How I lost my arm to accident, by driver

    •Says firm abandoned him

•Offers too meagre, says Lagos govt

•We made two reasonable offers for him, says insurance firm

Over one year after he lost his left arm on an accident, 36-year-old driver Tajudeen Wahab is still living in agony.

“Life”, he said, “has become hell for me because I can no longer take care of my family of six.”

Wahab said he has sold his house and car to treat himself.

His children, he said, had thrown out of school because of his inability to offset the school bills.

Speaking when he visited The Nation headquarters in Lagos, Wahab said he was travelling to Jos via Enugu/Otukpo Federal Highway in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue state, when a truck belonging to Dangote Group rammed into his fully-loaded bus.

He said he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent a surgery before being transferred to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital.

His left arm was later amputated.

He said: “On August 7, last year, I left Port-Harcourt to Okwungaga in Plateau State. When I got to Benue State, I suddenly noticed a Dangote truck came from the rear and hit my vehicle along with three others. I was rushed to a hospital called Mkar in Gboko. That was what I saw last. My left arm was broken into pieces. A sack was used to hold the pieces together. The damage led to its amputation. Afterwards, I was transferred to Osun State where I’m based. I sold the house I built and my vehicle to treat myself. In fact my wife’s provision store was empty because she had sold all her goods. My children have also stopped schooling since last year. My first born is 17, the second is 12 while the third is 9. Feeding has been difficult except for the good will of people towards my family. I can’t do any serious work again because driving is the profession I trained for and I’m not educated.”

A police report said “the accident occurred as the Dangote truck laden with 900 bags of salt, driven by one Adamu Mohammed was descending Odoba hills. The brake suddenly failed and the driver lost control. As a result, the truck rammed into a trailer from the rear. Four other vehicles travelling in the same route were hit in a row.”

Wahab’s lawyer Bolanle Odunlami in a telephone chat with The Nation said a lawsuit of N30million has been filed against the company.

When contacted, Dangote Group referred The Nation to Cornerstone Insurance, the company handling the matter.

A mail from Cornerstone Insurance Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications Group, Cordelia Ekeocha, said that two reasonable offers have been made to Wahab’s counsel in order to resolve the matter.

The mail entitled: Our Response to Mr. Wahab Story, said Wahab’s lawyer rejected the offers.

But Odunlami told The Nation that the offer was too meagre to call compensation for a man who lost an arm.

The mail reads: “We at Cornerstone Insurance empathise with Mr. Wahab on the trauma and pain of going through a motor accident and sustaining a permanent disability in the process.

“We were notified of a claim on the 22nd of October, 2015 by our client involving their insured truck and a third party vehicle belonging to Mr. Wahab on the 7th of August, 2015.

“We received a demand for compensation along with some of the claims substantiating documents from the legal representatives of the third party on the 14th of January, 2016. However, they are yet to submit the medical payment receipts as at date.

“That notwithstanding, we have had three negotiation meetings with the legal representatives of the injured party, with the injured present at two of those meetings. The meetings were essentially to bridge the gap in their huge monetary demand. The latest of such meeting was on the 22nd of September, 2016.

“We have made two reasonably substantial offers of compensation to the legal representatives of the third party which has been rejected. The injured was not present at the last meeting and may not be aware of the latest offer that we have communicated to his counsel on this matter.

“We are a very reputable company and we pride ourselves as being one of the most efficient and fastest claims processing insurance companies in the industry.

“We will advise the legal representatives of the third party to come back to the negotiating table rather than relying on litigation which is an unnecessary adversarial process and most often protracted. We would prefer to settle this claim as soon as possible so as to afford the injured party the necessary resources to move on with his life.

“In any case, this matter is already in court and therefore sub judice and should not be published in the press.”

Odunlami, a Principal State Counsel at the Directorate for Citizen Rights department, Lagos State Ministry of Justice told The Nation that the insurance firm on September 7 offered to pay N5 million, which she described as “too meagre.”

According to her, a letter dated September 28 was sent to the firm demanding a sum of N25 million for the victim.

She said the company’s representative told her that N10 million was being propose, though still subjected to management approval.

But Odunlami told The Nation that N10 million cannot cover Wahab’s loses.

“The victim’s arm has been amputated. He cannot do anything with that hand again, not to talk of going back to his business. That amount can’t be compensated for the damage done to him,” she said.

Wahab confirmed to The Nation yesterday that amount proposed and rejected it.

He said: “I have told my lawyer that the amount is too small. I can’t take it. I’ve being somehow rendered incapacitated. I can’t go back to my driving business, my house is gone, my wife’s shop emptied and the children thrown out of school. What will that amount caters for?”

A police sergeant, identified as Doctor Ogheneovo, attached to the Effurun Roundabout park of Goddy Agofure Transport Company, has reportedly shot a commercial bus driver dead.
The Nation gathered that the killer policeman shot his victim, identified as Ese Eruotor, for allegedly stopping to pick a passenger close to the Agofure park he guards.
Ogheneovo, who was said to have been arrested and locked up at the Ebrumede Police Station, is said to have been posted to the transport company from the Ughelli Police Station.
An eyewitness, who relayed the incident to the Nation in Warri on Sunday evening, said it all happened on Friday when the policeman pursued the victim from Effurun Roundabout to DSC Roundabout before catching up with him and shooting him dead.

Driver seeks justice for abused child

A driver  has appealed to the government and human rights groups to rescue an 11-year-old boy, allegedly being brutalised by a Lagos teacher.

The man, Michael Adesokan, a resident of Oloronisola Street in Oshodi on Monday posted a picture of a badly bruised Opeyemi alleging that his guardian was responsible for his injuries.

Adesokan, who spoke with The Nation yesterday on telephone, said the teacher, who lives on the same street with him, was always maltreating the boy.

Trouble, he said, started for the child last Tuesday after he used his N100 feeding allowance to buy biscuits for his playmates to mark his birthday.

According to the angry neighbour, he saw the child on Monday looking sick, injured and malnourished.

“Last Tuesday was the boy’s birthday and he usually came to my compound to play with children like him. So, he was very happy that Tuesday and he bought biscuits with his N100 which they all shared and were happy. But the woman got to know about it and descended on the boy like thunder,” Adesokan said.

Asked how he knew about the incident, Adesokan said: “I was washing when I heard some women discussing that the teacher has beat up the boy again. Then later on Sunday, I saw him and I was not happy at all. I was very angry because he reminded me of the brutality I suffered as a child. I was a victim of abuse myself and I know how painful it is.

“I asked him his relationship with the woman and I discovered that they were not even related. What happened was that his father left his mother at their house. So, the woman, who happened to be their landlady’s daughter, came to that house where they stayed and carries him.

“He said he was in JSS1 when the teacher carried him and brought him to our street in the guise of helping his mother but instead of putting him in secondary school, he was sent back to primary school.

“As if that was not bad enough, he was later stopped him from going to school and the woman would beat him up over trivial things. He said he used to go for free vocational training at their church but the woman also stopped him.

“I fear for the life of that boy. I am afraid of what the woman will do to him since I posted his picture on social media. I fear she might hurt him more or even hide him to cover up her atrocities. The boy needs to leave that woman’s house as soon as possible.”

The Nation gathered that some human rights groups have already indicated interest in the issue and were scheduled to visit the residence on Tuesday (yesterday) afternoon.

  • Driver, four passengers injured in road crash

A driver and four passengers were reportedly injured in an accident yesterday at Ijesha bus stop on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

A speeding commercial bus driver with 18 passengers heading to Ibadan was said to have rammed into a parked truck during a heavy rainfall.

Two other buses were also involved in the accident.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

An eye witness, Mr Ailede said many were surprised seeing the bus coming from Mile 2 hit the truck.

He said: “We are still surprised how the accident occurred because the truck it hit was parked by the road side. I learnt from other traders that the driver parked it there since morning when he was unable to repair it. The bus was on a high speed and it was raining. May be he could not see the truck well. Immediately we heard the loud bang, we saw that the bus had hit the truck and we quickly rushed to see what happened. Four passengers were seriously injured.  They were immediately rushed by traders and passersby to a nearby hospital. The driver was also injured. Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials arrived at the scene 30 minutes after but people had already rescued the injured and rushed them to the hospital,”

Ailede said that the driver might be sleeping while driving because some of the passengers alleged that the driver was sleeping at the Mile 2 Park before he was called to drive the bus.

He said: “They said the driver was in a deep sleep before they called him to drive the bus, therefore, he might have not recovered from the sleep before he manned the sterling.

”I learnt the faulty truck had been on the road since morning and no official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) or Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) could come to tow the truck from the road till it led to an accident this afternoon. It is not proper at all. I know if they had come around, they would have seen the truck and taken it off the road. This accident would have been prevented.”

  • Driver, motor boy injured in road crash

Asand tipper yesterday rammed into a bridge at Asolo along Ikorodu Road, leaving the driver and his motor boy injured.

Eyewitnesses said the accident was caused due to the negligence of the driver who was said to either be making call or listening to music.

    The accident occurred around 12noon.

The tipper was returning to Majidun from where it went to off-load sand. It rammed into the bridge and tear the guiding concrete constructed to prevent vehicles from failing into the river.

A colleague of the injured driver said the driver and his motor boy have been rushed to the hospital.

Another tipper driver lamented the nature of the road, saying “the road is too narrow for big vehicles and a stranger that is plying the road for the first time will ram into culvert if not careful. Before you drive for a minute, you will have encountered a lot of disruption like slow down, U-turn and the bridges cannot accommodate two vehicles at the same time.”

Driver, motor boy die in tanker explosion

A Tanker driver and his motor boy lost their lives yesterday when their tanker collide with a truck and exploded at Cele Bus Stop on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.

The fuel content that spilled over from the tanker into the drainage caught fire and exploded.

The explosion affected some parts of the market beside the road.

Traders scamper to safety, leaving their goods behind in the raging inferno.

Goods were destroyed in the process. Some traders were seen later lamenting their losses.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of a stationary truck was trying to avoid a speeding car that nearly ran into it and hit the fuel-laden tanker few minutes past 4pm.

The fuel tanker fell after hitting a culvert.

A loud explosion was heard in the area as balls of fire envelop the atmosphere. The driver of the truck and a boy were said to have been consumed by the inferno.

The explosion led many running and seeking for safety places. Soon, massive traffic gridlock was built on both sides of the expressway.

In a bid to escape the traffic snarl, commercial buses were seen following alternative routes to beat the traffic gridlock.

The gridlock extended to Iyana Isolo and Ijesha bus stop on the other side of the expressway.

Some hoodlums took the opportunity of the incident to go on rampage and harassed some of the onlookers.

An eyewitness Prosper Barinemekole described the atmosphere as scary.

He said: “I was coming from Mile 2 when the explosion happened and I have been standing at Cele for more than two hours. What happened was that the truck carry fuel was over speeding and the driver was trying to dodge a speeding Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) beside it before hitting a culvert which makes it to fell and eventually exploded. The drivers and his partner couldn’t escape and they got burnt to death.”

Another witness, Abdul-Azeez Bello who is also a tanker driver call on government to be provide fire service unit on the highways so as to easily arrest similar occurrence.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager, Michael Akindele confirmed that two persons died as a result of the explosion, saying that various government agencies join forces to combat the fire.

Spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye said the tanker was conveying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, when it exploded.

Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe said six fire trucks were mobilised to combat the fire.

Fadipe, however, said the fire was quenched around 7:40pm. Several shops were said to have been burnt in the area.

He said: “The fire is totally put out now. Six fire trucks went to the scene of fire, three tankers and three fire fenders. An accident occurred between two articulated vehicles which resulted into the tankers falling down and a spillage into the drainage system. Fortunately, it did not flow on the road, we actively combated the fire. At the end of operation, we recovered two bodies from the truck while a car, Passat was also recovered. About four trucks were also affected by the fire. So, our prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to the market.”

Fadipe urged drivers of articulated vehicles, especially tankers to understand that what they are conveying are highly combustible and inflammable.

“Therefore, that kind of person should have known that he is not supposed to be struggling for space with other road users. Such drivers of articulated vehicles should be persons that can read and write and who would understand the signs and signals on the road. He should know when to speed and when to approach vehicles,” he said.

  • Danfo driver held for ‘armed robbery’

Danfo driver held for ‘armed robbery’

    •Our plight, by victims

A commercial bus driver has been arrested by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives for alleged robbery.

Abdullahi Olanrewaju was arrested after his gang allegedly robbed some houses on Abeje and Onibeju Streets, off Capitol road in Agege, Lagos, last Friday.

Some victims have described the night of the robbery as a nightmare.

In a statement yesterday, RRS said Olanrewaju, 30, was arrested after a gun duel with its operatives on patrol, who were alerted by a victim.

RRS quoted the victims as saying that the suspect led the eight-man gang to their house.

“That was the man who pointed gun at every one of us, threatening to shoot us if we fail to cooperate with them. They had to destroy my door with a sledge-hammer before they could enter,” he said.

Another victim, who lives on Onibeju Street, confirmed that the suspect led his colleagues to their building, saying: “It was a bad midnight for all of us. In fact, he hit one of our neighbours with a pump action gum. The man has been hospitalised”.

The victims flocked the RRS’ Headquarters in Ikeja to identify the suspect as the gang leader who threatened to waste their lives.

“When I did the calculation, the fleeing robbers had escaped with N549,500 collected from all of us with other valuables”, a victim said.

Items recovered from the suspect were one cut-to-size pump action a Jack Knife, two laptops, 14 handsets, wrist watch and N2, 600.

The operatives, who were led to the robbery scene by Inspector Anthony Inege said a victim, who escaped through the window, alerted them that armed men were operating in their building.

The officers followed him to the scene where they met the robbers attempting to enter another building on the street.

The Nation learnt that on sighting the police, the robbers and the RRS returned fire.

Olanrewaju, who hails from Ita-Amoju in Kwara State, was said to have confessed to RRS investigators that he was lured into the robbery by his gang members, who promised to buy him a commercial bus after the operation.

RRS quoted him as saying: “When I arrived in Lagos, I started driving a commercial bus plying Agege to Oshodi before I joined the robbery gang. But all of a sudden, the bus developed faults, and the owner had to sell the vehicle. Since then, things have been very difficult for me.

“I met other gang members at a beer parlour in Akerele Wahabi area in Agege. I told them I was a bus driver and they promised to buy a new bus for me. When they refused to buy the vehicle for me, they promised again that they would introduce me to one business that can make me become rich. I never knew it was armed robbery they wanted to introduce me to.”

On is arrest, he said: “At midnight when we went for robbery, I along with other seven gang members met at Markaz Road. We operated from one building to the other. Although, I didn’t follow them inside but I was placed on standby outside. My job was to keep all the looted items including money.

“We went for that operation with bullet loaded in four pump action guns. We had planned our movement for that night. We had intention to rob all the houses on the two streets but luck ran out on us as we were able to visit only five buildings before the arrival of RRS operatives. We collected a lot of money, mobile phones and jewellery to mention a few’’.

Two of his colleagues, he said opened fire in the police on sighting them approaching with their vehicle.

He said: “When we sighted the police approaching, we had no choice than to shoot them. We opened fire on them and they sponded immediately.  But when we noticed that we were about to run out of bullets, we decided to take to our heels. Unfortunately for me, while other managed to escape the police arrested me because I was unable to join the waiting vehicle.

“If I had known, I would not have followed them that night. It was my first time of going out with them. I didn’t know they were into robbery but when I discovered the kind of business they wanted to introduce me to, it was too late for me to reject, they also threatened to kill me if I exposed them.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said the suspect is helping with investigation.

The command, she said, would get the fleeing robbers.

  • FRSC to fight fake driver’s licence gangs

FRSC to fight fake driver’s licence gangs

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)  has declared war on syndicates which procure fake driver’s licences.

Unit Commander in Surulere, Lagos, Mr Olatunji Oguntoye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos: “In this locality (Surulere), Lagos, we are battling with fake driver’s licences in some quarters and this is attributed to activities of touts.

“But we are doing all we can to see that we overcome it, hence, in our public enlightenment activities, we encourage people not to patronise fake officials.

“That is what led us to transform the old licence to this one. You cannot be issued any licence now without physical capture.

“If we capture your photograph, we also input your data in our system. But if you say you are getting a driver’s licence today through a third party, can you say it would be properly done? How will the system recognise somebody by proxy?’’

He said the command often visited worship centres, motor parks, and enlist the support of rulers to enlighten the public on the consequences of  a fake driver’s licence.

“The corps will prosecute whoever is found to be producing such fake licences.

“So that has been part of the protection we are putting to ensure the authenticity of the driver’s licence,” Oguntoye added.

On the delay in the collection of driver’s licences produced by the corps, the commander said the FRSC adopted notification methods to ensure that backlog of such licences were cleared without delay.

“We have gone the extra mile to inform people through short service messages and phone calls that their licences had been produced.

“As a result, we have been able to clear a lot of the backlog, but we discovered that many people are still not ready to come for them.’’

Oguntoye, however, said drivers, whose licences were still being processed, should produce a temporary licence, which is also issued by the corps, upon request.

On use of seat belts, he said: “The seat belt does not hurt you. Safety is the surest insurance, so you don’t need to negotiate or compromise.’’

He said the unit would continue to synergise with the media, to ensure that motorists and the public adhered to road safety rules.
