  • Subomi Balogun donates Paediatric Centre to UI

Businessman Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun at the weekend explained why he gave the Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Centre to the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan (UI).

He said the institution was the first to arouse his interest in children.

Speaking in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, at the signing of the ‘Deed of Gift’, Balogun said: “A number of universities approached me, but I decided on UI because it first lured me into childcare and, among other things, gave me a Doctorate degree in 1989 for my contributions to the economy, healthcare and education.”

He said before he arrived at the decision, he consulted his son, Ladi, who is the President of the Tunwase Balogun Foundation.

Balogun said Ladi is more of a banker and would not have time to run the centre.

He said: “I consulted him and the family and decided to give it to the university. So, here we are signing the deed of total gift. I am giving it to them and the University College Hospital (UCH), but I do not know anything about their internal structure. It will be a college of U.I., but I have asked them to please retain the original name. They can extend the services beyond children healthcare.”

Balogun said his first encounter with the university was a long time ago, when he and a few others were invited by UCH.

He said: “They wanted us to see the condition of their equipment and the hospital and whether we could help.

“Someone took me to the children’s department and I was moved by the plight of the children. Somehow, I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to supporting children and nursing mothers. So, I adopted and reconstructed the Children’s Emergency Ward.”

Balogun said he established the paedtric centre following a suggestion by the former Minister of Health, the late Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, that there was need for Nigeria to have a hospital like the Great Almond Street Hospital in London, which would be totally dedicated to the care of children.

He said work began on the project on his 60th birthday, adding that “as at my 75th birthday, I had spent over N2 billion”.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, UI, Prof. Olusegun Akinyinka, said: “By this gesture and your antecedents, we have seen that you are a very remarkable dad. Your qualities are lacking in most Nigerians. We sincerely appreciate you, your family and the people of Ijebu-Ode for giving us this major gift.”

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the occasion was of great significance to the institution. He said it was the first time the university was benefiting from “this type of largesse”.

Adewole said: “We have had benefactions in the past, but this is a benefaction of a different kind. Simply put, it is outstanding and unparalleled.”
