  • Commonwealth Games: D’Tigers ready for battle – Dike

D’ Tigers shooting guard, Azouma Dike has said that the Nigerian team is set for the Commonwealth Games basketball event, which begins on Thursday in Gold Coast.

The Alex Nwora-tutored side has a tough task but Dike is sure that they will do well at the Games. “We are getting set for the game against New Zealand. It is will be a very tough game but we are not scared of any team.

We are not scared of the big names because it is a game where anything can happen, so we all have to bring our best performance into all the games.

“We can shock some teams. You can take surprise element away from basketball because small teams have prospered against big teams in competitions. We have what it takes to do well and I believe in my teammates,” Dike added.

Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kaduna that the gesture was part of the board’s philosophy of reaching out to the less-privileged.

Umar, on behalf of the NBBF said the Community Outreach Service was part of the board’s activities in the ongoing Kwese Premier Basketball League Final 8 Championship at the Indoor Hall of the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

“Today, we identify with the less-privileged to show that we care and willing to support them to aspire and become great in life.

“This is important to us because we want to contribute to their lives and encourage as well as motivate them to look up to these players and aspire to be like them.

“Life is all about give and take and we really appreciate and thank the management of the home for taking care of the children.”

Ochefu hopeful as D’Tigers leave for Tunisia

Washington Wizards centre Daniel Ochefu is hopeful and aiming for the trophy as Nigeria begins the campaign to retain the African cup they won in Tunisia two years ago.
Nigeria national basketball team, D’Tigers flew out of the country for Tunisia at 6am Wednesday, 6th September from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos aboard an Air Maroc flight.
The Tigers will start their campaign in the African championship with preliminary games against DR Congo, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire for the competition taking the tip off on Friday. The championship is being hosted jointly for the first time by Senegal and Tunisia.
The final team list was made by coach Alex Nwora on Tuesday after the team’s final work out at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. The Nigerian men have added pressure to perform creditably well after the women’s team won the African cup in Mali barely a fortnight ago. But despite the perceived pressure, Ochefu believes the Tigers can return from Tunis with their heads held high.
He said, “We’ll keep the same kind of mentality they (D’Tigers 2015 squad) had when they won the championship in 2015; that’s the way to go.”
The Nigerian team is entering the championship with a lot of players who have never played at the Nations Cup level previously. And this includes Ochefu who is making his debut but he believes that should not count.
“My profession is to play basketball; I’m in shape and ready to go.
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s my first time or not; we are going to play basketball over there and that I am very ready to do. Nigeria will be the team everyone wants work hard against for obvious reasons. The men won it the last time and the ladies just the whole of Africa again.
“Yes, I don’t know much about the system here but I know basketball very well. I can rebound, I can defend and I can score and that is what I am going there to do.”
Nigeria will play the first match on Friday against Congo.
    Final list

Ugboaja Summer Camp: 700 players fight for scholarship slots

About 700 Basketball and American Football players are fighting for places in the 20 scholarship scheme slots at the Ejike Ugboaja Basketball Foundation summer camp at the National Stadium, Abuja.

Okeke, who is set to turn pro, next year, with 18 professional clubs seeking his signature, says he will always want to come down home in the nearest future to develop sports just as his mentor Ejike, because sports men are suffering a lot.

While hoping that results in other games favour them, D’Tigers will strategise to inflict another defeat on the host who lost to South American rivals, Argentina 111-107 in double overtime. The Brazilians also need to win the game but would meet a resilient Nigerian team that is full of confidence after beating Croatia.

  • D’Tigers: Why we lost

    D’Tigers: Why we lost

D’TIGERS player, Chamberlain Oguchi, has said lack of focus in Rio have cost them the three successive defeats so far in the on-going men’s basketball event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

D’Tigers are struggling to get good results following defeats to Argentina, Lithuania and Spain.

They last won a game since their first contest at the 2012 Games in London against Tunisia.

“It’s a lack of focus. We seem to be losing maybe one quarter throughout the whole game. We go through long stretches where we don’t execute and don’t play our defensive schemes.

“If we can play close attention to detail for long stretches, I think we’ll be okay,”

Oguchi who leads D’Tiger’s also praised the Spanish side in an interview with FIBA.com for showing  so much experience in outwitting them.

“It was a hard-fought match. Hats off to Spain, they’re an experienced team and they pulled it out. We had a couple of turnovers that cost us and they capitalized on them.”
