  • NBC closure of radio station saved Ekiti from chaos, says CNPP

    …. Says Fayose’s action ‘treasonable’

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Ekiti State Chapter, has berated Governor Ayo Fayose for alleged breach of Electoral Act during the collation of results of Saturday’s governorship poll.

The group condemned Fayose for using the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) to declare the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola as ‘winner’ of the election while the coalition was ongoing.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olu Akomolafe, the CNPP praised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for saving Ekiti from being thrown into chaos and anarchy.

Rising from a meeting on Friday where the governorship election was reviewed, the CNPP also praised President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the conduct of free, fair and credible poll.

“The NBC saved Ekiti State from being thrown into chaos and anarchy by shutting down the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State where the governor had gone on air to illegally declare the PDP candidate as winner of the poll.

“This noble act of NBC stopped the incitement of the members of the public by the governor. Only God knows what would have happened thereafter but the NBC intervention saved the day,” Akomolafe said.

The CNPP congratulated the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on his victory in the July 14 governorship election.

Describing Fayemi’s victory as well deserved, the body commended him for extending a hand of fellowship to other candidates with whom he contested the governorship seat.

The, CNPP appealed to candidates who lost to Fayemi to give peace a chance and allow peace to reign in Ekiti.

The group appealed to the Federal Government to come to the aid of the incoming government to defray the backlog of workers’ salaries and pensioners’ benefits.

It said the appeal became necessary owing to what it called “the huge debt of N117 million” incurred by the outgoing administration as recently released by the Debt Management office (DMO).

The CNPP hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for prompt deployment of personnel and electoral materials to all the 2,195 polling units.

The CNPP said INEC’s impartiality was largely responsible for the peaceful conduct of the election.

In a related development, an interest group, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) has described Fayose’s action of pronouncing his deputy winner on air while collation was going on as “treasonable.”

The CPPM Coordinator, Mr. Nelson Ekujumi, expressed dismay that “Fayose has repeatedly denigrated and brought public opprobrium upon the exalted office of the governor by his conduct and utterances.”

Ekujumi said Fayose’s outburst on the radio on the night of the Election Day was full of malicious and unsubstantiated allegations against all institutions of state with the intent to provoke election violence.

He said: “According to the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the only body charged with the responsibility for the conduct and announcement of the results of elections in Nigeria is the electoral umpire, INEC or the states independent electoral commissions.

“In tandem with his character of utter disdain and disrespect for the responsibility, decorum of office of the governor and violations of his oath of allegiance to the constitution of Nigeria, Mr. Ayodele Fayose usurped the constitutional powers of INEC by declaring the results of the 2018 Ekiti state gubernatorial election on the Ekiti state television and radio stations and has thus committed an act of treason by attempting to overthrow a legitimately elected government
at the polls by his action.

“We must however commend the National Broadcasting Commission (NBS) for acting swiftly and responsibly in shutting down the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti state (BSES) and its sister radio station which has become an instrument for disseminating malicious allegations and
incitement to violence by outgoing governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state.

“Thus, we are demanding the prosecution for treason of Fayose at the expiration of his tenure in office for attempting to unconstitutionally overthrow a legitimately elected government derived
from the polls on Saturday 14th July, 2018, through his announcement of election result on the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES).”

  • Death rumour against me disturbing, inhuman, says Bamidele

The Director General of the Kayode Fayemi campaign council, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, has urged the public to discountenance the rumour milling rounds that he had died in the London Hospital where he has been receiving medicare for the past six weeks.

Bamidele said the rumour was targeted at botching the ecstasy of victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate in the Saturday’s election, Dr Kayode Fayemi and turned Ekiti into a battle ground.

The former federal parliamentarian adverted the public to the already mounting tension in the state, being a fallout of the election that went against the PDP government and urged the evil doers to refrain from peddling information that could increase the State’s temperature more than
    what the people could contain.

Bamidele was on June 1, 2018 sustained gunshot wounds caused by mishandling of firearm by a policeman during a rally organized for Dr. Fayemi.

A statement in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday by his media aide, Ahmed Salami, branded the rumour as an evil intention of the wicked, saying he is not only hale and hearty, but had substantially recuperated due to intensive medical treatments he had received buoyed  by fervent prayers of Ekiti citizens.

The Fayemi’s campaign boss said the death rumour became worrisome owing to his concerns about the already mounting tension in the state, which he believed such misinformation could aggravate.

Bamidele said he was not really taken aback by this information taking cognizance of the lugubrious pictures of his health status some mischievous individuals had painted, which was far from the truth before leaving the shores of the country to London.

“I  spoke as a DG of the victorious campaign outfit for over 10 minutes in an audio clip I sent during the mega rally attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, governors and other party leaders in Ado Ekiti.

“I believe this evidence was sufficed to convince anybody that I am still alive. Could it mean that these mischief makers thought such audio address was fabricated?

“I expect every Ekiti man to pray for my survival rather than wishing me dead. In what way would they profit from my demise? Were they doing it for politics or to amass public sympathy?”, he queried.

Bamidele added: “Let me say in clear and unequivocal terms that I am convalescing fast and with the prayers of all Nigerians, I shall be discharged soon to reunite my political family and admirers in Ekiti to prepare grounds for Dr Fayemi assumption of office on October 16, 2018.

“I want to salute the courage of our people for voting massively for Dr. Fayemi. APC as a progressive and well-coordinated party that was averse to impetuous policy as presently being witnessed in Ekiti would come with policies and programmes that will put smiles on the faces of the populace”, he assured.

  • Ekiti: Don’t disappoint the people, IPAC tells Fayemi

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Monday congratulated Dr Kayode Fayemi on his victory in Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.

The Chairman of IPAC in the state, Mr Ilesanmi Omolayo, congratulated Fayemi while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Ado-Ekiti.

He said the victory of Fayemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over his closest rival, Prof. Olushola Eleka of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), reflected the will of the people.

Omolayo said that with Fayemi’s election, the people had put their trust in him to better their lots, urging the governor-elect to work to meet their expectations and not disappoint them.

“We congratulate Dr Fayemi on his election as the new governor of our dear state and wish him all the best.

“We believe the outcome of the election reflects the will of the people. The people actually spoke.

“However, we urge Fayemi to see his victory as a call to service to meet the expectations of Ekiti people.

“We advise him not to betray the trust reposed in him and disappoint them, but to work for the collective interest of everyone in the state”, he said.

The IPAC chairman also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what he called the credible conduct of the election.

He said IPAC was pleased with the conduct by INEC and efforts of security agents and other stakeholders to make the election a success.

Omolayo dismissed complaints in some quarters that the election result was manipulated, describing such as baseless.

“You see when some people’s expectations in elections are not realised; they tend to say all sorts of things.

“For the records, the results of the last Saturday election in Ekiti were not manipulated. I can say this, because IPAC monitored the whole process.

“in fact, I moved from one local government to another on the election day, and I can tell that the whole process was transparent.

“At the final collation centre, I, as IPAC chairman, was the one that opened all the ballot boxes and everything was sorted out and counted in the presence of everybody.

“I urge everyone to put politics aside and accept the fact that the election was okay. We should all join hands with the governor-elect to move Ekiti forward,” he said.

  • Ekiti 2018: 25 political parties adopt Fayemi

The governorship bid of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has received a boost as he has been adopted by twenty five political parties.

Citing what they called Fayemi’s “superlative and sparkling credentials” and life-changing policies and projects during his first tenure, the parties pledged to work for his victory at the Saturday poll.

The parties also praised President Muhammadu Buhari for reducing corruption in the Nigerian society, saying this will help in stabilizing the country economically within the next few years.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, KOWA Party State Chairman and spokesman of the group, Pastor Ade Ogunkolade, said the decision was arrived at “in the interest of Ekiti

Some of the parties include Action Alliance (AA), Alliance for Democracy (AD), African Democratic Congress (ADC), National Conscience Party (NCP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), National Action Congress (NAC), among others.

Ogunkolade said Fayemi was the first governor to introduce free education up to the secondary level in the state unlike now when kindergartens were being mandated to pay taxes even in private schools.

He said apart from declaring free education for pupils, that Fayemi also created avenues for employments of youths, such as the State Peace Corps, Volunteer Corps, Social Security scheme, among other policies that affected the lives of the masses positively.

He said: “After careful studies of all these achievements, the CNPP decided to give him all the necessary supports and strongly advise Ekiti people to come out on Saturday ad vote massively for Dr Fayemi to return Ekiti to the golden age of abundance.

“Ekiti people must not be deceived into another era of anarchy, tyranny oppression, indebtedness and deception”.

The CNPP condemned Governor Fayose for allegedly incurring a staggering sum of N117 billion as debt as revealed by the Debt Management Office (DMO) without nothing to show for it as achievements.

“We appeal to the federal government to deploy more policemen to the State to prevent any rigging by the PDP-led government in the state.”

CNPP appealed to Ekiti electorate to cooperate with security agencies to make the coming election a success.

  • Ekiti 2018: They’ve to get it right. Plus endangered broadcasters: after the Channels TV presenters, who next?

ON July 14th, 2018 Ekiti will decide. Justice Oathman Musa this past week dismissed a suit against Dr. Kayode Fayemi the All Progress Congress APC governorship candidate. The judge declared Dr. Fayemi constitutionally qualified to contest any election, and hold any public office. He ruled that citizens can only be indicted by courts of law, and only after fair trial.

Several litigants (including one person who is also an APC chieftain and whose suit is pending) had gone to court to seek Dr. Fayemi’s disqualification. This they premised on a ban and indictment by a government white paper issued by the Fayose administration.

For now, from all indications, most of the legal hurdles have been cleared – but fear over the polls still exists.

Governor Ayo Fayose recently raised alarm over the neutrality or otherwise of the electoral umpire, INEC. The Ekiti Governor who is of the People’s Democratic Party PDP had alleged that some INEC officials had been contacted by some APC members to tamper with the Smart Card Readers ahead of the elections to favour the immediate past Governor and APC governorship candidate.

The electoral commission has come out with a full denial and with explanations on the practical impossibility of such an act.

Six days age Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC National Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu gave detailed explanations showing that it is not possible for the commission officials or even any individual or group pre-load a Smart Card Reader. He also said it is impossible for anyone to provide ballet papers for stuffing ballot boxes.

Essentially, INEC is saying that card readers can only function on an election day. In addition, a new INEC form has been introduced to the voting system to show election results AT THE POLLING UNITS, apart from the Result Sheets that are issued to party agents at polling units after every election.

The new FORM EC60E is pasted at EVERY polling unit after collation. The electoral commission says no staff of INEC can rig an election because of the stringent processes and the safeguards that have been introduced by the commission.

This should put Ekiti Governor Fayose at ease, and also ease the mind of the Deputy Governor Prof. Kolapo Olusola who is the PDP governorship candidate, as well as all other Ekiti governorship aspirants.

With INEC ready and with just six short days to go, by this time next week the winner would most likely be known………….. Still, there is just this uneasiness, this unsettling feeling, this slight dread. It all boils down to security.

Is the safety of the voters guaranteed?

The sceptre of election violence and fracas as happened in the past, still comes to mind at election times. Who would want to go out and get himself or herself attacked and wounded just for going to carry out his civic duty? One would rather gladly forfeit that right in order to secure one’s safety, even one’s life.

Violence recorded at elections is troubling.

The Ekiti State police command has duly assured the safety of Ekiti citizens as they go to the polls.

I am not from Ekiti State, but THAT SATURDAY EKITI ELECTION IS GOING TO BE THE POINTER FOR THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

Altogether, I would want all concerned to Get It Right ,This Time.

That statement from the INEC Chief Press Secretary ends this way:

“We also wish to assure ALL NIGERIANS that INEC is committed to a free, fair and credible governorship election in Ekiti State on July 14 AND indeed THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS (capitals, mine).Sounds Great.

After the Channels TV Presenters, who next?

The long drawn-out trial of the former PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh took yet another unexpected twist this past week, with the long arm of the law reaching way, way out. Metuh who is always in very good health otherwise, mysteriously falls grievously ill each time his money laundering case comes up for mention. Olisa Metuh then oscillates between his pick of shock entrances – crutches, wheelchair, stretchers; the works. Thus, his trial is made even more sensational by all the drama.

But that is not where I am going here.

This time in this sensational case, an ‘exhibit’ – the recording of a television breakfast show was presented in court and upon viewing it the trial judge, to put it mildly, lost his temper. He asked that more copies of the “offensive” recording be made available (10 more copies); worse, he asked that the presenters be brought to court for questioning!

As a matter of fact I was not a little worried when I heard this till I saw Chamberlain Usoh on the news, about mid-morning on Wednesday.

The position of the judge is that the questions and comments made during the program where wrong, as the case in question is still in court, and so is ‘sub-judice’. This to me, is incredible.

Now, a television broadcast on a broadcast channel, especially on a news station is ever going to be segmented, and it is the function of the broadcast station to keep to the core mandate.

It is common knowledge that this includes – to educate, to inform, and also to entertain. Or how would it possibly sound if every time you turned on your television, you heard something like this:

v             Fifty people were killed in Benue State on Monday by suspected herdsmen.

v             Sixty-five people were killed in Benue State on Tuesday by suspected herdsmen.

v             Eighty-eight people were killed yesterday in Benue ….. And on and on that way!

No! These are piece of information, they are news items given for the purpose of information.

At this point, every reasonable mind would start thinking- what could be the cause of all this, what is being done about all this; these questions would definitely come up in the thinking of any mind.

It behooves the broadcast station to provide, or at least try and provide answers to some of those bugging questions surrounding on-going topical issues.

And that is just what the Channel Television Sunrise Daily seeks to do, and was seeking to do, in finding out details of the topical Metuh Money-laundering case; more so in this season of anti-corruption.

I am a broadcaster too, and I am deeply disturbed that several years after the Freedom of Information Bill had been passed into law, presenters Chamberlain Usoh, Nneota Egbe, Gimba Umar and others including even the Director of News of Channel Television are to be prosecuted. Just for doing their job! In all good conscience, that is not just,

  • Fayemi’s monthly stipends made me self-reliant, says 85-year-old

As the Ekiti State governorship election inches closer, the electorate are keen in voting for any one who will have their well-being at heart. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports that among those who wish that Dr Kayode Fayemi wins is 85-year-old Madam Victoria Funke Akinyemi who rears goats from savings from stipends she received during Fayemi’s tenure as Ekiti State Governor.

As the Ekiti State governorship election is 10 days away from today, frantic efforts are being made to encourage the electorate to vote for ex-Governor John Kayode Fayemi. Some are also convinced that, with their votes, the man who had his Doctorate degree in War Studies from King’s College, University of London, England, and who specialised in civil-military relations, will win the election with great margin.

Among ardent believers that victory is already his on July 14, is 85-year-old woman, Madam Victoria Funke Akinyemi who has ever remained grateful to Dr Fayemi for his gesture when he was governor of Ekiti State.

The octogenarian, who rears goats from the savings that accrued from the N5, 000 stipends that she received monthly during his administration, has narrated how the monthly stipends received during the tenure of Fayemi changed her life.

Speaking with reporters in her home in Ilasa-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State, the woman said she purchased a she-goat from the stipends and now rears goats on commercial basis.

Apart from selling goats to sustain herself, the octogenarian said she also feeds on the animals, even as she gives out some of the meat to others in her neighbourhood.

Describing Fayemi as her “father,” Mrs. Akinyemi urged voters in Ekiti State to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the July 14 election to enable them to enjoy good governance and for more aged people to be taken care of.

According to her, voters should entrust Fayemi with their votes to enjoy regular payment of workers’ salaries, provision of social amenities in rural areas and other benefits enjoyed during his tenure.

She said: “Now I sell goats. It was my father (Fayemi) that gave me the money with which I bought one goat. It was money I saved from the monthly N5, 000 allowances to the aged people received when he was governor.

“In fact, the last time he came to campaign in my community, I presented a goat to him (Fayemi) in appreciation of what he did for me and other aged people during his tenure.

“I purchased a goat from savings of my own stipends and that goat gave birth to more goats  as you can see them here. I sell goats to people who need them and I also kill one from the flock any time I feel like eating goat meat.

“If not for what Fayemi did for us, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity of selling goats to make money years after he had left office.

“I pray from the depth of my heart that Fayemi will win the next election. God will answer his prayers to become governor again to enable more people to benefit from the programmes he has for the state.

“I want people in my community to vote for Fayemi; they should support him to win the next election so that he will pay workers’ salaries and pay stipends to the aged people again.

“We want him to return to Government House again to do those good things for the people. In fact, if it is possible, goats will vote for Fayemi.”

A neighbour to Mama Akinyemi, Mr. Folarin Olaiya said: “Mama was lucky to be selected among the aged people who obtained forms during Fayemi’s administration and she was collecting N5,000 monthly.”

“From the money, she was buying goats for rearing and her goats multiplied. After Fayemi left office as governor, Mama was selling her goats to sustain herself and also feed on the goats.

“We are calling on Dr. Fayemi to come and rescue Ekiti people from the suffering they are going through, including stoppage of those laudable programmes and payment of taxes by our children in their schools.

  • Tight security as APC holds rally in Ekiti

Heavy security cordon has been thrown around Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag off rally Tuesday.

Armed security operatives are standing guard on all major roads in the city.

Regular policemen lined the major highway in Ikere and Ado on the route to be taken by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Osinbajo is expected to touch down at Akure Airport and travel by road to Ado, which is about 50 minutes’ drive from the Ondo State capital.

The vice president is expected to present the party flag to the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi at the rally.

Senior party figures including the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Interim National Leader, Chief Adebisi Akande, had arrived the city on Monday.

Men of the regular and mobile police are stationed on major junctions while officers of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) were also mobilized to ensure free flow of traffic.

People entering the stadium are being frisked before being allowed in.

The two covered terraces of the stadium are draped in green, red, white and sky blue colours of the APC.

Television and radio stations expected to beam the rally live are also fully on ground with their Outside Broadcast (OB) Vans and other equipment.

  • Adeyeye: Ekiti people poorer under Fayose

…Says Fayemi will give them succour

Former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has berated Governor Ayo Fayose for alleged lack of vision and inflicting hardship and poverty on the people of Ekiti State.

Adeyeye said Ekiti people are poorer under Fayose because the governor abandoned human capital development programmes of his immediate predecessor in office who is now the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Speaking on a special interview programme on Voice 89.9 FM, Ado-Ekiti, Adeyeye urged the electorate to reject Fayose’s anointed candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Adeyeye urged the electorate in Ekiti State to vote Fayemi, whom he said has a genuine vision to make life better for the people and develop the Fountain of Knowledge.

He said a vote for Olusola is a vote for continuation of poverty, hardship, misery, hunger, lack of focus and placing Ekiti in Fayose’s grip after he might have left office.

Adeyeye, who defected to the APC on May 29, accused Fayose of playing games with the state treasury and lack of accountability.

The former minister said Fayose has failed to declare the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) despite various forms of taxes imposed on the people of the state.

Those reeling under tax burden, according to Adeyeye include owners of small, medium and large scale businesses, artisans, civil servants, tertiary institution workers and pupils in nursery, primary and secondary schools.

According to Ise-Ekiti born politician, Fayose’s alleged draconian laws have driven investors away while many businesses are folding up on daily basis.

He criticized alleged plots by the Fayose administration to poison the minds of Ekiti people against the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Adeyeye assured teachers and civil servants of job security and better welfare packing saying Fayemi has no plan to sack them as being alleged by Fayose and Olusola.

According to him, it was hypocritical for Fayose who claims to be a friend of workers and teachers to be owing them several arrears of salaries with a good number of them dying because of lack of money to take care of themselves.

He said: “Fayose is a liar and a noise maker, Fayemi will never sack any civil servants in Ekiti, teacher, local government worker, he will even employ more workers into the civil service.

“Fayose, who called himself a friend of workers, presently owes workers between six and nine months’ salary.

“Fayemi paid workers regularly and he did not owe any workers salary during his first term. Fayose is a liar, he always lied against Fayemi.”

Adeyeye disclosed that an APC government, when elected, have plans to revive the income generating business ventures allegedly abandoned by Fayose which he said would provide more jobs.

Attesting to the competence of Fayemi to turn around the fortunes of Ekiti if elected, Adeyeye said his (Fayemi’s) second tenure would usher in peace, prosperity and banishing poverty from the state.

Reacting through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said he was not surprised by Adeyeye’s outburst describing him as a spent force and a man still frustrated by his loss at the PDP primary to Olusola.

Fayose boasted that Adeyeye and Fayemi will meet their waterloo at the July 14 governorship election describing the two APC men as “birds of the same father who cannot win election anywhere.”

“The duo are birds of same feather, flocking together. They never won any credible election in their lives. So, they cannot appreciate credible election.

“Has Fayemi ever won any election in Ekiti State? No. Even the primary election of the then Action Congress that preceded the 2007 general elections was manipulated to favour him.

“By joining the APC, Adeyeye has taken a wrong step he would regret later. Adeyeye too has no history of winning election.

“In 1999, as Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate, he lost to PDP’s Gbenga Aluko. It was only Adeyeye that lost his senatorial election to a People’s Democratic Party candidate in the South West. In the primary of the Action Congress in 2006, he lost and in protest he defected to
    the PDP.

“His profile has only been boosted with political appointments rather than election.

“He was appointed the Chairman of Ekiti SUBEB under a PDP- led government. By God’s grace, I was instrumental to his appointment as a minister under President Goodluck Jonathan.

“I later appointed him the Chairman of the Governing Council of Ekiti State University. I also got him the position of the National Publicity Secretary of our party, now he is claiming to be what he is not.”

  • Report on running mate false, says Fayemi campaign

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Office has refuted a story being peddled on the social media the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer has picked Alhaja Habibat Adubiaro as his running mate.

A statement signed on Tuesday on behalf of the organisation by Mr. Wole Olujobi described the story as not only false but misleading.

It urged members of the public not to believe any report or statement that does not emanate from the appropriate party organs.

Read Also:Ekiti 2018: Fayemi should expect worse defeat in July, says Fayose

The statement reads: “The attention of the JKF Campaign Office has been drawn to a story that has gone viral on the social media that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Kayode Fayemi, has picked Hajia Habibat Adubiaro as the deputy governorship candidate of the party in the July 14 governorship election.

“This report is not only false, but misleading.

“We have since discovered that the story emanated from the same source that concocted a story last week purporting that Dr Fayemi planned to create cattle colonies across the state.

“The general public is hereby notified that APC has a formal way of conducting its affairs in strict compliance with the party’s rules and regulations.

“At the appropriate time the party would formally announce the deputy governorship candidate.

“We therefore urge members of the public to stop taking seriously any announcement that does not emanate from appropriate party organs.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi’s billboards destroyed by suspected thugs

People suspected to be political thugs have vandalized a billboard of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, in Oye-Ekiti.

The billboard located at Ayede junction in the town was destroyed during a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rally held on Tuesday.

Sources in the community alleged that the billboard was destroyed by hoodlums led by a local government chairman who stormed the place in a Toyota Hummer bus.

The action sparked tension in the town as some APC members wanted to launch a counter-attack but were prevailed upon by their leaders.

But the state APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, accused Governor Ayo Fayose of complicity saying “Fayemi’s billboard was vandalized when he (Fayose) led the PDP rally to the town.”

The APC boss said while the party has been appealing to members for calm, a repeat of such would not be tolerated again.

Awe said: “Fayose destroyed it with his thugs; we are taking action on it. I have told our members in Oye to be vigilant. In a situation where the governor exhibits that, it is uncalled for.

“It is abnormal, I have told our party members to be calm, we are taking action including judicial action against those who participated in the destruction of the billboard.

“Fayose was there at the rally at Oye town and the rally was organized by the PDP and the chief security officer of the state was there. What further evidence do you need?”

But the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, accused the APC chair and members of his party of attempting to blackmail Fayose.

Adebayo said: “We don’t habour hoodlums in our party, it is APC that harbours hoodlums and you can see it from their recent congresses.

“PDP is a party of peace, our rally in Oye that day was peaceful and the governor and our members were not responsible for the destruction of the billboard.

“APC should search its ranks for those who destroyed the billboard if ever it was destroyed because I am hearing it for the first time. Governor Fayose knows nothing about it and our members know nothing about it.”
