Soccer enthusiasts urge Eagles to up their game

Soccer enthusiasts in Abuja have urged the Super Eagles of Nigeria to up their game at the ongoing 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Nigeria thrashed Tahiti 6-1 in their first Group B game of the cup competition, and Super Eagles will next face Uruguay on June 20 in their second group game.

Sanusi Mohammed, NFA’s director of competitions, congratulated the Super Eagles on the victory, but urged the players to keep the win aside and concentrate on the matches ahead.

“They should not think that they have arrived because the team they met today isn’t as strong as the teams they will meet later,’’ he said.

Mohammed said the Eagles must see the victory as a morale booster because they played the least difficult match of all the matches they have at the championship.

“They should not be complacent about the win because the opposition today did not make the match a good test for them because, despite the result, they wasted a lot of chances,” Mohammed warned.

Mansur Abdullahi, the FCT FA organising committee secretary, said the team was improving gradually, adding: “That is a good step in a right direction.

Meanwhile, a cross section of the fans in Abuja, who spoke to NAN expressed mixed feelings over the performance of the team.

Mr Suleiman Abubakar, a fan, commended the Eagles for a job well done, but insisted that the team must improve on its performances to enable them win their next match. He said there was the need for the coach to change his style and approach in their match against Uruguay.

Abubakar said this was necessary to ensure effective coordination among players and to encourage them to display their professional prowess.

Femi Babatunde, a football viewing centre operator, noted, with concern, the lack of team work among the players, a situation he said might affect their chances.

“The players are playing individual game, no team work. They must understand themselves and work as one to enable them win against Uruguay,” he said.

Jerry Tsee, a civil servant, observed that the Eagles squandered many of scoring opportunities.

“I was particularly disappointed at Ahmed Musa. We would have been 10 goals up if Musa and Brown Ideye had taken their chances at goal. They were rather too selfish and always wanted to go for glory all by themselves,’’ he said.

Mr Emmanuel Okoye, a businessman, noted that the Nigeria-Uruguay game would be a different ball game.

“Nigeria’s game against Uruguay and Spain will be crucial for us bearing in mind that they will both be looking to get maximum points off Tahiti. Our next game is a must win if we hope to make it out of the group stage,” he said.

Mr Femi Ajayi, an engineer, said the team was extremely good, adding that without the likes of Victor Moses and Emenike they still performed brilliantly.

According to him, the standard of the team was not low because Tahiti is also a good team to have participated in the tournament, stating that Super Eagles should expect a tough match ahead. He said even though Nigeria had built confidence for the next match, the team must work hard to maintain the speed of play otherwise they would be an underdog.

“We will be the underdogs in our match against Spain if we do not prepare hard against the other strong teams. Even Uruguay is a big team for us, so we have yet to start.’’

  • Eagles must take chances — Keshi

Eagles must take chances — Keshi

NIGERIA coach Stephen Keshi has pleaded with his players to be more ruthless in front of goal in the Confederations Cup after a string of missed chances in their 6-1 win over Tahiti.

Despite the heavy margin of victory on Monday night, the Super Eagles wasted a number of opportunities when one-on-one with the South Pacific islanders’ goalkeeper Xavier Simin.

The five-goal triumph leaves the African champions top of Group B, however, and Keshi insists that he is pleased with the team’s performance ahead of their game with Uruguay.

“We had some chances, they needed to bury the goals,” he told reporters after the match. “When you play a game like this you tend to give the opposition team the confidence to come back.

“They scored their goal and reacted a little bit. I’m happy with how we did and we’ll see how we get on against Uruguay.”

“(Our performance against Tahiti) was okay but because we didn’t have any idea of them, we did not know what to expect so it was difficult,” Keshi said after the game.

The Nigeria trainer however admitted that his players didn’t play at their usual tempo in the game.

“We did not play at our usual tempo. We gave them a chance to come back at us and play in a compact way in the middle,” he said.

Support in Belo Horizonte was largely in favour of their Oceanic opposition and Nigerian goals were not celebrated with much fervour, but Keshi dismissed this as having an effect on his players at the Mineirao.

“Most of the supporters are Tahitians or came out to boost their morale which is normal,” he added. “As a professional player you don’t need to worry about that.”

Following their clash with Uruguay on Thursday, Nigeria will face a final group game against Spain on Sunday.

Onigbinde, Erico hail Super Eagles’ brilliant start

Some notable football Stakeholders across the country have commended the Super Eagles for their brilliant opening at the ongoing Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil after their 6-1 victory against Tahiti.

The stakeholders, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday, urged the team to build on the performance.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles overwhelmed their Tahitian opponents by a whopping score line to top Group B of the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Following their brilliant start, Adegboye Onigbinde, a former Super Eagles Head Coach, charged the team to build on the momentum that their victory had generated.

“I think we should be happy for the Super Eagles and the Technical crew, but I implore them to build on this. I have always said this that there is no limit when it comes to possibilities; there is always room for improvement and I want to see a better Super Eagles in every match,’’ Onigbinde said.

In the same vein, Joe Erico– a former Green Eagles goalkeeper– described the match as a good step to greater development. Erico added that the Eagles should put the victory behind them, and face the Uruguayans squarely, because they will be tougher than the Tahitians.

“Good we won the match and it is a stepping stone to greater achievements as the competitions progresses. The players should put the victory behind them and concentrate on our next match against Uruguay, because it will not be an easy one,’’ Erico said.

Tayo Balogun, a sports analyst told NAN that the Super Eagles’ performance against the Tahitians was no big deal. He described the match as one between the Super Eagles, playing against a selected set of people who believe they know how to play football.

“It was good that they won the match and got the required three points to put them in a comfortable place, but their ability is yet to be ascertaineded in the competition. When they meet Uruguay we will be able to affirm their abilities and what they posses as the competition progresses,’’Balogun said.

Ex-international midfielder, Thompson Oliha, said that the match had proved that the players and technical crew were prepared for the competition. Oliha added that Nigerians should support the team, rather than attacking the players unnecessarily.

“Such negative talks will dampen their spirit and I want the coach to continually work on the players to ensure that their emotions are intact. When they don’t have things bothering their minds, they will be focused– because the ultimate thing needed in this tournament is concentration,’’ Oliha said.

•Maigari charges team to increase tempo for Uruguay

African champions Nigeria, in upbeat mood, arrived in Salvador, north-eastern Brazil Tuesday afternoon ahead of their much-hyped clash with South American champions Uruguay on Thursday.

The Eagles are majestically perched at the top of Group B of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup following a 6-1 trouncing of Tahiti in Belo Horizonte on Monday evening.

Spain’s Furia Roja (Red Fury) who edged Uruguay 2-1 in the first match of the pool on Sunday night, are second behind the African champions on goals difference. While the Spaniards will look to pile up the goals against Tahiti on Thursday, the Eagles have confidence they can overpower Oscar Tabarez’La Celeste and earn a semi final ticket ahead of their final group phase tango with world champions Spain in Fortaleza on Sunday.

NFF President, Aminu Maigari, understandably elated by the team’s goal-rious performance against the Oceanians on Monday, has charged the boys to increase the tempo against the tactically-aware Uruguayans.

“The Eagles have started well, and they are perching on top of the table as expected. We believe they have the strength and the savvy to go all the way and do our country and Africa proud. I want them to forget about the win over Tahiti and appreciate that Uruguay is a different ball game. They should work very hard and come out on top on Thursday,” Maigari said.

Salvador, the capital of Bahia State, is home to about 2.7 million people and is Brazil’s third most populous city. It was Brazil’s first capital city until 1763. It is also regarded as the black capital of

Latin America, as more than 80 per cent of its inhabitants are of African descent.

In other words, the African champions will not lack support inside the renovated Arena Fonte Nova when they clash with the Uruguayans starting from 7pm Brazil time (11pm Nigeria time) on Thursday.

Coach Stephen Keshi has also been telling his boys to believe in their ability as the boys cruised into the Hotel De Ville Tuesday afternoon.

“Nobody gave us the chance to triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. We love the status of underdogs that we have here and it will help us to achieve our objective of making Nigeria and Africa proud.”

Keshi was in the Nigeria squad that spent close to three months training and playing friendly matches in Brazil before going ahead to win the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in 1980. He missed the final cut because Brazilian Coach Otto Gloria, who took Portugal to third place at the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, felt he was too young.

However, Keshi has been eager to give the younger generation in his team good opportunities to showcase their wares, with the likes of Kenneth Omeruo, Ogenyi Onazi, Ahmed Musa, Nnamdi Oduamadi and Brown Ideye appearing to enjoy every moment of it.

“We are boarding now and we expect to land at 1.45pm (5.45pm Nigeria time). It is a flight of 80 minutes from Belo Horizonte. The team is in very high spirit. Everyone’s looking forward to Thursday’s match,” Enebi Achor, Team Administrator, said on telephone from the Belo Horizonte Airport.

After Thursday’s showdown with La Celeste, the Super Eagles’ train will move to Fortaleza for the much-anticipated clash with world and European champions Spain inside the Estadio Castelao on Sunday.

    Blatter ‘roots’ for Eagles

FIFA President Joseph Sep Blatter was a very happy man to see Nigeria arrive for the Confederation Cup and has not hidden his love for the Super Eagles.

The world football boss told a Nigerian official Idris Adama who is standing in for Nigeria Football Federation Aminu Maigari during the Eagles versus Tahiti match which ended in 6-1 in Eagles favour that Nigeria is his favourite team .

Blatter who also asked Adama if the NFF has fully resolved the bonus crisis expressed happiness when Adama answered in affirmative.

“Nigeria is my team. Any more problem?” Adama responded that all issues have been resolved and ready for the game against Tahiti. This chat was shortly before kickoff. I am happy you made it. I love Africa and I love Nigerian football.”

At half time with Nigeria three goals up, an excited Blatter told Adama: ” I told you Nigeria is my team. They are being generous that’s why they don’t want to score too many goals” he said jokingly.

    •Senate President reassures players
    •On prompt bonus payment

Senate President, David Mark (GCON) spoke with each player of the senior national team before its opening FIFA Confederations Cup game against Tahiti on Monday assuring them of the government’s support. The Nigeria side are in the competition as Africa Champions.

A National Assembly source revealed to SportingLife that the decision to contact the team in Brazil was as a result of the bonus dispute that nearly threatened its participation.

Mark is disturbed that the players can boycott their matches if promises earlier made about the payment of their bonuses are not redeemed.

“The Senate President called Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi yesterday afternoon to tell the players of his decision to take over the matter,” said the source.

The team’s murmurings and bickering reached the ears of the senate president through the Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Ibrahim Gumba and his counterpart at the lower house, Honourable Godfrey Gaiya.

“They were the ones who informed Mark because they witnessed the entire drama in Kenya and Namibia. Consequently, Mark in his official capacity as the number three citizen briefed President, Godluck Jonathan (GCFR) ,” said our source.

“Immediately the President called the Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi for further briefing on the budget constraints that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have been crying about. But one issue that they all faulted NFF for was the fact that they did not carry them along when they decided to rationalise the backroom staff and also slash bonuses of both players and officials.

” Do not forget that it was Mark that made the U.S. Embassy issue visas to the team ahead of their friendly game against Venezuela last year,” added the source.

It was also Mark that intervened after Keshi threw in his resignation letter immediately after Nigeria won the Nations Cup in January in South Africa. In a national daily yesterday, stand-in Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama reminded Nigerians that the bonus issue was not over. The players have insisted on NFF reverting to the 10,000 dollars win-in bonus and not 5,000 dollars.

    Presidential hammer looms over Eagles

Sources close to the Presidency in Abuja have hinted futaa.com on the possibility of seeing members of the Super Eagles squad being reprimanded for the way they went about their bonus row which ended painting Nigeria in bad light in the face of the comity of nations.

It is expected that the Presidency who before now had showered both players and officials of the national teams with cash and kind gifts would now probe the cause of the recent row and mete out the appropriate disciplinary action to whoever erred and caused the country unwarranted embarrassments.

The Super Eagles had refused to board plane to South Africa enroute Brazil after they rejected the 2500 dollars paid them for playing a draw with Namibia insisting that they would only accept 5000 dollars which was what they normally get for a draw.

This made them miss their flight and only arrived in Brazil only Sunday after monies were got across to the players.

    URUGUAY PANIC: Eagles’tie very important

Oscar Tabarez has stressed that Uruguay still has a chance of progressing to the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup if they can beat AFCON 2013 champions, Nigeria in their second Group B game at the 52,048-capacity Arena Fonte Nova – Salvador on Thursday.

Uruguay lost 2-1 to World and European champions Spain on Sunday.

The South Americans’ Coach admitted that things could have been a whole lot worse.

“I am relieved it was 2-1 and not a much heavier scoreline,” Tabarez told reporters afterwards.

“Taking into account the development of the game, it could have been a catastrophic result.

“Our next match, against Nigeria, is the most important of all, if we win then I think we have a chance of being in the semi-finals.

“Spain was highly superior in play at all times and deserved their victory. They imposed their conditions and we did not do what was necessary in terms of ball recovery.

“If Spain thrashed Italy and Germany, why should they not beat Uruguay? They are a team that impose their conditions and are playing in a tournament that they have unfinished business with.”

  • Confeds Cup: Nigeria defeats Tahiti 6-1

Nigeria Super Eagles on Monday night defeated Tahiti 6-1 at the end of the first half in the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Uwa Echejiele opened the scoring in the fifth when his shot took a slight deflection off a Tahitian defender.

Nnamdi Oduamadi doubled the scoring minute after he rounded off a sleek team work in the 10th minute.

He added his second of the night when he slotted home Ahmed Musa’s pull out in 26th minute.

The Tahitian put up a spirited fight, but lack of experience at this level proved their greatest undoing.

The Polynesia Island nation pulled a goal back through Jonathan Tehau in the 54 th minute, while three further goals through Oduamadi, Echiejile and Tehau’s own goal completed the rout.
