Hamilton commends Eaglets over 6-1 routing of Mexico

Paul Hamilton, a former Super Falcons Head Coach, on Sunday commended the Golden Eaglets for the 6-1 humiliation of Mexico in the ongoing U-17 World Cup.

This edition of the World Cup is being hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Hamilton told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Saturday’s match witnessed a brilliant performance by the Eaglets.

“That was a great result and a very good beginning for the U-17 team in their quest to win the cup,’’ he said.

NAN reports that Nigeria marked their 50th game at the U-17 World Cup in grand style.

With the victory of the Golden Eaglets in the match opener, they are now on top of their group F, ahead of Sweden on goal difference.

The former coach said that the result was expected considering the level of preparation they had been put through.

“I believe they prepared very well and their coach is highly experienced. This is what we expect from him,’’ he said.

“They should just keep it up so that they will go far in the competition, I have no fears, I’m impressed,’’ Hamilton added. The Golden Eaglets will face group F strong contender, Sweden, on Tuesday in Dubai.

  • Home Eagles: Douglas’ call-up excites Sani

Former Apa United gaffer, Tunde Sani, is excited that Lobi Stars midfielder, Archiv Douglas, has impressed Super Eagles supremo, Stephen Keshi to earn an invitation to the national team.

Douglas and 27 others were recently named in Nigeria’s squad composed of players in the Glo Premier League for an inernational friendly against Jordan. Keshi is expected to use the match to prepare his squad for the CHAN in 2014.

“I met Douglas at Apa United and his creativity is awesome. Douglas is a typical central midfielder, who can bring something out of nothing. Any coach can bank on him to make passes that can cut through any defence. Douglas is a young player who will learn a lot in the national team,” Sani said to SuperSport.com.

Douglas was scouted by Lobi Stars during the Benue State Federation Cup finals when he helped Apa to victory.

Since his arrival at Lobi Stars, Douglas has made great impact in the heart of the midfield.

  • Emenike Celebrates: I’m Eagles’ real deal

Emenike Celebrates: I’m Eagles’ real deal

    •My goals confirm this status

Emmanuel Emenike could well be the goal machine Nigeria have long waited for as he now averages a goal every game.

Nigeria have long waited for a striker who will take the responsibility of scoring goals for the Eagles since the days of the late Rashidi Yekini.

The likes of Julius Aghahowa, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins at some point were regarded as the men to take on the Eagles goal-scoring responsibilities, but none of them could match the exploits of the legendary Yekini.

With nine goals from 18 matches for Nigeria, Emenike has emerged as the country’s new king of goals, and if he maintains this scoring rate, he could outdo the 37-goal milestone set by the great Yekini.

He is strong, cool headed in front of goal and has already proved he is a prolific scorer at his various clubs. He is only 26 and if only he stays free of injuries and keeps his current form, he will plunder many more goals for the African champions.

His confidence has been boosted by his exploits at his Africa Cup of Nations debut earlier this year in South Africa, where he emerged as top scorer with four goals to help Nigeria win a third continental diadem.

Incidentally, his Eagles debut against Sierra Leone in February 2011 had gone horribly wrong when he was forced out of the game by an injury midway through the first half. But as he has shown in his various clubs, his resolve to defy his critics have since seen him become the toast of a country of 160 million football fans.

His first Eagles goal was pure class as he lobbed the ball past a stranded Argentina goalkeeper as Nigeria thumped the two-time world champions 4-1 in a friendly in Abuja two years ago.

Emenike began his career with Delta Force in Nigeria before he moved to South Africa, where he featured for Mpumalanga Black Aces and FC Cape Town.

His stocks rose considerably when he joined a modest Turkish club Karabukspor where his goals catapulted them to the top flight. He then netted 14 goals for Karabukspor in the top flight to catch the attention of giants Fenerbahce.

In the summer of 2011, Fenerbahce signed him for £7 million, but didn’t play a single game for the Istanbul giants before he was on the move again amid a match-fixing scandal that rocked the club.

He moved to Russia, where he teamed up with Spartak Moscow for a fee of £9 million and was an instant hit, he scored his first goal in Russia in a 1-1 draw against city rivals CSKA Moscow and went ahead to score a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in another derby.

He scored 21 goals in 42 games, again an average of a-goal-a-game. He has yet to score for Fenerbache since his switch in the summer, but you cannot bet against him to come good yet again.

2014 World Cup: Eagles will qualify in style, says Nsofor

Obinna Nsofor has promised that Nigeria will qualify for the 2014 World Cup in fine style next month.

Nigeria will host Ethiopia on November 16 in Calabar after they took a 2-1 advantage from Addis Ababa at the weekend.

“We are not under any pressure after our win in Ethiopia. They will be the ones under pressure. We will play good football and score loads of goals to qualify for the World Cup,” Nsofor told MTNFootball.com.

The Lokomotiv Moscow forward admitted that Eagles suffered from the effects of the high altitude especially in the first half.

“The altitude affected most of us and we waited for them in the first half to give us what they had,” he said.

Meanwhile, second-half substitute Nosa Igiebor has declared that his best is yet to come for the Super Eagles.

Igiebor replaced Nnamdi Oduamadi in Addis Ababa to stabilise the midfield of the Eagles and allow Mikel Obi a free role behind the Eagles front men.

“It was a difficult game for us all, but we fought as a team to get the needed result,” he said.

“I was introduced to stabilise the midfield and I did it to the best of my ability, sincerely my best is yet to come for the Super Eagles.

“One thing I can say for now is that I will continue to give my all for this team to ensure that we make our country proud.”

Eagles showed they are true AFCON champions — Amokachi

Daniel Amokachi has said that the Super Eagles proved why they are African champions after the team came from behind to beat Ethiopia 2-1 in the 2014 World Cup play-off as Emmanuel Emenike scored a brace.

The Super Eagles assistant coach in a post-match chat informed: “It was a tough game, with the massive support from the Ethiopian fans.

“The pressure we had in the first half gave us a bit of a scare but in the second half, we showed we are the African champions after going down by a goal, scoring the equalizer and winner in less than 20 minutes.

“But it’s not over yet as we still have another 90 minutes to play in Nigeria and then we can really celebrate.”

    • Emenike’s brace silences Walya Antelopes

Emmanuel Emenike scored twice for Nigeria to move a step closer to the 2014 World Cup after a 2-1 win in Ethiopia on Saturday.

A spirited Ethiopia took the lead after 57 minutes through Behailu Asefa, when his cross from the left was wrongly judged by goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and the Cameroonian referee ruled it a goal.

But the African champions fought back and drew level through the individual brilliance of Emenike when he took on the entire Ethiopia defence before he fired past the goalkeeper.

Emenike would then be brought down on his way to goal a minute to full time by Aynalem Haile and the Fenerbache front man dusted himself to tuck away the resulting penalty.

The first half belonged to the home team Ethiopia as they dominated possession and created more chances.

Within the first two minutes, they forced two corners but against the run of play Victor Moses drilled his shot wide from inside the box after 14 minutes.

And seven minutes later, Nnamdi Oduamadi failed to make the most of a good opening when he was left all alone inside the box but scoffed his shot with the Ethiopia defence in total disarray.

The biggest talking point of the first half was in the 24th minute when Oboabona cleared off the goalline after Saladin Said had chipped past an onrushing goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

Television replays later showed the ball had crossed the line.

Ahmed Musa’s snap shot from the top of the box after 32 minutes was blocked by the Ethiopian goalkeeper.

Adane Girma skied his shots high over the bar after he had wiggled his way through the Nigeria defence and in first half stoppage time, Enyeama pulled off the biggest save of the first period when he parried for corner a goal-bound effort by dangerman Said.

After Ethiopia scored their goal in the second half, Nigeria fought back with Emenike’s leveller.

Nigeria then had a penalty appeal overlooked after Ahmed Musa was bundled over inside the box.

Two minutes later, the CSKA Moscow star saw his powerful shot from inside the box after a pass by Mikel crash against the right post.

Oboabona then did well to clear the danger in the 83rd minute after the rampaging Said found himself right inside the six-yard box but Turkey-based Oboabona was quicker to react.

The victory puts the Eagles in the driving seat for the return leg in Nigeria at the U J Esuene stadium, Calabar on November 16.
