    Fabregas fires Super Eagles warning

CESC Fabregas says Spain will treat the upcoming Confederations Cup ‘as a World Cup’ and that could mean stiff test for the Super Eagles as they are grouped with the World Champions in Group B alongside Uruguay and Tahiti

La Roja are the world and European reigning champions with the prelude to Brazil 2014 being the only tournament they have still yet to win.

Fabregas, 26, insists victory is something that the players and fans are dreaming about.

“We will treat the competition as a World Cup or a European Championship, that feeling that you can finish your career after taking the European Championship, the World Cup and the Confederations is very important for us and for the fans even more,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

Fabregas also spoke publicly about Spain captain Iker Casillas, who he claims remains positive despite having found himself out in the cold at Real Madrid in recent months under former coach Jose Mourinho.

He continued: “I can see that he’s very well, as ever, the most important thing is his attitude and that’s always very positive. I’ve known him for seven years and he’s a great captain. In bad moments, he always is [positive].”

Super Eagles reject N.8m Kenya bonus

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have rejected the $5,000 (N800,000) bonus offered to them by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for defeating the Harambee Stars of Kenya in their World Cup qualifying game played in Nairobi.

The NFF, have been complaining about lack of funds, and are trying to implement a policy the board have been mulling for a year.

Inside sources in the NFF told futaa.com that the idea of reducing the bonus paid to the Eagles from $10,000 (N1.6m) for a win was first mooted after the Eagles failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup that was played in Angola, however, the policy was not implemented.

Observers have noted it will be tough to reduce the bonus now that the Eagles are African Champions since it was not done when they are yet to achieve the feat.

Meanwhile, the whole Kenya squad were promised an equivalent of about $47,000 (about N7.5m) to beat Nigeria in the same game .

  • No cause for alarm over Eagles – Erico

No cause for alarm over Eagles – Erico

Says players know what is at stake

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Joe Erico has dismissed fears in some quarters that Eagles may be boxed into a corner in their World Cup qualifier against Harambee Stars of Kenya today in Nairobi, following their 11th hour arrival for the showdown. He noted that the fears amounted to underrating the ability of the reigning African Champions.

The Jogo Bonito exponent opined that the technical crew and players know the importance of the match and are bound to do everything to achieve the needed result. He is said it was not out of place for players to travel long distance to honour matches, adding that as professionals they have the capacity to overcome.

He however admitted that the game will be tough as Kenya have never been a team to be pushed over whether playing at home or away.

The odds according to him favour the Eagles as the challenge of the Houston friendly against Mexico will serve as a morale booster to go all the way.

“’The match will be tough no doubt, and that is to be expected but I don’t share the fears that Eagles may not rise to the occasion. In fact I expect the friendly against Mexico in Houston to serve as booster. Tough match yes, but Eagles will win, “he enthused

Ahead of today’s showdown, some soccer fans in the country had expressed fears that the Eagles who only arrived Nairobi yesterday may find the match extremely difficult citing jet lag as reason. A cross section of fans who spoke to Sportinglife on the issue wondered why plans were made for the team to arrive match venue only 24 hours to kickoff noting that it might affect players output.

Play Eagles without fear Kenya legends urge Harambee Stars

Former goal keeper, Francis Onyiso and retired defender Tillen Oguta who starred against Nigeria in 1997 have urged the class of 2013 to play without fear when they host the Super Eagles in a 2014 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

The Nigerians arrived in Kenya on Tuesday just over 24 hours before they take on to the pitch after a stop over Addis Ababa en route from Mexico where they played out a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Retired first choice keeper, Francis Onyiso and defender Tillen Oguta who starred when Kenya held Nigeria 1-1 in Nairobi on January 12, 1997 are optimistic with belief; the current side can overcome the might of the African Champions for the first time.

Onyiso who was fondly known as “Kenya One” is now goal-keeper trainer at local side Ulinzi Stars and Sergeant at Kenya Defence Forces. And as a young custodian he made his name by being the last frontier for Stars on that occasion.

“Morale was the first thing we had. Without it and motivation, we could not perform. We were a new team and we knew they expected us to be defeated and it was up to us to prove a point,” Onyiso said in Nairobi.

“We had self belief, nothing is impossible and they have to be positive and the good thing now is that most of the players are exposed having played in Europe as compared to our time,” he stressed.

On the impact of missing the man hailed as his successor, Arnold Origi, in goal owing to suspension, the former custodian believes it is time for someone to step up in his shoes.

“It will be a big blow since goal keeping needs consistency but I believe the one who will take his place needs to use the opportunity to make a name. This is a normal game and he should give his best and play under no pressure,” he added.

“If we play well and wake up on the right side of the bed, then we shall win 1-0,” Onyiso said as his prediction.

Oguta, the former defender towered over the backline alongside Musa Otieno to restrict one of the most feared forwards in Africa at the time.

“What helped us at the time is we were a young team and we had played together in the U-20 and U-23 sides which I was the captain. When we came to the team, Musa Otieno helped us settle as the most senior player,” Oguta who featured for the national side until 2004 recalled.

“However, they should put the country first and know you are playing, you are your father, mother and everyone. We are celebrating our jubilee year and they should win it for the country,” he added.

Although the current Super Eagles side under Stephen Keshi are the reigning African champions, the Nigerian squad of 1997 was billed as the continent’s “Dream Team” having won the Olympic gold medal a year before in Atlanta.

It contained star names such as Daniel Amokachi, Victor Ikpeba, Finidi George, Taribo West, Celestine Babayaro, Akpoborie and Uche Okechukwu among others and were installed as outside bets to win the 1998 World Cup in France with good reason.

The late Ken Simiyu etched his name in the country’s football folklore when his header midway through the first half beat Joseph Dosu in the Nigeria goal before Jonathan Akpoborie equalised in the 50th minute.

To date, the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani that is the match venue has never been full to such capacity for a football match, with an estimated 90,000 filling every nook and cranny available in Kenya’s sporting cathedral during that match.

Eagles should be ready to play for 90 minutes – Oliha

Says Kenyans ready to torment Nigeria

Former Nigeria international, Thompson Oliha has charged Super Eagles not to lower their guards for the entire duration of the 90 minutes of their 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Harambee Stars today.

Oliha in a chat with SportingLife noted that although, the Kenyans would have the weather and their vociferous fans in their favour, the one-time Iwuanyanwu Nationale midfielder however beckoned on Nigeria’s representatives not to be intimidated.

“The game against Kenya will no doubt be tough but if the Eagles do not relax irrespective of the hostile environment they could get their desired result.

“We are not known for giving up easily. We are the current African champions and this we must show against the Harambee Stars so as to preserve our unbeaten run against them.

“The Kenyans will be bouyed by their home supporters and the weather and with their nature they will be ready to run at us for the entire 90 minutes. We must be ready for them,” Oliha admonished.

On the unavailability of some Kenyan national team regulars, Oliha implored the Eagles to concentrate solely on the East African country as a team and not on the players that are in the team or not in the team.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria would leave Kasarani without any defeat.

The Eagles are in first place with 5 points from 3 games and an expected victory in Kasarani’s Moi International Sports Complex will put Nigeria further in the driver’s seat ahead of the June 12 tie in Windhoek against Namibia.

  • Nigeria versus Mexico Eagles to Nigerians: We won’t disappoint you

Nigeria versus Mexico Eagles to Nigerians: We won’t disappoint you

If feelers from the Super Eagles camp in the United States of America is to be relied on, the national team of Mexico would definitely find it very tough against the Nigerian team led by Coach Stephen Keshi in the friendly encounter that have generated a lot of discussions in both countries.

Both sides have met at full international level 10 times with Nigeria having the upper hand; won five times, while Mexico has triumphed four times while one of the clashes ended in a draw. The last meeting between the teams was a 2-2 draw at Estadio Olimpico Benito Juare in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Football-loving Nigerians will have to keep vigil since the match would be played 8pm on Friday Texas, United States of America ( 2am on Saturday Nigeria time).

The main reason while the Nigeria Football Federation arranged this friendly encounter is to use it to prepare the Eagles for the two important 2014 World Cup matches all scheduled away to Kenya and Namibia on June 5 and 12, 2013.

The Super Eagles qualification for next year’s World Cup in Brazil is hanging on the balance as they are tied on the same five points with closest rivals Malawi and need to get results in Kenya and Namibia to stay on course for the World Cup. The Eagles then have the chance to run over Malawi in the last match of the qualifying rounds.

The Super Eagles had their second training session at the Houston community Amateur Sports Centre on Wednesday. All players were involved in the one hour fifteen minutes session.

A huge contingent of foreign and some Nigerian journalists alongside Head of Technical Department of the NFF, watched the training. Houston has a large Nigerian population who will troop out in their numbers to watch the Eagles.

Information scooped from one of the organisers of the game is that 55,000 tickets have so far been sold. The Reliant Stadium where the game will be played has a capacity of 70,000.

Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi admitted respect for the Mexican team but promised to make the game difficult for the Mexican team.

“I have huge respect for the Mexican team, they are a great football playing Nation that has produced great players, but my team will not sit down and watch them play. I enjoin Nigerians here in Houston and other parts of the United States to come and cheer us. It. will be an interesting encounter,” Keshi said.

Eagles stand-in Captain Vincent Enyeama said his teammates were taking the match seriously despite it being a friendly encounter. “Even though this is a friendly game, we are taking it very seriously and will give it our best shot,” Enyeama promised.

SS Lazio midfielder Onazi Ogenyi still savouring the joy of winning the Italian Cup said soccer fanatics in Nigeria expect the Eagles to win the game.

“Nigerians do not know what a friendly game is. Knowing our beloved people and great supporters, we are going for a win. We have to be organised in our game to achieve our target,” he said.

Eagles in form attacker, Brown Ideye said the team would give their best against Mexico but noting that the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kenya remains the ultimate. “Though this is friendly game, we will give it our best. The ultimate however is the World Cup qualifying matches.”

Eagles left back Elderson Echiejile also assures, “I’m hoping to have a good game.”

Newly invited Weder Bremen forward Joseph Akpala also expects a good match. “I am expecting a good game.”

Sunshine Football Club Captan and Eagles central defender, Godfrey Oboabona is also eyeing victory against Mexico.

“By the grace of God we will win this game, but the most important for us is the World Cup qualifying matches.”

  • FIFA Confederations Cup 2013: Pundits tip Eagles, Uruguay to battle for second spot

Ahead of next month’s FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, soccer-crazy pundits in South America are tiping Nigeria’s Super Eagles to battle Uruguay for the second-spot after admitting that world and European champions, Spain will likely lead the group.

Nigeria alongside Spain, Tahiti and Uruguay are in Group B but the pundits insist Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and pals will seek out some degree of redemption despite their ageing defence line.

“Godin, Lugano, and Maxi Pereira have been the stars of this defense for years. However, the trio have performed poorly in World Cup qualifiers and will need to improve to keep their spots for the upcoming round of qualifications. Godin and Pereira are still in their prime while Lugano is starting to creep past his best years.

“Uruguay has played poorly in recent months, but was lucky to be placed into the more favorable group. Instead of competing against Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and Italy, Uruguay will have to contend with Spain, Tahiti, and Nigeria. Spain will likely take the group, but Uruguay should not have trouble with Tahiti or Nigeria. They should finish anywhere between second or third place in the group. Prediction: If Uruguay continues its inconsistent play, they will end up third in the group,” said the report on Latinos Post.

Meanwhile, the release added that Uruguay’s forward position is its greatest asset. Suarez is unquestionably one of the best strikers in the world while Forlan provides a solid option if he manages to recapture his 2010 World Cup form. Cavani is another strong addition to Uruguay’s forward group.

KESHI BOASTS: World Cup is the real deal for Eagles

•Says team not a closed shop

The Nigerian Super Eagles are currently in camp in Nuremberg, Germany as they prepare for the challenges of World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia and the Confederation Cup in Brazil all in the month of June. The team leave Germany today, May 28, for Houston were they take on Mexico in a friendly this Friday,May 31 before the big ones against Kenya and Namibia. This is a huge month of June coming up for one of Nigeria’s most popular football men. Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi spoke exclusively to SUPERSPORT.COM’S CALVIN EMEKA ONWUKA on a number of issues.

DO YOU have all the Players you need in Camp now?

There are 20 players in camp and we are expecting more to join us in Houston before the friendly with Mexico”.

What do you expect to get from that match?

It is a fantastic opportunity for us to try new systems, integrate new players and get everyone into the right match mentality just before we face Kenya.

Nigerians and indeed most of Africa was surprised that the Kenya match ended with Eagles salvaging a draw in the last minute. What have you learnt from that game or what exactly went wrong?

Oh! There were too many distractions before the game. Also the home-based players were not fit and a lot of outside influence but that will not happen again.

A lot of people did worry that the host state government turned that match into some carnival to welcome the newly crowned African champions. Too many people forgot that there was indeed a match to be played? After that draw the Kenyans have been bullish in their hopes for the return. So what surprises do you have in mind.

I am not saying anything except to say that God is working with us and that we will be prepared for this match. The focus is there and we have the determination to get a good result.

The Super Eagles will be competing in the Confederation Cup a fore runner for the World Cup in Brazil. A prestigious tournament for sure but a friendly one in every way. So, if you are asked to choose now – win the FIFA Confederations Cup or Qualify for World Cup 2014 with the Super Eagles?

I will choose qualifying for the World Cup each time. Yes, the FIFA Confederations Cup is also good but nothing beats or compares to FIFA World Cup, that is the real deal. That is where I aim to be and where I want my players to be playing”.

“Make no mistake we will give the tournament our best shot but it is really to come back next year as one of Africa’s representatives at the World Cup that we are working towards”

There seems to be a clamour for new blood to be added to the Nigerian squad with a lot of players born and bred in Europe but of Nigerian descent about. Is there a plan to try and look for or any hope for these players?

For sure. I am always looking at ways and players who will improve this team; so if I see any player or players who I believe can improve on what we have currently I shall get them in and have a look at them closely.

It is not always about playing ability, it is also about the player or players fitting into the team ethics we are building here. The Super Eagles team is not a closed shop.

  • Kenya President urged to declare Public Holiday For Eagles’ tie

Kenya President urged to declare Public Holiday For Eagles’ tie

FORMER Kenyan international and Africa’s celebrated soccer legend Joe Kadenge has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to consider declaring the 5th of June a public holiday as Kenya welcomes African champions Nigeria for a crucial must win World Cup qualifier match in Nairobi.

The match will be played at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani on a date that falls on a working day – Wednesday.

Kadenge says there is a likelihood of many Kenyans missing the match since kick off has been set for 4:0PM a time when many will still be at work.

“The match will be at Kasarani on a Wednesday and we know the stadium is very far away from the City center unlike Nyayo

stadium. So as a former player, I urge the authority especially his Excellency the president Uhuru Kenyatta to declare a public holiday on this day.” Kadenge said in Nairobi on Saturday morning.

Kenya needs the win against Nigeria to rise to 5 points same as Nigeria with whom they drew 1-1 in the first leg match played in Calabar earlier in the year. Currently Kenya is at the bottom

spot after three matches with two points from two draws and a loss.

The match as moved a few days earlier since Nigeria will be taking part n the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Football Kenya Federation chairman Sam Nyamweya also added voice to the call on the president and his deputy to consider the holiday or even a half working day.

“Our boys will need maximum support from the fans on that day.

I know the president is listening. We appreciate that in their manifesto, the Jubilee team stated clearly that they will put a lot of emphasis on sports. We need all the support to humble the Nigerians here in Nairobi as we continue on our journey to Brazil in 2014.” Nyamweya said.

Nyamweya further welcomed the president to attend the match

at Kasarani. President Uhuru Kenyatta gave the team One Million shillings after the draw against Nigeria.

Recently, during the KPL derby, deputy president William Ruto

was among the thousands of Kenyans who attended the AFC

Leopards vs. Gor Mahia match at Nyayo stadium. Ruto gave both teams half a million shillings after the match that was won
