D’Tigers’ Agada clinch BAL with Libyan side

Al Ahli Tripoli controlled the game in three of the four quarters and dominated the second half to seal a historic championship win.

Notably, Fakuade remains the only Nigerian to win it twice—once with Zamalek in Season 1 and again with Al Ahly in Season 3.

  • Oyedeji orders D’Tigers to rule Men’s Afrobasket knockouts in Angola

Oyedeji orders D’Tigers to rule Men’s Afrobasket knockouts in Angola

A  member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, (NBBF), Olumide Oyedeji, is confident that Nigeria’s men national basketball team, D’Tigers, have what it takes to conquer at the FIBA Afrobasket Men’s Championship, Angola 2025.

Oyedeji, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Ambassador, said in an interview with the  award-winning news channel, First ZealMediaCast Blog .

The NBA ambassador  explained that despite the tough and fierce Group B Nigeria is placed in, with back-to-back defending champions Tunisia, Cameroon and Madagascar, the 2015 champions will surely pull its way through into the last eight.

“Nigeria is in a tough group, no doubt about it, but I believe we’re going come out of the group, 100%, we have both the talent and the ability to qualify, we are not going to be pushed over, we will make our presence felt on the continent,” he said.

He added that despite Nigeria’s strong presence on the continental scene, no team should be taken for granted.

“Every team is good, every team is gonna be tough, all the teams that participated in the Olympic Qualifiers are all good enough to wreak havoc,” he stressed.

Olumide who was the captain of Nigeria’s 2015 Afrobasket winning team, added that no group or team in the championship will have it easy as there are no small teams in the competition.

“I don’t see any team that will be a easily knocked out, we have heavyweights South Sudan, Central African giants Cameroon, defending champions Tunisia, North African powerhouse Egypt, warlords Cote d’Ivoire and we also have Angola who will be playing at home, it’s not going to be an easy ride,” he explained.

He  also  had some nice words for the Head Coach of the D’Tigers, Abdulrahman, a man he strongly believes has the power and the desire to get the job done.

“I believe that coach Abdulrahman knows what to do and how he wants his team to be, he is experienced, he’s man enough, he knows where to strengthen his team, he wants to win, and he will do everything within his might to achieve that,” he emphasized adding  with the proper support from the Nigeria Basketball Federation and the Nigeria Sports Commission, (NSC), D’Tigers will be unstoppable.

Meanwhile; the 16 participating teams have been divided into 4 groups, of 4 teams each, with the top two teams in each group advancing into the knock out stages of the competition, scheduled to take place in Angola between 12 and 24 of August.

  • AGAINST ALL ODDS: How D’Tigers picked  FIBA AfroBasket Championship ticket

AGAINST ALL ODDS: How D’Tigers picked  FIBA AfroBasket Championship ticket

The D’Tigers, Nigeria’s national men basketball team,   simply exemplified the Nigerian  ‘never-say-die’ spirit by bouncing from zero to book their FIBA AfroBasket Championship ticket in Libya despite starting the final phase of the qualifiers at the bottom of the table. TUNDE LIADI  here recount how the coach Abdulrahman Mohammed-led side performed the magic ..

Against all expectations,  the  D’Tigers will, after all,  take part in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Championship slated for Angola in August  following  their dominant performance in the final leg of the qualifiers in Libya.

The team overcame a slow start in the first round to bounce back impressively in the final window to secure victories against Libya, Uganda, and Cape Verde to seal their place in the prestigious tournament. They had lost to these teams in the second phase almost the same time as now last year.

Despite already confirming their qualification before the final game, D’Tigers ended their campaign on a high note with a commanding 77-62 win over Cape Verde at the Grand Hall in Tripoli, Libya.

The team’s resurgence was remarkable, considering their struggles in the second window, where they failed to secure a single victory against the same Libya, Uganda and Cape Verde who beat them then 89-82, 72-62 and 78-62 points in that order.

However, they responded emphatically in the third and final window, going unbeaten against their opponents.

Head coach Abdulrahman Mohammed took the opportunity to hand home-based players Ifeanyi Koko and Ibe Abuchi their first minutes of the tournament, rewarding their hard work with valuable court time.

    Rough  road to qualification

D’Tigers’ journey to qualification was anything but smooth. After a disappointing showing in the first round on home soil, where they came close to missing out, they turned their fortunes around in Libya.

After starting with a victory over hosts Libya, they avenged their earlier loss to Uganda with a decisive 87-67 victory.

D’Tigers capitalised on Libya’s stunning upset over Cape Verde to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Caleb Agada was once again the standout performer for Nigeria.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympian dominated the court, leading all players in key statistical categories. He finished with a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals, cementing his role as the driving force behind Nigeria’s success. Talib Zanna contributed 13 points, while Ike Nwamu added 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists to show a strong team performance.

For Cape Verde, Ivan Almeida led with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Shane Da Rosa added 10 points. After an unbeaten run in the previous qualifying window, Cape Verde struggled in this round, losing all three of their matches.

The head coach Nigeria’s D’Tigers, Abdulrahman Mohammed showered praises on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engineer Musa Kida; the General Manager of all Nigeria’s Basketball teams, Adamu Musa; his assistant coaches and  players for ensuring that everything was  put in perspective to ensure that the team bounced back in Libya.

He also said camping some home based players in Nigeria and having some practice sessions in Libya a few days before the start of the third phase of the FIBA Afrobasket Championship qualifiers with the foreign based players also getting involved really helped their resurgence.

Yet Mohammed  reckoned  that for D’Tigers to do well in Angola , the National Sports Commission(NSC),  must get fully involved so that issues relating to funding would be a thing of the past.

“We had a few days to practice and so came up with a structure that allowed the players freedom to play thereby exhibiting their talent and were able to establish chemistry and stay connected at both ends of the court,” Mohammed told NationSport. “That aside, credit must also go to the NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida who believed in the team despite being at the bottom of the group. The General Manager, Adamu Musa also worked tirelessly to ensure the team stayed focused on the goal at hand.

“Additionally, I had the help of two great assistant coaches who fed me with all the necessary information to succeed. I must  also thank all Nigerians. We couldn’t have done anything much without their prayers.”

He added that with the FIBA Afrobasket Championship coming up in Angola in August, it is imperative for the team to have a very good preparation so that  the players cab  internalise the technical crew’s  philosophies.

Mohammed stated that with  the usual paucity of funds, it is important for the NSC to support the NBBF President, Musa Kida to make basketball great in the country .

“That(good preparation)  should definitely start with timely funding to execute all the training programme schedules ahead of the competition  and this should  start early,” he continued. “All the programme schedules for the preparations are tied around finances which must be available ahead of time.

“But I am glad the NSC have so far been supportive and the reassuring words from the body that the D’Tigers would be supported is heart soothing. I am impressed with what the NBBF is doing too,” he added.

    Kudos to the basketball family

For NBBF Head of Media, Akeem Busari, D’Tigers achieved their goal in Libya because of the collective efforts of  the Nigerian basketball family and he commended the timely support of the NSC too.

Busari hinted that the Engineer Kida-led NBBF ensured the team camped early in Abuja, adding that the board also ensured that the players and officials of D’Tigers were motivated and supported to realise the objective of picking FIBA Afrobasket Championship ticket in Libya.

He said: “It was a collective effort. From the President of the NBBF, Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, the board members, team officials and the players, and of course, the timely support of the NSC.

“The board did all it could within its powers, particularly, the early camping of the scouted and selected home based players in Abuja. The board led by Kida, made sure the players and officials were well motivated and inspired ahead of the qualifiers.”

Busari, however, disagreed that the NBBF got anything wrong during the second phase last year in Tunisia where D’Tigers lost all their three games to the same opposition they defeated last week in the final phase.

He said D’Tigers tried all what they could do then but that results that failed to come and that the team learned a great deal from the unfortunate experience hence their resolve they stage a comeback which they accomplished.

“We didn’t do anything wrong in the first window. It wasn’t just a good outing,” Busari noted.

Busari beckoned on the NSC to make the D’Tigers preparations for the FIBA Afrobasket Championship seamlessly through early release of funds to ensure that the team’s preparation is unhindered by any external factor(s).

He continued: “You know, funding has always been a problem of sports federations and not just the NBBF. However, I believe the team will be better prepared ahead of the AfroBasket championship.

“The leadership of the NSC, understands and knows what should be done to prepare the team. I also believe that with the synergy and working relationship between the NSC and the NBBF, funding and logistical support won’t be a problem.”

Pressed  on the non-inclusion  of some notable D’Tigers players who are doing well for their clubs in Europe, Asia and North America for the  qualifiers in Tripoli,  Busari was evasive insisting that there is no such problem in the basketball family.

“I don’t think there is any problem between the NBBF and any foreign based player,” he said. “Remember, change is constant and like other sports, new and younger talents would always come up. Nigeria basketball is blessed with a vast pool of young, energetic, experienced and dynamic players.

“The NBBF and the technical committee would always ensure that only the very best players, wherever they maybe, are selected at all times to represent the country.

“Going forward, the NBBF shall ensure that D’Tigers are properly motivated to make Nigeria proud once again.”

Meanwhile, Basketball promoter and founder of the Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, Igoche Mark, commended the team’s performance under the guidance of coach  Abdulrahman Mohammed.

He praised the players for their resilience and determination, particularly highlighting their remarkable fourth-quarter performance against Uganda, where they outscored their opponents 32-8.

“All I saw during the games we played against Libya and Uganda was a resilient team driving with a passion to subdue all obstacles, especially against Uganda in the fourth quarter. This typifies the Nigerian spirit,” Mark stated.

Expressing optimism for the future of basketball in Nigeria, Mark said  that  the recent establishment of the National Sports Commission led by Mallam Shehu Dikko  is an opportunity  to erase some of the challenges faced by the sport in the past.

“This feat (AfroBasket Qualification)  shouldn’t obliterate the rot and decay that basketball has suffered in Nigeria, but the good news is that with the coming on board of the National Sports Commission under well-seasoned sports administrators, the sport will soon witness that Reset,” he added.

With their place now secured, Nigeria will shift focus to the main tournament, set to take place in Angola from 12-24 August. Nigeria has not missed an edition in 30 years and will be looking to add to their 2015 championship win, which remains their only AfroBasket title. They have also finished as runners-up four times and earned three bronze medals.

Libya topped Group B with 10 points, while Nigeria and Cape Verde finished second and third, respectively, with nine points each. Uganda, finishing with eight points, also advanced as one of the best fourth-placed teams.

The 2025 AfroBasket, the tournament’s 31st edition, will see Tunisia enter as defending champions, with Angola hosting for the fourth time.

  • D’Tigers  blame late preparations for Afrobasket woes

D’Tigers  blame late preparations for Afrobasket woes

Members of Nigeria’s senior men’s national basketball team D’Tigers have urged  the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and other stakeholders to ensure they have adequate preparations for the remaining phases of the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket qualifying matches.

The country’s representatives disappointed in the first window with three losses after arriving  late to the qualifiers  after battling with lack of funds.

They lost 82-89 to  Libya, 62-72 to Uganda and 62-78 to Cape Verde to finish winless in the competition.

Analysing Nigeria’s performance in Tunisia, D’Tigers captain Mike Nuga implored authorities to take cognizance of lessons of the first window ahead of the second stanza in 2025.

“I think the lessons we can take away from the first window is just being more ready,” the Lagos born player said. “I thinks we have a good group of guys.

“We had all the pieces to get wins but maybe we could’ve been more prepared mentally.”

Nuga who finished as the competition’s fourth highest points scorer with 65, admitted  the players should also share in the blame for loss of concentration in crucial moments of their games.

“I feel like we could’ve paid more attention to smaller details especially rebounding and just gelling with each other, I think we could’ve done a lot better,” he said.

While speaking on Team Nigeria’s campaign in Tunisia, head of D’Tigers’ coaching crew Abdulrahman Mohammed underlined the fact that talent alone cannot always bail you out in the game of basketball.

“Gone were the days when Nigeria, because of the talent that we have, without preparation, we can just go and beat any other team,” Mohammed said. “And let’s not forget that it’s a team sport. We need to have something called chemistry, you need to have something called understanding, both among the players, the coaching and everybody that’s part of the team.”

He added: “As a team, for you to actually assess yourself and said we did this when we were preparing and it didn’t go down well with us. But there wasn’t any practice session, our first practice session was our first match as a group.

“So you can imagine how difficult it was. Most of the mistakes we were making, we were making them during the games. So if we had some few practice sessions, maybe we would able to make those few mistakes in practice and correct them going into the games.”

The Cape Verdeans recorded a perfect record of  three wins to stay atop the standings.

Libya with two  wins and  one loss occupy  second  spot while Uganda on  one win and  two  losses stay  third  ahead of winless Nigeria in last position.

The Nigerian squad left on Monday and arrived yesterday with the locally based personnel.

The basketball authorities now have ample opportunity to correct the wrongs that led to the shoddy performance in the first window as reverse fixtures of Afrobasket 2025 qualifying come up next year’s February.

2025 FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers: D’Tigers ready to rumble despite shoddy preparation

The Nigeria’s male senior national basketball team, the D’Tigers, would be competing for honours at the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket qualifiers starting today in Monastir, Tunisia.

There have been concerns in the basketball community, when it seemed that the team would not be participating at the 2025 Afrobasket qualifiers window-1, due to the paucity of funds that the ministry of sports is facing.

However, the Minister for Sports development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has given his consent for the Nigeria Basket Ball Federation (NBBF) leadership to do all that they can to see that the D’Tigers participate in the qualifiers, with an assurance that the necessary funds will be approved and the funds released within the next three weeks.

The funds when released will be used to pay for the team’s flight tickets, allowances and other logistics for the qualifiers.

D’Tigers are on their way to Tunisia and should arrive at the nick of time for the qualifiers and their match.

“Yes, even though this is coming late, it is heart-warming that our boys would eventually take part in the qualifiers for the 2025 Afrobasket championship,” the NBBF President Eng. Ahmadu Musa Kida remarked.  “The board of the NBBF is deeply grateful to the Honourable Minister of Sports, Senator John Owan Enoh, for coming good with his timely support and of course, saving the country from disgrace, and another FIBA ban.”

Nigeria will face Cape Verde, Libya and Uganda in the first phase of the qualifying series. D’Tigers will slug it out with Libya today before games with Uganda and Cape Verde on Saturday and Sunday in that order.

  • FIBA rankings: D’Tigers’ progress excite Kida, Ahmedu

THE hierarchy of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) is excited over the rise of the Men’s National Basketball team in the latest FIBA ranking which was released on Thursday.

D’Tigers moved up 10 places to the 23rd in the world after becoming the first country to qualify for the World Cup. The team won three games and lost two during the competition to finish 17th out of the 32 participating teams.

NBBF President, Engr Musa Kida said the latest feat was the right reward for hard work put in place by the federation and the team during the qualifiers and World Cup preparation which culminated in a good outing in China.

“We are really excited with this announcement. It shows that the world has continued to pay attention to Nigerian basketball after many years of playing second fiddle.

“Although, I believe that we deserve more than being 23rd best team in the world based on our current form, but it is a process. The federation is excited that we are on the right track and we will continue to push harder in our resolve to record more successes.”

International member on the board of the NBBF, Col Sam Ahmedu also said that the development was a very good and encouraging one which indicates the stride Nigeria is making.

“Yes, very good news and encouraging. Indication of the strides Nigeria is making. With the efforts being made, Nigeria will soon break into the top 10 in the world,” Ahmedu added.

USA still hold on to the number one spot while current world champion, Spain are ranked second ahead of Australia who climbed eight places to third spot.

The Alex Nwora tutored side who have qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are still ranked number 1  in Africa ahead of Angola, Tunisia, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire who are ranked 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
