U.S imposes new ‘America First’ tariffs

The United States has approved controversial tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels.

The move is in line with President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy, which aims to protect local manufacturers from foreign competition, the BBC reports.

A spokesman said the administration would “always defend American workers, farmers, ranchers and businessmen.”

But China and South Korea, whose manufacturers will be most heavily affected, criticised the move.

U.S officials said more trade enforcement actions would follow.

Mr. Trump has talked about taking the action ever since coming to office.

In his inauguration speech a year ago he promised to protect U.S borders from other countries “making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.”

The actions are being seen as the President’s most significant trade moves since his decision to pull the U.S out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal (TPP) and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The tougher policy was approved by President Trump after the U.S International Trade Commission found local manufacturers were being hurt by cheaper imports.

The tariffs set on solar panels were lower than domestic U.S producers had hoped for, but the duties on washing machines and parts were steeper than expected – adding as much as 50 per cent in some cases.

  • Nigerians live in huts – Donald Trump (2)

In 2015, China’s President Xi Jinping went on an authentic world shuttle diplomacy.  He travelled to the far-flung continents of the world to help change the global image of China as the world’s producer – of substandard goods which it forces down the world’s throat!

My reading of his new message was that China was a willing and able world development partner.

And so from the United Kingdom to the United Nations, Mr. Xi was given royal treatment, and his message was received with universal acceptance (the result: in 2017 the respected American journal  Time called Xi the world’s most powerful man).

Specifically, the capstone of the 1 year diplomatic shuttle was the 2015 Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCON) in South Africa.

That meeting was actually a summit in which 50 African Leaders including President Buhari met with the Chinese President and his top officials.  There, President Xi doled out 60 billion US dollars across the African Countries in far-reaching development aid different from classical aid handouts.  Recall that during his UNGA address same year, President Xi had offered $100m to the AU for a standby force against any emergencies in Africa.

During the CGTN (then CCTV) coverage of FOCON, I watched with my two little eyes where the presenter of a discussion panel expressed has dismay at how Africans spend all day dancing in the streets when at ‘home’ they ‘lived under trees’.  His sentiment was shared by other discussants; they all feared for the judicious use or otherwise of the funds from China to the African countries.

That Chinese presenter’s description of Africans living under trees is effectively a signpost of the failure of Nigeria’s ex-president’s shuttle diplomacy junkets.  I daresay it not only gives a global voice to a universally held nation, but it actually makes Mr. Trump’s assertion very charitable: that Nigerians live in huts; and why do Americans want all these Africans over there.

It is just that Mr. Trump has become to Africans, The Man To Hate by his graphic description of African countries (sh—holes); I’d rather call them hell holes, here!

This TrumpHate Cause I call it was further strengthened a fortnight ago when a new book Fire & Fury was released which seeks to question Mr. Trump’s mental health.  But it turns out that the book was filled with detected lies and inaccuracies.  The writer Michael Wolf was interviewed recently on CNN.  The man came across as a mumbling, bumbling off beat and quirky fellow; seemingly unstable himself!

Donald Trump on the other hand is a universal icon and an international brand.  The American presidency is simply an additional feather to his cap-NOT his introduction to the world stage.  And so it is a given that whatever Trump says will ALWAYS receive international attention, so, his ‘hellhole comment’ needs to examined without sentiment and in its context for its merits as well as its demerits; for the sake of correction, and action.

First off, on the level of diplomacy the statement could be taken as a faux pas.  But MIGRATION THE WORLD OVER HAS FAR OUTPACED DIPLOMACY!  IT IS WAY PAST TIME FOR A NEW WORLD ORDER!!

In any case for the purpose of this topic the lingo is Love The Message, Not The Messenger.

I got a whatsapp post recently titled Donald J. Trump’s Definition for a Sh—hole Country.  It listed 11 qualities, I will sight just the first 2.

    (1) Your leaders steal your money and hide it in other countries.

    (2) Your children can’t find jobs so they cross the desert, get sold as slaves or make it to the Ocean and cross in dinghies to Europe to do menial jobs…

    Nigerians: does THAT SOUND FAMILIAR?

Mr. Trump’s actions on Immigration might surprise a casual observer but he is in fact guided by statistical data from his Domestic Policy Adviser.  It is no wonder that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, after his time as Nigeria president said that he had a battery of advisers – who had all the while given him useless advice.

Well, when people who could have been included in positions of political appointment are overlooked, the ‘useless ones’ appointed can only give a President what they have!

Mr. Trump also works with the U.S Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the State Department.

All this talk of America one might say: yes, that’s because at some point we Nigerians need to recall that we are practicing the American Presidential system of Government.

May I ask, does the Nigerian Ministry of the Interior have ANYTHING on migration?

Nigeria is CURRENTLY flooded by Cameroonian migrants – is anything being done about that beyond one head count, months after their arrival? Nope, I know because I live right by them!

Can the Interior Minister tell us our current population figure?  You guessed right again – Nope!

Please note that these questions are not being raised to put any minister on the spot, far be it from me; it just that I believe that even a working figure of the number of jobless youths would help in knowing how to tackle the ongoing Libya desert Nigerian migration and consequent African slave trade.

Prof. Timothy Nubi, a lecturer in Housing says in Nigeria, the slum population is about 70%.  The Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun says the housing deficit is 17 million (To put that in perspective, that’s about the size of 5 other African countries).

Shouldn’t we in Nigeria be terribly bothered about the awful way we live in Nigeria?  What is being done to ameliorate the housing deficit?

This column did say it a long time ago that with the astronomical national housing deficit, there is a burning need to split up the current Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

Criss-crossing Nigeria back during the last presidential campaigns, I was privileged once to be one of the speakers to campaign on a podium where the current Sports Minister; Mallam Shehu Sani (now Senator Sani) and myself all spoke for the then presidential hopeful Muhammadu Buhari. On Tuesday on the Senate floor, Senator Sani said Senators won’t say anything because they were only after their re-election (speaking on the Benue Killings).

But all of this should constitute cause for concern not cause for pouncing on an American President who is taking whatever steps that are needed to protect his own country.

Trump announces ‘Fake News’ award winners, CNN, NYT top list

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday night announced the winners of his highly anticipated ‘Fake News Awards’ with CNN and New York Times emerging top on the list.

Trump crashed the Republican Party’s website on which he posted the list of the award winners moments after he tweeted the link announcing the winners, due to the high volume of traffic.

“And the FAKE NEWS winners are…https://gop.com/the-highly-anticipated-2017-fake-news-awards/ …” Trump tweeted.

Trump had on Jan. 2, said: “I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5 p.m. Subjects will cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media. Stay tuned!”

However, on Jan. 7, he said: “The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, Jan. 17, rather than this coming Monday. The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!”

Out of the 11 ‘fake news reports’ listed on the award, CNN won four, New York Times clinched two, while TIME magazine, ABC News, Newsweek and Washington Post won an award each.

The full list retrieved from the archive of the website read: “The New York Times’ Paul Krugman claimed on the day of President Trump’s historic, landslide victory that the economy would never recover”.

It also explained that “ABC News’ Brian Ross CHOKES and sends markets in a downward spiral with false report”.

It added that “CNN FALSELY reported that candidate Donald Trump and his son Donald J. Trump, Jr. had access to hacked documents from WikiLeaks.

According to it, “TIME FALSELY reported that President Trump removed a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. from the Oval Office.

“Washington Post FALSELY reported the President’s massive sold-out rally in Pensacola, Florida was empty. Dishonest reporter showed picture of empty arena HOURS before crowd started pouring in.

“CNN FALSELY edited a video to make it appear President Trump defiantly overfed fish during a visit with the Japanese prime minister. Japanese prime minister actually led the way with the feeding.

“Newsweek FALSELY reported that Polish First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda did not shake President Trump’s hand.”

“CNN FALSELY reported that former FBI Director James Comey would dispute President Trump’s claim that he was told he is not under investigation.

“The New York Times FALSELY claimed on the front page that the Trump administration had hidden a climate report.”

“And last, but not least: “RUSSIA COLLUSION!” Russian collusion is perhaps the greatest hoax perpetrated on the American people. THERE IS NO COLLUSION!”

The post also went on to list 10 Trump administration’s major successes, adding “while the media spent 90 per cent of the time focused on negative coverage or fake news, the President has been getting results”.

It said the economy had created nearly two million jobs and gained over eight trillion dollars in wealth since the Trump’s inauguration.

It said African Americans and Hispanics were enjoying the lowest unemployment rate in recorded history adding, Trump signed historic tax cuts and relief for hardworking Americans not seen since President Reagan.

“President Trump’s plan to cut regulations has exceeded “2 out for every 1 in” mandate, issuing 22 deregulatory actions for every one new regulatory action.

“The President has unleashed an American energy boom by ending Obama-era regulations, approving the Keystone pipeline, auctioning off millions of new acres for energy exploration, and opening up ANWR.”

The list also included that ISIS was in retreat, having been crushed in Iraq and Syria.

President Trump followed through on his promise to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and instructed the State Department to begin to relocate the Embassy, it explained.

“With President Trump’s encouragement, more member nations are paying their fair share for the common defense in the NATO alliance.

“Signed the Veterans Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act to allow senior officials in the VA to fire failing employees and establishes safeguards to protect whistleblowers.”

“President Trump kept his promise and appointed Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court,” Trump’s concluded.

UN Palestinian agency calls for donations after U.S. freezes funds

UNRWA, the UN refugee agency responsible for Palestinian, will launch a global fundraiser to make up for tens of millions of dollars withheld by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The UNRWA Commissioner-General, Pierre Krahenbuhl, said in a statement on Wednesday that the organisation was faced with “the most dramatic financial crisis in its history.”

He called donors and host countries to create “new funding alliances”, saying a global fundraising campaign would be launched in the coming days.

The U.S. government, on Tuesday, earmarked 60 million dollars for the agency for 2018, saying it would withhold 65 million dollars.

Krahenbuhl added that the U.S. move would stoke “further radicalisation” throughout the Middle East.

UNRWA supports some five million Palestinian in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories.

During the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced or forced to flee. UNRWA also supports their descendants.

  • U.S. embassy will move to Jerusalem within a year

U.S. embassy will move to Jerusalem within a year

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that the U.S. will move its embassy from Tel Aviv  to Jerusalem within a year.

The prime minister’s timeline drastically differs from that offered earlier by White House officials, who said the move would take at least three to four years due to stringent security measures and other requirements.

Netanyahu made this known to Israeli reporters on a flight from Dehli to Gujarat during a state visit to India, the Times of Israel reported.

A spokesman for the prime minster confirmed the content.

“My confident assessment is that it will move much faster than people think, within a year from today,” Netanyahu said, according to the Times of Israel.

President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Dec. 6 and initiated a process to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

Israel occupied the eastern half of Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognised.

Israel has long claimed that Jerusalem as its “undivided capital,” while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Trump’s controversial decision sparked protests in some countries and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution.

The recognition was welcomed in Israel, and Guatemala has since announced it will follow the US in moving its embassy to the city.

Arab foreign ministers are set to meet on Feb. 1 in Cairo to discuss steps against Trump’s recognition, the Arab League had earlier said.

  • Nigeria summons U.S ambassador over Trump’s ‘shithole’ comment

Nigeria summons U.S ambassador over Trump’s ‘shithole’ comment

The Federal Government on Monday summoned the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, over President Donald Trump’s alleged derogatory comment about Africa.

Trump was widely quoted in media report as referring to Africa nations as “shithole countries.”

However, the U.S President has denied making such comment.

Nigeria viewed the alleged statement as hurtful and offensive if truly it came from Trump.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in a closed- door meeting with the U.S ambassador sought clarification on the remark.

Symington, who was out of the country, was represented by the Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S Embassy in Abuja, Amb. David Young.

According to a statement signed by the ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr. Tope Ade Elias-Fatile, the U.S Deputy Chief of Mission said his country continue to hold Nigeria in very high regards.

Young also pointed out that there were several contradicting accounts by those present on Trump’s remark.

The statement reads: “The Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, today (Monday) summoned the U.S ambassador to Nigeria to clarify issues regarding the remarks credited to the U.S President, Donald Trump, in which he was widely quoted in media report as referring to Africa countries as ‘shithole countries’ and which he denied.

“The U.S ambassador, who was out of Nigeria, was represented by Amb. David Young, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the United States of America in Abuja.

“The Minister sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks, stressing that if they were true, they were deeply hurtful and offensive and unacceptable, especially given the very warm and cordial relations that presently exist between the Nigeria government and the government of the United States of America.”

Africans, others rally against Trump ’s racist remarks

The Africans in the diaspora would on Monday join their counterparts from Haiti, El Salvador and other countries in a rally to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump ’s alleged racist remarks.

The rally would also hold in New Jersey, Atlanta, Houston and across other major U.S. cities.

The organisers of the event urged all people of African descent and others to attend the rally to “reject the denigration President Trump uttered against us”.

The U.S. president reportedly made the comment during a meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office on Thursday.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump allegedly said after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from the countries in question.

The protest tagged: ‘Rally against Trump’ at Time Square on Monday, would commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day., which celebrates the death of the civil rights icon.

The Day is a Federal holiday in the U.S. falling on the third Monday of every January and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of King, who was tragically assassinated on April 4, 1968.

“In response to the comments made by President Trump on Thursday about countries including Africa and Haiti, please Join Mayor Bill de Blasio in denouncing Trump at a rally at Time Square on Monday.

“On MLK Day, New York City will take a stand for our sisters and brothers from Haiti, throughout Africa, El Salvador and other nations in the diaspora that have become targets of President Trump’s hatred and bigotry.

“This moment is too critically important for us not to come together.

“Let’s honour Dr King’s birthday by showing the world the progress being made to help achieve his dream,” Famod Konneh, Bronx Borough Director, New York City Office of the Mayor, said.

However, Trump had, while signing the proclamation for King’s Day on Wednesday, said the late civil rights leader “dedicated his life to a vision: that all Americans would live free from injustice and enjoy equal opportunity as children of God”.

“His strong, peaceful, and lifelong crusade against segregation and discrimination brought our Nation closer to the founding ideals set forth in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

“Today, as we come together to honour Dr King, we know that America is stronger, more just, and more free because of his life and work,” Trump said.

  • I am not a racist – Trump

    I am not a racist – Trump

United States President, Donald Trump, has denied that he is racist, after a row broke out over his alleged use of the word “shithole” to describe African nations.

Mr Trump reportedly used the term last week during a bipartisan Oval Office meeting on immigration reform.

He has now told journalists: “I am not a racist. I’m the least racist person you have ever interviewed.”

It is the first time the President has responded directly to the racism accusations, the BBC reports.

He made the denial to White House press pool reporters at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in Florida on Sunday night.

The row broke out after lawmakers from both parties visited the President on Thursday to work on a proposal for a bipartisan immigration deal.

In recent weeks the Trump administration has been withdrawing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from a number of nationalities currently living in the country.

Reports later emerged in U.S media that Mr. Trump had asked during the meeting: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

Mr. Trump was said to have told them that instead of granting temporary residency to citizens of countries hit by natural disasters, war or epidemics, the U.S should be taking in migrants from countries like Norway.

  • Indonesian islamists accuse Facebook of discrimination

Indonesian islamists accuse Facebook of discrimination

Several hundred Indonesian Islamists held a protest outside Facebook ’s headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, accusing the social media giant of discrimination.

The protesters, many dressed in white and including members of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front ( FPI ), marched from a mosque to Facebook’s offices in the capital of the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country.

They also accused Facebook of blocking some pages operated by hardline groups for allegedly spreading hate.

“We want to remind Facebook to remain neutral and balanced,” Slamet Maarif, a spokesman for FPI, told reporters.

“There are many accounts that spread hate about Islam, ulamas, that are allowed to operate. There are accounts that talk about Islamic humanitarian aid, those are blocked,” said Maarif.

He said that the group still planned to use Facebook and intended to open new accounts.

Facebook said its policy was to delete content that violated its community standards.

“Our community standards are made to prevent organizations or individuals that urge hate speech or violence against those who hold different views,” said a company representative, who declined to be identified.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s communications ministry, Semuel Pangerapan, said, “We have never requested that FPI’s accounts be closed.”

Some Islamist groups in Indonesia use social media extensively and FPI usually has about 100 accounts on Facebook, as well as on other social media platforms such as Twitter.

The rally was peaceful, though more than 1,200 police officers were brought in to guard the offices, media said.

Indonesians are avid users of social media and Facebook had 115 million users in the second quarter of 2017, according to media citing its country manager, ranking the country fourth globally after the United States, India and Brazil.

Some of the protesters on Friday made live video streams of the rally to air via Facebook.

The vast majority of Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam, though a reputation for religious tolerance has come under scrutiny as hardline groups muscle their way into public and political life in the young democracy.

President Joko Widodo has expressed concerns over hoax stories and hate speech spread online and has pledged to “clobber” any group threatening to destroy Indonesia’s tradition of pluralism and moderate Islam.

At a rally late 2017 in Jakarta by Muslims opposing President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a body of Muslim clerics urged a boycott of U.S. and Israel products if Trump did not revoke his action.

So far there has been no indication the measure will gain traction and Indonesia’s vice president said calls to stop using U.S. goods and technology were misguided.

  • Trump questions taking of immigrants from ‘shithole countries’

Trump questions taking of immigrants from ‘shithole countries’

President Donald Trump has questioned why the U.S. would want to have immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as “shithole countries,” according to two sources familiar with the comments.

Trump’s remarks, made in the White House, came as Democratic Senator Dick Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham briefed the president on a newly drafted immigration bill being touted by a bipartisan group of senators, according to the sources, who asked not to be identified.

Sources said government officials were present during the conversation.

The lawmakers were describing how certain immigration programs operate, including one to give safe haven in the United States to people from countries suffering from natural disasters or civil strife.

One of the sources who was briefed on the conversation said that Trump said, “Why do we want all these people from Africa here?

“They’re shithole countries … We should have more people from Norway.”

The second source familiar with the conversation, said Trump, who has vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration, also questioned the need for Haitians in the United States.

Many Democrats and some Republican lawmakers slammed the president for his remarks.

Republican U.S. Representative Mia Love, a daughter of Haitian immigrants, said the comments were “unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values”.

Love called on Trump to apologise to the American people and to the countries he denigrated.

Another Republican Representative, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who was born in Cuba and whose south Florida district includes many Haitian immigrants, said: “Language like that shouldn’t be heard in locker rooms and it shouldn’t be heard in the White House.”

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a frequent Trump critic, said the president’s comment “smacks of blatant racism, the most odious and insidious racism masquerading poorly as immigration policy.”

In an apparent response to his critics, Trump took to Twitter late on Thursday night.

Trump tweeted: “The Democrats seem intent on having people and drugs pour into our country from the Southern Border, risking thousands of lives in the process.

“It is my duty to protect the lives and safety of all Americans. We must build a Great Wall, think Merit and end Lottery & Chain. USA!”

The programme that was being discussed at the White House is called Temporary Protected Status.

In November, the Trump administration decided to end the status for immigrants from Haiti and Nicaragua.

It gave the approximately 59,000 Haitian immigrants who had been granted the status until July 2019 to return home or legalise their presence in the U.S.

Nicaraguans were given until January 2019.

On Monday, Trump moved to end the status for immigrants from El Salvador, which could result in 200,000 Salvadorans legally in the United States being deported, beginning in September of 2019.
