Easter: Food prices reduction excites Lagos consumers, traders

Some Lagos State foodstuff traders and consumers have expressed respite over the price stability of foodstuff during this year’s Easter celebration.

They disclosed this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.
A cooked food trader, popularly known as Iya Adetoun, said prices of food items have remained stable despite the Easter celebration.

She, however, complained about the high increase in the cost of pepper.

“The prices of food items have relatively remained the same despite the Easter celebration.

“The prices of rice, beans, garri and other food items have remained constant this season.

“The only problem we have is in the price of pepper. Pepper has become the new gold. We buy a small paint bucket of pepper for as high as N15,000 from the wholesale market at Ile-epo.

“We really need intervention in the price of pepper, the price of tomato has been considerably good, depending on what time to get to the market and how fortunate you are in bargaining.

“There is actually no much difference in the price of food items this Easter,” she said.

On her part, Mrs Lilian Agunbiade, a house wife at Agege area of the state, also corroborated the normalcy in the price of food items this Easter.

“There is no much difference in the price of item I bought two weeks ago and today in preparation of Easter.

“I am glad the prices are stable but I believe the low purchasing power of Nigerians have made the prices stable this year’s Easter.

“Everything I purchased is within the price I expected (usual price regardless of the season) but tomato and pepper have gone up a bit.

“However, prices are not too high. I believe it is just an effect of demand, given that this is Easter weekend.

“A small paint bucket of pepper we used to buy at N4,000 now sells at N25,000 for the same quantity,” she said.
Also, Mrs Antonia Sanwo, a caterer, affirmed the normalcy in the price of food items.

“Relatively, every food item I priced at the market today, were within the usual price range.

“I got to the market late and expected to be ripped off due to the Easter celebration but to my surprise the prices were relatively fair.

“I bought a big bunch of ugu (pumpkin leaves) for N1,000 and a sizeable quantity of water leaf for less than N1,000.

“Even the price of ogbono has dropped, as of two weeks ago, a cup sold for more than N3,000 but presently it sells for N2,000.

“The only item with a high price is crayfish. The price keeps soaring. A paint bucket now sells above N14,000 as against N9,000 sold weeks back,” Sanwo said.

Mrs Doris Nwaigwe, a businesswoman at Dopemu area of the state, said only the cost of vegetables was on the high side in comparison to other food items.

“The cost of vegetables for making fried rice is quite expensive. I got few strands of spring onions for N500, few pieces of carrots for N1,000 and green peas cost almost a arm and a leg.

“Apart from that other food items have stable prices, it does not seem like Easter celebration is ongoing.
“The price of frozen food like chicken and turkey are the same, I bought a kilo of chicken for N5,900 as usual, so the Easter celebration does not have so much effect on the price,” Nwaigwe said.

Another resident at Surulere, Mrs Ifeoma Achaku, owner of a store at Lawanson Market, said a bag of rice costs between N75,000 and N85,000, depending on the type.

Achaku noted that there was some price fluctuations in the price of rice, which poses inability to have a fixed price.

“Rice prices differ based on grain type, with long-grain and short-grain options available. I focus on local rice, as its more budget-friendly compared to imported rice.

“However, price fluctuations pose a major challenge, making it difficult to set fixed prices.

“Prices change frequently making customers to complain about instability.

“Despite this, sales have increased ahead of Easter, although they are not as high as before,” Achaku said.

Also, another vendor at the Idi-Araba market, Mrs Ibironke Enimola, reported a significant price drop for palm oil and groundnut oil.

“A small refill bottle of palm oil now costs between N1,600 and N1,800, while groundnut oil sells for N2,200 to N2,500.

“The larger bottles are priced at N2,500 to N3,000 for palm oil and N3,500 to N4,000 for groundnut oil.

“Refill bottles are popular among customers due to their affordability, with palm oil costing N1,600 to N1,800 and groundnut oil selling for N2,200 to N2,500.

“Sales have also increased due to Easter preparations,” Enimola said.

Mrs Iyabo Abiola, a grocer seller at the Censors Market in Surulere, noted that condiments are relatively affordable, particularly when compared to supermarket prices.

“If you are not buying from a supermarket, condiments here are considered cheaper.

“The price difference can vary depending on the type of condiment, with some locally produced spices being cheaper than imported ones,” Abiola said.

Easter: Northern CAN demands renewed security strategy, improved girl education in north

As Christians mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called for renewed national sacrifice and a united effort to tackle insecurity, empower women, and prioritise girl-child education as vital steps toward rebuilding Northern Nigeria.

In an Easter message signed by its chairman, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, CAN condemned the ongoing violence in parts of the North—especially Plateau and Benue States—describing it as a blemish on the nation’s conscience and a serious threat to future stability.

“The Easter season should awaken our collective conscience,” the statement read. “It is a time to rise above selfish interests, disunity, and fear, especially as Northern Nigeria grapples with insecurity, moral decline, and leadership failure.”

The association expressed grave concern over the devastating impact of violence and displacement on families and communities and urged governments at all levels to act with “urgency, compassion, and conscience.”

CAN also called for a strategic shift in addressing the crisis, including compensation for victims of violence and the implementation of grassroots peacebuilding and trauma-healing programmes.

Beyond the security concerns, CAN spotlighted the pivotal role of women in societal development, urging both government and communities to invest in women and girls through education and mentorship.

“When we deny girls access to education, we threaten our collective future,” the group stated, adding that “a girl denied education today may become a mother tomorrow who lacks the tools to steer her family away from ignorance and extremism.”

CAN referenced biblical figures like Queen Esther, Deborah, and Mary the mother of Jesus, as timeless examples of female leadership and courage, stressing that Northern Nigeria must begin to raise a generation of daughters “prepared for leadership and impact.”

The statement further urged parents to treat the education and moral upbringing of their children as sacred duties and implored leaders to emulate Christ-like leadership rooted in service, accountability, and empathy.

“As we celebrate Easter, let it inspire concrete action. Let it drive us to build a future where governance is anchored on justice and equity, where women are empowered to lead, and where children are nurtured in truth and love,” CAN concluded.

The recent trend of business brands displaying disregard for the values and religious inclinations of their customers is becoming increasingly deplorable.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Sunday shared an Easter message in a flier via its X account.

The message, which sparked widespread condemnation from many Nigerians who viewed it as disrespectful to the significance of Easter, reads: “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.”

Reacting, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), demanded a public apology, noting that the message was offensive to the Christian faith.

However, on Tuesday, Dare Adekambi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji said its intention was not to denigrate the message of Easter but to engage taxpayers and remind them of their civic duty.

The service rendered an “unreserved apology” to CAN and Nigerians, adding that the agency had no religion and had no intention to offend adherents of the Christian faith.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a statement by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) about a flier posted on our social media platforms with the headline ‘Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.’

“As a responsible government agency, we would like to say we did not put out the flier purposely to denigrate Jesus Christ or detract from the huge sacrifice He made for humanity. We are acutely aware that the essence of the Easter period is to celebrate this huge sacrifice.

“The message was our way of uniquely engaging taxpayers, to remind them of the need to prioritize payment of their taxes as a civic obligation.

“Yes, we would say the message ruffled feathers in some circles. The unintended meaning/insinuation being read into the post was not what we were out to communicate as an agency.

“Good a thing, this much is acknowledged by CAN in its statement wherein it said, ‘We recognize that the intended message may have been to creatively engage taxpayers…’ We wish to offer our unreserved apologies for this misinterpretation.

“FIRS, as a responsible agency, has no religion and will not bring down any religion or offend the sensibilities of adherents of various faiths in the country.

“Our goal is to assess, collect, and account for revenue for the wellbeing of the Federation. It is an investment in the country’s progress when citizens pay taxes. Once again, we wish to apologize to CAN and Christians who felt offended by the unintended consequence of our message on Easter Sunday”.

Here are others that published contentious Easter messages:

    1. Sterling Bank

During Easter 2022, Sterling Bank posted a celebration message to customers and followers.

The celebration message was titled “Like Agege Bread, He Rose!”

It generated a lot of backlash from Nigerians, mostly Christians.

Majority of users demanded that the post be brought down immediately and an apology be tendered by the bank.

The Nation observed the Easter message was designed in a banner and shared on the social media pages of the bank and subscribers’ mails.

However, the management of Sterling Bank Plc apologised to Nigerians over its comparison of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to the rise of Agege bread.

The bank reacted to the outcry by pulling down the banner on its social media page, replacing it with another banner and tendered an apology.

The apology banner reads: “…Let he who has never sin cast the first stone.” For our recent error, we sincerely apologise. Forgive us in the spirit of Easter!”

The bank added: “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

“We humbly celebrate His resurrection, the defeat of death and the hope of salvation.”

    2. Peak Milk

FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc, makers of the popular Peak milk brand, in Easter 2023, came under heavy criticism by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and many Nigerians for symbolising Jesus Christ’s crucifixion in a manner the body interprets unacceptable.

In the controversial advert, the company used the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as a metaphor to promote their product on Good Friday, a move that CAN described as: “totally unacceptable” to the Christian population.

The company had depicted Jesus’ crucifixion using a can of evaporated Peak milk and a nail used to punch the milk. The advertisement reads: “Bruised and Pierced for us. #GoodFriday.”

However, FrieslandCampina apologised to CAN for using the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as a metaphor to promote their product on Good Friday.

The social media advertisement was subsequently withdrawn.

The Director of (Corporate Affairs), FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc, Ore Famurewa, acknowledged the sensitivity of the social media post, “considering the sobriety of the season.” She also stated that it was not intended to make “light of the significance of the season nor to inordinately exploit the unmatched sacrifice of Jesus Christ.”

  • Easter Bazaar and leftovers

    Easter Bazaar and leftovers

Welcome another beautiful month, April! There’s a certain appeal that comes with season leaves a foretaste of excitement in one’s imagination. Last weekend, Easter happened upon us with a twist.

Remember the biblical story of Jesus and the 12 baskets, in which the multitude ate and there were leftovers; that was what played out when the ladies of the Women’s Corner decided to hold a garage sales to raise money for diverse just courses that we believed in on Easter day.

The day met us prepping up for the sales with each of us bring what we had. We woke up very early to set up for the day after deciding to use our usual spot under the Ebelebo tree as our site a night before.

“Let’s make it a day to remember,” Sexy Jola said as a spread table cloth over one of the large tables; while Tamara and Tinu took care of decorations. I joined Cordelia to arrange some wares on the ground close to side of block.“Are you sure we don’t need canopy,” Ada asked a third time after returning from surveying the parameter from the second floor.

“We are good, Ada. Even though I’m no weather forecaster I don’t think it won’t rain today,” Christabel, whose idea it was to hold the garage sales as the vice chairperson of the Estate executives, responded under the weight of some boxes she was bring from her husband’s jeep. She said many families are finding hard to make ends meet. “It would be nice to put some smiles on people’s faces this Easter by holding the sales with highly subsided prices to include clothes, shoes, home essentials and foodstuffs, etc.” Mummy Yinusa was asked to supply some food items.

And as her thought crossed my mind, she walked in with three truck pushers, bearing the foodstuffs.  “Oya, Evelyn, come join me to help offload these,” Ada called out to me. I drag Lola along with, angry that she had to call me for such heavy task. Perhaps, seeing that the task was getting too tedious for the ladies, our men and the kids joined us and took over, while we ran off to prepare for the sales.

Like the multitude at the sermon on the Mount did not expect they would go home with belle filled to the point of leaving behind twelve basket leftovers, that was experience by the time I joined the pack downstairs.  Everywhere was buzzing with people and activities. I found that many more things had been brought. The garage sales had become an Easter Bazaar with some person buying things twice or thrice the going price. Although we had visitors from all walks of life, we had a mixed crowd with some executive guests supporting the course; with donations and just picking a thing or two in return.

“Guess sharing the flyer on our different platforms paid off after all,” I muttered to myself as I approached the crowd. By the time it was evening, the crowd seemed to have changed to those who were there for window shopping alone. “How come our new set of customers are just pricing and not buying anything,” Tinu complained silently to Ada who informed her that to put smiles on their faces, the Estate excos had deliberately invited very low income families too. But they were asked to come in by 3.30pm. As if listening to our conversation, Christabel alerted us. “It’s time ladies.” We gave each family and individuals things for little or nothing at all. We made sure each person left there with almost every range of products on display. By the time we were done, we gathered at Christabel’s place for an after party, recounting with joy the day’s activities.

  • Politicians abhor Easter

    Politicians abhor Easter

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT), governors, former presidential aspirants, and various cadres of party leaders, have all profoundly espoused the message of Easter which is sacrifice, love and charity. Some have even called on Nigerians to emulate the sacrificial lamb, Lord Jesus Christ, who willingly laid down his life for the salvation of mankind. In their epistles, they prop Nigerians to emulate Jesus, so the nation could make a quantum leap to overcome her many challenges. But do they heed their own message?

In his Easter message, PBAT praised Nigerians for their resilience in the face of harsh economic challenges, associated with his reform agenda. His spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, puts it succinctly: “The President strongly commends Nigerians for the sacrifices they have made in the past few months for the nation to be steered to the path of recovery and sustainable growth, assuring them that the seeds of patience which they have sown are beginning to sprout and will in no time bring forth abundance of good fruits.”

In his message through his special adviser on media and publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the senate president Godswill Akpabio said: “Just as Jesus Christ in His humility and love offered Himself for redemption of mankind, I admonish us to emulate Him and make sacrifices for one another.” Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his message enthused: “At the heart of Easter is the triumph of light over darkness. It is a season that reminds us that the Almighty God can turn an unpleasant situation around for the good of His people.”

The Minister of the FCT Nyesem Wike, postulated: “In the story of Easter, we find the ultimate symbol of sacrifice in the selfless act of Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for the redemption of humanity.” Similar good words for the nation were delivered by former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and that of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who attended the Easter Mass, organized by the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, at Onitsha Correctional Centre.

But despite these profound messages of love, charity and sacrifice, one wonders why all the wars going on between our politicians? For example, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Simi Fubara, presently, are mortal enemies. Is it that they don’t hear their own messages and that of their other colleagues, who are pontificating on the essence of Easter? Or is it, a case of doctors who don’t use their own medicine? Clearly, the trouble between Wike and his former protégé Fubara, can be solved if they imbibe the spirit of sacrifice embodied by Jesus Christ.

While Wike is claiming that Fubara is working to destroy the political structure that brought him to power, Fubara is alleging that Wike is overbearing and seeking to remote-control his government. The fallout of the war has been enormous on the state, with the most visible being the burning down and subsequent pulling down of the legislative building of the state. The temporal peace achieved by the intervention of President Tinubu appears to be yielding to pressure, with the state House of Assembly threatening to resume the impeachment proceeding earlier halted.

Again, in the Labour Party, a civil war has broken out between the party’s executive committee and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), which claim to be the owners of the party. In what the NLC has described as a kangaroo convention, Julius Abure, was conveniently returned for a fresh tenure as party chairman. While Abure is saying the convention met all the requirements of law, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has technically declared the convention invalid, by saying, INEC, did not monitor the convention as required by the Electoral Act.

On it part, the president of NLC, Joe Ajaero, is also not sitting comfy, as the presidency has declared him a politician in labour’s clothing. This column has earlier warned Ajaero, that the NLC was moving into the slippery terrain of party politics, with all its consequences. Now, while the NLC president, unabashedly claims to be the owners of Labour Party, the president of the party, tutors him that the party is an independent legal entity, under the law, and cannot be owned by the NLC.

Stirring in Kaduna State, is another potential war between the former governor of the state, Nasir El Rufai and his protégé and successor, Senator Uba Sani. Firing the first salvo, El Rufai’s son, Bashir El-Rufai, claimed that Governor Sani, is incompetent for disclosing the heavy indebtedness of the state publicly, and how it has impacted the payment of salaries. His elder brother, and House of Representatives member, Bello El-Rufai, who appears more amenable to the message of Easter, disagrees with his brother.

In his intervention, the Honourable affirms loyalty to the state governor, nothing that there is nothing wrong in the governor publicly declaring the financial health of the state. In pledging his loyalty, he noted that his father, the former governor, declared the money handed over to the incumbent governor, in the handover notes. Other former friends turned foes, who have abandoned the message of Easter, are Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, and his estranged friend and deputy, Phillip Shuaibu, presently facing impeachment threats. Interestingly, when Obaseki was warring with his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, the deputy governor, Shuaibu, abandoned his mentor, Oshiomhole and sided with Obaseki.

There are several other examples of politicians across the country, showing that while our politicians pontificate about the enduring sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which as one of them noted is the reason for the season, their actions are far from their words. But how can they be preaching sacrifice, when they are not ready to make the littlest of such sacrifices. Jesus whom they ask us to emulate, in case they don’t understand, was sinless, but willingly gave his life for the sake of sinners.

Throughout his ministry, Jesus showed empathy and love to the poor and the downtrodden. He fed and cured them at no cost. When the powerful forces of the day sought to put heavy loads on them, he sided with the lowly of heart. He eschewed violence of any sort, and even when his disciples sought to defend him with violence, he rebuked them, and replaced an ear that was caught off. Above all, he gave his life, in atonement for the sins of others.

So, clearly while their messages at Easter resonate, their actions enrage the people. They cannot ask the people to emulate Jesus, the reason for the season, when their actions show them as enemies of the teaching of Jesus Christ. No doubt, if they can practice a modicum of the love espoused by Jesus, the nation would be the better for it. Perhaps, 2024, will herald a new beginning.

Nigerians   have been admonished not to relent in their hope, sacrifice and faith expressed in God, especially as exemplified by the death and resurrection of Christ.

    Umahi preaches hope, sacrifice, love

Minister of Works David Umahi encouraged Nigerians to stay grounded in their faith in God and let the message of Jesus Christ’s resurrection guide their actions, especially in times of adversity.

Umahi emphasised that the themes of hope, sacrifice, love, and forgiveness inherent in the resurrection should resonate with Nigerians as they look towards the country’s future.

He said: “This is a season to reflect on a life of consummate love of humanity and the salvific plan for  mankind which was demonstrated on the cross of Calvary by Jesus Christ, and the joy, hope, redemption and new beginning that resonate in the memories of his resurrection.

“It is a season that reminds all Christians that with his resurrection power, death no longer has a sting and the grave has no victory. Let us acknowledge the potencies of hope, sacrifice, love, forgiveness, faith, resilience, victory, and the free gift of salvation which are the lessons of his resurrection. Even in the face of daunting challenges, let us act with faith towards God and hope towards the future of our nation.

“May the hope that Easter brings take you to places beyond your imaginations and capacities. May the good times and treasures of your today become the golden memories of your tomorrow and, in challenging times, may things work out for your good and God’s glory.”

Gen. Lagbaja: Army will defeat insecurity

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, reiterated the commitment and determination of the Army to defeat insurgents, marauding bandits, and other external and internal aggression disturbing the country’s peace.

Gen. Lagbaja urged officers and soldiers to pray for continued operational successes, and to espouse love, peace, and sacrifice in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, the Army under his leadership continues to record successes in various operations at home and abroad, especially in the ongoing Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast and other internal security operations nationwide.

He said: “As we continue to push towards the final onslaught on the adversaries troubling our nation, I assure you that the welfare of officers and soldiers, including training and provision of the needed equipment, will always be prioritised to enable us discharge our constitutional responsibilities effectively.

“Let me acknowledge and thank you, my officers and soldiers, for your doggedness in tackling the numerous security challenges bedeviling us as a nation. You have displayed much commitment, courage, resilience, and professionalism. For this, I say well done and charge you not to rest until we have eliminated all forms of threat to our country.

“While still grieving the recent unwarranted and gruesome murder of our colleagues in Okuama, Delta State, I urge you all to remain steadfast, diligent, and committed to the discharge of our constitutional responsibilities. I encourage you to continue to pray for the repose of the souls of our departed colleagues who paid the supreme price for the noble cause of keeping our beloved country safe.

“I will continue to prioritise the welfare of our officers, soldiers, and families, including those of our departed colleagues.”

‘Nigerians should be conscious of God in their actions’

Lord Bishop of the Lagos West  Diocese of (Anglican Communion), Rev. James Odedeji, urged Nigerians and Christians to be God-conscious in their actions, whether in public or private life. He said people must realise that God is everywhere.

Rev. Odedeji noted that citizens must always remember that Christ, the Prince of Peace, reigns and awaits the coming of His true followers.

He said: “We are once again in that season of the year when we mark the trial, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is indeed worth remembering that self-sacrifice opened the door to heaven to those who know and follow Him acceptably.

“Easter reminds us that righteousness exalts a nation and sin is a reproach. All of us, leaders and followers alike must be Christ-like and live as those believers in Antioch lived.”

APC to Nigerians: stay confident of a brighter future

The All Progressives Congress (APC) charged Nigerians to stay confident and hopeful for a brighter and more prosperous future under President Bola Tinubu.

A statement yesterday by the National Publicity Secretary, Henry Morka, reads: “Easter commemorates the resurrection of the crucified Jesus Christ. It symbolises His victory over death and typifying the triumph of light over darkness.

“On this important occasion, we are reminded of God’s infinite capacity to turn dark clouds to silver linings, and hopelessness to great hope and fortunes. We urge Nigerians to stay confident and hopeful for a brighter and more prosperous future for our country.”

Ojelabi- Our pains will translate to gains

We must always be ready to carry our cross by embracing tough situations with humility after Jesus Christ.

“We should be submissive to constituted authorities at the various levels and be ready to make sacrifices in whatever situation. We should also be ready at all times to forgive anybody who offends us as Christ forgave all his persecutors before he died on the cross.

“Let us continue to strengthen our relationship with God, our reliance on God and renewed hope in God, and He will surely perfect everything that concerns us at his appointed time.”

She said: “The resurrection of Christ signifies the central doctrine in Christianity and firmly symbolises the greatest love of God for mankind. Jesus paid the supreme price to reconnect humanity with divinity, after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.

“Through the victory of Christ over death, all believers will subsequently have a taste of his victory over sin and death. To this end, Easter represents an important season for Christians and is celebrated globally as a time to reinforce the virtues of sacrifice, charity, love, and absolute faith in God.

“My dear children, beyond the celebration, I urge you all to imbibe the spirit of tolerance, peaceful co-existence, and sacrifice for one another, which Jesus Christ demonstrated throughout his period on earth. The resurrection of Christ should be a constant reminder for everyone to extend the virtues of selflessness, love, sacrifice, and tolerance.

“Jesus is risen! He has conquered sin and death and he is alive! He assures us all of the same fate. That is the message of Easter for every human being, irrespective of their life condition.

“Jesus is risen, but how much joy can people have when they are under terrorist attacks, bombardment at war or even in the den of kidnappers? What is the meaning of victory and justice for those who cannot afford a decent meal in a day or who though sick, have no means with which to care for themselves?

“This is where Jesus needs all who feel the resurrection, joy and life to witness his power and victory. We must find a way of making the mood of Easter reach all the nooks and crannies of our world.

“I call on Nigerians, as witnesses to the resurrection, to help one another see that the tomb is already empty and that the death of Good Friday lost its sting and ended with Easter Sunday resurrection.

“If we rejoice in Christ’s victory and power, help others to feel it too. Tell it all around you that Jesus is risen, alleluia is our song of joy. Do your best to share God’s compassion with all you have and God will do the rest.”
