Trump hosts Buhari, other African leaders, lauds Ebola defeat

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday hosted President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders to a working lunch on the sidelines of the 72nd UN General Assembly in New York.

Trump, who said he was greatly honoured to host the lunch, which took place at the New York Palace Hotel, described African leaders as “partners for promoting prosperity and peace.

“I’m greatly honoured to be joined by leaders of Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda and South Africa. In particular, I want to thank President Condé, who is representing the African Union,” he said.

“In this room, I see partners for promoting prosperity and peace on a range of economic, humanitarian and security issues.

“We hope to extend our economic partnerships with countries who are committed to self-reliance and to fostering opportunities for job creation in both Africa and the United States.

“Africa has tremendous business potential. I have so many friends going to your countries, trying to get rich. I congratulate you.

“They’re spending a lot of money. But it does – it has tremendous business potential and representing huge amounts of different markets. And for American firms it’s really become a place that they have to go – that they want to go.

“Six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies are in Africa. Increasing American trade and investment across diverse industries – including agriculture, energy, transportation, healthcare, travel, and tourism – will further transform lives throughout the continent.”

He said “Africa, I have to say, is a continent of tremendous potential. The outlook is bright. I look forward to hearing from you and your advice during the meal.”

The U.S. leader said  he was eager to closely know more African leaders! noting tha “I really want to congratulate you – growing very fast economically and in every other way. You’ve done a terrific job, you’ve had some tremendous obstacles placed in your path, but you have done really an absolutely incredible job.”

Trump pledged that the U.S. would partner with African countries and organisations, like the African Union, leading successful efforts to end violence to prevent the spread of terrorism, and to respond to humanitarian crises.

“I commend your troops currently serving in the field. Very brave. Very, very brave what they’re going through. But we cannot have prosperity if we’re not healthy.

“We will continue our partnership on critical health initiatives. Uganda has made incredible strides in the battle against HIV/AIDS. In Guinea and Nigeria, you fought a horrifying Ebola outbreak.

“Namibia’s health system is increasingly self-sufficient. My Secretary of Health and Human Services will be traveling to Africa to promote our Global Health Security Agenda.”

The U.S. leader, however, regretted that too many people were suffering from conflict in Africa, pointing out the Central African Republic, the Congo, Libya, Mali, Somalia and South Sudan, among others, “were going through dangerous times.”

He noted that terrorist groups, such as ISIS, al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, and al Qaeda threaten African peace, adding that the U.S. was proud to work with African leaders toward eradicating terrorist safe havens, to cut off their finances, and to discredit their depraved ideology.

“And a number of you have told me – actually, last night – that we’ve been doing a very good job over the last six or seven months in particular,” he said.

Trump said the U.S. was closely monitoring and deeply disturbed by ongoing violence in South Sudan and in the Congo, adding that U.S. had continued to provide humanitarian assistance but real results in halting the conflicts would require an African-led peace process and sincere commitment of all parties involved.

“And I know you’re working on that, and you’re working on that very hard to assist in these efforts, I’m sending Ambassador Nikki Haley to Africa to discuss avenues of conflict and resolution and most importantly, prevention”.

Trump, at the dinner attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and the Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande, also discussed Africa-U.S. partnership against the nuclear weapons threat from North Korea, describing it “a global challenge.

“Today, the world faces enormous security threat from North Korea. We must all stand together and be accountable in implementing UN sanctions and resolutions in response to North Korea’s hostile and menacing actions.

“We believe that a free, independent and democratic nation, in all cases, is the best vehicle for human happiness and success. Thank you for joining me for this critical discussion about challenges and opportunities in our nations”, Trump said.

  • Trump pledges $1m of his personal money to Harvey relief

Trump pledges $1m of his personal money to Harvey relief

American President Donald Trump will pledge one million dollars of his own money to relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Thursday.

“I am happy to tell you that he (Trump) would like to join in the efforts that a lot of the people that we have seen across this country do.

“He is pledging one million dollars of personal money to the fund,” Sanders told reporters at a White House briefing.

More than 4,500 people and 113 pets stranded by Hurricane Harvey have been rescued by the U.S. special flood response teams this week, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said.

The Coast Guard said in a statement issued on Thursday that it had deployed assets and resources from across the country to create a sustainable response force.

“Currently, there are 33 Coast Guard helicopters and nine Coast Guard Flood Punt Teams, with 12 shallow-draft vessels capable of operating in flooded urban areas, which helped in rescuing the 4,500 who were in peril.

“On Wednesday alone, Punt Teams took more than 940 people in the Houston, Texas area to safety,’’ it said.

SERVPRO a cleanup and restoration works franchiser in based in the U.S. and Canada had mobilised some 9,000 personnel from across the U.S. to respond to the aftermath of the tropical cyclone Harvey.

Bryan Stone, the company’s Director for Northwest Texas, East Texas, South Texas and Louisiana said that SERVPRO would mobilise or employ approximately 8,000 to 9,000 personnel throughout this event.

“Often, we are even able to utilise local residents who are unable to work due to the closing of their employer’s business,” Stone said.

“Over 250 SERVPRO franchises were currently responding to the emergencies in the area with an expectation of approximately 400 or more joining the effort in the days to come.

“Each franchise will bring their personnel, equipment and other necessary resources to handle their work loads.

“In addition, SERVPRO Industries is providing dozens of 18-wheelers of drying equipment, generators and other critical supplies to help with the cleanup,” Stone said.

He said that the company had to deal with all types of jobs when it came to an event like that of the Hurricane Harvey.

Stone said that many roadways in the affected areas were still flooded and areas were inaccessible.

Hurricane Harvey descended on Texas on Saturday and was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm by the U.S. National Hurricane Centre that same day.

The storm affected mainly south-eastern Texas, including the city of Houston, in addition to south-western Louisiana. Harvey is the largest storm to have hit the U.S. since the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Trump renews threat to scrap NAFTA

United States President, Donald Trump, renewed his threat to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and ripped on trading partners Canada and Mexico in a tweet early on Sunday, days before the three countries were scheduled to hold a second round of negotiations on rewriting the 23-year-old agreement.

“We are in the NAFTA (worst trade deal ever made) renegotiation process with Mexico and Canada. Both being very difficult, may have to terminate?” he wrote.

Trump promised during his campaign to overhaul or eliminate the NAFTA, which he cast as killing jobs and exacerbating the U.S deficit, and to adopt a more protectionist stance for trade generally, Reuters reported.

The first five-day round of talks between the three countries concluded last Sunday, with all sides committing to follow an accelerated process in revamping the agreement.

The agreement was originally signed by former President Bill Clinton.

Going into the five-day round of negotiations starting September 1 in Mexico, Trump has kept the heat.

Both Mexico and Canada have dismissed his musing in a Tuesday speech that “we’ll end up probably terminating NAFTA at some point” as a negotiating tactic.

Trump pledges rapid response as Hurricane Harvey ravages Texas

U.S. President Donald Trump has assured of rapid response to Hurricane Harvey currently ravaging Texas.

Trump, in a series of tweets, noted that the devastating storm had been upgraded to a ‘Category 4’ storm by the National Hurricane Center.

“I have spoken w/ @GovAbbott of Texas and @LouisianaGov Edwards. Closely monitoring #HurricaneHarvey developments and here to assist as needed.”

“I encourage everyone in the path of #HurricaneHarvey to heed the advice and orders of their local and state officials.”

“Just arrived at Camp David, where I am monitoring the path and doings of Hurricane Harvey (as it strengthens to a Class 3). 125 MPH winds!”

“Storm turned Hurricane is getting much bigger and more powerful than projected. Federal Government is on site and ready to respond. Be safe!

“We will continue to monitor #HurricaneHarvey and the preparedness and response efforts of state, local and federal officials. I encourage people in the path of this dangerous storm to heed the advice and orders of their local and state officials,” Trump tweeted.

The National Hurricane Centre, in an advisory on Friday, warned Texans to prepare for “life-threatening flash flooding” especially around the Texas Gulf Coast.

“The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Hurricane Harvey to a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph and is moving northwest at a speed of 8 miles an hour.

“The storm is about 45 miles outside of Corpus Christi,” the Centre said in an advisory.

The storm was expected to make landfall near Corpus Christi late Friday or early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi issued a warning for southwestern Calhoun County in south Texas, urging residents to “TAKE COVER NOW!”

“Widespread destructive winds of 115 to 145 mph will spread across Calhoun County, Aransas County, Nueces County, San Patricio County, Refugio County, producing swaths of tornado-like damage.

“TAKE COVER NOW! Treat these imminent extreme winds as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to the safe room in your shelter. Take action now to protect your life!” the service said in an advisory.

The service had also issued a warning on Friday saying that parts of Texas “may be uninhabitable” for weeks or months after Hurricane Harvey unleashes what could be the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. since 2005.

  • U.S slaps new sanctions on Venezuela

U.S slaps new sanctions on Venezuela

United States President, Donald Trump, signed an executive order on Friday imposing new financial sanctions on Venezuela over President Nicolas Maduro’s undemocratic actions.

The move prohibits dealings in new debt and equity issued by the Venezuelan government and the state-owned oil company.

“These measures are carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate rule,” the White House said.

It added that it would also “protect the U.S financial system from complicity in Venezuela’s corruption.’’

The move came as Maduro has clamped down on political opposition and consolidated power in his government’s hands.

Venezuela’s economy has been in a free fall and its citizens have suffered from food shortages and a sharp rise in violent crime.

Trump had on August 11 issued a surprise threat to Maduro, warning that the U.S might intervene in the chaos enveloping the South American country.

“I’m not going to rule out a military option,” Trump said.

“We have troops all over the world. Venezuela is not very far away.’’

India key partner for U.S. in modernising Afghanistan – Tillerson

India will be a key partner for the U.S. that can help modernise Afghanistan both politically and economically, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.

Tillerson made this known in a statement after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

“India will be an important partner in the effort to ensure peace and stability in the region, and we welcome its role in supporting Afghanistan’s political and economic modernization,” Tillerson said.

Earlier President Donald Trump unveiled the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan which included expanded authorities to target terrorists.

However, Trump said that the United States would not reveal troop numbers or plans going forward.

Reacting, New Delhi welcomed the announcement of a new strategy of U.S. President Donald Trump for Afghanistan, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

“We welcome President Trump’s determination to enhance efforts to overcome the challenges facing Afghanistan and confronting issues of safe havens and other forms of cross-border support enjoyed by terrorists.

“India shares these concerns and objectives,” the statement said.

The Indian ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to support the Afghan government’s efforts aimed at ensuring peace and security in the country.

“We are committed to supporting the Government and the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to bring peace, security, stability and prosperity in their country.

“We have been steadfast in extending reconstruction and development assistance to Afghanistan in keeping with our traditional friendship with its people.

“We will continue these efforts, including in partnership with other countries,” the ministry stressed.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from unstable political, social and security situation due to the activity of the Taliban and the Islamic State terrorist groups.

The Afghan National Defence and Security Forces supported by the U.S.-led coalition are currently conducting joint offensive operations to combat terrorism across the country.

Trump to allow 4,000 additional troops to Afghanistan

President Donald Trump’s strategy for Afghanistan is expected to allow sending around 4,000 additional U.S. troops to the country, local media reported, citing officials.

On Sunday, the White House released a statement saying that Trump will address the U.S. troops and American people on Monday “to provide an update on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia.”

Following the White House’s statement, officials expect Trump to announce the strategy that would meet the requests of commanders in the field and authorize the deployment of around 4,000 more US troops in Afghanistan, the CBS broadcaster reported.

On July 14, U.S. Defence Secretary James Mattis said the Pentagon was close to completing its policy review for a new strategy in Afghanistan.

On Aug. 3, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said the United States could turn the tide of the war in Afghanistan with just 3,000-4,000 additional troops and boosted air capacity.

On Aug. 19, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump was considering his options in Afghanistan after an extensive meeting with his national security team.

The U.S. and its allies launched a military operation in Afghanistan in 2001, just after the 9/11 terror attacks.

The mission in Afghanistan ended in 2014.

On Jan. 1, 2015, NATO announced its new mission in the country, called Resolute Support, to train and assist the Afghan security forces.

  • Finnish President Niinisto to meet Trump in White House

Finnish President Niinisto to meet Trump in White House

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto will meet with the U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Aug. 29, the Finnish Presidential Office said on Thursday.

The meeting will be the first encounter between the two leaders.

The last bilateral presidential meeting between the two countries was held 15 years ago when the then-Finnish president Tarja Halonen visited the White House.

Matti Vanhanen, Chairman, Foreign Affairs Committee in the Finnish Parliament, described the upcoming visit as “a very good event.”

Vanhanen told newsmen he was of the opinion that the meeting would be connected with the Finnish chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

“Finland has openly promoted the idea of arranging a summit of the Council members.

“The visit will give an opportunity to further the goals of the Finnish chairmanship,” Vanhanen said.

Mika Aaltola, an expert at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA), told newsmen on Thursday that the fact that  bilateral meeting was arranged signals that relations between the two countries are good.

Aaltola said Niinisto’s visit to Washington would consolidate Finland’s relationship with the U.S.

Top level visits to Finland by American politicians are rare.

American leaders had frequently visited Estonia, Finland’s southern neighbour.

Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Finland during the Obama administration.

The U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was in Estonia earlier this month.

In another development, Turkish Presidential Spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin said on Thursday that the U.S. Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis would visit the country soon over the current dilemma on Kurdish issues.

Ties between the two NATO allies had been strained amid Washington’s support for Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).

Turkey claimed the YPG group is an offshoot of PKK military group, which had been waging war in southeast Turkey for more than 30 years.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that apart from Mattis’ visit, the Russian Chief of Armed Forces Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov would visit Turkey to discuss the situation in Syria’s Idlib.

  • No one should worship in fear globally – US

No one should worship in fear globally – US

The United States Secretary of State, Mr Rex Tillerson, has said that no person should live in fear, worship in secret or face discrimination because of his or her religious belief globally.

Tillerson, who made the assertion while releasing the 2016 International Religious Freedom Report, said that President Donald Trump had said that people should worship according to their conscience.

According to him, the 2016 International Religious Freedom Report indicates that many governments around the world use discriminatory laws to deny their citizens freedom of religion or belief.

“Almost 80 per cent of the global populations live with restrictions on or hostilities to limit their freedom of religion.

“Where religious freedom is not protected, we know that instability, human rights abuses, and violent extremism have a greater opportunity to take root.

“We cannot ignore these conditions. The Trump administration is committed to addressing these conditions in part by advancing international religious freedom around the world.

“No one should have to live in fear, worship in secret, or face discrimination because of his or her beliefs,’’ he said.

The U.S. Secretary of State said that the State Department would continue to advocate on behalf of those seeking to live their lives according to their faith.

Tillerson said that the report was a requirement pursuant to the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 that upholds religious freedom as a core American value.

“We remain concerned about the state of religious freedom in Saudi Arabia. The government does not recognise the right of non-Muslims to practice their religion in public.

“It applies criminal penalties, including prison sentences, lashings, and fines, for apostasy, atheism, blasphemy, and insulting the state’s interpretation of Islam.

“Of particular concern are attacks targeting Shia Muslims, and the continued pattern of social prejudice and discrimination against them.

“We urge Saudi Arabia to embrace greater degrees of religious freedom for all of its citizens,’’ he said.
