“In any society, there is no way you will have 100 per cent of the people supporting you. But if you have five per cent of people saying nay, you neglect it because that percentage is negligible.”

The Bayelsa governor was honoured in the same category alongside his counterparts from Imo (Hope Uzodimma), Kano (Abba Kabir Yusuf), Jigawa (Umar Namadi), Anambra (Charles Soludo), and Delta (Sheriff Oborevwori).

Chairman of the event, Mr Atedo Peterside, lauded the Chairman/Publisher of Vanguard Media Limited, Dr Sam Amuka-Pemu, for organising the prestigious annual awards and for his resilience in keeping the newspaper afloat for 40 years despite economic challenges.

Diri lauds Bayelsa athletes over feat at NDSF

For their spectacular feat at the just-concluded maiden edition of Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF), Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has applauded the state’s athletes for their first place finish.

Bayelsa topped the medal table winning 42 gold, 29 silver and 15 bronze ahead of Delta State that had 41 gold, 26 silver, and 32 bronze medals.

The week-long festival, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with over 3,000 athletes from the nine Niger Delta states participating in 17 sports, was sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Diri, who gave the commendation yesterday at the 159th  session of the state Executive Council in Government House, Yenagoa, said the feat achieved by the state’s team demonstrated team work, perseverance and good management.

The governor stressed that the laurels won by the team had justified that his administration’s decision to construct a stadium was not misplaced, as it would be useful in grooming more talents to bring honour to  the state.

Diri said: “I welcome Team Bayelsa who were in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to participate in the maiden edition of the NDDC sports fiesta. We closely monitored it and at the end of the day, Bayelsa State emerged champions.

“Team work, individuals at their best, good management and perseverance paid off. I hope and believe that this will be the turning point for Bayelsa.

“On behalf of your government, I thank you all for your efforts in ensuring that Bayelsa was always at the top in sports development.

“You have given us the reason the new stadium must be completed. We believe that we have an abundance of talents and skills in every area of sports and we need to bring up those talents by providing facilities.

“We have not misplaced priority in our thinking to start the FIFA-rated stadium project. We believe that you will continue to do more to bring more laurels to our state.”

The governor stated that apart from sports, Bayelsa is also at the threshold of making history in infrastructure development and in other sectors.

Diri said his administration would be remembered for  the big ticket projects it embarked upon.

The governor noted that with the senatorial road projects such as the Nembe-Brass, Oporoma-Ukubie-Koluama, the expected Ekeremor-Agge and many other projects, when completed, would positively impact on socio-economic development of the state and beyond.

  • Eradiri to Diri: leave Ijaw out of your political interest, fight with Wike

Eradiri to Diri: leave Ijaw out of your political interest, fight with Wike

A former president of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, has told the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, to stop dragging the entire Ijaw nation into his fight for political survival in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Eradiri, a former governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Bayelsa, said Diri should go and grind his political axe with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, and stop making it look like the Ijaw was at war with Wike.

He said it was unfortunate that the likes of Diri were attempting to drag the entire ethnic group into political fight.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa clarified that he was neither a Wike’s man nor looking for the Minister’s endorsement, recalling that he tried to get Wike’s nod as a candidate of the LP during the last governorship election in Bayelsa, but that some persons around the Minister blocked him.

He said: “I guess it was the game at the time because a Wike’s endorsement would have perhaps made the outcome of the governorship election different as evident his support led to the victory of Douye diri because if not for the cancellation of Chief Timipre Sylva’s stronghold made possible by Wike’s support things would have been different.

“This is why I am talking about the hypocrisy in display today. When Douye Diri, ‘Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation’, went down to kneel down for Wike to collect power he used in ijawland to win Sylva and myself where was the Ijaw pride they so profess today?”

Eradiri queried the whereabouts of today’s so-called Ijaw lovers, when Wike splashed N5bn on the dilapidated Law School in Yenagoa, which was abandoned by those claiming to love Ijaw more than others.

He asked those fighting Wike to take a trip to Port Harcourt in Rivers and behold the magnificent Law School Wike built in Ikwerre land.

Eradiri asked persons, who claimed Wike insulted the Ijaw nation to replay the Minister’s statements and judge for themselves without biases if what the Minister said they was not bitter truth.

Eradiri said: “As usual, our people don’t read or listen. They simply went to the ijaw square to sentence Wike. Without even knowing what the issues were, they jumped into bandwagon of crucification.

“Lets even ask ourselves, this our ijawness, why is it not in the development and progress of our nation and people? Why always solidarity at war but not for development?

“Look at Yenagoa, the capital of ijaw nation, like a place where mad people reside replete with abandoned projects courtesy of some ijaw leaders, yet no solidarity is shown for the development , light up and progress of ijaw nation.

“Our airport is moribund and our schools are a disgrace to education. Young talents are deliberately not encouraged to stardom; jobless youths roam the streets due to visionless leadership; no hope of survival but you are very active for solidarity to fight political battles of those impoverishing them.

“There are herdsmen in our bushes killing and destroying our crops yet no solidarity to deal with such a menace but same youths can gather against a speech of fact from deputy governor but they cannot gather for their progress but easy to gather against a perceived political enemy?”

Eradiri said Wike suddenly became an enemy of Ijaw simply because he took the PDP from Douye Diri and his colleague governors.

“When did ijaw people choose PDP as ijaw party? Diri should go and deal with his issues in PDP and stop dragging ijaw people into what does not concern us”, he said.

Eradiri insisted that lack of leadership tact on the part of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, caused the crisis in his state and asked the governor to stop etnicising the impasse.

He said: “As for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, he is incompetent and that is what has brought all this negative energy. He should not involve ijaw in his political issues and affairs. Let him tell us how he has supported the ijaws or ijaw activities?

“How many ijaws of Rivers State did he empower that he is demanding Ijaw support now? How many of the IYC comrades in Eastern zone were LGA chairmen, commissioners and appointees in his government?

“Or are all the ijaw youths of Eastern Zone only good at supporting political fights but not good enough for appointment and empowerment? When Chief Wike visited Abalama, how much did Fubara mobilise his people? Wike is a fighter and i like his style.

“I advise Fubara to go and kneel before Wike and beg for forgiveness. Those, who are deceiving him have no balls. They go cap in hand kneeling and begging same Wike when they get it they come in the open to claim ijaw lions.

“Now, Fubara is the one outside they are there ranting. Mr. President used the state of emergency to save Fubara and the ijaw nation the embarrassment of impeachment. He should go thank and appreciate President Bola Tinubu.”

Eradiri recalled that when Wike singlehandedly made Fubara Rivers governor, no ijaw gathered or even went to thank him.

“Fubara did not buy form or even spoke a word during campaigns. Why should he now be disobeying and reneging on agreement? Men are those who keep their words and abide by agreements”, he said.

Eradiri criticised the way and manner the Ijaw National Congress (INC) handled the Rivers crisis and warned the body against ethnicizing political issues, insisting that the INC brought the Rivers embarrassment on the Ijaw nation.

He said: “The INC failed to realize that those supporting Wike are ijaws too, Abalama chiefs and youths lined up to welcome Wike, are you saying they are no longer ijaws? George kelly and the numerous ijaw sons empowered by Wike are they not ijaws?

“INC should not be romancing governors’ egos. The institution is bigger than them and once you belittle the INC before these incompetent governors then the institutions will be ripe for ridicule and insults. Nobody is more ijaw than any other, so INC should protect all interest and stay away from politics.

“Non of these governors have empowered ijaw nation more than Wike , the peanuts they give to our platforms cannot be mentioned anywhere as support. Cant you see how Wike developed his people and empowered them? If they want challenge they should brag with their work on ground. Wike’s work is visible for the blind to see even in our ijawland.

Eradiri said the NDDC Forensic Report revealed that those so-called lovers of ijaw nation looted the commission and stole money meant to develop same ijawland, adding that they got paid for contracts but refused to execute them.

He said they deliberately underdeveloped the only ijaw state, noting that they collapsed the educational system and resorted to sending their children abroad.

Eradiri said: “Just look at the Atala Marginal Field, the one owned by ijaw state but taken away from ijaw youths and sold to outsiders by ijaw leaders to the detriment of ijaws. We lost jobs and opportunity for economic growth of the same ijaw nation.

“See the darkness in ijaw land no power to drive growth, if not for the NDDC led by Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, who is not in their league but they continue to fight to bring him down, all our communities will have still been in darkness at night

“Please, lets stop ethnicising political issues, Diri and Fubara should go fight their political party battles and leave ijaw nation out of politics. When it favors you you laugh and dance in thanksgiving , when it doesn’t favor you it becomes ijaw affair. Wike is not the ijaw enemy, you people are the real enemies”.

Abe to Diri: stop wasting money on anti-Wike’s rally

Senator Magnus Abe has cautioned the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, against dissipating his energy and state’s resources on campaigns to stop the April 12th rally scheduled by lovers of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Abe, who posted on his verified Facebook page, said it was unimaginable that the Bayelsa government had deployed resources to stop Minister Wike from coming to Bayelsa.

He said despite the Minister saying he had no plans to visit Bayelsa and attend the event, the hoopla had continued in the state.

Abe referred Diri to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees freedom of movement to all citizens of the country including Wike.

He said Diri would not stop Wike from visiting Bayelsa any day he wants, the way the Bayelsa Governor visits Rivers whenever he chooses.

Abe said: “I have been watching all the hoopla and frenzy concerning an invitation by a group for a visit of the the FCT Minister to Bayelsa and the Wikephobia ( the fear of Nyesom Wike) that has gripped the state.

“Everyone from the Governor, to the elders, courts, community leaders, political actors are holding meetings and press conferences to stop one Nigerian Minister from coming to the state.

“Wike has said he has no plans to come to Bayelsa state but even that statement has not been enough to tone things down.

“Well, my advice to the Bayelsa State Government is simple. Safe the money for the anti-Wike press conferences, court cases and spend it on your people.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees all Nigerians, including Nyesom Wike, the freedom to move freely within our country.

“The day Wike decides to visit Yenagoa he will do so just like Governor Diri comes to Port-Harcourt and Abuja whenever he wants.

“As leaders in the South-South let us learn to use our phones. A simple phone call from Governor Diri to Minister Wike could have saved the state from all this trauma and needless expenses.

It’s time for us all review our style in the south south, we will all do so much better if we can cooperate and collaborate.”

Muslims in Bayelsa State yesterday gave thumbs up to Governor Douye Diri for his administration’s show of love during the Ramadan period.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the Muslim leader also thanked the governor for the regular pilgrimage sponsorship of Muslims throughout his first tenure.

Otobo described the administration’s welfare gestures as laudable, noting that Muslims in the state enjoy a rare privilege compared to their counterparts in other states.

His words: “On behalf of the Muslim community in Bayelsa State, we appreciate your unwavering support to us. Your leadership style is highly commendable because your administration gives equal treatment to Christians and Muslims alike without prejudice.

“In view of the governor’s magnanimity, the Muslim leaders and adherents in Bayelsa State pass a vote of confidence in your administration as we celebrate this joyous occasion.”

Responding, Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the Muslim leaders, stating that they had been supportive and contributing to the development of the state’s economy.

The governor, who wore a white Babaringa to identify with the Muslim community, urged them to promote religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence.

“As you celebrate Sallah across the country and the world, I want to identify with you. Let us not elevate our religious and ethnic differences high and above other religious groups.

“Wherever you reside is your home. Bayelsa is your home and so guard it jealously and not allow criminality in the state. We are all Nigerians. Let us continue to work hand in gloves to develop Bayelsa.

“Whenever we have security reports, you have always cooperated with us. There is no society where peace is one hundred per cent. Bayelsa still has pockets of crime but our state is ranked as one of the safest in the country.”

The governor advised the Muslim leaders to always channel their challenges to the appropriate government authorities.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Rev. Godspower Asingba, also commended the governor for extending a hand of fellowship to the Muslim community.

He added that the state government always provided food items and cash gifts at the beginning of the Ramadan to assist them break their fast.

Odoko appealed for Muslim women to be included in the government’s skills acquisition programmes and also be considered for appointments.

Diri canvasses private sector involvementin UNESCO, EU-funded project

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has declared that private schools are integral to the growth of the education system and should be included in initiatives aimed at enhancing teachers’ capacity.

Diri also called for the involvement of the private sector in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and European Union-supported Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria (EYEN) project.

He made this call on Wednesday at the formal launch and inauguration of the State Steering Committee for the second phase of the project, held at the Golden Tulip in Yenagoa.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said that private schools were integral to the education system and should not be excluded from initiatives aimed at enhancing teachers’ capacity.

According to him, a significant number of pupils and students in Bayelsa attend private schools, making it essential for education stakeholders to involve private school proprietors in critical capacity-building programmes.

He identified key challenges in the state’s education sector, including inadequate supervision, absenteeism, and the uneven distribution of teachers.

Diri also highlighted the role of community leaders in improving education by helping to monitor teachers’ attendance and performance.

“Every school is located in a community, and so community leaders should play a supportive role, especially in checking truant teachers,” he said.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to education, the governor expressed appreciation to the European Union and UNESCO for their continued support.

“We thank UNESCO and the European Union for this support; it is a major boost to our educational policies and drive,” Diri said.

“But we must find a way to incorporate the private sector. There is a common mistake in assuming that private institutions operate independently.

“They are not separate from the system; they play a crucial role in delivering education. We cannot exclude them.

“This same misconception exists in the health sector as well. Private institutions are part of the overall structure, and their involvement is necessary for comprehensive development,” he said.

Diri reaffirmed that education remained the state’s top priority, emphasising the government’s focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as a pathway to achieving educational excellence.

“In Bayelsa, education is our number one priority. An uneducated society is a disadvantaged society. Education makes people easier to lead but harder to enslave.

“Our government has embraced STEM because we believe it will propel us forward in the educational landscape. Through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, we can achieve our goals,” he added.

Commissioner for Education, Gentle Emelah, expressed gratitude to the EU and UNESCO for their support.

Emelah said that the project represented not only a substantial investment in the future of Bayelsa’s children, but also a commitment to the state’s socio-economic growth.

Magdalene Anene-Maidah, the Education and Partnerships Officer at UNESCO’s Abuja office, stated that the 48-month EYEN project “aims to improve student outcomes by increasing the number of qualified and resilient teachers through innovative approaches.”

The event’s high point was the inauguration of the state project steering committee, chaired by Emelah, with Mrs Seiyefa Sunday appointed as the state coordinator.

Bayelsa Gov vows strict enforcement of anti-grazing law

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has warned that violators of the state’s Anti-Grazing law will face the full weight of the law to safeguard the lives and property of citizens.

Speaking on Wednesday at Government House, Yenagoa, during an interactive meeting with local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and community leaders from six affected local government areas, Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, emphasised that the law was enacted to prevent violent clashes between herders and farmers.

Condemning recent attacks reportedly carried out by herdsmen in the state, Diri cited incidents where a woman from Amarata community in Yenagoa was raped on her farm, while another victim was killed in Ogbia.

The governor reaffirmed his directive to traditional rulers and local government chairmen to enforce the Anti-Grazing Law in their domains to maintain peace and security in Bayelsa communities.

He equally called on youths particularly youth presidents, community development committees (CDC) as well as women leaders to be vigilant of any security breach in their communities and report to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

Governor Diri also directed all the local government council chairmen to activate the Anti-Grazing Law by forming enforcement committees and submit the list of members of Committee within the next 3 days to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

The governor stated: “By Friday, all local government council chairmen must submit their anti-grazing committee members to the office of the SSG. We are in a semi emergency situation and we need to deal with it as an emergency.

“Going forward, paramount rulers of communities that superintend their areas as second or third class rulers must monitor and promptly report to government. If you don’t report to us and we come there to find out you will be our guest through the police. So the responsibility of keeping your domain safe is now laid on your shoulders.”

“Youth presidents should not concern themselves with only issues of development levy. I am a little bit embarrassed that the same Epie-Atissa youths who are always going round and collecting money from anybody who wants to develop their land cannot go to the forest and challenge these herdsmen. That is cowardice, timidity and primitivity.

“This meeting is to remind all that an Anti-grazing law exists in this state. And the Governor despite his lenient, simple and peace-loving disposition will not allow this Ijaw land to be invaded by any herdsmen.

“No inch of Ijawland has ever been conquered. If our fathers handed over an unconquered land to us, then we have a duty to protect that unconquered territory and also hand it over to our children unconquered.”

In his remarks, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, emphasised the need for effective collaboration between communities, clans and the state government to check the menace, stressing that open-grazing is not allowed in the state.

In their contributions, the Chairman, State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, King Bubaraye Dakolo and Paramount Ruler of Igbogene Community, Prof. Augustine Ekein, urged government to be more preventive by effectively policing the entry points of the herdsmen and their animals.

While acknowledging the role of community leaders in implementing the anti-grazing law, they submitted that not much will be achieved with mere reporting of the presence of herdsmen in the communities, if drastic measures were are taken against violators of the law.

PDP bigger than any individual, says Gov Diri

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is greater than any individual and that its internal challenges can be resolved if members commit to addressing them.

Speaking to reporters at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja after the inauguration of the party’s South-South zonal caretaker committee led by Elder Emma Ogidi, Diri emphasized that the responsibility to tackle internal disputes lies with party members, not just its leadership.

Diri, who also chairs the South-South PDP Governors Forum, stressed that for the PDP to remain competitive as Nigeria’s oldest party, it must focus on resolving internal conflicts and strengthening unity.

He said: “For me, we have to look inwards before accusing those outside our party. We have to first fix our internal issues.

“It is very easy to point accusing fingers. But the PDP has to sit back and tackle its internal challenges. That is only when we can stand to compete with others.

“I want the PDP to be competitive with other political parties. We are the oldest political party in Nigeria. So we have no reason to be accusing outsiders.”

On whether the party’s leadership had the political will to discipline those fomenting trouble, Diri averred that such would reside with the members.

“We are all members of the party. The moment we all resolve that we need to fix our party, there cannot be any one person that is bigger than the party,” he said.

Diri stressed that the newly inaugurated zonal caretaker committee had the mandate of the National Working Committee to look into every issue affecting the party in the South-South.

The Bayelsa helmsman expressed the hope that the event was a step forward for the party.

The governor added: “In our zone, which is the only area in the country you have four governors of the party, we have all resolved and are together on this. You can see the deputy governor of Delta State, who represented the governor. I have also received messages from the governors of Akwa Ibom and Rivers.

“It shows that we are together and what we need to do is to show leadership and work with the zonal committee so that our zone will again become safe and strong for the PDP.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Friday inaugurated the new legislators quarters built by the Diri administration also in the new city.

Governor Umo paid glowing tributes to his Bayelsa counterpart, saying that it took political will to execute and complete quality projects in marshy terrain such as Bayelsa.

He described Diri as a pragmatic leader that is committed to changing the developmental narrative of his state. Umo noted that what Diri was doing in Bayelsa was consistent with his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) colleagues in the South-South in particular and the party’s governors in other zones of the country.
