  • Political, ethnic, religious blood letting unacceptable – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday felicitated with Nigerians as they celebrate the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter.

According to him, the CHANGE agenda of his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) will come faster if Nigerians imbibe the virtues of Jesus Christ and place national interest above selfish, personal and group interests.

The message was contained in a statement signed by President Buhari.

He said: “I rejoice with you all, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, as we celebrate Easter. For Christians all over the world, this celebration is in commemoration of the supreme sacrifice which Jesus Christ made for the salvation of mankind.

“The Gospels also tell us that during his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ repeatedly urged his disciples and followers to ‘love one another as I have loved you’.

“As we celebrate Easter this year, I sincerely believe that it will serve our dear nation very well if we all imbibe this essential message of Jesus Christ and truly learn to love our countrymen and women as we love ourselves.,” he added.

Nigeria, he said, will make faster progress towards achievement of the peaceful, united, strong, progressive and prosperous nation if Nigerians eschew all divisive, parochial, ethnic and religious sentiments and rivalries, and begin to live more harmoniously with each other like Jesus Christ.

He added: “Our unfortunate notoriety in recent years as a country where the blood of men, women and children are wantonly and callously shed in frequent orgies of criminal, political, ethnic and religious violence has become very embarrassing and utterly unacceptable.

“My administration is determined to achieve greater peace and security across our nation by ending the avoidable conflicts and crises that hinder our national progress.

“I ask for greater support from all Nigerians in this regard. We must put a stop to politically motivated killings. Our communities must be made safe again for all inhabitants to live together in peace and harmony,” he said.

He noted that the Nigerian armed forces, police and other security agencies are being progressively reformed, repositioned and empowered to win the war against terrorism and make mass killings, abductions and other criminal atrocities things of the past in Nigeria.

He also urged all Nigerians to play their parts as patriotic citizens and do all that they can to ensure that Nigeria is made a safer, more peaceful and happier place for its people and others.

Stressing that faith, belief and the fulfillment of expectations are also key themes of the Easter celebration, he urged Nigerians to continue to have faith in the future greatness of Nigeria and to believe that the CHANGE of his administration will come to fruition.

“That CHANGE, which we all yearn for, will certainly occur more rapidly if we all place the love of our country above selfish personal and group interests.” He said

The President promised that his administration will do everything possible to implement the recently passed 2016 Budget.

“The National Assembly has just passed the 2016 budget. I assure all Nigerians that we will do our utmost best to ensure that the budget, the first since my election as President, is efficiently and successfully implemented towards achieving our objective of faster economic growth and development,” he said.

He thanked Nigerians for their patience and understanding in the first ten months of his administration.

“As we go forward, I assure you all that we are working very hard to overcome the challenges we encountered on assumption of office.”

  • Easter: Amosun urges christians to emulate Christ

As Christians all over the world celebrate Easter, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has urged Christians in Ogun State and Nigeria, to pattern their lives after Jesus Christ.
In his Easter message, the Governor urged Christians and indeed all Nigerians to learn from the life of selfless service and love lived by Jesus Christ. He said this was exemplified by the sacrifice made by Christ when he was crucified.
Governor Amosun also seized the occasion to advice Christians in particular and by extension all Nigerians to always seek to provide selfless service to humanity just as Christ demonstrated through his death and resurrection.

The Ogun State Governor added that “when we show love and offer selfless service just as Christ did, then our nation and indeed the world we live in will be a better place for all of us.”

    Julius Rone’s concept of Easter

You can always count on Julius Rone to redefine every occasion and add an intriguing twist to every plot. Once again, he has chosen to be different. While many will observe the Easter season by eating and reveling in celebration, he has decided to once again embrace philanthropic gestures.

Sources close to the dark and handsome dude said for two days as Easter beckoned, he donated expensive gifts and cash to the less privileged without blowing his trumpet. Giving has become second nature for the connected dude who always feels happy to put smiles on people’s faces.

He is in every sense a successful businessman. Not only has he etched his footprints in the sands of time as a major player in the nation’s economic sphere, he is the founder of UTM Group, which has many subsidiaries, including UTM Dredging Limited, a provider of logistic support in engineering, construction, equipment rental, leasing, procurement, supply and general labour services to oil and gas companies.

  • Easter: Passengers stranded at Abuja airport

Easter: Passengers stranded at Abuja airport

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, was a beehive of activities on Thursday as passengers tried to travel for the Easter celebrations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government had declared Friday and Monday public holidays for Easter celebrations.

NAN reports that there was heavy traffic in the departure hall and the booking points of the domestic wing of the airport.

NAN also observed that some passengers were stranded as there were no available flights for them to travel to their destinations.

An official of the airport, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said all flights for Thursday were fully booked and that there was no more available flight for the day.

The official said that the upsurge was as a result of the long holiday.

Mr Saroke Abdullahi, Deputy Station Manager, Azman Airlines, said there was an upsurge in passenger turnout and that all domestic flights for Thursday were fully booked by Wednesday.

Abdullahi said that flights to Lagos, Kano, Maiduguri and Port Harcourt were the most patronised.

He also said the traffic upsurge had forced many airlines to sell tickets at their last prices and emphasised that there was no fare hike.

According to him, every airline has lower and higher prices for tickets.

He said travelers who bought tickets early were likely to enjoy lower prices.

“During rush periods like this, airlines sell their tickets at their last prices which is usually higher than the normal period but that does not necessarily mean fare hike,” he said.

A traveller, Mr Saleh Magaji, told NAN that he was stranded because he could not get a flight to Kano.

Magaji said he did not expect the increase in passenger traffic considering the harsh economic situation in the country; otherwise he would have booked before Thursday.

He said he wanted to use the opportunity of the long holiday to travel to Kano to spend time with his family.

Another traveler, Mr Joe Maduka, said he had rescheduled his trip to Port Harcourt since he could not get any flight for Thursday.

Maduka called on all Christians to use the Easter celebration to pray for the economic turnaround of the country.

  • ITAN mounts Muson stage at Easter

ITAN mounts Muson stage at Easter

After a thrilling performance at the University of Lagos Auditorium at this year’s Lagos Theatre Festival, Ayo Jaiyesimi’s ÌTÀN (The Story) will return to Agip Hall, Muson Centre in Onikan, Lagos on Saturday and Sunday.

The production is led by Jaiyesimi as executive producer, theatre veteran and journalist Ben Tomoloju as artistic director and Lookman Sanusi as productions director.

ÌTÀN, which is another amazing 90-minute production from THESPIAN Family Theatre & Productions, features a talented 60-man cast and crew, which include Norbert Young; Wazobia FM’s ‘LOLO 1’- Omotunde David; Sam Uquah; Nissi George and Segun Dada, amongst others.

ÌTÀN is a rich blend of cultural and contemporary drama, music and dance. It captures the modern day relational tension that crops up between the different age -generations as Àsìkò (‘Time’ personified) intervenes by taking ‘old school’ – die-hard -village-elder, Pa Latinwo and his newly discovered city, roller-coaster grandson, Dee-Kay, on a journey into the past and future. They discover dark secrets shrouded by the veil of time and come to terms with the fact that they need each other to make the best of the present.

With ÌTÀN, (The Story), Jaiyesimi believes that many families and work teams are frustrated because of the lack of generational understanding. Beyond the visible youth culture – dress, music and dance that the older generation and corporate bodies exploit to their advantage, how tangible are the investments that are being made in youth issues? How well are young people engaged and being involved in crafting corporate and national strategy in a world that they would form majority of the population? On the other hand, how have young people tapped into the experience and structure that older ones have to offer? These are some of the contentious issues that the play subtly throws up. It calls on all of us to question and fashion a way to bridge this gap before it leads to further disintegration in our society.

Jaiyesimi disclosed that THESPIAN Family Theatre & Productions intends to undertake a foreign tour with the play and that there are moves to form alliance with other partners. She noted that her outfit has produced plays that are tremendously good and those that could be better. “In fact, some have been quite profitable,” she added.

The playwright, who has produced and staged plays, such as The Five Maids of Fadaka and Mad King of Ijudiya, is very passionate in trying to minimise the challenges that multi-generational relationships pose in families and the workplace, and the disharmony it causes in families or teams within corporate organisations or communities.

“Historically, the generations consist of the old-timers and the young hotshots. But today, one can identify five different generations of people influenced by major historical events, social trends, and cultural phenomena of its time.”

Tomoloju said the intellectual bend of the play remains one big attraction that sets the play apart. He said ITAN has the profundity and philosophy that many cannot ignore as it takes from the tradition and the past for projection into the future.

On why he accepted to direct the play, Tomoloju said: “This is my first time of directing a play with the Thespian Family or a new theatre outfit. It has to worth the while to accept directing a play. People invite me to direct most of the time. And ITAN is not just a play for today, but for tomorrow.”  One thing that must be allowed to flourish according to him, is the new enterprise in the theatre business because theatre is not getting enough boosts apart from media efforts.

  • Easter holiday: Osun again offers free train ride

Easter holiday: Osun again offers free train ride

The Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has announced this year’s free train ride for the Easter celebration as part of its continued commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people of the state.

This is contained in a statement by the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperative, Industry and Empowerment announced that on Wednesday, the free train ride would convey people coming for the Easter festival from Lagos to Osogbo on Friday 25 by 10am.

A return train will depart Osogbo to Lagos on Monday, March 28 by 11:00am.

The statement noted that the government did this to ease movements of the people during period of the festivity.

The Government therefore enjoined indigenes of the state to maximise the advantage the free train ride offers them to visit home and enjoy the celebration.

The statement said: “This tradition of free train ride as introduced by the Aregbesola government about five years ago is aimed at facilitating the easy movement of the citizenry wherever they are.

“And this programme takes care of both Islamic and Christian festivities. Since its commencement, we can say confidently that it has been a boost to the economy of the state.

“It is this ease during festival periods that informed the introduction of the scheme by Governor Aregbesola.

“Therefore, it is the wish of government that our people from Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States would seize this window of opportunity by Aregbesola’s government to visit home and celebrate with their relatives.”

  • So much to behold at AY Live Easter show

So much to behold at AY Live Easter show

BY 7:00pm Easter Sunday, the roads leading to Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, were clogged with vehicles in traffic jams. The surge of crowd were headed nowhere but to watch AY Live at the Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel.

The show, hosted by popular on-air-personality, Freeze, started at about 9:00pm, over two hours behind schedule. And with about 6, 000 attendees, all seats were fully occupied, and some attendees had to stand throughout the show. Sponsored by Maltina, a brand of Nigerian Breweries Limited, the event’s theme, ‘Complete Happiness’ which is in line with Maltina’s tag line of ‘Happiness’, featured a long line of artistes, including dancers, musicians and comedians to do just one thing  create fun.

Immediately after a serenading session by the Veentage Band, the show kicked off with a mock performance of the result announcement for the recently-concluded presidential election. Actors mimicked the sign language interpreter and electoral officers of Kano and Rivers States (the two states with the most surprising result margins for the big political parties  APC and PDP) while AY played the role of the electoral umpire. In a seemingly brief dialogue, AY receives a telephone call and blurts, “I cannot rig it” which generated peals of laughter from the crowd. The ensemble was made complete with an actor playing Elder Godswill Orubebe’s role in the election process.

Then came the entrée  AY and Helen, clad in soutane, depicting a religious prophet and prophetess. Closely following this was Explicit, an Ibadan-based dance group also put up an energetic performance, including a well-coordinated acrobatic sync.

However, given that AY-Live thrives on comedies, the show featured the likes of Helen Paul, Princess, Acapella, Laff Up, Ushbebe, Gordons, Ajebo (comedian and OAP), MC Shakara and MC Galaxy. Few areas were sacred as they made fun of everything – politicians, religious leaders, foreigners, attendees, and even themselves.

Other artistes present were Bovi, Okey Bakassi, Empress Njamah, Vector da Viper, Timaya, Funke Akindele, Jimmy Jatt, Korede Bello, Kiss Daniel, Brian Okpara, Osas Ighodaro, Ubi Franklin and Lilian Esoro.

President Goodluck Jonathan also got a standing ovation at a point in the show when AY said that the recent act by Jonathan in conceding defeat in the presidential election to his major rival, General Muhamadu Buhari, is responsible for the current peace the country is witnessing.

“The man look am come say, ‘If I allow my people go the other way, Nigeria go scatter,” AY said in pidgin English. “He say make I just do like Jesus Christ. And today na the resurrection day.”

Among musicians that also performed at the show was Onyeka Onwenu. The Elegant Stallion put an amazing outing, belting out tunes from her collection such as Iyogogo, which got sections of the attendees dancing. She was also sprayed with currency notes in appreciation by her admirers. It did not matter to her fans that spraying of naira notes is frowned against by the Nigerian Constitution. AY also prostrated as a sign of appreciation to the beautiful singer.

As the curtains wind down at about 2:00am and the crowd thronged out of the Convention Centre, there was little doubt that AY-Live, despite not ensuring ‘complete happiness’ it touted, had succeeded in bringing a dose of happiness.

  • Easter fun at Lekki Beach

    Easter fun at Lekki Beach

THE reclaimed Bar Beach that has been transformed into the emerging Eko Atlantic City, Lagos used to be the most popular leisure hangout for  Lagos fun seekers during the festive and holiday periods.

However, in the absence of Bar Beach, in Victoria Island, Lagosians, indefatigable while in search of fun, have decided to move further. They still throng beaches or what is left of them on the island to catch fun.

Last week’s Easter holiday was not exception. After many  years that one last visited the Lekki Beach,  the beach’s Easter fiesta offered an opportunity to revisit and  see how  it was faring.

The number of people at the beach was lower than what it used to be in the past when the beach was in its full glory. The crowd is gone. But some die-hard beach lovers still made their way to the beach.

Nigerian music boomed from the loud speaker in the lounge. There was a children dance competition. The way the children were digging it out was as if there was a million dollar prize money at stake.

While the children were on stage, the adults were also having good times all around. Some were having family picnics.

The first thing one noticed was the rows rock barriers laid from the beach to about 50 metres into the ocean. It served as a cushion to take the strength out of the buffeting ocean waves. Outside the environmental usefulness of the rock breakers, the rocks offer vantage point to view the ocean. It is just like the Durban beach where a concrete walkway that stretches deep into the Atlantic Ocean is built.

Many visitors to the Lekki Beach, rather than stay at the beach, prefer to walk on the rocks and watch the high ocean current push waves upon waves to the shore. Occasional the current was too strong, splashing water through the rocks and the walkway where people were standing. It was fun and no one seemed to mind the cool splash.

There is just one major lounge in the whole of the beach. It is a wooden fabrication with green murals on the wall. The lounge is a storey building with bar on the ground floor  at the top where people can sit and enjoy the beach ambience. Not having so many beach lounges  may be due to low patronage of the beach. There were  other places with simply small canopies and chairs where visitors could rent, sit and relax.

The strong ocean wave has eaten up a large chunk of the  beach front, forcing people to shift back into the land.  Despite the ravish of the ocean, people were still having fun. The most popular being deeping oneself in the ocean water, allowing the strong current to splash one with white foam of the ocean water.

Along West Africa’s coast, Lagos has one of the stretch of beach front. Benin beaches have little or no white sand. Most of the beach fronts in Cotonou are simply made up of red austere ground. You get succour in places like Wyda in Casa del Papa and Togo. In Ghana, it is a mixture of sand and bare ground beach.

Gambia boasts of lush beaches, hence it is dubbed the Smiling Coast. However, there is a stretch of white sandy beach not  as long as Lagos.  That is why it is rather disheartening  watching this gift of nature to Lagos being gradually washed away.

Some of the fun seekers expressed unhappiness over the state of the beach and called on the government to intervene and save the beach.

Demola Akande said he stays in the United State, and having returned during the Easter period, decided to hang out at Lekki Beach.

” Men, things have really changed here.  This place and Alpha Beach used to be my hang-outs when I was still in Nigeria. I have pleasant memories of the place.

” That is why on my return home, I decided to come here and have a good time. The vibe here is not as high as it used to be. The government should save these beaches”, Akande said.

Another visitor, Mrs. Victoria Ameh, was thankful to God there is still a place to stay.

She said: “Obviously the beach has deteriorated. I know that. But I wanted my children to have a beach experience during this Easter. You can see my youngest daughter participating in the dance competition on stage.

“She is having fun. We can’t do that at home. That is why I decided to bring them here. I want the government to salvage the beach before it becomes late. There are not so many places around that we can take our children to at a time like this.”

One of the owners of the canopies and chairs that people rent complained about low patronage.

He said: “People no dey come like before. Some them self, when they come, dem go sit for those rocks. If na before, this place for don full pass the way it is now.”

Despite, the shortcomings, the visitors who had to cough up N1000 each to enter the beach area still said they had a good time.

However, noticeably is the lack of life guards at the beach front area to control people from swimming too close to the ocean water.

In addition, despite the ocean current being high with huge tide crashing on the beach, there was no flag whatsoever to indicate danger or areas to be avoided. The absence of some of these in the past has led to avoidable drowning in the ocean.

The trip to the ocean, despite the negative environmental impact, is still fun.
