    • Windscreen of bus smashed by irate Ethiopian fans
    • Panic stricken players absent from embassy reception

The Super Eagles paid a heavy price for the 2-1 victory they secured in Addis Ababa yesterday as reports have it that they were attacked by irate Ethiopian fans moments after the game.

Hundreds of fans of the home team who obviously could not come to terms with the reality that their national team had lost the game chased the bus conveying the Eagles back to their hotel from the stadium, hurling stones and pebbles at the Nigerian stars in the process.

The secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)Barr Musa Ahmadu told SportingLife that some players sustained various degrees of injuries from the violent conduct of the Ethiopians.

Ahmadu revealed that inspite of the fact that the Eagles were led out of the stadium by security men including dispatch riders, the fans vented their frustration on the Eagles unhindered.

“The irony is that we had adequate security and yet our team bus was smashed with stones by the fans,”the NFF scribe told SportingLife.

As a result of the ugly incident, the Super Eagles were visibly absent at the elaborate reception organised for them by the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia after the game.

SportingLife gathered that the players were so traumatised by the ordeal they encountered that they vowed not to step out of their hotel rooms until the entire delegation leaves for the airport to depart Addis Ababa in the early hours of today.

However, the NFF scribe had to apologise to the ambassador with the excuse that most of the players sustained injuries due to the hardness of the turf.

As at press time, it was not clear if the NFF would lodge an official complaint to FIFA on the incident.

  • Fly Eagles, fly

    Fly Eagles, fly

It is unthinkable that renowned marathoners Ethiopia will be in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, ahead of Nigeria’s Super Eagles. True, upsets are common in soccer, but not of the magnitude that will witness Ethiopia toppling African champions Nigeria. Tufiakwa, many will say, not out of arrogance or disrespect.

One isn’t expecting the Ethiopians to lie down to be slaughter. After all, they qualified from a group where many had written them off as upstarts. They have promised-as expected- to beat the Eagles in Addis Ababa. The humidity may affect the Euro-laden Eagles stars. Our players are used to cold climate. Having gone to Ethiopia during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, they have an idea of what to expect from the fans and the undulating turf inside the stadium.

But Nigerians are not new comers to high altitude matches. Beside, the NFF has provided the antidote by ensuring that the team arrives in Addis Ababa Saturday morning.

Eagles’ biggest challenge would not be the Ethiopians, but themselves. If they put their heart to the game and play to their potentials, the Walya Antelopes will be a stroll in the park.

Ethiopian fans may have this tendency to take the law into their own hands, but they understand the game. They are very passionate about their national team, just as we do. But, if the Eagles bury their players with early goals on Sunday, the task of qualifying for Brazil 2014 would have been half-done at dusk.

Victory will be guaranteed if the players work in unity. The ball should be given to the player with the clearest chance to score goals. Only goals count at the end of matches, not how well the team played or dribbled the most.

From the blast of the whistle, the mandate should be clear to the Ethiopians- that we want to beat them at home. It won’t be out of place, given our players’ pedigree.

With our players’ experience, they should dictate the pace of the game. Their passes should be accurate and shots targeted at the goal post. Our players’ objective on Sunday should be to win the game in the first half with plenty of goals. Leaving the goals late could be counter-productive because the weather would have taken its toll on our Europe-based stars.

A command performance from the Eagles will frustrate the Ethiopians. It will also kill their enthusiasm to fight to win the game. The challenge for the Eagles rests with how they implement the coach’s match plan and improvise when the need arises.

The Eagles have struggled in most away games because of the players’ sloppiness. We watched in awe in Kigali as the Rwandans drilled our better exposed players on the game’s rudiments. It took a tongue lashing from the chief coach for the players to rise to the occasion. Even with the harsh words from Stephen Keshi, it took the heroics of goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to secure the barren draw result in one of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In Monrovia, Enyeama was the villain, with his movement off the goal line, conceding two cheap goals that gave the Liberians a 2-2 draw.

Those were the Eagles’ early days, many would argue. But it is important to remind the players that there should be zero tolerance for mistakes when the game begins in Addis Ababa.

Keshi must field only our best players. He must read the game tactically. His changes must be spot-on. He must not hesitate to pull out any fumbling player whose replacement should play according to the coach’s instructions.

The Eagles have struggled on undulating surfaces in Africa because they are scared of sustaining career-threatening injuries. You cannot blame anyone for such caution. Yet they must adapt because the platform of playing at the World Cup cannot be lost on the

    Eagles more tactical than Ethiopia

Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Director of Technical, Nigeria Football Association (NFA), said on Thursday in Abuja that the Super Eagles were more tactical than the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia.

Ikpeme, who watched the Eagles’ training on Thursday, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the Eagles have all it takes to secure a 2014 World Cup ticket.

“In terms of the technical and tactical aspects of the game, I don’t see the Ethiopians having an edge over us. Our players are good and you can’t take it away from them,’’ he said.

The NFA Director of Technical said the association had made preparations for the “worst case scenario’’ in case the Ethiopians decided to adopt any negative trick. A NAN correspondent, who watched the training session, reports that Eagles striker Brown Ideye had a slight knock during the session.

This forced him to pull out of training to avoid aggravating the injury. He, however, told NAN that the injury was nothing to be afraid of as he had only a muscle cramp and not a tear.

NAN reports that Thursday’s training gave team head coach Stephen Keshi the opportunity to put to test his possible starting line-up as all 23 invited players struggled for first team shirts.

‘Eagles ‘ll not take Ethiopia for a ride’

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has assured that his players will not take their Ethiopian counterparts for a ride when they clash in Sunday’s crunch first leg final World Cup play-offs in Addis Ababa.

Though Nigeria are the reigning champions of the continent and equally boast of more established players than the Wayla Antelopes, the Big Boss posited that the East Africans deserve some measure of respect having come thus far in their quest to make the Brazil 2014 World Cup party.

“For them (Ethiopia) to have reached the last 10 for the World Cup play-off is no mean feat and we have huge respect for their achievement,” the coach told SuperSport.

“It only shows that their game at international level has continued to grow and you don’t want to take such a team for a ride. But we will play to our strength to earn a result from this game.”

Already the Eagles as well as the Nigeria delegation would hit Addis Ababa Saturday morning in time for Sunday’s all important duel.

Another fan, Shinma Fuyma, a contraction worker, said he can’t wait to meet Victor Moses face to face as he is also planning to be at the airport.

“My African brother, though this game is an important one for us, what I’m really happy for about this game is that it will give me the opportunity of meeting some of the Nigerian foreign players in the Premiership who I’ve been watching every week.

“My best player is Moses (Victor). I loved him more when he joined my team Liverpool on loan. Though I wonder why Mourinho will loan out such a player, I still hope we can get him on a permanent deal,” he said.

    Qualify, get special largesse

THE National Sports Commission (NSC) has promised a special package to reward the Super Eagles, if they eventually book a ticket to the 2014 World Cup slated for Brazil.

The Director-General of the NSC, Gbenga Elegbeleye told SportingLife in Abuja yesterday that the Eagles need all encouragement from all and sundry to win the remaining two play-off matches and pick the World Cup ticket. he said that is why the NSC has also prepared a special package for the team that would be revealed when they eventually win the ticket for the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

“Mind you if the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup, we have a special package for them. We will surely do something special for them. We are already preparing the special package for them because we are sure that the team will qualify for the Brazil 2014 World Cup. We are ready for the team in terms of compensation and encouragement.

“I know that Eagles Chief Coach Stephen Keshi knows his onions and is capable of leading this team to another success by booking the World Cup ticket like he led the team to win the AFCON 2013 in South Africa. My advice to him is to be focused and he should not give in to sentiments. He has to be more alive to his job than ever before because this is a very crucial stage of the qualification series.

“If Nigeria are African Champions, then Nigeria must be among the five qualifying teams for next year’s World Cup. I believe we have a strong and quality team to beat Ethiopia home and away so all we have to do is to support this team. So there can’t be any better support than what Mr President (Goodluck Jonathan) is offering the Super Eagles now.

Elegbeleye also thanked President Jonathan for his unflinching support to the Super Eagles since the qualification series started and for also approving funds to charter aircraft to airlift 200 supporters to Addis Ababa, the venue of the first leg play-off between the host team and the Super Eagles.

“Mr President (Jonathan) has graciously approved money for the airlifting of 200 members of the supporters club, logistics and other things that has to do with the match. That shows Mr President is taking this match seriously. That shows that with his kind gestures it means we have no reason not to go there and do well.

“It is a must do well match and we must qualify for the World Cup. We cannot afford to fail Nigerians. We won the last Africa Cup on Nations in South Africa and as African Champions, we have to prove that we worth the victory by picking the 2014 World Cup ticket. Nigeria should rank among the best in the world by booking the World Cup ticket. By the grace of God we will do well in Ethiopia and then we will come back to Nigeria and qualify for the World Cup”, he assured.

  • Injury scare for Eagles defender

Super Eagles defender, Gege Soriola, gave his South African side, Free State Stars a big scare on Saturday, as he went down after tackling an opponent during a League Cup game against AmaZulu.

The man called ‘The Rock’ by Free State fans, had won the ball off an AmaZulu attacker, but fell as he tried to advance with the ball.

He then held onto his ankle and was writhing in pain, as medics rushed onto the pitch to attend to him. But the man who prospered under Samson Siasia in the Eagles got up and was able to continue.

Soriola was injured around November of 2012 while playing for Stars, and it took him almost five months to resume play, as he lost his chance to play for Nigeria at the Nations Cup.

He was only recently recalled by Stephen Keshi.

Ethiopia may face Zambia for Eagles

Ethiopia may face Zambia in a warm-up match ahead of a 2014 World Cup playoff against Nigeria after they could not secure Ghana or Cameroon.

The Walya Antelopes welcome the Super Eagles on October 13 in the first leg clash for a place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) vice-chairman Teka Asfaw told a local radio station ShegerSport Radio that Ghana and Cameroon have rejected a warm-up against Ethiopia.

He said Ghana and Cameroon told EFF that their foreign-based players’ late arrival was the main reason for turning down Ethiopia’s request for a friendly.

The only chance remains for friendly match to the Walya’s seems to be with Zambia which the Zambian officials had confirmed their willingness to be in Addis Ababa as soon as their team returned from a similar friendly overseas.

The East Africans had also proposed to Egypt, but the seven-time African champions insisted the game be played in Cairo, which officials turned down as their qualifier against Nigeria is at home.

Ethiopian Football Federation vice Chairman Teka Asfaw also disclosed that the key players Shemelse Bekele,Addis Hintsa and Getanhe Kebede will be join the rest of the squad in Addis Ababa this weekend.
