Workers disrupt May Day rally in Abuja

Nigerian workers Monday disrupted the May Day rally at the Eagle Square in Abuja forcing the rally to end in chaos without the traditional match pass by labour unions.

More security had to be drafted into the Eagle Square arena to protect dignitaries invited for the celebration, forming a barricade to prevent the protesters from getting to the invited guest.

The 2017 May Day celebration attracted the largest crowd of workers in recent years.

Trouble started when the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Biola Bawa was called to read the address of the Minister, Senator Chris Ngige who was representing the President.

Even when the Minister stepped forward to address the workers, they refuse to allow him speak and all efforts to make them return to their seat failed, forcing the minister to return to his seat angrily.

Some of the workers insisted that if the President could not attend the rally to address them; he would have sent the Vice President instead of the Minister.

The shout of go back to your seat by the leadership of both the NLC and TUC was greater with a loud no by the workers.

Efforts by former Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to calm the few workers failed as a few of them who gathered around the podium refused to listen, nor allow the event to continue.

While many of the workers sat down in their stand watching the development, a few of the workers went round the square chanting no marching, no marching.

At this stage, the workers who had become tired began to leave the square en-mass, forcing the rally to end in chaos.

As many of the workers made to leave the arena, the protesting workers took over the podium chanting “we don win, we don win”.

  • Goodbye to Eagle Square

    Goodbye to Eagle Square

Soon, the popular Eagle Square will be converted to a rail terminal. GRACE OBIKE reports

It may abide for a while, but the popular Eagle Square in the heart of the nation’s capital will eventually give way to a rail terminal.

Like other cities in the world, Abuja boasts its own high-profile square, where presidents are inaugurated and some of the biggest events are held.  The square has hosted thousands of uniformed personnel, hundreds of horses and perhaps an uncountable number of the high and mighty.

It was at the Eagle Square that President Muhammadu Buhari was inaugurated a little under a month ago. It has served as an important landmark in the city

But in the thinking of the powers-that-be, the square should give way to a rail terminal, in keeping with the plan to transform the city into one of the most beautiful capitals in the world.

Most countries of the world  have their squares located in the centre of their cities which attract lots of tourists. Examples are the Tiananmen Square located in the centre of Beijing, Trafalgar Square which is a tourist attraction in central London and lots more. The Eagle Square may not boast such popularity or attractions as these other venues and is not always available for everyone to strut on, nor does it draw tourists; in fact, when nothing special is happening, it is little more than an open space with chairs. Still, it has earned its exalted place in event destinations.

Soon, however, the great Abuja landmark and ceremonial space will give way to a rail terminal that will serve the Secretariat and the Central area environs, according to the Director Transportation, FCT, Mr. Alex Ezumah, an engineer.

“Eagle Square was built to be dismantled,” he said. “If you look at it, the structures where done somewhere, brought in there and assembled and when we are ready, we will dismantle it and take it elsewhere.

“The dismantling of this precious square is not going to be embarked upon because authorities of the FCT do not like it or know of its value as the occasional ceremonial square, no. It will have to go because the square is presently sitting on the Lot 2 of the Abuja rail corridor and the avoidance of the square will certainly distort the Abuja master plan.”

Speaking further, he said, “Eagle Square, I am sure you know, is on a temporary location, according to the Abuja master plan, the Eagle Square is not supposed to be where it is situated right now, rather that place is part of the Abuja rail corridor and it is a terminal for the Secretariat and Central area environment; actually it is the lot 2 of the Abuja rail network that will terminate in that area.

“Although the dismantling of the square may not happen soon due to the fact the administration is yet to complete all the processes required for the lot rail network, resident will have to bear in mind that the day will come when the square will have to give way or for residents who might be wishing for an act of providence, that might spare the square or still are of the believe that the President of someone else high up the ladder will have to sign up on the dismantling before it happens.

Ezumah clarified, “FCTA and FCDA (Federal Capital Development Authority) have been charged statutorily to develop Abuja, we do not need any other approval to carry out development in Abuja but what handicaps we may have would be funding or political issues but not that we need anybody to approve or allow us do our job, whatever our money can fund or get a loan to do, to make Abuja move forward and make life better for the masses, the FCTA will do.

”The corridors for the Abuja rail network has been preserved and protected for more than 30 years, there is no doubt

there are few encroachments here and there and that can be explained, encroachment in the sense that if you are not going to use a land for 20 years, you deplore it for other things but not permanent structures and when the need to use it comes, it is removed. I can tell you, if we

have 300kms of rail network, 250kms is free of any encumbrance.

“He further explained that the rail network which is divided into six different lots will be completed at different time frames with the first segment, which will be the lots 1A and 3, to be completed by this Dec.2015 and this will hopefully ease the suffering of Abuja residents.

In explaining the Abuja rail network system, he said, “The Abuja rail network which comprises approximately 300kms is segmented into six lots that is 1,2,3,4,5 and 6, we have the ongoing lots 1 and 3 which is been done by Chinese company.

“It will start from somewhere in the Central area where we have the NNPC mega station and go through Wuye, where they are cutting the road, through the national park, through Ring road 1, get to Idu where you have the major depot and facilities, big terminal and depot and an exchange station. From Idu it will continue to Kubwa and also from Idu, another leg will go to the airport all totalling about 45.245kms that is the first phase of the Abuja rail network being handled by CCECC Nig. Limited.”Then there is the lot 2,4,5 and 6. Where lot 2 is the rail network that starts from Gudu, go through Garki 2, through the Police officers mess behind FCDA, beside Akwa Ibom house and then where you have the Bullet building and then get to the Eagle square and the continue from their through Maitama, beside the Nicon Hilton and then get to Katampe and go to Gwagwa to join the leg going to Kubwa at Gwagwa where we have a transfer station.

“Then the lot 4,5 and 6. Lot 5 is the stretch that will go from Kubwa to Bwari and terminate their and maybe with a detour to Suleja, this one is a proposal, it was not in the original network but the idea is being tinkered with, lot 4 is the southern part of the transit way, the part that will go towards Abaji, Karshi and maybe to Gudi in Niger State to join the national rail and then lot 6 is the lot that will start from the Airport wherethe first segment terminates, through Kuje to Gwagwalada and from there it will join the line coming from Minna, the national line, In a nutshell this is the entire segment of the Abuja rail network.”Lots 1 and 3, we have done the visibility study, conceptual design and final design but construction is still ongoing in lots 1A and 3 by the Chinese company, lots 1B we are thinking of making an addendum to theongoing 1 and 3, so we can say that lots 1 and 3 is ongoing and committed, then lot 2, we are trying to do under Public Private Partnership (PPP), a company Merses IRMG has signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding)  with the FCT administration to further the work done because lots 1,2 and 3 had their visibility study before now, a Canadian company Merses CPCS of Trascorm did a visibility study and conceptual design of lot 1,2 and 3, then it was from this visibility study that the Chinese took up 1 and 3 to do the final design and final feasibility and then continue with the development but lot 2 stopped at that level now you have to do the final design and final feasibility for you to develop any lot.

“The first segment we are doing has a target completion date of Dec. 2015 even though we are running a little bit behind schedule but in the last two years things has been more steady especially after Nigeria and the FCT secured the China Nexim bank loan to fund it.”

  • A celebration outside Eagle Square

    A celebration outside Eagle Square

The Eagle Square hosted a momentous event on Friday but in places far removed from the venue, residents celebrated the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari. GRACE OBIKE reports

The thrill of the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari was beyond the confines of the Eagles Square where it held. There were colourful parades and the ubiquitous security personnel at the Square, but, really, wasn’t the whole event not just about speeches and more speeches?

Abuja offered more outside the  Square.

Being that it was a public holiday, some people stayed back home, while a lot more queued up at the filling stations.

However, in Kubwa, for example, motorcycle riders, sachet water sellers and Almajiri boys staged their own celebration which started very early in the morning. Some screamed and drove at break-neck speed while holding unto the Nigerian flag and brooms and screaming Sai Baba.

Over 200 motorcycle riders took over the expressway. Some stood or lay on their fast-speeding bikes, holding their flags and chanting sai Buhari. Another group from Galadima, which mostly comprised of the Almajiri, water sellers and others, brandished flags and brooms, heading for the Square. Some danced to the tune of their traditional music blaring over the radio.

At the roundabout beside the Eagle Square, over 1000 young men and women carried Nigerian and the All Progressive Congress (APC) flags and while some danced with brooms, others drove round in cars with the occupants standing out of the windows and doors, waving their brooms. Some dabbed their entire bodies with paints that may take a while to wash out. They held their brooms, danced and swept the road.

•Residents relish the joy of Buhari’s inauguration

The chant on their lips was Sai Buhari, with a mischievous few chanting Sai Otuoke. Even after the inauguration and the President’s departure from the Square, they still gathered at their position, causing serious traffic gridlock and preventing vehicles that where mostly driving into the Hilton for the second phase of the celebration from driving pass freely especially without acknowledging them in some way.

The few individuals and tribes that were able to make it to the Unity Fountain also set up their banners, celebrating with a few cultural dance troops with different banners welcoming who most of them termed the people’s General.

Mariam Ikwunaye told Abuja Review that citizens of Nigeria should  be ready to create the change that we need and not just sit back and wait for the President to change us when the citizens themselves refuse to change

“Today is historical because money politics has come to an end, it is going to be good for citizens to seat up and create opportunities for ourselves and make the change that we want to see but our new President on his part needs to secure the nation, we need to get rid of Bok Haram that have done enough havoc and end corruption.

“I am here because I want to be part of the citizens who are going to take what we call oat of citizenry, even though Nigeria needs a good leader, we also want good followers, so Buharian culture is here today to inaugurate all citizens who will take a pledge to be good citizens.”

The man who trekked from Lagos to Abuja, Suleiman Hashimu who have come to be known all over as the trekker and joined celebrators at the unity fountain explained that although he was at the square but was unable to meet with the President one on one, who hoped to meet with him soon because he has a lot to discuss with him. “I hope to meet with the President because I have a lot to discuss with him.” He said. “I believe that it will be possible for me to meet with him because he knows about me, to be honest, I did not trek because I wanted to be popular but because it was a promise that I made with God that if President Buhari wins, then I will trek and so when he won, I decided to fulfil the promise because of the love that I have for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, now that he has been inaugurated, I believe that he will work on the insecurity because with security in the country, people will come to invest in this country which will provide employment and I believe that Gen. Buhari will do it.”

Elvis Yungurung told Abuja Review that it feels like Nigeria is just gaining independence.

He said, “It’s a great day, marvellous day for me personally and then for our country; it feels like we are just getting independence now because we have a very important change, in government, system and mindset and this is a change that we actualised collectively; it wasn’t given to us out of charity, it was something we fought for and then we got it and today it has been formerly handed to us.

“My belief is that the change has come and we are going to live the change and we are going to fix this country, we are going to fix our future, we are going to have a country that we are going to be proud of so I will just say to the President that he has to remain focused because, I know he has the vision, I know he knows what he is up to, so all I can say to him is to remain strong and focused and we Nigerians bear as much responsibility in fixing this country as much as the president does so we need to live up to our own end of the obligation, it is a collective effort the citizens have a role in fixing the country, it is not just the president.”

Ibrahim Ado, one of the boys carrying brooms and jubilating, said that he is excited because he believes that the President will provide him with a job at last, “I am here very excited because Buhari is being sworn in as President, I am just happy because it is Buhari and I have waited for this day for a very long time, now that Buhari is here, he will do us good, everyone will get a job by the grace of God, I am quite hopeful God will bring confusion to the camp of those trying to ruin Gen. Buhari’s reign I can assure you.”

State volunteer superintendent of Nigerian Youth Volunteer Service, Anambra chapter, Hon. Ruth Okeke, who is part of the group that marched to the square to support the event, told Abuja Review, that they had come to Abuja to align with the policies of the President on Youth development. Her words, “We are so excited today, we arrived since 7am and as you can see people have been celebrating since then. From what can be seen from the Transcorp Junction where over 2000 people have gathered to celebrate because we believe that he is going to really make the change. This government has to come down to the grassroots, until their is youth development and pilot schemes for the youth, their is no way that we can move forward because the last government has stampeded the country, we want real change on the group and not lip service.”

Even though most people that went into town on that day where excited, not all of the approved of the level of jubilation that was being exhibited by some of the supporters.

Taxi driver John Adewale said that most of the boys were just risking their lives for no reason.

He said, “These boys are just risking their lives for nothing, see how they are driving around, it’s very risky, Buhari has warned them not to trek for him or do all of this. Now if they die or are injured, no one will care about them, they need to celebrate with care.”

  • Eagle Square comes alive again

    Eagle Square comes alive again

AFTER nearly four years of shunning Eagle Square for great state ceremonies, whether military parades or Independence Anniversary, the Jonathan administration was compelled by circumstances to return to those grounds once again for the closing act of his presidency. It seems like poetic justice, that the grounds which birthed his presidency, but was spurned on security grounds, should fittingly also  end it. It was unthinkable in the Chief Obasanjo years that any parade, other than for visiting presidents, should be held anywhere but Eagle Square. Dr Jonathan, citing security concerns, in particular the Boko Haram insurgency, attempted to wipe off that culture.

With the inauguration of the Buhari presidency at the square yesterday, it is expected that henceforth parades and state anniversaries will be held on its evocative grounds. The culture is reclaimed, and in the years to come, history will be written from its grounds just as yesterday’s. Dr Jonathan failed to understand that by deserting Eagle Square on account of Boko Haram and other security concerns, he was giving indication of the failing strength and weakening courage of the nation. He had failed to realise that by indirectly allowing the terrorists to dictate where the federal government conducted its activities, he had thereby handed Boko Haram victory.

Every subsequent policy or action since the desertion of Eagle Square told Nigerians that when it came to security concerns, the state was unable to defend its people. Sadly, it was not only hapless Nigerians that read that signal of national weakness, Boko Haram and all other mischief makers believed that if severely tested, the country’s resolve would weaken and its will to fight wilt. Until mercenaries were hired to help Nigeria fight the terrorists, and other countries brought their armies into the fray, the war had pressed hard against Nigeria, and the country was in danger of losing an entire geopolitical zone.

President Buhari probably realises what Eagle Square connotes. He also knows what other symbols of Nigeria’s collective strength stand for in rallying the people to a great and noble cause. It is unlikely he will ignore those symbols or misread them as his predecessor had blithely done.

Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, has updated the profile of Nigeria’s to-be president, Muhammadu Buhari.

The platform which publishes the biography of personalities around the world, now refers to Buhari as the current President of Nigeria, few hours before inauguration.

It identifies him as “a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army who was Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.

The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government.

“He ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 elections.

‘Buhari won the 2015 general election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. When he took office on 29 May 2015, it marked the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent elected President peacefully transferred power to an elected leader of the opposition.

‘Buhari has stated that he takes responsibility for whatever happened under his watch during his military rule, saying that he cannot change the past. He also describes himself as a ‘converted democrat’.” Wikipedia says.

The annual Abuja International Motor Fair will hold at the Eagle Square, Abuja in October.

A statement by the Chairman, organising committee Ifeanyichukwu Agwu, said the event is targeted at boosting investments in the sector which is seriously assuming its rightful place in the Nigerian economy.

Agwu said this year’s edition has been packaged to increase the attention of the various tiers of government to the importance of developing the sector so as to enhance the nation’s socio-economic development.

He added that every effort have been deployed to ensure the sector receives the needed support from both the government and the private sector to enhance its’ rapid development.

“We are packaging a show that will showcase all the existing and potential investment opportunities that abound in the Nigerian automobile industry, which we believe are very attractive to existing and prospective investors,” he said.

According to him, hosting auto shows will go a long way in placing Nigeria in the map of World automotive business and will equally fast track the making of the nation the hub of automotive business on the continent.

Agwu said adequate security measures will be in place to secure the exhibitors; exhibits and visitors to the event.

“Towards this we have concluded arrangements with relevant security agencies to provide personnel, gadgets and arms for increased surveillance and monitoring of movements into, within and around the venue. All these are in place notwithstanding that Eagle Square as well the surrounding Central Business Area are highly secured by the government. We will not leave any room for any breach of the security or threat to the lives and property of all those who will be at the event. Extra measures will be taken to ensure a smooth and free event for all and sundry,” he said.
