    Oboabona donates kits to Sunshine stars

    Former Sunshine stars captain, Godfrey Oboabona has donated sporting kits to the Akure based team.

    The items donated by the Super Eagles defender include balls,training beebs among others.

    Receiving the items on behalf of the Ondo State Football Agency, Mike Idoko who is the Director of Technical and Management, thanked the Rizespor of Turkey defender for the kind gesture.

    Idoko, who could not hide his joy, called on other players who have passed through Sunshine Stars FC in the past to emulate Oboabona by assisting the team and current players in any capacity.

    “Oboabona has shown that he is a grateful player who cannot easily forget his past and a player that is always ready to give back to the society. It is not common to see players who have left a club and will continue to support and assist such club in any capacity. This development will serve as a big lesson to others.”

    According to the Akure Gunners media officer, Wahab Bankole, Oboabona who started his football career in Ondo town has vowed to always support the team in any capacity.

    He thanked the Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko and the good people of the state for their support and opportunity to discover his talent.

    Oboabona captained Sunshine stars to the semifinals of CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup.

    He is also one of the players expected to represent Nigeria at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

    Osaze donates N1m to Bendel Insurance

    Nigeria international and former Bendel insurance player ,Osaze Odemwengie yesterday donated N1 million to the club .

    Making the presentation on behalf of Odemwengie, Austin Uwagboe said the cash donation is part of Odemwengie’s contribution to the club that made him who he is today.

    Receiving the cash donation on behalf of players and technical officials, the sole administrator of Bendel insurance, Coach Austin Eguavoen thanked Odemwengie for his concern and care for the club.

    Eguavoen, therefore, called on well meaning indigenes and former Bendel insurance players to emulate the Stoke City striker in donating to the club.

    Two months ago,Odemwingie also donated sets of equipment to the club.

    Tinubu’s wife donates $20,000 to Nigerian students in UK

    Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has donated $20,000 (about N3.2 million) as take-off fund to assist Nigerian students in various universities in the United Kingdom (UK).

    Mrs Tinubu made the donation on Saturday in London when she received an award from the Association of Nigerian Academics UK (ANAUK).

    The lawmaker, who was recognised for her “Outstanding Contribution to Education in Nigeria,” stressed the need for the association to set up a fund to assist students with the payment of tuition and other challenges.

    She said her donation was a take-off fund.

    The senator called for more support for the association and other bodies.

    “This award being bestowed on me today will help to renew my commitment in youth empowerment and will inspire others to do more for the improvement of the society.

    “I have no doubt that members of ANAUK and other Nigerians in Diaspora are in a vantage position to realise the nature of challenges that we need to surmount to catch up with the best global practice of development,” Mrs Tinubu said.

    Mr Adedamola Aminu, President ANAUK, noted that Mrs Tinubu embarked on various youth development programmes which impacted on the lives of many.

    Aminu listed the girl-child education project, scholarship scheme and the “One Day a Governor” programme, among the senator’s legacies.

    He also recalled Mrs Tinubu’s various interventions through the Senate Committee on Education.

    Aminu urged the Federal Government to engage Nigerian experts abroad in the Education sector.

    “A lot of us benefited from home and we are committed to give back to the society,” he said.

    According to him, such engagement will further strengthen the country’s education system.

    The event was attended by members of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK and associates of the awardee.

    Firm donates educational aid to Kwara schools

    An Ilorin-based distribution firm, Padson Nigeria Limited has distributed 5,000 educational aid to 17 secondary schools in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

    The materials in pamphlets, which contain countries and their headquarters is meant to assist senior secondary school students in Geography classes.

    Chairman of the company, Chief Hezekiah Adediji, said the gesture was to give back to the society.

    Adediji, who doubles as the Chairman, Kwara State Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (KWACCIMA), urged the government to establish interactive libraries or language laboratories across the country.

    Said he: “We intend to extend the gesture to other schools in the state. Some other companies have started showing interest.

    “The pamphlets are useful for students in the senior class offering Geography. I urge public-spirited individuals, institutions and corporations to invest in educational aids and instructional materials as this will boost students’ reading culture.

    “The government should establish interactive library or language laboratory. We will not rest on our oars in making sure all the schools in the state are covered.”

    Chief Adediji enjoined all to close-rank in reviving the dwindling educational fortune in Nigeria.

    The magazine’s distributing agent, Julius Adebayo, who hailed the initiative, urged others to borrow a leaf from the firm.

  • Akume donates relief materials

    Senate Minority Leader George Akume has called for peaceful co-existence between Tiv farmers and Fulani herdsmen.

    Akume spoke at the weekend while presenting relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Asunkunya, Tarka Local Government of Benue State.

    He said: “There is no alternative to peace as crisis causes great drawback to any society. We are known to be war-like and very courageous. The time for war is over. We should seek peaceful co-existence.”

    The Senate leader urged Nigerians to assist the IDPs by donating relief materials to them.

    “I want to passionately appeal to men and women of goodwill to extend this kind of gesture to these citizens,” Akume said.

  • Entrepreneur donates greenhouse to UNILORIN

    THE Chairman, Origin Group of Companies, Lagos, Mr Samuel J. Samuel, has donated a tractor and 2,000 hectares greenhouse to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

    Greenhouse is a glass building used for growing plants that need warmth, light and protection.

    Samuel, who handed over the items to Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Vice Chancellor of the university, said it was in recognition of the institution’s “transparent commitment and dedication to agriculture”.

    He said two other universities – the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, would also receive similar donation.

    The entrepreneur disclosed that graduates of the universities employed by his company were “brilliant” in their fields.

    Samuel said his company would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the universities to promote a five-year programme in agriculture.

    According to him, a greenhouse can yield 170 tonnes of tomatoes worth N6 to N8 million yearly, with 75 per cent profit.

    “I look forward to the time when agriculture would be the centre of attraction at the University of Ilorin and the symbol of the institution.

    “It is possible for its graduates to own a greenhouse each and earn about N4 million per annum from agricultural ventures,” he said.

    He believed that it was only agriculture that could directly teach the young ones the value of hard work.

    Samuel observed that no nation had ever developed without agriculture, and pledged to train one million youths in various agricultural practice, who would be employers of labour.

    In his response, Ambali appreciated the gesture and pledged that the institution would continue to train graduates that would compete in the global market.

  • Unilever donates to less privileged

    In line with its promise to be a force in its society by helping the helpless, Unilever Nigeria Plc has organised a Christmas party for children at Dustbin Estate, Ajegunle.

    The party, held at the weekend in conjunction with Lot Charity foundation was informed by the need to give children a sense of belonging as well as show love to the less privileged in the society.

    Unilever foundation global ambassador, Mr Osita Abana, said it was donepursuant to delivering on the company’s plan to improve the world by reducing poverty.

    Abana said the need to be proactive necessitated the spelling bee competition and hand washing campaign for children in the community so as to reduce sickness.

    He said it is an inner city programme of the company and there will be an avenue for Unilever workers to visit the place often as that is how the growth of the area could be sustained.

    Abana said it is an intervention campaign of the company that is being done globally,in conjunction with their partners.

    Lot Charity Coordinator, Mrs Tolu Sangosanya, said the foundation takes care of the homeless by providing accommodation and education to them so as to be responsible members of the society.

    She said people need to be celebrated and as children, they deserved to be made happy, hence the need for the party.

    Over the years, she said,the Center takes care of vulnerable kids and have after school support programme,which helps in improving their literacy level and teaches them community development.

    Gifts was given to the foundation and the community by Unilever.

  • NAHCO donates airport equipment

    The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc, Nahco Aviance, has donated medical equipment to airports across the country. It donated a defibrillator to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, MMA2, Ikeja.

    A defibrillator is used for delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to an affected heart and this particular one is an automated external defibrillators (AEDs) which automates the diagnosis of treatable rhythms.

    The equipment could be used by lay responders or bystanders successfully with little, or in some cases, no training at all.

    Announcing the donation, the Chairman of the company, Mallam Suleiman Yahyah, represented by Mr. Ikechukwu Nwachukwu a Director of the company, said the gesture is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility to the airport community.

    He stated that it is the company’s hope that all stakeholders will come together to provide the needed support for the industry to grow .

    On his own part, the Chief Executive Officer of Bi-Courtney, Mr. Christophe Pennick, commended the management of Nahco Aviance for the gesture, promising to put the equipment to good use .

    He assured that a clinic will soon be commissioned to the delight of all the airport users.

    Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. George Uriesi, represented by the Director, Security Services of FAAN, Sir. Wendell Ogunedot lauded NAHCO aviance for the foresight and called all stakeholders to emulate the company.

    Meanwhile, arrangement is on for the donation of similar equipment to other airports across the country.

    nahco aviance last week handled the inaugural flight of Turkish Airlines to Kano .

    Also , Mr. Norbert Bielderman, has been elevated Executive Director Operations of nahco aviance. Before the elevation, he was the company’s Chief Operating Officer.

  • NGO donates school kits to orphanages

    Kazit Children Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO),has donated school kits to children of two orphanages in Abuja.

    The beneficiary orphanages are Divine Heritage Orphanage and Christ Foundation Orphanage both in Kuje.

    Speaking at the presentation of the items to the children, the founder of the NGO, Mrs Aramide Togun, said it was the foundation’s way of helping the children.

    She said that the gesture was also due to the realisation of the difficulties being faced by parents to cater for their children, not to talk of children who had no parents.

    She said that the NGO had been studying the situation in the two orphanages since 2012 and realised that school kits had become a serious challenge for them .

    ‘’We decided to do ‘Kazit Kit a Child Back to School’ this year because we know what parents pass through when their children are going back to school.

    “So you can imagine what happens at the orphanage homes.

    ‘’We are working with two orphanags and they have more than 50 children in their homes.

    “We just decide that in our own little way we are going to buy school kits for them to lift a little bit of burden on the shoulders of their proprietors,’’ she said.

    Togun said that the NGO planned to reach as many homes as possible in the near future and appealed to rich Nigerians and corporate body.

  • Oyo donates N30m to families of deceased traders

    The Oyo State government yesterday donated N30 million to the families of the traders, who were killed in Borno State by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.

    It also reopened the Bodija Market in Ibadan, the state capital.

    The market was closed last Friday following a clash between Yoruba and Hausa traders.

    Addressing the traders yesterday, Governor Abiola Ajimobi described the fight as uncalled for and urged them to see one another as members of one family.

    He said it was not out of place for the traders to disagree but they must learn to settle their differences peacefully.

    Ajimobi said: “From what I have seen here, I believe the camaraderie is still there. There are no people in this world that do not fight once in a while, but it is important to reconcile and work together.

    “We cannot prevent people from fighting, but we can minimise the likelihood of it happening through regular consultations, meetings and reconciliation. I have decided that once in a quarter, we will go round and meet with the joint committee of market leaders.”

    He said the N30 million donation was to cushion the effects of the traders’ death on their families.

    Ajimobi said: “We cannot pay for people’s lives but we can cushion the effects of their departure by helping their families.”

    He said his administration would assist the traders, who lost their property in the clash.

    Expressing dissatisfaction with the state of the market, the governor said it would be rehabilitated in conjunction with Ibadan North Local Government.

    He said: “Bodija Market is regarded as the largest market in the Southwest. It is a market that is strategically, financially, commercially and economically important and we must give it the necessary support.

    “Because we are a traders-friendly government, we have decided to fix the market and provide facilities, such as water, toilets and other conveniences. We will build the roads and give traders loans under a cooperative arrangement.”

    Representatives of the traders thanked the governor for his prompt intervention to restore peace to the market.

    They pledged to cooperate with the government and work together in peace.

    They hailed security operatives for maintaining law and order during the clash.
