  • Court refuses application to stop Fayemi from dissolving council excos

An Ekiti State High Court  yesterday refused to grant an order to restrain the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, from dissolving the executives of the 16 local government councils of the state.

The council chairmen acting under the aegis of the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) had approached the court seeking an interlocutory injunction to stop Fayemi from sacking them.

Dismissing the application, Justice Abiodun Adesodun, described as unmeritorious, pre-emptive and speculative. Justice Adesodun said there is no compelling fact in the application to warrant the granting of the order.

The judge subsequently adjourned the substantive matter to October 22. The council bosses, who are People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members, filed the case through their lawyer, Mr. Obafemi Adewale, while Mr. Tajudeen Akingbolu and Mr. Adeoye Aribasoye appeared for Fayemi.

Counsel to the defendant (Fayemi) challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the application on grounds that the matter was speculative.

The suit was filed owing to the impending change of government on Tuesday, October 16. Outgoing governor, Ayo Fayose, is expected to make way for the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who will be sworn into office at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion. The council chairmen were elected in the local government election conducted in December last year on a two-year tenure.

  • Ambode, Fayemi congratulate governor-elect

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, and the governor-elect of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi have joined other well-wishers in congratulating the governor-elect of Osun State, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, for winning the keenly contested governorship election in the State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oyetola was declared governor-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the end of Thursday’s re-run election in seven wards.

Oyetola polled a total of 255,505 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, who scored 255,023 votes.

Ambode, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said it was a well-deserved victory as the people of Osun had made a choice to vote for continuity and experience, which he said Oyetola represents.

He congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for yet another victory, saying it was a confirmation that the people still have confidence in the programme and policies of the party not only in Osun but also across the country.

He also commended the people of Osun State for comporting themselves during the exercise, noting that despite the inconclusive election on September 22, voters defied the heavy downpour to come out en masse to exercise their franchise during the re-run election.

“The election has been deservedly won. The good people of Osun have chosen quality continuity over uncertainty.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the Governor-elect will bring his wealth of experience to bear and continue with the good works of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, call for unity and take Osun to greater heights,” Ambode said.

He also urged those aggrieved with the result to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters rather than resort to self-help.

In similar vein, Ekiti State Governor-Elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have congratulated Oyetola on his victory.

While Fayemi said the Southwest regional integration and development agenda will now become a reality, Ekiti APC urged Oyetola to consolidate on the gains recorded under outgoing Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Fayemi in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Olayinka Oyebode, described the keenly contested election as a reflection of the huge political awareness and maturity of the people of Osun State, adding that it was heart-warming that the better candidate emerged victorious.

He said: “Congratulations to the Governor-Elect, Gboyega Oyetola, and to our great party, APC.  The people have spoken, and clearly too. It is indeed victory for democracy and all lovers of progress.

“The regional integration and development agenda of the South West would now become a reality, with all the attendant benefits for the people of the geo-political zone.”

Dr Fayemi, who described Oyetola as a seasoned administrator and astute manager of men and resources, said he is confident the governor-elect will take the state to the next level of development, having been a part of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s development-focused administration.

Ekiti APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ade Ajayi, described the victory as an opportunity for Oyetola to build on the good works of the Aregbesola administration whom he described as “the builder of modern Osun.”

Ajayi expressed optimism that the governor-elect would further transform Osun with the people-centered manifesto of the APC, going by his antecedents and exploits as a loyal party man who stood by his principal.

While pledging collaboration and cooperation with Osun APC, Ajayi commended Aregbesola for ensuring that the party retains Osun despite the “antics of some retrogressive and reactionary elements.”

The Ekiti APC hailed the people of Osun State for their steadfastness and peaceful conduct before, during and after the election, urging opposition parties to accept the result in good faith and cooperate with the governor-elect on the task of building a prosperous state.

He said: “I am a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and I galvanized support for the party as a reputable man in Ara Ekiti. This time of Fayemi, there will be peace in Ekiti and our youths shall live long and have progress. Fayemi will succeed.

“As the new Aare of Ekiti, I pray for Fayemi that he will succeed as the Almighty lives. I advise him to be more humble and be a born again. He should right all the wrongs that have been done in Ekiti.

“He should draw closer to all Ekiti people, especially the common people who have voted overwhelmingly to bring him back. He should do all our bad roads and also revive the dead factories.”

Meanwhile, former House of Representatives member, Hon. Bimbo Daramola, has commended Fayemi for initiating moves with federal agencies and development agencies to bring succor to Ekiti.

Daramola, who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, said the action showed that the governor-elect is on top of the situation to lift Ekiti out of the woods and set it on the path of development.

The APC chieftain, who has declared interest to run for the House of Representatives seat for Oye/Ikole Federal Constituency seat, promised to team up with Fayemi to restore Ekiti’s lost glory and values.

Daramola said: “Dr Fayemi is a leader who knows what to do and how to do it. I must say that its comfort and reassuring that Dr Fayemi is cutout for the job.”

“When was the last time you hear of the outgoing governor meeting with any Minister or Development Partners?

“Daramola however admonished Ekiti people to keep faith with the incoming APC government as it would build on the enduring legacies laid between 2010 and 2014.”

  • ‘Fayemi will boost food production’

A House of Representatives aspirant in Ekiti State, Mr. Olusola Fatoba, has hailed governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for planning to improve agricultural production.

He noted that huge investment in processing units across the value chains of crop export produce will be given priority by the incoming All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in the state.

Fatoba, who is aspiring to represent Ekiti Central Federal Constituency I, expressed his willingness to work with the governor-elect to develop agriculture across the state.

Ekiti State has comparative advantage in food and cash crops, including cocoa, coffee, cassava, rubber, cashew, rice and yam.

He said Fayemi’s vision to boost agriculture requires the supports of like-minds to make the state great again.

The APC chieftain, who addressed reporters yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, was reacting to Fayemi’s visit to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, to seek the ministry’s cooperation on how to improve agricultural production and employment in the state, especially among the youths and build on an agricultural development initiative he initiated during his first time in office.

Fatoba noted that agriculture should be given more attention to enable it engage teeming unemployed youths and graduates.

According to him, this will promote food production and reduce hunger among the people.

He said: “Part of our blueprint is to strengthen the Agriculture sector because it has the potential to proffer solutions to major economic challenges bedevilling the society.

“The fact that this lofty ideas and vision of Dr Fayemi in the Agricultural sector require a collective efforts, that is why I am offering myself to join in making this vision a reality for Ekiti State to be great again.”

Fatoba said boosting the economy of the state through agriculture requires the political will of Nigerian leaders at all levels.

The aspirant promised to complement the efforts of the state government to boost agricultural, if elected as member of the House of Representatives.

  • Fayemi cautions Fayose on supplementary budget

Ekiti Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi,  on Wednesday called on Gov. Ayodele Fayose to refrain from  actions capable of plunging the state into further financial crisis through irregular and unconstitutional means.

The governor-elect,  in a statement issued by the Media Director of his campaign organisation,  Mr  Wole Olujujobi,  said the consequences of illegal appropriation of public funds would be very grave for individuals who participated in any illegal act to defraud the state.

Fayemi counselled ministry officials and Assembly members against being used for illegal appropriation of public funds.

He warned that participants in such illegal acts  would be called upon to account for their actions when the new administration takes effect on Oct. 16.

Fayemi queried the rationale for the  N10 billion   supplementary budget barely a month to the handover date.

“The media report alleging that Fayose coerced the Ministry of Budget officials to make a demand backdated to Aug. 23, 2018 for a supplementary budget of N10billion a few days to the end of his administration is fraudulent and not in the interest of the state

“The governor’s covering note also backdated to Aug. 30, 2018 for the legitimacy of such request was equally done with fraudulent intention

” It is worrisome that the alleged supplementary budget was presented to the Assembly Clerk for immediate approval without presenting it to Assembly members at the plenary to go through all parliamentary procedures in budget processing.

“The latest development today, after the plot leaked on this fraudulent conduct,  is that the budget is now before the House for a hush-hush debate for immediate approval,” he said.

Fayemi warned that all individuals, who allowed themselves to be co-opted into any appropriation fraud, should be ready to account for their actions when the new government takes effect next month.

“We have warned government officials and Ekiti people in general against participating in illegal acts by the governor and this fraudulent supplementary budget is not an exception

“The incoming administration has a responsibility and commitment to the protection of Ekiti people from abuse  by political leadership

“This is our pact with Ekiti people and we will never shirk from this responsibility to ensure accountability and good governance for our people,” he said. (NAN)

The Ekiti APC Elders’ Forum also resolved to send a memo to Fayemi to reconcile wish the aggrieved (Oni) group with a view to withdrawing the case from court and their inclusion in the forthcoming administration.

The Ekiti APC Elders’ Forum also resolved to send a memo to Fayemi to reconcile the aggrieved (Oni) group with a view to withdrawing the case from court and their inclusion in the forthcoming administration.

The communiqué reads: “The Ekiti State APC Elders’ Forum at its meeting held on Wednesday, 29th August, 2018 under its Chairman, Asiwaju George Akosile at Igbara Odo Ekiti, having reviewed the various steps taken by the Forum on the above subject matter including the following:

*Sending of a five (5)-man delegation with a letter to Asiwaju Segun Oni appealing for the withdrawal of the case from the Court

*Invitation and meeting with the representatives of Asiwaju Segun Oni at Igbara Odo, Ekiti

*Sending a memo to the Governor-elect as to reconcile the aggrieved group with a view to withdrawing the case from Court and their inclusion in the scheme of things in the forthcoming administration in Ekiti State, from our findings, the Elders’ Forum is aware that the case is still pending in the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“We hereby wish to appeal to Asiwaju Segun Oni and his group to withdraw the case from the Federal High Court, Abuja as to facilitate an out-of-court settlement in the interest of the APC Family in Ekiti State, in particular and Nigeria in general.”

The former governor is urging the court to nullify Fayemi’s candidacy on grounds that he (Fayemi) did not resign from his position as Minister of Mines and Steel Development 30 days before the APC primary.

Fayemi won the APC governorship primary held on May 12 in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by polling a total of 941 votes beating Oni, who scored 481 votes to the second place and 31 other aspirants

Oni also dragged Fayemi to court on grounds that he was indicted by Ekiti State Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by Governor Ayo Fayose and handed a 10-year ban from holding public office.

Oni, as the Claimant/Applicant filed a suit before a Federal High Court, Abuja presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba. The suit is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/663/18.

Joined as Defendants/Respondents in the case are Dr. Fayemi, APC and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court on 20th August issued an ex parte order for substituted service on the defendants.

Justice Dimgba ordered: “Upon the Motion Ex Parte dated and filed on the 9th day of August, 2018 praying for the following reliefs:

*An order of substituted service of the Originating Summons and other processes in this suit on the 1st Defendant by substituted means, to wit; by delivering the processes to the Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Ekiti State, the 2nd Defendant, at the party’s secretariat, No 156, Ajilosun Street, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, or alternatively

*Service on the 1st Defendant by delivering of the said processes to the Administrative Officer of the JKF Centre, the operational office of the 1st Defendant.

Oni’s supporters said the court case was triggered by alleged non-inclusiveness, ostracisation, marginalization and demonstration of open hatred for them by Fayemi’s supporters.

They said the legal action would defend their rights, privileges and interests within the party alleging that they are suffering so much unwarranted abuse and humiliation in the party.

  • Group faults Fayose’s claim on workers’ strike

A group, Ekiti Development Front (EDF), has faulted Governor Ayodele Fayose’s claim that the ongoing workers’ strike was instigated by the Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to distabilise his government.

It also said Fayose is deliberately creating problems for the in-coming administration with mass recruitment to set Ekiti people against Fayemi.

A statement on Monday by EDF Coordinator, Adeoye Aribasoye, said it is hypocritical to unjustly owe workers in excess of 10 months and still claimed that they needed prompting by Fayemi to demand for their pay.

The statement said that official records showed that Fayose had collected N43.7b in bailout in three years, N70.2b budget support facility and N51.4b Paris Club refunds in three years but diverted all to projects awarded to his friends’ companies for personal benefit besides regularly paying himself security votes in millions, noting that hungry workers in this circumstance needed no prompting to demand for their right.

It added that Fayemi never blocked refunds by Federal Government on projects and Paris Club to Ekiti State as Fayose claimed.

“Apart from Ekiti State, nine other states, including APC states, have similar problems collecting refunds on projects while there is no state that can claim that the Federal Government is withholding its Paris Club refunds unjustly,” Aribasoye explained.

The statement also accused Fayose of hypocrisy over claim that Fayemi has no right to express his opinions on some state matters after he was elected governor on July 14, 2018.

“Let us remind Fayose that after he was declared winner in the June 21, 2014 election fraud, he started behaving like an incumbent governor by giving a counter-order urging disobedience to Fayemi’s legal curfew to curb violence over the late Omolafe Aderiye’s murder.

“Fayose wrote to the banks to stop granting credit facility to Fayemi to pay salary while he threw all his daily needs and expenses to Fayemi after he was declared governor.

“Fayose applied to Fayemi for a paid trip to Dubai for vacation and Fayemi released funds to him and two of his aides.

“As if this was not enough, Fayose went to Coscharis Motors to collect a brand new bullet-proof Range Rover Jeep and a brand new power bike to serve as his outrider without following due process only to pass a bill close to N100 million to the Fayemi administration.

“The government obliged all these in the interest of peace and smooth take-off of the new administration, but as soon as Fayose assumed office, he embarked on hostility towards Fayemi.

“First, he recalled Fayemi’s official vehicle which by law, he was entitled to. Next he withdrew the appointments of eight permanent secretaries and other top officers who were duly appointed through a credible process and later resorted to the retirement of Permanent Secretaries perceived to be loyal to Fayemi, including sacking hundreds of workers, among whom were House of Assembly workers legally employed months before the discredited election that brought Fayose to power,” Aribasoye explained.

The statement also reiterated earlier warnings by Fayemi that all illegal appointments and promotions of cronies by Fayose would be reviewed.

“It is a surprise that Fayose who planned to sack 3,000 workers about nine months ago over inability to pay salary is today planning to employ the same figure composed mainly of his supporters in PDP after his crony lost the July 14 governorship election.

“Fayose is trying to re-enact Benue State scenario in Ekiti State when the last administration in Benue recruited thousands of cronies at the tail end of the administration, and today, Governor Sam Ortom has a wage bill of over N7b, making the state to have the third highest wage
bill in the country after Lagos and Rivers states while Benue’s monthly federal allocation is not up to N4b.

“Benue people are now up in arms against Governor Ortom and that is exactly what Fayose is trying to do to put Ekiti people and workers in particular in trouble over unpaid salaries and set Ekiti people against Fayemi.

“Fayose is trying to cripple the state’s economy that survives on salary payment and we wonder why a leader that is worth his name will want to fight a personal war against Fayemi in a battle that will make the entire Ekiti State people the ultimate victims,”

  • Group advises Fayemi on court case

a pressure group in Ekiti State, Adeola Roy Ambassadors, has advised the Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to get a good legal team to defend the suit challenging his electoral victory.

The group said there was a need for him to get good and outstanding constitutional lawyers who would not disappoint him in the matter, especially as he has a good case.

Fayemi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate polled 197,459 votes during the July 14 election to beat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof Kolapo Olusola Eleka, who scored 178,121 votes.

Dissatisfied, Eleka filed a petition at the election petition tribunal in Ado Ekiti on August 3, challenging the result.

The group’s leader Mrs Adeola Roy said in a statement that she was sure Fayemi would win the case.

Congratulating the governor-elect, she described Fayemi’s victory as well-deserved, noting that his campaigns showed that he really worked for the victory at the poll.

She said she followed the APC campaigns and could report that he performed creditably better than other contestants in the election.

Mrs Roy wondered why anyone would accuse the APC flagbearer at the election of fraud when the others did not work as hard as Fayemi.

She urged him not to worry, saying the PDP gubernatorial candidate would be defeated in court and urged other APC members and indeed lovers of fairness and justice in the state to rally around the governor-elect.

Mrs Roy said Fayemi should not allow the case to distract him from planning for the programmes that he would execute, adding that this could be one of the reasons his opponent went to court.

She added: “Since we have reclaimed our land, I am hopeful that sooner than later, our values will be restored. We wish Fayemi a peaceful tenure.’’

  • Fayemi: Ekiti situation has worsened in four years

….Urges Fayose to prioritize payment of salaries

Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has declared his readiness to tackle the multifarious problems confronting the Fountain of Knowledge.

He said the fiscal, economic and social conditions of the state have worsened in the last four years urging the cooperation of the people to lift Ekiti out of the woods.

Fayemi also advised the outgoing administration led by Governor Ayo Fayose to use 80 per cent of allocation to be received from the Federation Account to pay backlog of salary arrears owed workers before the October 16 handover.

He made the remarks on Wednesday at the inauguration of the 32-member Transition Committee to facilitate the smooth transfer of power from the outgoing government to the incoming regime.

The committee has former federal lawmaker, Senator Olu Adetunmbi as Chairman while retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Deji Ajayi is the Secretary.

Fayemi noted that the transition committee was composed of tested, trusted and experienced personalities whose expertise would be needed in key sectors as the state transits from one administration to another.

The governor-elect appealed to the outgoing administration to cooperate with the committee in the interest of the people of the state and also urged civil servants to act in the interest of the people and not in the interest of any individual.

Recognizing the enormity of the task ahead of him after inauguration in October, Fayemi said he and the deputy governor-elect, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, are not repositories of knowledge and don’t have all answers to Ekiti problems.

He clarified that the Transition Committee should not been seen as the face of the cabinet of the incoming administration and they were not chosen to represent the interest of their council areas of origin.

This, according to him, explains why the expertise, knowledge and experience of the eminent citizens of the state chosen to work in the committee will be needed to provide the direction of governance.

Fayemi stressed that the recommendations of the committee will be far-reaching and serve as template to tackle the myriads of problems confronting Ekiti expressing dismay that the state had retrogressed in the last four years.

He said: “Our situation has gotten worse since we left government; it seems as if we are starting from scratch. We must hit the ground running when we are sworn in on October 16.

“We need to ameliorate the unfortunate situation our people have been put into. We have no reason to disappoint our people.

“The debt profile is one of the areas the committee will look into, the Debt Management Office, I suspect, has given us underestimation (on the debt profile).”

Fayemi added: “There is no reason why the outgoing administration should not cooperate with the transition committee.

“I really like to appeal to the outgoing administration to prioritize salary payment to civil servants and pensioners.

“The important thing now is, whatever that is coming to the state, 80 per cent of it should go into payment of the backlog of arrears of salaries. To me, that should be a priority.

“Let me say this, neither my Deputy Governor-elect, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi and myself considered ourselves as having repository of knowledge or have answers to all Ekiti’s problems, so we are relying on your wealth of experiences.

“In your report, tell us those things we should not lay our hands on at all. Also endeavour to indicate those things we can do to have immediate impact on our people when we assume office, which is the most important thing to the incoming government.

“If you look at the configuration of this committee, we have more financial experts with deep knowledge of fiscal issues. There are four former Commissioners, because finance is the main thing in Ekiti on the premise that our situations have worsened than we left it on October 2014.

“Our people are in serious mess, poverty has risen and we have to move fast and ameliorate their sufferings.

“I want to appeal to the present government, particularly the Ekiti workers to cooperate with the committee in the spirit of patriotism. They should think more about Ekiti interest than that of any individual.

“I see no reason why Fayose’s government would not want to cooperate with you, because this was what we did in 2014 and which the whole Nigeria commended”.

Responding, committee chair Adetunmbi said the team was aware of the huge task before it and craved the cooperation of the outgoing administration.

Adetunmbi said further: “We want to assure the good citizens of Ekiti State that we are not going to act as enemies or adversaries. We are going to be friendly and that we shall do for the benefit of our State.

“We are coming as friends, not as enemies; we expect maximum cooperation from them so that the new government can start without any hiccup.”
