although there was a slight swapping of offices last year.

According to sources, the announcement, which was made by the governor at the end of the Executive Council meeting yesterday, jolted the members, who had just resumed from the New Year holiday.

Though a statement by the governor’s media aide, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, was silent on the number of affected commissioners and special advisers, it was gathered that they are 37.

While it was generally felt that majority of the exco members would make it back, some noted that five might be removed.

Fayemi thanked the commissioners for their support and directed them to hand over government property in their possession to either the permanent secretaries in their ministries or other senior officials as the case might apply.

The statement reads: “The governor thanks all the executive members for their support in the last two years. The dissolution and the re-constitution that would follow are aimed at revitalising the administration and positioning it for greater performance.

“This is a moment for transformation in all we are doing and not about an individual not pulling his/her weight enough.”

    •ACN denies rift

The Chairman of Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, Prince Saheed Popoola, has dissolved the council’s five-member executive council.

In a statement in Offa, the council chief explained that the dissolution was routine.

He thanked the former exco members for their service to the council and wished them well in their future endeavours.

The dissolved exco comprised the Secretary to the Local Government and four supervisory councillors in charge of Works, Health, Education and Agriculture.

Popoola, the only council chairman elected on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), is expected to swear in a new cabinet this week.

Also, Rafiu Ajakaye, the Media Ade to Kwara ACN governorship candidate in last year’s poll, Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN), has denied a report of alleged rift between the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, and Belgore.

Ajakaye said: “The party remains very much intact. Alhaji Mohammed and Belgore (SAN) talk everyday on how to move the party forward. But we leave people, as is typical in politics, to speculate all they want. We are not ruling out the possibility of some persons in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sponsoring negative reports for reasons we all know. They can go as far as spreading rumour of a non-existent fracas to cause disaffection. But the party remains intact and the leadership is cordial. There is no cause for alarm. We urge party faithful to ignore such report. Party re-engineering is going on and the party, we are sure, will emerge stronger.”
